The One Where Wil Inspires

I am—as are most normal artists—a fan before I am a creator. Wil Wheaton has been someone I have admired since his role in Stand By Me, and of course through that show almost every geek loves, and on into his more recent work I adore on both regular TV and WEBisodic shows.

He’s also right around my age (he’s 40, I’m 38), he’s a gamer, and physically we’re not so disparate. He’s very relatable.

He’s also a good writer.

I haven’t struggled with people not wanting me for a role. I gave up my acting...

Day Breaks Released

As of some point this afternoon the first of the Dire Calls stories went live. Day Breaks is now available on Amazon sites worldwide.

I’m afraid the sales pages are still in a rather sorry state as of this posting, however. The cover image has yet to go live, for example. (Though you can rest assured that the book itself works just fine when you download.) The “look inside” feature takes about a week to activate, it’s not linked to my author central page, etc.

But, that said … it’s live.

This re...

Into the First Weekend of 2013

Quick update regarding how everything is going here at the start of 2013. Then back to stones, and grinding out words …

I’m on track for goals:

I’ve hit my new fiction (1000+) wordcount every day*. (Currently up to a bit over 3000.)
There’s good progress on the milestones I need to hit in order to get the first Dire Calls short out next week. (Today I’m going to need a push to actually hit one of them—it was placed too close to the beginning of the year—but it’s not something I anticipate having...

Happy New Year 2013

This is just a quick Happy New Year wish as we head into what should prove to be an insane year for us here in house Reuther.

So, to start with:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now then …

I’ve just put the finishing touches on what—I think, anyway—is probably the last bit of main site design for a while. That was the addition of the cover carousel in the aside. It took me a bit longer to straighten out the nav bullets than I’d hoped, but there you go, it works.

You may notice this new feature has an actual cover...

My own worst enemy

Every writer is different. So things that work for or against one writer may not even be considerations for another.

My biggest issue as a writer, hands down, is that I am my own worst enemy.

I’m hypercritical of the words I choose to put down on the page. I stare my characters down with unbearable scrutiny and ponder if they’re really acting the way they ought. I glare at my manuscripts and accuse them of being terrible, hackneyed pieces of drivel.

When I look at the works of artists I admire (...

A Look at 2013's Schedule

I’m basking in the afterglow of three days of ham (when I say afterglow I may mean ham farts) and reflecting on some great memories. Two kids for the first time at Christmas! I’ve done one-kid Christmases quite a few times … having two was even better, never mind that the baby isn’t really interested in things yet.

I’ve been searching for a good set of writing goals for 2013—after a less-than-perfect 2012—and after some consideration, I’ve made a decision on that front. It’s probably worth men...

Status Update - Mid December 2012

As promised, I’m posting a quick status update. (I do micro updates on twitter and facebook regularly of course.)

I’m about 6000 words into the rewrite. The feel, pacing, etc. of the novel are starting to come together. I’ve got four chapters (part of the pacing is a focus on brief chapters) written and have done a first pass edit on each of them.

So they’re in decent shape, not too rough. I’ll need at least one more full pass on the entire novel once it’s finished, of course, but if everything...

Happy Thanksgiving 2012

I’m sitting here tinkering with what is essentially a proof-of-tech test while the hours tick away until we head off across the desert to visit my wife’s relatives in Indio for Thanksgiving. As such, I’m installing things like git and Ruby in order to run a Jekyll-based distro called Octopress. If that makes no sense to you, don’t worry. It’s tech-speak for the fact that I’m trying to get a speedy blog engine designed for geeks installed.

In writing news, tonight netted me over a thousand new...
