Author Spotlight: T.C. Southwell

Here’s a break from the usual guest posts I host in support of other authors: this is a spotlight feature. This inaugural spotlight is focused on a prolific SFF author, T.C. Southwell. She’s primarily a fantasy writer, but also has a couple of sci-fi series to her name. All told she’s written nearly twenty fantasy novels, a dozen SF volumes, and a contemporary romance.

That’s really a lot to take in, but fortunately for interested readers, the first novels in her series (each linked below) are...

Thoughts on the EverQuest Next Reveal

This post is mainly about Sony Online Entertainment’s newest game reveal (EverQuest Next) which took place this afternoon. But I’d like to lead off with a quick note on my writing, because to be honest if you’re here you are probably one of my readers anyway.

The first Dire Crimes novel will be out this year. I’m aiming for September. We’ll see how that goes. Currently I’m somewhere around a third of the way in. There’s 40kish words written (which all need to be looked at through the filter of...

Guest: James Wilber, Scofflaw (My Babylon Tour)

My tradition when I offer to host a stop on a blog tour is that I try to be as open as I can. Open in terms of the dates I offer. I generally only block out dates another author already has scheduled, or ones with supreme significance/unavailability. Open as far as subject matter goes.

I enjoy all the blog posts that the authors I offer space to come up with. But I have to admit that James Wilber’s post is perhaps just a tiny bit more enjoyable for the fact that he’s taken care to tie his work...

No Justice When A Child Dies

Some writers try very hard to separate their “writer self” from their “real self” and to some extent I can absolutely agree that it can be very beneficial to do so. For example, if you look at the recent explosion of bad press surrounding Orson Scott Card and the film version of Ender’s Game, you will find that it all leads back to his vehement opposition of equality for homosexuals. There’s talk of a major boycott of the film based on Card’s (oft, and loudly voiced) thoughts on the subject.

Guest: Marsha A. Moore on Mystical Staurolite

Sometimes we make mistakes. One such instance was when I failed to post Marsha A. Moore’s blog entry on the appropriate day. So, two weeks later, here it is. She’s here to tell us about the influence of gemstone lore in her Enchanted Bookstore Legends series and to talk up her new release Staurolite. If you’re looking for a little romance (and I know that some of you reading this blog are partial to it) mixed in with your fantasy, you should check the series out!

The new novel is available on...

Guest: Robin Lythgoe on the Attraction of Voice

First off: I’m still alive. Busy with a number of things, including writing what will end up being the next novel. (and trying to deal with toddler girl plus “wants-to-toddle-really-bad” boy. So, new work is coming. Eventually. I swear.

Fortunately there’s an author who has something slightly more lengthy to say. Robin Lythgoe’s As The Crow Flies is the fantasy adventure tale of the thief Crow who makes a slight miscalculation and winds up in over his head and forced to rely on an unwanted all...

Guest: L. Blankenship's Best Writing Tool: Discipline

Different writers have different ways of dealing with getting words on the page. Currently I am somewhere in the land of “please, please don’t let the kids/dog/universe distract me again” wishful thinking school. L. Blankenship has something to say about the process though, so I’ll cede the blog for the moment…

I’m a fan of the Butt In Chair method. I have a block of time set aside for my writing – it happens to be a 2-hour daily b...

Guest: Omon Hart on Near Death Experiences and Fantasy

Today’s guest spot is for Omon Hart, who has just released his fantasy The PureLights of Ohm Totem. He’s written a piece related to the novel that deals with the concept of Near Death Experiences.

A Near Death Experience and the Magic of Fantasy

by Omon Hart

Many years ago an extremely good friend of mine had a Near Death Experience. When I first met her, she explained to me that there was nothing “near” about it. She was as dead as a door nail until someone revived her back to life several minu...

Guest: Nicolette Andrews on Prophecy in Fantasy

My guest today is Nicolette Andrews, whose brand new romantic fantasy Diviner’s Prophecy has just come out. She’s going to be talking about the role of prophecy in fantasy writing.

by Nicolette Andrews

Today I am here to talk to you about prophecy and how it most commonly appears in fantasy. First of all, I would like to thank Mathew for letting me take over his blog to talk to you all and promote my new book: Diviner’s Prophecy.

Prophecy has to be one of the oldest epic fantasy clichés, along w...
