Sinterklaas 2013
Just a quick post to wish all of you a very happy holiday (there’s so many of them) today.
Namely Sinterklaas…
The Dutch winter holiday is one we celebrate here due to my naturalized citizen status (stemming from spending almost the whole of 2002-2009 in the Netherlands), and because it’s fun to put stuff in shoes. There’s a lot of questionable baggage which comes along with Sinterklaas (which we’ve agreed to keep out of our version of the celebration at the very least until the kids can compr...

Geekssential #10: Tomb Raider
Last week I talked about a video game franchise which moved me from the first game. This week finds me going into double digits with the feature, and going at it from a different end. I’ll be writing about a video game that I haven’t played the early incarnations of.
Tomb Raider…
A Long History
Where the Halo franchise I featured last week dates back to the first year of the new millennium, Tomb Raider is five years older. The first game came out in 1996, back when the Sony PlayStation was still...

NaNoWriMo 2013 is Over
It is December 1st. That means that once again, National Novel Writing Month 2013 has come to a close. It means I slept about 10 hours straight last night after being up for 23 or so. It means I’m finishing off some freelance work that’s been pending for a week. It means that a little bit later today, I’m going back to writing my novel.
For many people NaNo is a time of writing just to prove that they can get words down on the page. It is a chance to get a story out, in whatever form it takes....

Geekssential #9: Halo
Ok, so, I’m sick as a dog and have just sucked down nighttime cold meds. If this entry gets crazy, blame the drugs, man. But, it’s Wednesday, and I owe this week’s entry…so, we’re going to do this fast and loose. Hold on!
12 years ago this month, I stood outside a Fred Meyer store in Shoreline, WA in order to secure one of the few XBox consoles the store had been lucky enough to get in for release day. I managed to get a ticket to let me into the store before opening, and by the time mid-morni...

Seahawks Bye Week Takeaways
This is a quick reposting of a comment I made regarding the Seahawks on ESPN because hey, why not?
On a quick writing note: for the record (for those of you not following on Facebook) I’m working on chapter 8 of Avenging Angel at this point, and have more than 33,000 words written on the novel. I’m on track for an early (maybe even January 13th, the 1 year anniversary of Day Breaks) 2014 release.
Now, as for the Seahawks. Terry Blount routinely writes a fair bit of doom and gloom stuff about th...

Geekssential #8: Doctor Who
There are many things in geekdom. So many, in fact, that you simply cannot possibly be there at the beginning of all of them. Nor is it feasible to leap from one thing to the next with any hope of ever consuming even a sizable portion of what’s out there floating around, ready to be devoured by hungry minds.
So I’ll be honest and tell you that I came to this week’s subject very late indeed. But I will at least redeem myself by stating for the record that it was while on a much-needed London (o...

Geekssential #7: Joss Whedon
I’ve already touched on a piece of geekdom related to this week’s subject (in the inaugural post, no less) but I ran across a piece of video today which is both new, and which—I feel, at least—perfectly captures why this person (yes, we do write-ups on people here too…surprise!) is essential.
Without much further ado, (about nothing) let’s talk Joss Whedon.
Just, You Know: a Writer
Joss Whedon is, at his core, a writer. A storyteller. He’s made bigger waves in recent years due to his heading of...

Guest: L. Blankenship on Recursive Plotting
As you may have noticed from my status updates on Facebook or Twitter, the yearly personal trials of the July to September time frame still have me in their grips. So, nothing new from me…yet.
But what I do have for you today is a Disciple, Part III blog tour stop for L. Blankenship (you may recall her post from earlier this year) where she writes a guest entry on recursive plotting. She shares her perspective a year after first writing about the topic in advance of Disciple, Part I’s release....

Cover Reveal: Perfection Challenged By Jade Kerrion
Today’s entry is a guest post by Jade Kerrion, whose Double Helix series is coming to a close with the release of Perfection Challenged later this month.
Before we get into that, I wanted to drop a quick note on the Dire front: The Partners new (upgraded) e-book version is out on Amazon. Yay! It’s not available for update for those of you who already own it, but I will be asking Amazon to make that update available in the future. Now, in writing news…not much going on. Apparently the whole yea...

Guest: Anthony DeRouen on Unraveling the Conspiracy
Today’s guest post from Anthony DeRouen covers the subject of conspiracies, and in particular how they relate to his novel Precipice.
I’ll let you get to reading that while I get back to work on OCHRE GIANT. (Yes, I am presently using code names for novels. Saves me having to name them.)
Unraveling the Conspiracy
by Anthony DeRouen
Conspiracies can be traced back as far as Roman Empire and the assassination of Julius Cesar, and further into ancient Egypt with its romanticized settings and hot spr...
