Geekssential #13: Andromeda

Last week was an off week for Geekssential mainly because Christmas fell directly on Wednesday. (I sometimes usually write these in advance, but I decided to leave the holiday open.) So here’s lucky entry 13, the first Geekssential of the new year, and I’m going Gene Roddenberry!

No, not Star Trek.

Happy New Year 2014

It is officially 2014 here on the best coast. There’s not much to say other than Happy New Year!

After a few years of writing towards it, 2013 was year one of my real publishing career. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings.

Now, for the fun, here’s a picture of some fireworks I found (you guessed it) on the internet.

Looking Ahead To 2014

I mentioned on Friday that there was a post coming which would cover my plans for 2014. After having missed the crap out of my goals last year, it’s reasonable to expect that I’d dial things back down for the new year. Well…The Oatmeal said it best, really:

NOPE.

What I’m Gonna Do Instead

It’s simple, really. I’m going to…

Finish What I Started

Now, I don’t mean every single story that I’ve ever fiddled with in my entire life is going to get done in 2014, but that list from Friday? (To recap, that...

2013 Writing Retrospective: Year One

This is my inaugural annual writing wrap-up post. I’ll be looking towards next year on Monday, and that I have done once before, but since this is the end of my first year of my work being available “for real” I’m going to look at how the writing and publishing actually went over the past 12 months.

Midnight Sorrows - Glass Illustration

Raise a glass to 2013, folks…it’s all but over.

About Those Goals…

Missed by a mile. The goal was 25 works in one year. (I actually had a plan for more than that because of the bundled editions.) I r...

Merry Christmas 2013

There’s not much to say today except for Merry Christmas!

(I’m a Humanist, sure, but I like a good excuse to celebrate family. What’s Christmas but a wonderful day you spend with those you love doing nice things? Don’t make me do the Saturnalia speech.)

Oh, and here’s a picture of a tree in a car, because I found it on the internet, and it’s neat.

2013 Gaming Roundup: My Game of the Year

I’ve already written articles on the best sequels and best original (gaming) IP this year. But in this post I’m going to run down a top 5 list of games that I enjoyed the most in 2013. Bear in mind that this means I played the games below in 2013, not that they were released in 2013. (This fact will also be relevant in years going forward as well. Unlike your run-of-the-mill gaming site, this is my place to chat about the stuff I play each calendar year. Even if it’s old.)

Without further ado,...

Geekssential #12: Archer

I’m a huge James Bond fan. I grew up watching Sean Connery and Roger Moore lend their unique styles to the character that is perhaps the greatest spy ever created. I’ve enjoyed film after film, and was thrilled when the reinvention of Bond as a brutal, realistic person rolled around with Daniel Craig’s debut.

But that doesn’t mean all my spies have to be serious. Case in point: Archer.

2013 Gaming Roundup: New Gaming IP

I wrote last week about the best sequels in 2013, so this week I’m going to cover the new properties which arrived on the scene this year. I’ve selected a number which I think were worthy of note, and I’ll be running them down below. Also, a quick note on what’s coming up: next Friday I’ll be giving you my game of the year (and four others), so if these gaming rundowns interest you, be watching for that one. (This site’s RSS feed is available here.)

Now, no more delays, here’s the first notewo...

Geekssential #11: Dragonriders of Pern

I’ve been influenced by a great many authors, but one of the earlier influences is definitely Anne McCaffrey. I became familiar with her work starting in the latter half of elementary school, and read her quite extensively. While I can’t say that the series covered in today’s Geekssential entry is the single most influential of hers in my life, I can safely say that it absolutely is the one which turned me on to her spectacular body of work.

I am, of course, talking about The Dragonriders of P...

2013 Gaming Roundup: Worthy Sequels

It’s pretty clear that I’m a big gamer. All kinds of games, really. I’ve worked in the AAA PC gaming industry as a support agent, in the indie arena as a script designer, community manager, and lead designer. I have even designed pen & paper systems. I love games almost as much as I love telling stories.

Hell, my wife even works as a manager at a boardgames company here in North County, so you can say that games literally pay the bills in our household.

I’ve been heavily into video games since...
