A Guy and A Girl on this week's Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday

Welcome to another weekend of Weekend Writing Warriors. My 8 sentence snippet this week is from my latest release NA contemporary romance – A Guy and A Girl. Scene Set – Changing POV – now Hunter is discussing a painful moment in his childhood.
Hunter couldn't get out of Wednesday's communication class fast enough. The problem wasn't the subject, or even the prof. It was Gayle. Today was the day she decided to make her move on him, flirting and fluttering her eyelashes to draw his attention. He steeled his focus on Professor Campbell or his notebook. Twice he caught Chelsea snickering and when he glanced at her notepad, she'd drawn a large heart with Gayle + Hunter written inside. He scribbled, Stop that!!! then bumped her elbow. She chuckled and wrote, Someone has a crush on you. Lol.He tapped his pen on his Stop Thatmessage and focused on the professor, until he could bolt out of class.

After an ugly past forced Hunter Connolly to escape to Europe, the talented hockey player is back in North America and determined to land a position with a professional team. But he can’t hide from his past forever, especially when his beautiful classmate, Chelsea, forces him to reexamine his life. Soon, hockey is not his first priority anymore.
Chelsea Henderson is a bright co-ed working towards her dream of being a professional dancer. She forms a unique friendship with one of her father’s newest recruits and would love nothing more than to take it to the next level. However, there’s just one small problem. He doesn’t know she’s his coach’s daughter.
Amid the deceptions, danger lurks closer than they could ever imagine. Will fate contrive to rip the young lovers apart? Or will Hunter and Chelsea have their shot at love?

What people are saying about – A Guy and A Girl
5 Stars - I loved this book...I think that it was an awesome story. It was interesting on how everything came about as well as some surprises on who was doing what. I liked how the couple had issues that would be real life issues as well. Very well written, can't wait to read more books by Victoria as well as maybe some more in relation to characters in the book.

5 Stars - What a great romance. Fast paced. Chock full of tension. Little bit of hockey Little bit of dance. Lots of love.

5 Stars - I'm not really sure where to start with this book. The story took so many twists and turns. The suspense in the first part of the book was good, and the twist, I didn't see coming. I expected the story to end when the conflict resolved itself, but I enjoyed that the author chose to continue the development of the relationship between Hunter and Chelsea. I think a lot of stories are written so that the happily ever after comes right after the conflict, but in this story, the reader is drawn through more than one conflict, it shows the growth of each character and a progression of a relationship that is more like real life. Think about it, in our real life relationships, most of us don't go through one crazy experience and then BAM...everything works out. I think that's what made the story so real to me. All the challenges faced by Hunter and Chelsea helped to build and strengthen the relationship. The time frame may have been a little short for the amount of things going on, but that didn't affect my opinion of the story. I was still able to become invested in the story and enjoy it.

Janice Cairns - A Writer's Journey

JANICE CAIRNS - A WRITER'S JOURNEY
For many years I sent work off to Publishers and Literary Agents, mainly in Edinburgh, certainly not much further than Scotland, though I did send to a few English Publishers.  I was always excited sending off work, getting the large brown envelope for it, posting it.  I got good at becoming patient.  I saw early that it needed quite a bit of patience and perseverance to continually send work out and also keep your spirits up whilst doing so:  all writers need to be getting on with further work whilst waiting for the reply on one manuscript.

Sometimes it would simply be a plain rejection, a 'no', I'd receive and not much more I'd get but sometimes it would be a 'no' cushioned with a sentence or two of encouragement and well wishing, sometimes even a suggestion made as to how I could improve the work.  Sometimes it would be a 'no' with some constructive advice.  I remember receiving a letter from an English Publisher with my returned manuscript.  There were a great many comments made by this particular publisher about what she considered to be the weaknesses of the manuscript.  Though it was a 'no' it was a joy to receive this kind of reply.  It is always nice for an aspiring writer to have the knowledge someone somewhere has actually taken rather a long time to make comments, type all those comments up and return it back to you.  It was a short time after I'd receive this particular reply that I began the whole new process of re-writing large chunks of my novel, especially the opening chapters.

While these various rejections were going on I endeavoured to improve my writing even more, I'd research the creative writing shelves in book shops frequently to see if there were any new books out on writing or books that would stimulate and inspire my writing.  I discovered books such as 'The Gotham Writer's Workshop'.  I read this over and over doing the exercises as I went along. I actually enjoyed doing the exercises in this book.  I have read many other books on the process of novel writing.

The period I was setting about to improve my writing was like an adventure all of its own.  I found this stage stimulating even although another rejection letter would often drop through the post box.  Around this time I also subscribed to a magazine called 'Myslexia'.  This is a great magazine geared particularly towards women who write.  I learned a lot from writing magazines such as this.  There are always encouraging words for aspiring writers in these kinds of magazines, often plenty tips from authors also.  One day I made the decision to enter one of these competitions, I thought the whole process of preparing the work ready for the competition would be worthwhile.  I also thought I'd have nothing to lose.  I was a great feeling getting the opening chapters to my novel beautifully typed up and sent off.  I really made an effort with this before sending off.  More weeks passed and I'd continue to read good books by good authors for I think if an aspiring writer does so there's more chance of becoming a good writer.

One Saturday morning when I returned from shopping I received word in the post I'd been shortlisted for The New Talent Award at the Festival of Romance at Bedford.  I jumped for joy, I could hardly believe it.  I was at this stage, after many years of writing, where I really began to believe in myself.  I started to believe that there would be some route to publication on the horizon, now that my writing had been highlighted.

It was entirely delighted to prepare to travel to Bedford for the awards evening.  Instead of going for one night I went for three.  It was exciting to be shopping not just for groceries but for a brand new outfit for my adventure south.  When awards night arrived, there was a wonderful atmosphere of anticipation and joy as lots of writers and their friends and family congregated in the most grand and beautiful room you can visualise.  I didn't win the award but next day while the Festival of Romance was still on I introduced myself to a publisher who was interested to read the opening chapter I had been shortlisted for.  She asked me to email her my whole novel.  I did with a sense of huge excitement brimming inside of me.  Then, in a matter of a few weeks I'd got my contract with this publisher.  It was all well worth waiting for because I have now the most wonderful publisher who has helped and nurtured and advised me from the moment I signed up.  You might say another journey began after I signed up with my publisher.  It was then that I began to branch out with social media, signing up for Facebook and twitter and creating my blog.  All these things are vital for a writer today because through these channels you can spread the message outwards to a wider audience about who you are and what you do.  Gradually a writer can make friends in what is like a writing community on line.  But also on line you befriend people who are not necessarily writers but readers.  And, it is my view, at the very end of the day it is the job of the writer to please the readers.

Excerpt:
Vladimir reacted instantly, catching her before she hit the wall. The impact drove them both to the ground. “I’m glad you’re on top,” said Vladimir with another groan. “I absorbed most of the hit.”
“That’s very kind of you.” Lucienne turned to Vladimir, their faces inches away. His warm breath and pheromone made her forget where she was. Rushing footsteps brought her to her senses.
“Vlad?”
“Yes, Lucia?” he whispered, his hands pressing against the small of her back.
“We’ve been discovered.”
“I know. But there’s no need for them to yell. That’s kind of rude.”
“They’re not yelling.”
“No, but they will.”

Blurb –
A widower, a divorcee, co-workers, lovers...a future together...marriage?

Consoling each other for years over each other’s misfortune, Karen and Daniel turn a friendship into a weekend of unbridled red-hot passion. The heat between them leads to thoughts of a future together. That is…

Until children, an ex-husband, an unexpected heart-attack, a conniving trophy-wife, guilt, and personal choices come between them. Will the heat of their passion let them break from the past and move into the future?

Hot read for mature adults - a second chance at love.

Excerpt:
“Daniel, if you’re in the bathroom come out this minute.”The entrance opened, and he stood in the doorway.Problem, he wore only a towel.Awe, shit...she didn’t need to see his bare chest covered in crisp dark hair, the sculptured muscles of his arms and shoulders, developed pecs, and thick thighs. Damn, how was she supposed to resist such temptation?Desire added with the anxiety she’d already experienced on her drive here, lit her anger. “Why the hell didn’t you answer your phone? I’ve been calling and texting you for the last two hours.”A confused frown passed over his handsome face. Instead of responding, he stepped to the bedside table. He lifted his cell phone and clicked a few buttons.Unable to contain her impatience, Karen stalked forward. He glanced up when she grew closer and showed her the phone. “I don’t understand it. I don’t show receiving any messages or calls. The signals must have gotten lost because of the storm.”She’d suspected as much. Still, she refused to let him off the hook because he could’ve contacted her before he left town. “You should’ve called me. But no...” Having endured his inability to communicate for months now, she stabbed her finger through the air at him. “You never call. You always expect me to phone you. Well, I’ve had it.”The distance closed between them and she stood inches from him. Her fingertip tapped his chest. Static electricity sparked between them and her fist unfolded. She stumbled backward.“Whoa.” Daniel caught her around the waist with one hand and held her close. His phone landed on the bed before he circled his other arm around her. His strong grip held her steady and didn’t allow her to step away. “You’re right. I guess I’m just use to...”“Don’t say it. I’ve heard it too many times. Sharon might have resented the interruptions but I’m not her. I’m never in any type of meeting that you could possibly disrupt.” Karen spread her hands over his chest and worked to maintain a smidgen of distance. Nevertheless with him so near, his warmth surrounding her in a seductive cocoon, she had to fight the urge to melt against him. “Yes, but if I called you whenever I wanted we’d never get off the phone.” The husky tone of his voice pulled her gaze upward.

Flashing my Wednesday Briefs - Again! #WedBriefs

IF YOU ARE HERE FOR BOOK HOOKS - PLEASE SCROLL DOWN
Welcome to this week's Wednesday Briefs.
This is a raw (unedited) m/f time travel romance. It's a 500 to 1,000 word excerpt inspired by are you watching that?, give me a good reason not to, plus the photos below. Chapters 1 through 5 are available on the free read tab at top of blog.

Sunrise 52

Sian rubbed her forehead, trying to ease out the pain, throbbing between her eyes. "You know, I only wanted the dream of the little house, with a white picket fence, a cozy blanket and a hot guy to snuggle with me under the blanket."She pointed the flashlight at the empty painting. "I didn't want time travel problems. A weird alien princess and pictures that effing disappear in the middle of a storm." As she turned, the beam of light passed over J'dol's face. He was staring at the floor, eyebrows knotted together."Are you watching that?" She scanned the light around the floor. "Something there got your attention?"He didn't respond. She stepped closer and placed her arms around his neck. "Sorry for the silly tantrum, but I have almost everything that I wanted. I have my house. I don't have a fence. I have loads of blankets. And now, I have the hot guy to snuggle under the blanket." She kissed the tip of his nose. "What do you have to say to that?""I could build you a fence."Sian snorted. "What? You could…you're crazy."He stepped closer. His chest pressed against her as he slid his hands around her waist. "I want to snuggle under that blanket with you. This is wrong. I should not want to be with you. But I do."A tingle slithered from Sian's nose to her toes. She tilted her face upward and paused. Would he understand he message? Would he respond? He sealed his lips against hers, pulling her tighter to his body. Every lean, hard muscle pressing into her soft curves. All strength in her knees disappeared. She stumbled back. Her shoulders hit the wall. J'dol edged closer, intensifying the pressure of his kiss. Heat. Desire. Lust. Flowed through her veins. They separated with a gasp. The intensity of J'dol's gaze made coherent speech or thought impossible. To Sian, she was caught in the sights of a hungry lion, determine to feast and she was the prey.He ran his fingers up her bare arm. Shivers tickled her spine. He bent and scooped her up into his arms then carried her up the stairs to her bedroom. He paused at the doorway. "Give me a good reason not to.""I can only think of a hundred reasons why you should."A grin crossed J'dol's mouth as he entered the room. He placed Sian on the bed then sat next to her. After a moment's pause of what appeared to be deep reflection, he opened his mouth to speak, but she placed a silencing finger on his lips. "I know this is right. I want this."She slipped her hands to the bottom of her tank top and pulled it over her head, tossing it to the floor. She tugged at J'dol's shirt. Her gaze riveted to the muscled flesh as it was revealed. She chucked his shirt onto the floor near hers. Shifting, to lay back on the bed, she stopped. "Hold on moment."She hopped off the bed, crossed the room and press the switch on the wall. The low rumble of a motor sounded. J'dol glanced around the room. Confusion mixed with tension etched on his face. Sian bit back a smile. He was her warrior. Her protector. Always on the alert for danger. She pointed to the ceiling. "Look up."A large section of the outer roof was sliding off to the side, revealing the night sky littered with sparkling stars.J'dol leaned back on the bed, eyes wide with amazement. Sian stretched out next to him. "One of my favourite places. And now I can share it with you."J'dol turned and propped himself up on an elbow. "To make love under the stars is a wondrous moment." He ran his fingertips down her chest, over the mound of her right breast and paused, resting his hand on her stomach.Sian's breath quickened and her eyes closed as he bent near, placing small kisses on her chest and upward along her throat, under her chin. She tensed, waiting for his lips to touch hers. For that moment when they could express their desires. Two heartbeats. Six. What was wrong? Her eyes fluttered open and a scream ripped from her throat. She pointed at the skylight. "A face!"

First off - Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadian Weekend Writing Warriors and Canadian visitors to my blog.

Now, welcome to another weekend of Weekend Writing Warriors. My 8 sentence snippet this week is from my latest release NA contemporary romance – A Guy and A Girl. Scene Set – Changing POV – now Hunter is discussing a painful moment in his childhood.

"Something happened back home. I got blamed for it. I had nothing to do with it. Sort of." Hunter ran his fingers through his hair and continued, "But I was kinda responsible that it happened."Chelsea closed her eyes and gave her head a quick shake. "Okay, clearly not understanding.""You should try living it from my side."

Lies, deceits and secrets - not a good way to begin a relationship.

If you are here for Wednesday Briefs - please scroll down.

Welcome to Victoria's Pages of Romance and Book Hooks. This week's 6 to 8 sentences are from my NA contemporary romance – A Guy and A Girl

Scene Set – Chelsea's reply to Hunter's concern about why kissing Roger had been the worst thing in school.
Excerpt – (p. 21)Chelsea shook her head. "It isn't so much what people say to you. It's what they say behind your back. What really pissed me off was nothing happened. He said," She made air-quotes with her fingers. "That we did it. He said it just to protect his manhood because he was way too scared to try anything other than a simple kiss on the lips."
