Weekend Writing Warriors and A Guy and A Girl #8sunday

Welcome to another weekend of Weekend Writing Warriors. My 8 sentence snippet this week is from my latest release NA contemporary romance – A Guy and A Girl. Scene Set – Chelsea chats with Hunter and his friends at a local pizza joint.  (yes, there's some editing :-) to get to 8 sentences.)

"I'm sitting here with three Vipers. Cool. My father would have a stroke if he knew this." She stretched her hand towards Zach and said, "Hi. I'm Chelsea."After shaking hands, Zach asked, "What's Hunter like in school?""He comes to class on time and brings an apple for the teacher. He doesn't run with scissors and shares his crayons."Hunter grinned and said, "Chelsea eats glue."

What people are saying about – A Guy and A Girl
5 Stars - I loved this book...I think that it was an awesome story. It was interesting on how everything came about as well as some surprises on who was doing what. I liked how the couple had issues that would be real life issues as well. Very well written, can't wait to read more books by Victoria as well as maybe some more in relation to characters in the book.

5 Stars - What a great romance. Fast paced. Chock full of tension. Little bit of hockey Little bit of dance. Lots of love.

5 Stars - I'm not really sure where to start with this book. The story took so many twists and turns. The suspense in the first part of the book was good, and the twist, I didn't see coming. I expected the story to end when the conflict resolved itself, but I enjoyed that the author chose to continue the development of the relationship between Hunter and Chelsea. I think a lot of stories are written so that the happily ever after comes right after the conflict, but in this story, the reader is drawn through more than one conflict, it shows the growth of each character and a progression of a relationship that is more like real life. Think about it, in our real life relationships, most of us don't go through one crazy experience and then BAM...everything works out. I think that's what made the story so real to me. All the challenges faced by Hunter and Chelsea helped to build and strengthen the relationship. The time frame may have been a little short for the amount of things going on, but that didn't affect my opinion of the story. I was still able to become invested in the story and enjoy it.

Chris Patchell's Debut Novel - Deadly Lies

DEADLY LIES BY CHRIS PATCHELL

Deadly Lies:Husband and wife stand on opposite sides of a divide created by lies and rooted in a dark and deadly past…As a teenager, Jill Shannon fell victim to her stepfather's cruel abuse. Now as an adult, Jill's made it - she has a successful career and a solid, if not static, marriage to Detective Alex Shannon. Together they live out what seems to be a perfect life in Seattle.

The vow she made as a teenager to never again be a victim lies dormant - until one day a reporter lures her to his hotel room under the pretense of an interview - and suddenly all of it comes rushing back. Jill seeks revenge on the reporter, triggering a series of events that leads Jill down a wormhole of retribution, forcing her to spin an ever-widening web of lies.

Meanwhile, Alex is pulled into a case of a series of murders that began as cyber relationships. There seems to be a familiar fingerprint on these crimes, but Alex refuses to believe the murderer could be someone close to him…
“Chris Patchell”s debut novel, Deadly Lies, is a taut, fast-paced thriller that grabs you from the start and doesn’t let go. Patchell is a master storyteller with a real talent for creating pulse-pounding suspense.”—Kevin O’Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of Unspeakable.

When Chris Patchell isn’t hiking in the Cascade Mountains or hanging out with family and friends, she is working at her hi-tech job or writing gritty suspense novels. Writing has been a lifelong passion for Chris. She fell in love with storytelling in the third grade when her half-page creative writing assignment turned into a five-page story on vampires. Even back then Chris had a gift for writing intricate plots that were so good her father refused to believe she didn’t steal them from comic books.Years later, Chris spent long afternoons managing her own independent record store and writing romance novels. After closing the record store and going to college, Chris launched a successful career in hi-tech. She married, had kids but amid all the madness, the itch to write never really went away. So she started writing again. Not romance this time – suspense filled with drama, and angst, speckled with a little bit of blood. Why suspense? Chris blames her obsession with the dark on two things: watching Stephen King movies as a kid and spending ridiculous amounts of time commuting in Seattle traffic. “My stories are based on scenarios I live every day, distorted through the fictional lens. And my stories come with the added bonus of not having to be restrained by socially acceptable behavior."To learn more about Chris and her debut novel, DEADLY LIES, visit  www.chrispatchell.com/

Victoria Adams is flashing her weekly Wednesday Briefs #Wedbriefs

Welcome to this week's Wednesday Briefs.
This is a raw (unedited) m/f time travel romance. It's a 500 to 1,000 word excerpt inspired by: I didn’t see this one coming, Oh, it gets better…, Next question, plus the photo below. Chapters 1 through 5 are available on the free read tab at top of blog.
Scene set since last week – We left Sian and J'dol standing on the dock. Sian is holding his sword. A stranger is at the end of the dock and when Sian challenges him as to why he is here; he looks at J'dol and says, "I've come to take him back."

Sunrise 54
Sian felt the air gush out of her like a professional boxer had punched her in the stomach. She didn't want to believe what her ears heard, but from the look on J'dol's face, he'd heard the same terrifying sentence. She raised the sword to the level of the man's face. "You can't have him."The man in the long shimmering robe shrugged. "That silly weapon won't stop me. Look at how your arms tremble, holding it. Struggling to keep it aimed at me. Give it to the warrior."Sian felt the heat of J'dol's body as he stepped behind her, swung his arms under hers and supported her grip on the sword. His breath tickled her ear as he spoke. "We do this together. We are one."The stranger rubbed his hand across his mouth. "Interesting. I didn’t see this one coming.”"This one? This one what?""This wrinkle. I didn't expect J'dol to treat you as an equal. You are nothing but a woman."J'dol's chuckle was like maple syrup on pancakes to Sian. "Sian is no mere woman. My sword may be too heavy for her, but give her one crafted for her and she would wield it like a true warrior."The stranger smiled. "Oh, it gets better…"Sian didn't want to ask, she just wanted the man to vanish so she could drop the heavy sword, turn in J'dol's arms and kiss him with all the love that was flowing through her at this moment. There was no bravado in J'dol's speech, just words spoken with an intense passion and deep respect. Her gaze fell on the word etched into the sword – HONOUR. It wasn't just a word to J'dol, it was his moral code. He had treated her with honour and acted honourably at all times. She would be damned if she was going to break that honour. She rolled her shoulders trying to ease the tension then released a sigh. "Ok, what gets better?""J'dol is in love with you."Sian felt J'dol flinch. She leaned back against him offering comfort to his embarrassment. "And I am in love with him."Her heart beat faster as J'dol pressed himself closer to her. She understood his unspoken words. He was happy and relieved she loved him.Relief flooded her. The truth was out. Neither had found the courage – or possibly – the perfect moment to confess their feelings, but the issue had been forced. She had no idea when she'd fallen in love with J'dol; or he with her. They'd barely known each for more than a few hectic and chaotic weeks. A vision of Kiry turning and winking as she left the last time flashed in Sian's mind. Kiry knew. Probably her aunt and Purple, too. Hmph. Isn't it always the way? The lovers are the last to know. The man stepped forward. A growl emanated from J'dol. He lifted the sword. The stranger raised his hands and stepped back. "Next question? I'm sure you have many."The ache in her shoulders reached the extreme pain level. Sian pried her fingers off the hilt and dropped her arms. J'dol held the sword and kept her wrapped in his protective arms."Ok." Sian rubbed her neck. "I do have one question. Why? Why does he have to go back?""To take his place on the throne."

Now onto the other flashers.

My shoes kept a steady rhythm with my burning lungs. I veered off my regular path, opting to hear the crunch of the leaves beneath my feet. The image of my mom’s disapproving face was ignored as I leapt across a gurgling brook. Breathe, breathe, crunch, crunch.            If I wasn’t mountain biking, I was running. I craved speed and freedom. I had to escape the oppressive perfection of living in the Campbell home. Thinking of my two older sisters, one model and the other a star volleyball player, my legs lunged, lengthening their stride. Not good at team sports and terrified by cameras, I knew my family felt my height was wasted on me.             Even Jeremy gives me a hard time. A stitch pinched my side. Breathe, breathe. I knew I was going too fast, not pacing myself right. Something was urging me on, pushing me to scale the hill before me, and plunge deeper into the woods. I refocused on my rhythm, my inhales and exhales, and my body realigned itself, goose bumps shooting across my arms. There it is. I’d hit my second wind and I surged on, not caring where my feet led. It’s freedom! Complete and—            There was a rush of air, a whistling in my ear, and a sting to the back of my arm. Instantly, I tumbled to the ground, sliding into the damp morning dew. Cold dirt filled my nostrils as blackness enveloped me. ------------------------------             I heard my own labored breathing long before I realized I was somewhere in between awake and asleep. Forcing my eyes open, I gasped. My senses took everything in at once—the smell of wood shavings, the scratchy ropes on my wrists and ankles, and the pressure of the mattress beneath my body. I screamed, but the empty room with wooden floors and stacked logs for walls was empty. No one burst through the door in the corner.Realizing it was useless and only making my throat raw, I fell silent. Panic flooded me. How did I get here? I pressed my thoughts to retrace my steps, but my mind felt sluggish. My last memory was running in the woods just before sunrise. I could still feel the burn from the autumn air hitting my lungs. Now the solitary window painted a yellow rectangle on the floor. The room felt stuffy. It’s probably late afternoon. But is it the same day?The minutes rolled slowly into hours, the silence suffocating. What had my therapist said to do when I was scared? Breathe deeply and don’t panic. It was too late for that; all the years of therapy after my childhood accident were rendered useless. I’m drowning all over again. Only this time, it wasn’t water filling my lungs but pure fear and terror pressing down on my chest. I gulped in dry air, my eyes burning with tears. No one’s coming to save me. A sob escaped me as the real horror of the situation washed over me. I’m tied up. Someone knows I’m here. What would happen when they came back? As the last rays of light were snuffed out by the shadows of the night, that someone came through the wooden door. photo AmandaStrong.png About the Author:Born in Dekalb, Illinois, Amanda Strong has called Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia and now New Mexico home.

Her reputation as Micah LaFever’s wife has left her penniless and without many viable options until Bo comes calling. Now, she believes she found the perfect man until her past rears its ugly head.

Can murder and corrupt dealings keep these two lovers from making it to the alter?

Excerpt: “God, when is he going to get here,” Sarah muttered and strolled to the freestanding, oval mirror in the corner.
Critically, she examined her silk dressing gown’s high collar. Unable to breathe with every button running down the front of garment secured, she’d only connected a few at her waist. The dark red robe highlighted her creamy complexion and light blonde hair.

Through the open at the top, she viewed the curve of her breasts and the tight fit of her corset. The cream color almost matched her skin, creating the illusion that she was nude underneath. Tugging aside her wide skirt, she examined the long line of her legs. She’d opted to omit her bloomers. One, because with the fire raging in the fireplace, she was hot. Two, because she thought Mr. Kildare should get a glimpse of what he’d receive if he decided to make her his wife.

Granted from what Madeline had told Sarah, the man wanted more than a dutiful wife. He sounded as if he were more like her deceased husband. Micah enjoyed playing extreme bedroom games.

She frowned, thinking how much she’d missed sex in the last year. Not because she hadn’t had the chance to indulge. More because she hadn’t wanted to fall victim to the same power hungry crowd that Micah had belonged. She’d done enough for those bastards and she had no intentions of doing...

Knuckles hammered against her door.

Brushing a nervous hand over her hair, she offered up a silent prayer that everything would work out before she rushed back to the doorway. After a quick breathe, she asked, “Who is it?”

“Bo Kildare, I was sent by Madeline Cowden.”

A masculine tone rang from the other side.

His voice alone sent shivers racing over her skin. She flipped back the lock and inched open the door. “Yes, she said you might be stopping by.”

The only way to find her is through Sara's dreams. But her gift has taken an unwanted vacation, and without it, Sara has no idea how to rescue Grace. In a foreign city, with no clues, and her dreaming talent failing her for the first time, Sara must figure out another way to find Grace before it's too late.

Excerpt
Three AM.  Why is it always three AM with these dreams?“Who was it?”  He doesn’t need to ask why I’m awake and muttering at three – sorry, 3:01 AM, now.  All he needs is the details.“Grace,” I say.  He stares at me, his eyes asking a question.  I hold his eyes, shrugging apologetically, and he’s got his answer.  A whole conversation in five seconds and one word – I guess that’s what happens after almost fourteen years of marriage.“You were going to tell me last night, weren’t you?”I was.  But when I walked into the bedroom and saw him lying there, just waiting for me – well, what was I supposed to do?I scoot up next to him, smile, and trace a finger the whole length of his scar.  It really isn’t that bad.  I did about as well as anyone could have when I operated on him, considering the circumstances.  If I’d had more time to prepare, or a full surgical team, or the right facilities, there might not be a visible scar at all.  But I didn’t – and if I hadn’t operated when I did, in the middle of that horrible storm a year and a half ago, I might not have a husband now.  He doesn’t mind the scar, and, anyway, it’s just something we have in common now.  I still have the old scar from my appendectomy, so we match.  His finger goes to it now, and I shudder a little at his touch.  Just like always.  “What can I say?  I just can’t resist you.”   “I get that,” he says, with a wicked grin.  “And you didn’t tell me beforehand because…?”He knows perfectly well why.  “You can’t keep a secret.  I mean, you can at work, I know that.  But not with me, or the kids.”  He starts to shake his head, but I glare at him, and he sighs heavily.  “I admit it,” he says finally.  It’s the same reason that, when we want to really surprise one of the kids on their birthday, I handle everything.  Brian and I agree on a dollar amount and a general idea, but I buy the actual gift myself, and he doesn’t see it until it’s unwrapped.
