Fact in Fiction!
I'm still on my accuracy kick and I've just posted an extensive discussion of REALITY in Fiction on my Candy's Monsters blog.
If you've missed it, please check it out!

Nothing breaks the magical spell of a storytelling more than a careless factual error. Yes, I'm ranting a bit, but... I think it's that important.

Accuracy?
How important is accuracy in fiction? I think it's very important. I try to get the "real" aspects of my stories correct because the real parts of a story, the non-ficiton aspects, help "sell" the fiction.
This is especially true when I'm weaving a tale that includes truly incredulous elements — supernatural beings, unlikely coincidences and anything in the science fiction, fantasy or magic genres.
What am I talking about? Usually, it's the setting. When I placed my vampire story, I set it in parts of New York City that I know very well. I've been told by readers that one of the best parts of Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet is the "tour of New York." I'm pleased by that, as the magical elements are integrated into real, solid, factual places.

When Books Disappoint....
I hate to write bad reviews — especially when it's an indie writer. Anyone else feel that way?
A scathing review of a bestselling book by a writer with a major publishing contract is one thing, but kicking the little guy makes me queasy. That being said, I've read a few disappointing indie ebooks lately. Should I post reviews or simply pass on the opportunity?
I'm torn.

Survived my First Author Reading
I survived!
I spoke slowly and clearly. I read from the opening pages of POED to a wacky audience of Poe fans & fanatics.
Wacky? Yes, it was a wild mix of ages and interests. I was on the program with a beat box duo interpreting "Dream within a Dream"; a veteran actor reciting "The Raven" with a raven puppet; a keyboard player with a new Poe-inspired song about bedbugs; a Russian immigrant artist displaying her painting of Poe's house in the Bronx & talking about the translations of Poe in Russian; and a college freshman in the drama program singing his original song based on "The Black Cat" in which the killer blames the cat.
I survived and I will be less nervous next time. So this was a success!

Getting Ready for Reading
I'm doing my very first author reading at the "In the Shadow of Poe" event at NYU on Friday!
Slowing down is my big hurdle right now. Apparently, I have to give the audience a chance to think — and most of all picture, what I'm describing. I'm a fast talking, highly caffeinated New Yorker so this is a challenge.
Wish me luck!

POED on The BOOKCAST
The Super Storm Sandy blew away my Free the Monsters promotion. With blackouts, flooding, wind swept shores, my ebook giveaway was a minor casualty of the devastating weather — nothing when compared to the huge losses suffered by many people up and down the East Coast of the U.S.
POED, the third in my Candy's Monsters ebook series, went live on Amazon a few minutes before the Con Edison transformer a few blocks from my home blew — plunging a big part of NYC into darkness for days.
A few people did manage to find their way to POED. It's a contemporary gothic, inspired by Poe's scariest stories and I think folks will enjoy it.
You can hear me talk about POED and Poe on The Bookcast, using this link:

Think of it as a late Halloween treat!

Free the Monsters!
Tricks and Treats for E-Readers!
The third Candy's Monster, entitled POED, will be available on Amazon in time for Halloween.
In addition, all three of my Candy's Monsters will be FREE for three days — October 30, October 31 and November 1.
Grab those Monsters and load up your Kindles. If you don't have a Kindle, don't despair. The Free Kindle Reader App makes the Monsters available on smart phones, laptops, tablets, etc. Since the Monsters are fast reading novellas, many people read them on phones while commuting.
Boo!

Good New on Goodreads First
I've decided to post my good news here on Goodreads!
My original plan was to e-publish my third Candy's Monster in December, but I'm moving up the schedule and bring POED to light for Halloween.
Yes, the third MONSTER is a contemporary take on the gothic world of Edgar Allan Poe.
More on POED very soon!

Posting Reviews Today!
Slowly but surely, I'm getting around to reviewing the books I've read recently.
I know that reviews are very important to writers and I hope that after you've read one of my Candy's Monsters you will post a review here on Goodreads and/or on Amazon.
I'm reluctant to post reviews of books I don't like — especially when they are the work of fellow indie writers — but all reviews are important.
So, today I'm posting reviews and hope you will too!
