I'm afraid I've be negligent and forgot to post the links here for my last few Candy's Monsters blog post.

The Monster Menu

Today's Special on the Monster Menu — The Sphinx

Mythological monsters that cross various cultures are fascinating beasts. The Sphinx is always an artistic choice, but what about a Sphinx as a character?

What do you think?

A Writer's Dilemma

Attention Writers: Have you ever met one of your characters?

I have!

I patterned a villainous character after a woman at my health club and the real person turned out to be entirely unlike the character I created.

Or is she?

Madness!

Madness in Fiction...

Today's Monster Meditation on my Candy's Monsters blog, takes on Madness in Fiction.

From Jane Eyre's romantic rival hidden in the attic and the mad with rage narrator of Poe's "Cask of Amontillado" to the huge population of damaged people/serial killers in popular fiction, MADNESS is everywhere.

But what does it have in common with actual mental illness? it's a complicated question with answers that change

Midnight Monsters

It's always midnight — somewhere...

Midnight is a great time to place the impossible, magical or improbable in fiction. Just the word midnight is filled with romance and a touch of menace, too.

My current MONSTER MEDITATION is on Midnight:

Dial M for Technology

Mobile phones, WiFi, email, GPS...

Today's technology put a crimp in old fashioned stories. The flat tire on a lonely road is no longer the beginning of a scary tale.

I'm blogging about Dial M for Murder and new challenges for storytelling on my Candy's Monsters blog.

Check it out and chime in!

Beta Readers...

There comes a time in every novel's life when it must face readers. For a tender, young first draft this can be a traumatic experience.

Of course it's much worse for the writer!

Waiting on reports from Beta Readers can be torture, but it's an important step.

Check out my post on Candy's Monsters and chime in about YOUR experience with first draft readers.

First Summer Guest Blogger

Living in one of New York City's notoriously small apartments means it's hard to host house guests. But my Candy's Monsters blog has a comfortable pull-out sofa for guest bloggers. This summer, I plan to host a few of my new writer friends with virtual visits.

First up is A.C. Flory, the science fiction author. Her guest post is generating a living discussion about the importance of story, the value we put (or don't put) on literature as compared with genre fiction, and more.

Join the conversation on Candy's Monsters blog!

Genre Fiction

Do you read only one genre of fiction?

I don't. I read a wide range of genres — cosy mystery, detective fiction, thriller, suspense, science fiction, romance, historical romance, paranormal, urban fantasy, horror...

I also write in several genres.

Books are marketed with narrower and narrower definitions and smaller slices of the genre fiction pie.

Is this good?

What do you think?

Check out my Candy's Monsters blog post on the subject and chime in with your opinion!
