What Kind of Story is This?
I'm always writing between genres, but this time I've stumped myself.
I can't figure out the category of my new story, entitled SPLINTER. Is it science fiction? Is it fantasy? Is it some kind of supernatural hybrid?
I've posted SPLINTER on my freelance writing blog, SweetCopy and I hope that readers will help me figure out where it belongs so I'll have a chance to place it in some kind of collection in the future.
Check it out and tell me what you think.

Big News Preview!
Tomorrow, I'm making a big announcement on my Candy's Monsters blog. I've decided to preview the news HERE on Goodreads!
I've written a short, mystery novella that I will serialize on my Candy's Monsters blog. I'm going to post about the project tomorrow and begin the serialization the following Friday.
The novella is called "Waltzing in the Snow." It was written in four very intense days and the story is told in 17 short chapters. Each chapter has some clue, or clues, to the solution of the mystery. As this is a first draft, I hope to get some feedback from the blog readers.
This is especially important with the 17th chapter. I should say chapter(S) as I've written two endings. Yes, I'm on the fence. I'm not sure which last chapter is best.
I'm going to ask the blog readers to tell me which one they like best. After 17 consecutive Fridays, I hope they will enjoy the ride and offer me some insightful comments.

A Happy Surprise!
I'm not a science fiction writer. I dabble in science fiction, as it is sometimes the genre adjacent to what I'm writing. And over the years, I've read and enjoyed many science fiction novels and short stories. I would even go as far as to say that Ursula Le Guin is among my all-time favorite writers.
When Erin Lale, of Times Yarns, posted about her new collection "Cat's Cradle" with stories involving time travel and cats, I was intrigued by the challenge of writing outside my usual arena. I'd read and enjoyed "The Anarchy Zone" collection from Times Yarns, so I knew that I could interpret Erin's criteria in my own way.
I immediately trashed the talking cat, feline from another planet and hybrid cat/human futuristic gambits. I'm not saying that these could not form the basis for a good Science Fiction and/or Fantasy story. I'm just saying, that none were the right approach for me. After some thought, I wrote "Locard's Tale" a combination forensic detective and cat story and it's in the collection.
So yesterday, when Erin sent the link to Perihelion (an online science fiction magazine) I was very pleasantly surprised to find that my story was singled out as a good Science Fiction Cat story!
Surprise! I write science fiction....

Cat's Cradle
"Cat's Cradle" is the newest short fiction collection from Times Yarns and it's FREE until January 6!
My story is called "Locard's Tale." It's one part supernatural cat and two parts crime procedural with a dash of family saga.
The collection, edited by Erin Lale of Time Yarns, is a mix of genres and voices, but it's full of cats from start to finish.
Download it from Amazon:

Story in New Collection!
I'm happy to announce that I have a story in a new collection debuting in January 2013. "Cat's Cradle" is part of the "Time Yarns" series of of short fiction anthologies. After I read "The Anarchy Zone" — another "Time Yarns" book, I decided to write a story that met the "Cat's Cradle" specs — a cat and some element of time travel.
My story is entitled "Locard's Tale." The protagonist is a forensic scientist with a specialty in analyzing animal hair evidence. His cat, Locard, is named after the father of modern forensics. Locard's principle was that it is impossible to do something without leaving a piece of yourself behind. It might be a fingerprint or a seed from a plant in your home. If you happen to be a long-haired cat, you're very likely to leave some cat hairs behind.
Look for the collection, edited by Erin Lale, early in 2013.

Ebooks Make Great Gifts!
Help spread the word — from classics to new indies, ebooks make great holiday gifts!
Ebooks aren't fattening so there's no post-holiday regrets.
Ebooks fit any size Kindle (or Kindle reader App on another device).
Ebooks don't cause any clutter — unlike the cute, little things that need to be dusted.
Ebooks always arrive on time without shipping costs so...
Give ebooks!
I've just sent both my parents ebooks they will love. I've also sent friends who love science fiction, mystery, history and romance ebooks that will extend the holidays long after the wrapping paper has been recycled.
My own Candy's Monsters are waiting to be "gifted" and so are thousands of other titles that will be just the right choice for someone on your list!
