Selfless Service

Gen 47:11 And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. Gen 47:12 And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to their families.

Joseph began to play the role for which he was preserved. He gave possessions to His family. We do not read much about Joseph accumulating possessions for himself. Instead, we see a selfless person more careful to see the brothers that ill-treated him in the past well taken care of. Joseph is without any bitterness as he becomes a great blessing to his family. Only the best was given to them.

I researched to see what Joseph had for himself, but found no references on personal accumulations. He must have taken what was given him, but in all humility, he does not ask Pharaoh for any personal favors for himself. Someone once said that selfishness is at the root of all sin, while love covers all misdeeds. The actions of Joseph overflowed with love and forgiveness. Joseph is an example that shows we can truly forgive completely and live as blessings to those who have deeply hurt us in the past. The text also shows that God has been known to arrange for nourishments and provision in the least likely places.

Joseph was not selfish or bitter. He had gone through several painful experiences, but he had diverted energy that could have been wasted on bitter thoughts to service. There is the greater joy of serving and blessing those who had treated you badly. Discover that joy. But this was exactly what Jesus also did. It was painful and not easy to die for those who were spitting and deriding Him. May we follow the footsteps of Jesus.

Song.

Sweetly, Lord, have we heard Thee calling,

Come, follow Me!

And we see where Thy footprints falling

Lead us to Thee.

Footprints of Jesus, that make the pathway glow;

We will follow the steps of Jesus where’er they go.

Tho’ they lead o’er the cold, dark mountains,

Seeking His sheep;

Or along by Siloam’s fountains,

Helping the weak:

If they lead thro’ the temple holy,

Preaching the Word;

Or in homes of the poor and lowly,

Serving the Lord:

Then at last, when on high He sees us,

Our journey done,

We will rest where the steps of Jesus

End at His throne.

Prayer: Lord, lead us to follow your foot prints. Amen

Days of Pilgrimage

Gen 47:9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. Gen 47:10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

Our days on earth are few and evil. How true. If only we can understand this great truth, we will place far less emphasis on them and consider more our eternal future. We will see ourselves as pilgrims and not settlers. We will recognize our true home … our Heavenly home. 130 years is not a short period from an earthly perspective, but when we consider the eternal future ahead of us …all our times on earth become truly insignificant. Yet our sojourn is not to be wasted, for it determines how our eternity will be. We will be termed as slothful if our work is not done and we are yet to be able to receive God’s well done.

Indeed it is a blessing to be able to know that there is still a lot yet to be done from God’s assessment. Many overestimate their accomplishments and a few are deluded that they have done much good. Jacob says evil and few have the days of my life been, as he proceeds to be a blessing to Pharaoh. May we ever lean on the mercies of God to receive help to complete our work be it amongst the heathen or in the body of Christ. Many Christians may not see clearly that God has given them assignments not just in the Church, but in the secular arena as well.

Also remember that this is a pilgrimage, that there will one day be a journey home, a reporting back to the father … a presentation of accomplishments. How will it be for you on that great appointed day? Will you be empty handed? When God asks … did you bless X and Y …how will you answer?

Reflect on your life as a pilgrim and the people and situations you have been sent to bless – and whether you did so. Sadly we focus too much on ourselves and how it was for us and the personal progress we want to make … but I discern God created us and sent us ….more for others …to be blessing to them while we may endure our own process of being perfected for our roles in touching the lives of others. I remember so many hymn writers … many who lived many painful lives but all are blessed by the evergreen poetry they left behind. Take your focus off yourself … seek grace to be salt and light for others.

Song.

I know there is another fellowship in Heaven 4ce.

Prayer: Lord, help my selfishness … help me to be an instrument of blessing to others. Amen

A Blessing to others

Gen 47:7 And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh

May I always be a source of blessing to others and not pain. May even my enemies recognize that I am a fountain of blessing over-pouring with goodness that impacts the environment not just for myself but for all that associate with me. Jacob was a blessing to Pharaoh. How can I be a blessing even to my enemies? Meditate on this. I believe Christians praying in a community become such a huge blessing in that neighborhood. Will your absence be felt if you relocate or are you perceived as a nuisance.

Another example of this was David who once was found in the camp of Achish – the Philistine King … even in that scenario, David was a blessing and the King was sorry to see him go.

1Sa 29:6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not

Do you know as Christians you carry so much favor that your presence alone can magnetize goodness and healing into situations. An evangelist on holiday once visited a shop and as he browsed the books on the stand, he met a man who had been ill for a while who did not know him as an evangelist but just exchanged greetings and shook his hand. But as he shook his hand, the sick man became well instantly. Have you ever been in situations where non-Christians have felt the positive impact of your presence? If not, then do examine your life again. This is what it means to be salt and light. To be a blessing and an illumination to darkness … to restore savor to lack of taste and to be an answer to begging questions.

Worse is if you have become part of the problem, always murmuring and criticizing …making things worse. Jacob blessed the heathen King. Lord, make me a blessing even to those that hate me.

Song.

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

there is no shadow of turning with thee;

thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;

as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

all I have needed thy hand hath provided;

great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain

Prayer: Lord, make me a blessing to all that come in contact with me. Amen

Connected to Christ (Part II)

Gen 47:5 And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee: 6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

Another reason why connections matter is because the one with whom we are connected knows us well. Joseph was told to find men of activity known to him to be made rulers. There are brothers and there are brothers of activity. There are activities known to other men and there are activities known to Christ.

The lazy have no portion in ruling or in enjoying the prosperity of God. The one Christ knows as indolent will be provided for, but will not be entrusted to rule over resources and people. Can it be said that Christ knows you as a man of diligence? Or will it be said that you are a man of words, a man of dreams, a man of proposals, a man of criticisms … indeed there are many men … but a man known to Christ as a man of action is rare. These will rule.

It is also true that many will say they did so many miracles and exploits in His name, but Jesus will say I never knew you – depart from me, you workers of evil. Being known to Christ as a man of activity is not always referring of exploits seen by men …but more so works that will count at the end. So much singing, doing, serving and teaching is not seen by God – because hearts are not pure before God. God cannot reward these activities.

Ultimately, the raptured saints will rule with Christ in the period called the millennium. In eternity we will be elevated in a honor and glory that cannot be described. Our destiny is to reign and rule with Christ. Reflect on this devotional …and your connections to Christ. Reflect on this … how can Christ expand your coast and put more in your hands – even for the heathen, if He does not know your activity or worse He perceives your work to be from an evil heart.

Song.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,

Yet will I fear no ill;

For Thou art with me; and Thy rod

And staff my comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnishèd

In presence of my foes;

My head Thou dost with oil anoint,

And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life

Shall surely follow me;

And in God’s house forevermore

My dwelling place shall be.

Prayer: Lord, let me forever be connected to you. Do not permit to do whatever will lead to a disconnection. Amen

Connected to Christ (Part I)

Gen 47:5 And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee: 6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

Our connections matter. Who have you been connected to? Notice that the best of the land is given to Joseph and set before him and not to his brothers. But the brothers have come to Joseph. It is the connection to Joseph that makes it possible for the best of the land to be offered. This is not a minor detail. Our connections to Christ as we surrender to Him bring us into favor. Similarly, our disconnection will cost dearly in terms of access to our help. Our dependence on God and reliance on him fully is our point of access to the resources we need.

Imagine, the brothers beginning to initiate their own plans outside dependence on Joseph. What a wasted unnecessary effort that would have been. In Christ, all resources have been laid down – for our sustenance and to finance our assignments. But we have severed the connections because of sin and self. To get back on track … find a way to be with Christ afresh … to rededicate your life afresh …to love Him afresh. Learn to love Him more. If sin has caused a disconnection, then repent, never to go back. Soon you will discover that the land of Egypt is before Him and not before you. Also, He is encouraged to make those connected to Him, dwell in peace in Goshen. Christ knows the location of safety – it is the place of dwelling in Him … He makes us dwell in green pastures, leads us beside the still waters …He restores our soul. What a delight to be connected to Him? What a privilege to be joint-heirs with Him to whom all has been bequeathed?

Song.

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want.

He makes me down to lie

In pastures green; He leadeth me

The quiet waters by.

My soul He doth restore again;

And me to walk doth make

Within the paths of righteousness,

Even for His own Name’s sake.

Prayer: Lord, let me forever be connected to you. Do not permit me to do whatever will lead to a disconnection. Amen

Sojourn in Egypt

Gen 47:4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen

From the onset, the family of Joseph declared they would be in Egypt only for a temporary period, a sojourn while the five years of famine ravaged the lands. They only requested only for a temporary dwelling in Egypt. Of course, we know they eventually stayed longer than they initially stated …we do not know if the brothers tricked Pharaoh in that they had no intention of going back …at least not in their life time. It would not have been surprising, as trickery used to be a part of their style. It was more likely that they were so welcome that they decided to stay.

Do we not equally sing that we are pilgrims, yet we are in a time when most doubt that a Heavenly home still exists for us to return to. Indeed our lives on earth are like a tiny needle in a huge haystack -Heaven …yet we dwell more on that tiny needle. We are lost in the trappings of Egypt and no more see ourselves as pilgrims or sojourners.

The understanding that today’s Pharaoh has is that true Christians are Pilgrims. But Satan, the world and the flesh collaborate first to welcome the Pilgrim, make them ever so comfortable and at ease and gradually enslave them into lusts, passions and ambitions until they forget their home – Canaan. Does this plot work … Do ask the brethren and their family after five years in Goshen if they wanted to return to Canaan … after tasting the luscious grapes. They will laugh and wonder if you are serious. Indeed, the remaining five years of famine caused them to migrate to Egypt, but what is it that keeps them in Egypt.

In this devotional, I would want you to focus on the word sojourn. It means a temporary stopover, a rest, a break …it is never used to suggest a permanent home. It is used to imply a trip to a place for a period – usually brief. On earth, are you a sojourner or are you a permanent resident. What is the nature of your visa? Is it visiting or does it say permanent resident? Your attitudes, activities and priorities and investments are a reflection on your official status on the earth. Do you see people with temporary visit visas (staying perhaps only for summer) competing with permanent residents for business and opportunities? The tenure of your visa is only known to God … does this reality fill you with joy nor do you wish like many temporary residents in Britain pray that you will be given a permanent citizenship …will you marry a non-believer for a permanent resident status. Things can be difficult for the sojourner and tribulations can be many – but his thoughts of home will comfort him. May God help us.

Song.

Elect from every nation, Yet one oe’r all the earth,

Her charter of salvation – one Lord, one faith, one birth,

One holy name she blesses partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,

She waits the consummation of peace for evermore.

Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

Prayer: Lord, remind me always of my true home, awaiting my return. Let me never forget that I am only a Pilgrim for you. Let the purpose of my sojourn be accomplished. Amen

Caution in Egypt

Gen 47:2 And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

Joseph did not overwhelm Pharaoh with the entire household, but slowly and cautiously progressed a strategy. Egypt is a place of caution. The Pilgrim cannot be impatient and must wait for divine signals – watching for timing and ensuring that the words he uses are the right ones given to him. Indeed, Joseph was influential, but he was still very cautious in confronting the culture of Egypt with the Hebrew race.

God has called you and He will guide you, but you must be exercised in patience and caution. You must learn to wait. An open door is not necessarily a go sign and certainly not a flag to stampede the situation. Tread cautiously in Egypt, for there are many traps.

Psa 106:15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

Many have mistaken, the granting of requests to mean the pleasure of God. God is not known to be pushed and rushed into situations, mainly driven by lust for specific conclusions and answers … and the best way to teach the impatient is often to grant his request and sending a leanness as well to teach a lesson, that God is not our servant, but we are His. God does not exist for our pleasure, but we exist for His. We should not be slothful – but at the same time we should not be careless and filled with presumptions. Our obedience requires discernment on the appropriate strategy. True there are things that must be done with boldness and haste and like Esther we must go fasted but confidently before Ahaseurus …but note that this was confirmed by Mordecai. It is wise to receive Godly confirmation and counsel from several witnesses if your spirit advises a general caution. Learn patience … it is one of the most noble of virtues.

Song.

Order my steps with your word

Let me follow only as I’ve heard

Teach me to wait as I obey my Lord

Keep me from presumption as I loosen my sword.

Order my steps with your word

Egypt has traps laid…and poisons to abort

Watch my lips and help my zeal

Never for a moment to stray from your will.

Order my steps with your word

The doors are open – but why is my Lord

advising caution and urging restraint

as angels precede and make safe the narrow pathways.

Prayer: Lord, Help my zeal … order my steps … when the doors are open unto me. Amen

Divine Guidance

Gen 47:1 Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

Joseph undertook to be a guide to ensure the preservation of his brethren – and particularly their culture. You also need a guide, the Great Counselor to help you navigate through your Christian walk, now that you have known the Lord. Do not take a step without checking well from Him, what you should or not do. Let the Holy Spirit introduce you into situations. Leaning to your understanding in Egypt is dangerous. Already your ways are taboo to the culture in which you will now dwell. You may not appreciate the irritation you will cause although you mean well. You will need to be kept by Jehovah. Even your substance must be committed to Christ and your entire family. All must be submitted to God and yielded unto Him completely. Do not attempt to face Pharaoh alone, the outcome could be unpredictable.

We must learn to live by prayer. Prayer is our means of seeking a strategy from the Holy Spirit. Do not enter into a contract without checking? Do not do a deal without checking? Let the Spirit of Christ guide you every step of the way until you reach your goal – Heaven. Do not take for granted that in Goshen, the place of being called out, the place of separation – you are safe. You still need to be baptized by the Holy Spirit and led appropriately. The plan of the Holy Spirit is to keep you in the world but separated from the evil in the world – somehow. This is no easy task – as the world culture is very compelling, forceful and all embracing. The worldview of modernism is very intelligent and logical. As soon as you are immersed through education, media etc. your mind is washed in another flood of a different nature. The seas of the world are tempestuous and full of rapids and hidden rocks…

Joh 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Christ keeps us from the evil that is in Egypt, giving us the word – the truth … to sanctify us through the truth that the world does not know. We are sanctified and kept not by a monastery-type isolation, but by knowing the word of God well. We are guided not by following gurus but mastery of the scriptures. How much of scriptures do you know? How many verses have been intuitively committed to your memory? How many Biblical thoughts have been stored in the crevices of your mind. You cannot be full of scripture and also full of worldliness … one must saturate your thoughts or the other will. Make a fresh commitment to study the word of God – day and night.

Song.

Lead us, Heavenly Father, lead us – o’er the world’s tempestuous sea;

guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, for we have no help but thee;

yet possessing every blessing, if our God our Father be.

Prayer: Lord, Help me to be separate. Amen

Shepherds

Gen 46:31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father’s house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father’s house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;32 And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. 33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? 34 That ye shall say, Thy servants’ trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

Shepherds are nomadic tribesmen, going from place to place, setting up tents to dwell and not builders of cities and civilizations. Egypt was the exact opposite …they built civilizations and found great cities with splendid architecture but the culture of shepherds was repulsive to them. But even till today, shepherds do not fit the city culture. Shepherds were amongst the first to know of the birth of Christ, as they were led to the manager where He lay. Christ is referred to as the good shepherd. Christians are likened to sheep not wolves …sheep who hear and recognize the call of their master.

The work of the shepherd is boring, tedious and messy. Leading sheep to waters and protecting them from wolves and lions or bears can be risky? But David, the man after God’s heart started as a shepherd, and it was amongst sheep that he was prepared for the palace. The same with Moses … unlike Solomon – who was a builder of cities that people came from afar to see. The ways of shepherds do not agree with city dwellers just as serving God and mammon cannot both be done. Doing one makes you and enemy to the other. The culture of the kingdom of God is abomination to that of earthly civilizations and vice versa is also true. Invariably we must choose.

Joseph – the good shepherd, may have told them to hide their true occupation to be accepted in Egypt and freely mingle with the Egyptians …this may have its benefits – but it would have been a choice that would have led to the destruction of their Hebrew culture which God wanted preserved. What choice are you making? Do you see the gulf of difference between the present culture of today and the ways of the kingdom? Every culture and civilization has its supervising principality … thus we are told we wrestle not against flesh and blood but spiritual entities that control earthly kings and worldviews.

It is a good sign when there is a tension between your kingdom habits and how the world cultivates its success. Do not be surprised at the enmity that seems to thrive between the culture of the kingdom of God and the culture of postmodern civilization. Again, the question is “who is on the Lord’s side, who will serve the King?” The work of serving the King is to find lost sheep and bring them back home. The religion of modern civilization is humanism. Man is their god.

Song.

Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King? Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?

Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe? Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?

By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Not for weight of glory, nor for crown and palm, Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;

But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died: He whom Jesus nameth must be on His side.

By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Prayer: Lord, Help me to see that serving you will cause some rejection. Comfort me. Amen

A Glimpse of Eternity

Gen 46:30 And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.

When we catch a glimpse of eternity, we are immediately freed of all the shackles and attractions of the earth. Our clamoring to be something or to live very long or to do this or that is really a sign that we are yet to see the spiritual Goshen. The early Christians and I believe Christians in tough periods or hostile locations are helped by the gift of this rare vision. It is easy to release everything including our earthly suit of mud if we caught a glimpse of our eternal body waiting for us to last all through eternity without aging. Sin loses all attraction and is seen as the enemy it is. Like Esther, we can say if I perish, I perish.

This proclamation really means, Lord tear apart if you wish – all my ambitions … and the Jacob who out-schemed Esau and Laban understood ambitions … like most of us. Jacob declares that God is more than able to bring all His plans to pass without our slightest maneuvers except that we simply trust Him. All our maneuvers must die, all our ambitions must bow to His will, all our projections must be buried …and all placed in the casket of divine providence to be resurrected as God desires.

Note that the previously fainting Israel lived well over a decade after this declaration. Esther lived to become a heroine after she buried her ambitions. God is waiting for us to catch a glimpse of what He has already prepared for us. We will equally say…”Now, let me die” …but God has now found a rare instrument for His glory – an uncommon ally … If only we declared this earlier, when we are younger. Teach your children and youths more about Heaven ..and see the difference in how God is able to use lives that are “dead” to the world’s magnetic pull. Because Jesus is alive … we can face tomorrow whatsoever it brings – even death has lost all its sting … it will only one day be a glorious transition. Halleluyah to the Lamb …

Song.

Let us, then be true and faithful – Trusting serving every day

Just one glimpse of Him in glory – will the toils of life repay.

When we all get to Heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be!

When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory.

Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold;

Soon the pearly gates will open, we shall tread the streets of gold.

When we all get to Heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be!

When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory.

Prayer: Lord, Help me to release all my selfish ambitions and fears …knowing that Jesus is alive to see me through whatever comes – even death. Amen
