Goshen

Gen 45:9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: 11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.

Location is important to God. Are you properly located. How and if you survive difficult will greatly depend on your location. Are you in the Goshen that God has made for you. Remember Naomi who left Bethlehem in the famine and went to the land of Moab. This was the wrong move and the wrong location. It only brought death. But relocating can be positive if it is a Goshen we find but Moab can resemble Goshen. Still we need to know that location matters. There is a place of divine nourishment and there is a place of death. Check with God. Goshen is a place where you are near to God as well as your household to be nourished spiritually and physically by Him.

A few more words on Moab. It is a location of self-will. A place of alluring pleasures and excess. May God open our eyes to relocate before we are devoured – if in Moab …and to seek fresh insight from Him to discover our Goshen. Goshen is the place of grace …the price and cost has been fully settled at Calvary.

Song.

Far dearer than all that the world can impart

Was the message came to my heart.

How that Jesus alone for my sin did atone,

And Calvary covers it all.

Calvary covers it all, My past with its sin and stain;

My guilt and despair Jesus took on Him there,

And Calvary covers it all.

The stripes that He bore and the thorns that He wore

Told His mercy and lover evermore

And my heart bowed in shame as I called on His name,

And Calvary covers it all.

How matchless the grace, when I looked in the face

Of this Jesus, my crucified Lord;

My redemption complete I then found at His feet,

And Calvary covers it all.

How blessed the thought, that my soul by Him bought,

Shall be His in the glory on high;

Where with gladness and song, I’ll be one of the throng

And Calvary covers it all.

And Calvary covers it all

Prayer: Lord, lead me to the locations covered by Calvary …my Goshen. The place of nourishments that you paid for. Amen.

Secrets of Wealth

Gen 45:9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: 11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.

Is God concerned about things like our wealth and supplying our needs? Indeed He must be. This Bible text shows He cares that we do not fall into poverty. There are some principles worth considering from this passage.

1. Those who will prosper are diligent. Men who can make haste to obey God and do things quickly. The slothful and procrastinator will find wealth elusive. Make haste to do as God has revealed to you.

1Sa 21:8 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.

2. Those who will remain close to God. Living a life of close fellowship with the Holy God can open doors. God is far from the proud and cannot behold sin … Be watchful especially of pride.

3. Depending fully on God for nourishment as He knows where the green pastures are. To depend on God is not an elementary issue. We have been programmed from birth to be self-made and at best use God to fill in the gaps. Many who claim to depend and have given testimonies of provision actually have not given the full picture. When you are able to give out your last meal uncertain of where the next will come from, it is more indicative that your eyes are on God. When you say no to what men can do for you – then see God say yes.

3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth

God emphasizes the prosperity of the soul first. Salvation, sanctification and assurance of a future glorification counts far more as foundational matters for which material wealth can be laid. But for the one who is fully set apart to obey God, the God who says the silver and the gold belongs to Him and watches all the resources mismanaged by Pharaohs and Barons. What do you think will be his greatest wish? God will not want His name embarrassed as will happen if He gives wealth to those who eventually bring His name to disrepute … for Him these are worse than outright devils. But when God finds a David or a Nehemiah or someone dedicated to the finer points of hearing God, God must then rush resources as this wealth will be properly utilized and not consumed on lusts. Indeed, these are a rare breed even in the Church. I perceive that is why God is more anxious to make the obedient wealthy as He wants to be magnified and there is purpose to wealth – to establish His covenant . It is an anomaly that God’s wealth is in the hands of the wicked. Discover and apply His principles.

Song.

Take my silver and my gold;

Not a mite would I withhold;

Take my intellect, and use

Every power as Thou shalt choose,

Prayer: Lord, I need my soul to prosper first. Help me to be fully set apart for you. Amen.

Let God make You.

Gen 45:8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

Joseph was not self-made but made my God. We can make ourselves into many things but still far from what God can make us. God made Joseph a father to Pharaoh … meaning he was head over Pharaoh’s family, lord of the house of Pharaoh … meaning He controlled all the wealth and resources, nothing could be spent without his permission and Joseph was also ruler – prime minister of Egypt. He was in charge. Do you see that Joseph could not in his wildest dreams have made himself more than a senior servant in the house of Potiphar – with the help of Potiphar’s wife … and even with the help of everyone he ever met … perhaps they could have made him captain over the prisons. But compare this to what God made Him. His father would have made him the lord over much cattle and tents about to be devoured in a famine.  God always has a better plan.

The Bible says we have been wonderfully made to be Kings and priests … a royal priesthood, a holy nation … a peculiar nation, called out of darkness to a marvelous light. Our Lord the King of kings, our High Priest . But what have we made ourselves? Professors, engineers, farmers, business men etc. God is not against professions but are we functioning in what God has made us or making ourselves into something else.

The enemy of our true destiny loves to see us grovel below what we are meant to be. He loves it when we do not understand what God has promised to make us and all the compromises that eventually leaves us short of the glory we should have had. If only we knew what disobedience and careless wandering is really costing us, we would never stray a moment from our prime calling. We are not arrows shooting blindly but well targeted to achieve a glorious purpose. In reality, the one who is most powerful to tamper with our destiny is us. When we play with Potiphar’s wife or slide into bitter murmurings in the prison cell …we unknowingly truncate our destiny. Sin is a destiny stealer. Yet God is merciful to raise Joseph against all odds to rule over the vast empire of Egypt. What has God planned to make you? What are you planning to make yourself? Be amazed at the wide gulf as you compare both. Lean on God.

Song.

He is able more than able to accomplish what concerns me today

He is able more than able to handle everything that comes my way

He is able more than able to do much more than I could ever dream

He is able more than able to make me what He wants me to be …

Prayer: All Powerful God, Make me as you had ordained before the foundations of the earth – Amen

A Great Deliverance

Gen 45:6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Joseph explains that his brothers only facilitated a great deliverance. The brothers did not know that the famine was to last five more years, and without Joseph they would all have died of hunger. What lessons emerge from his text in today’s devotional? Let us meditate on only three.

1. Life and death is in the hands of God. Indeed many would have perished during this seven year famine. The years of plenty and famine were all decreed and controlled by God.

2. God will preserve His own – one way or another. None that ever puts His trust in Him will ever regret or suffer a lack of divine provision.

3. A great deliverance counters a great famine – both ordained of God. There is no problem too vast for which a matching deliverance has not already been put in place ahead. The Almighty does not work in time. He can start the work of deliverance decades ahead of any sign of trouble.

Why is this called a great deliverance? It is great in its concealment … no one could ever discover this deliverance. It is great in its magnitude. God translates a tribe of hungry wandering tent dwellers who were an abomination to Egypt into people who bask in the best of royal provisions and stores/barns of a wealthy civilization that abhorred their very existence. It is great in its authorship. It was all the work of a great and mighty God. We need to appreciate the great deliverances of the Almighty to see how puny our thinking can be. How can we ever do anything but worship a God that can begin a work of protection over ten years before we even perceive the need for deliverance. God is truly awesome – even Joseph does not know the plan until he sees his brothers in need of provisions at a time of great death. Jehovah is not an ordinary deliverer. He is a great deliverer – an awesome deliverer.

Now compare your challenges of today to what God did in this text and observe that your issues are elementary, way too easy for God to deal with and bring the required restoration. He can store the food supplies in hidden places waiting for you. Israel and his clan did not labor a single day for the provisions they enjoyed … provisions Egypt gathered and stored for seven years. Perhaps you only need to wait a few more years for what you will enjoy to be fully stored up by those that cannot even stand your presence. God is awesome.

Song.

My God is awesome, He can move the mountains,

Keep me in the valley, hide me from the rain,

My God is awesome, heals me when I’m broken,

Strength where I’ve been weakened

Forever He will reign

My God is awesome, Savior of the whole world,

Giver of salvation, by His stripes I am healed

My God is awesome, today I’m forgiven

His grace is why I’m living

Praise His Holy Name.

Prayer: Great Deliverer – Be my strength, my shield and my helper. Amen

God Preserves Life.

Gen 45:5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life..

There are many things God has done just to preserve your life. We do not appreciate many of these things or we see them as against us, but God knows how to ensure we live to declare His glory and purpose. He has ways to preserve our destiny that He must hide from even our perceptions. He knows that often we can be our own worst enemy. In the story of Joseph, God uses accusation, hatred, delays, pain, forced separation, imprisonment, temptation, abandonment and the foolishness of speaking of our dreams too early to ensure that the tribe of Israel is preserved. He may use different ways but He is faithful. God is sovereign and we should not fight tough circumstances because we do not know if he is using these very circumstances to progress our destiny in a way we can never imagine. God may be using a delay or He may be using an accusation or He may be using a cruel rejection. I observe that God must use even our inclinations to promote His agenda. The brothers were sure they were in control and all their hatred and plots only served God well. This is a mystery and points us to remember God’s sovereignty in all issues … knowing He preserves His own using ways and methods we cannot predict, stop or even discern at times. In the end the great and mighty God must have His way – and His expected end is a noble one. Glory be to God.

Song.

Glory be to God the Father,

Glory be to God the Son,

Glory be to God the Spirit—

Great Jehovah, Three in One!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

While eternal ages run!

Glory be to Him who loved us,

Washed us from each spot and stain!

Glory be to Him who bought us,

Made us kings with Him to reign!

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

To the Lamb that once was slain!

Glory to the King of angels,

Glory to the Church’s King,

Glory to the King of nations!

Heaven and earth, your praises bring;

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

To the King of Glory bring!

“Glory, blessing, praise eternal!”

Thus the choir of angels sings;

“Honor, riches, power, dominion!”

Thus its praise creation brings.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Glory to the King of kings.

Prayer: Lord, All the glory, all the honor and power belongs to you forever. Be magnified in our lives. Amen

Be not Grieved nor Angry.

Gen 45:5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life..

What great words of comfort. Do not be sad, angry or troubled. mMany are angry with God and with themselves at how their lives had turned out. Was it really their fault that they had to fight forces that overcame them even from early years…where was Jesus when temptations seem to rage and lead them into wickedness … Why did we have to suffer so much losses? There are so many things that cause us much sorrowing, grief, anger and confusion. We have been overcome by bondage, sin and the terror of darkness. Jesus does not condemn anyone. His words to His own are comforting. I died and suffered for those things you did wrong – your sins – so that you will one day come higher to me. God already sent Jesus ahead to preserve our lives in a wicked world already sold to sin and destruction.

Joseph does not condemn his brothers. He reminds them instead that God has already gone ahead to preserve their lives. Judah’s family must be preserved for the coming Savior – the Lion of Judah – Jesus was to be born through the lineage of Judah. Joseph must be raised up for God’s divine purpose to prosper.

The Bible says all things work together for the good of the righteous, the chosen that love God. All things and not some. Even the things that should make you angry are working for your good. The things that should make you grieve in sorrow are working for your good. Your mistakes are also working for your good – bad as they are. Do not try and apportion blame to any and be angry with your pastor or leader or wife or whoever it seems is at fault….are we not all faulty in one way. Instead simply thank God that He is working His great work through your life even though you do not yet see all the pieces falling as you expect.

Joseph says all the brothers did to him was simply be an instrument of God. This is rather deep. Joseph says God sent him …when did God call Joseph? I do not recall any commissioning. But in all the cruel dealings and submission to the ill treatment and accusations and imprisonment and being forgotten, Joseph was being sent ahead to preserve life. There is a purpose to the victory ahead .. to serve the purpose of God. God has apprehended your life for a reason. Soon it will be clear to you. Be not grieved nor angry.

Song.

Art thou weary, art thou languid,

Art thou sore distressed?

“Come to Me,” saith One, “and coming,

Be at rest.”

Hath He marks to lead me to Him,

If He be my Guide?

In His feet and hands are wound prints

And His side.

Hath He diadem, as monarch,

That His brow adorns?

Yes, a crown in very surety,

But of thorns.

If I find Him, if I follow,

What His guerdon here?

Many a sorrow, many a labor,

Many a tear.

If I still hold closely to Him,

What hath He at last?

Sorrow vanquished, labor ended,

Jordan passed.

If I ask Him to receive me,

Will He say me nay?

Not till earth and not till Heaven

Pass away.

Finding, following, keeping, struggling

Is He sure to bless?

Saints, apostles, prophets, martyrs,

Answer, Yes!

Prayer: Lord, Be glorified in my thoughts …put an end to grief and anger. Amen

Come Near to Jesus

Gen 45:4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

Jesus once told the disciples when He rose from the dead that it is He that they crucified. Doubting Thomas needed to touch His hands and feel the nail prints, the wounds that were still visible on His body. Jesus wants us to come nearer to Him to discover that indeed He has died for our sins and is calling us to be cleansed by the blood that He shed at Calvary. We must come up higher to He that dwells on high. As we come higher to Him, we drop the weights of fear, doubt, sin and foolishness. As we come nearer we see Christ has been glorified. He is not bitter or vengeful about His crucifixion, but more concerned that His work be not in vain. He does not want us in pain, fear or sin again. He is sad when we enter into bondages He has already paid for.

Joseph has similar feelings towards his brothers and wants them to see that God only used the situation to cause Him to protect and raise them up to join him albeit in a time of famine. Joseph wants them to come close to examine him well … indeed there are marks that only brethren can identify. Joseph reminds them that it was their wicked actions God used to bring Him to this exalted place.

When we come near to Jesus, we feel His compassion, His love, His forgiveness … we hear Him, we begin to know Him and love Him. When we come near to Jesus, darkness flees from our heart as darkness cannot come close to Jesus. We come near to Jesus by meditating more on the word of God as He is the word made flesh. We understand and have a deeper revelation of the fellowship of His suffering and the power of His resurrection. We are crucified with Him – therefore we no longer live, Christ lives in us. Christ becomes everything .. our all in all. Lord draw me nearer to you today.

Song.

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me;

But I long to rise in the arms of faith And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessèd Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died.

Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessèd Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the power of grace divine;

Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine.

O the pure delight of a single hour That before Thy throne I spend,

When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God I commune as friend with friend!

There are depths of love that I cannot know Till I cross the narrow sea;

There are heights of joy that I may not reach – Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Prayer: Lord, Draw me nearer to you never to be apart from you, again. Amen

What to do when troubled.

Gen 45:4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

What do you do when you sense troubles in your spirit. When you feel overwhelmed and suddenly out of words ..when you do not know what to do? The answer is to come nearer to Jesus. Coming nearer to Jesus could imply many things … separation from other and previous centers of focus. It could be taking time off to be alone with God or just being silent before Him or worshipping and resting in His presence. This does not seem to appease the trouble but it will allow comfort from the wells of God’s presence bringing a relief we cannot explain.

When we come near to Jesus, we discover a love, grace and forgiveness that disarms us. Soon we wonder why we need be troubled in the presence of such power and might that offers a hand of friendship. We discover that the king of all Kings is also our brother and our friend. As we get closer and sense the dwellings under His mighty shadow, our troubles begin to vanish, and our fears begin to fade. But God must draw us close to Him … He invites us and awaits our response … to end our troubles and find the rest that we need. He also corrects us, chastens us and His sayings will be hard … but we can sense that this is the truth that sets free.

Song.

Draw me close to You

Never let me go

I lay it all down again

To hear You say that I’m Your friend

You are my desire

No one else will do

‘Cause nothing else could take Your place

To feel the warmth of Your embrace

Help me find the way

Bring me back to You

You’re all I want

You’re all I’ve ever needed

You’re all I want

Help me know You are near

Prayer: Lord, draw me closer to you and calm my troubled heart. Amen

The Troubles of The Redeemed

Gen 45:3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

As soon as we know Christ as our Lord and Savior, we enter into His salvation, but we are also soon afflicted with troubles. We fight many doubts. Are we really delivered? Has Christ completely forgiven us? Will we make it to the end? What if we suddenly fall by the wayside? What if we are not His chosen? We sometimes have memories that haunt us? Even as we mature in our walk with the Lord, we can face situations that cause us to wonder if the Lord will turn against us. Are we his enemies knowing how we have hurt and disobeyed Him?

On hearing this strange revelation of Joseph, many questions immediately arose … many troubling questions? Will Joseph forgive us? How will their father take the whole story? Will there be revenge? Is this the beginning of sorrow? Indeed, there will be many questions requiring answers. Doubts to many doubts. Now Joseph controls the machinery of Egypt – will he use his power to punish them? Although it appears Joseph will spare them, the brothers remember all the tests – and wish they had performed better. The brothers will wish they had treated Joseph better. Those who wanted to say a word to defend Joseph but kept quiet will now regret.

Someone said once in eternity, all will wish they had loved Jesus more. All will wish they had served Him better. All will wish they had given more to Him, defended Him more. We will regret our lack of zeal and wish we had spent more of our wealth and time on evangelism and souls. We will all wish we had put in much more than we did into the service of the Kingdom of Heaven. We will be apprehensive when our works are burnt, how much will really remain. What will be left behind?

But in all these troubles, the presence of the Prince of Peace brings us an assurance that all is well. The Bible says when we see Him we shall be like Him. We have been changed, redeemed, sanctified, transformed to His likeness. We are no more slaves to sin … we are the bride dressed in a gown without spot or any wrinkle. The bible says the righteous are delivered from all their afflictions and troubles. This revelation was the most awesome event in the history of the family – yet it initially only caused troubling thoughts to attack the mind of his brothers. In conclusion, do not dwell on your feelings, do not dwell on your hunches, do not believe the evidence that contradicts the word of God. Simply continue to live by faith. Our feelings can run riot at times polluted with guilt and corrupted memories. Dwell instead on the word and promises of God – be firmly planted on the Rock of Ages. Soon you will hear the Master say “Peace be still” to all your troubles.

Song.

Master, with anguish in spirit, I bow in my grief today;

The depths of my sad heart are troubled, O waken and save, I pray;

Torrents of sin and of anguish,Sweep o’er my sinking soul!

And I perish! I perish! dear Master; O hasten, and take control!

Master, the terror is over,The elements sweetly rest;

Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored, And Heaven’s within my breast.

Linger, O blessed Redeemer, Leave me alone no more;

And with joy I shall make the blest harbor, And rest on the blissful shore.

Prayer: Lord, Speak your peace to all my troubles. Amen

I Am

Gen 45:3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

Joseph tells his brethren … I am Joseph. God revealed himself to Moses who feared to begin his assignment as was commissioned ..

Exo 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Every things changed when Joseph revealed himself. Their understanding of God changed. Their understanding of themselves and their situations also changed. Their understanding of their mission in life … and in Egypt also changed. Their vision of life and their hopes for tomorrow also changed. The correct revelation of identity affects how we see ourselves and others. For the brothers …the revelation of Joseph as alive and a leader in Egypt proved to be a troubling shock.

God tells Moses to introduce Him as I AM – the everlasting, self-sufficient, self-existent, eternal, inexhaustible. He is the unchangeable, faithful and true God. Joseph declares that God has protected him, helped him, sustained him and eventually promoted him. Joseph declares that there is a supreme all-knowing ever powerful intelligence that watches over His purposes and causes His will to prosper. Joseph reveals in this troubling revelation that they cannot stop what God has purposed and men do not present any threat to the Most High God in the very least. At this stage in history, knowledge of God was somewhat limited … and the brothers of Joseph do not know how to answer … they oscillate between sheer disbelief and wonder …can it be true was the question on their mind. I pray God will reveal himself to you in a way that silences all opposition to simply bow and honor Him. Praise the great I AM.

Song.

God of earth, God of sky: Lord, on Thee all things rely.

God of time, God of space: Father Thou of Adam’s race;

Torn from Thee by Adam’s fall, Lord, to Thee we raise the call:

“God of time, God of space, Meet with us in this place.”

Spotless Lamb come for me, Reconcile my debt to Thee.

Sinful men, helpless, lost, With Thy life’s blood paid the cost;

Take away our bent to sin: Wash our hearts and cleanse with in.

Lamb of God slain for me, Lamb of Life, hear my plea.

Bread of Life, Daily Bread, By Thy grace our souls are fed.

Broken once all to feed, Give us strength for ev’ry need.

Blest communion thro’ the Son, All our hearts are knit as one:

Bread of Life, Dai ly Bread, To Thy feast we are led.

King of kings, Lord of lords— Heaven’s anthems shout the chords.

Holy God, Angel Bright; Conqu’ror of the Hosts of Night.

Alleluia! Praise the Lamb! God of Ages, Great “I AM!”

Master, Lord, claim Thine own: Take my heart as Thy throne

Prayer: Lord, Be forever praised… The Great I AM. Amen
