Face to Face
Gen 46:29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.
What would it be like when we meet someone we love so dearly and have longed to see someday – uncertain if you will ever meet …but still it remains the greatest hope of joy – that someday you will behold him. The joy when we behold the Lord is so indescribable, the tears of happiness …the realization that we made it …and forever. This joy is that which exceeds the unspeakable joy and full of glory mentioned in 1 Peter 1:8. If though we see Him not, but having the assurance that one day we will – already fills us with unspeakable joy … imagine how it will be when we actually see our master face to face.
1Pe 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory
There are no words to describe this meeting. We know it was in Goshen – the separated place … where there were no Egyptians. There will be tears …tears of Christ all over our neck … and our tears as well …but for joy. These are the tears mentioned in Revelation 7:17 that will be wiped away. There will be a personal welcome embrace … Christ drawing us into His arms …welcoming us like a lost son anxiously awaited – who has just returned home. The early Christians as they faced martyrdom believed so much in this coming joyful union that they asked those who were being burnt on the stake to give a sign that the end was as glorious as they expected it will be …and many as they perished did … just like Stephen to encourage others … no wonder many rejected deliverance.
Act 7:54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into Heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the Heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
Even before they started stoning Stephen, Jesus was already waiting for Him at “Goshen” …knowing he was about to be martyred. If we ever saw what Stephen saw as he looked steadfastly into Heaven …we will all wish we had been martyred …a crown was waiting for him. Lord give a revelation of the joy that is ahead …that has never been told by any.
Song.
I have found His grace is all complete, He supplieth every need;
While I sit and learn at Jesus’ feet,I am free, yes, free indeed.
Refrain:
It is joy unspeakable and full of glory, Full of glory, full of glory;
It is joy unspeakable and full of glory, Oh, the half has never yet been told.
I have found that hope so bright and clear, Living in the realm of grace;
Oh, the Savior’s presence is so near,I can see His smiling face.
I have found the joy no tongue can tell, How its waves of glory roll;
It is like a great o’erflowing well, Springing up within my soul.
Prayer: Lord, keep me singing for joy, even now and into an even more joyful union with you. Amen

A Place of Nourishment
Gen 46:28 And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen
The Bible tells us that 70 souls came to Egypt of the House of Israel. From the onset they were to be separated from the rest of Egypt in a beautiful place called Goshen. Israel was particularly interested in the plan of separation and sent Judah in advance to know the territory. The understanding of the command – Be ye separate, has always been a doctrinal issue that has been at the core of many controversies in the Church. How do we become separate and be effective in evangelism?
Our evangelism must also involve letting the world see that we are different in every regard. We dwell in a land with different rules and abide with different regulations. The Bible is our constitution and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal. We are pilgrims – and our home is a distinctively different place. This should give us encouragement … knowing we came from a better place and will one day return there.
But there are more lessons. Judah is to be directed to Goshen. God wants us focused and directed on our Heavenly home. Not enough is written or preached about Heaven, but I tell you, I wish you could imagine how beautiful Heaven must really be. I wish your focus and attention could be more directed on Heaven. It is a myth that the Church is too Heaven minded. Indeed, there are far too many distractions even in the church for that to be true. The idea of a separate place called Heaven is now perceived even in many congregations as allegorical and not a literal place. Many Christians believe the earth is all that there is. Do not fall into this trap. Learn to live separately in your lifestyle and manner even from now … knowing you will be eternally separated from unbelievers eventually. But from now, even if you sense you are in Egypt, there is still a place God has reserved for you. You can be different, worship God as He has demanded to be worshipped – in Spirit and in Truth … and live as His chosen race and not as men and women of Egypt. Sing about your home in Heaven …even when you are here on earth. Enjoy the separated sanctified life of the chosen of God.
Song.
I shall wear a golden crown, When I get home; I shall lay my burdens down, When I get home;
Clad in robes of glory, I shall sing the story – Of the Lord who bought me, When I get home.
Refrain:
When I get home, when I get home,
All sorrow will be over when I get home;
When I get home, when I get home,
All sorrow will be over when I get home.
All the darkness will be past, When I get home; I shall see the light at last, When I get home;
Light from Heaven streaming, O’er my pathway beaming, Ever guides me onward, Till I get home.
I shall see my Savior’s face, When I get home; Sing again of saving grace, When I get home;
I shall stand before Him; Gladly I’ll adore Him, Ever to be with Him, When I get home.
Prayer: Lord, as you use me on this earth for your glory, let my life be directed on my Heavenly home.

Let none call you Barren
Gen 46:20 And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him. Gen 46:21 And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard. Gen 46:22 These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen
Rachel at a time was written off as barren … later she receives mercy and gives birth to Joseph. She eventually dies giving birth to Benjamin. A sad story …she was late in being fruitful but her life was pivotal to the history of Israel. Her first son has only two sons, but Joseph becomes the strategic lever that delivers Israel from a seven year famine. Benjamin has ten sons. The souls that came through Rachel are counted as 14. Have things appeared to be late for you? Did you start too late? Like Rachel’s life was suddenly terminated at birth of her son … have your dreams been suddenly cut off. Do not despair. Reflect that much fruitfulness came after her death. Still I pray that God will cause you to enjoy fruitfulness in your lifetime and not after your death.
Imagine the joy for Joseph who did not know his mother … if Rachel had been there to share the days of glory. You will not sow and another reap. You will be blessed and see the glory of God at work in your lifetime. You will be fruitful beyond your dreams in your lifetime. Out of your seed, God will raise an army for Himself. Those who wrote you off once will be amazed at the unprecedented turnaround in your situation. You will not die a premature death nor will anyone reading this devotional die at child birth. All your deliveries will be attended by divine midwives … angels assigned by God to help. Your sons will not become street urchins or drop outs … they will be successful.
Your blessings will be counted and you will say – see what the Lord has done.
Song.
Count your blessings, name them one by one
Count your blessings see what God has done
Count your blessings; name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Prayer: Lord, Let it be said that God has been good to me in His blessings. Give me all round fruitfulness. Amen

Beneficiaries
Gen 46:6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: 7 His sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
This text describes the many that were preserved by the pains of only one man. The sons and daughters and grandchildren all benefited. Indeed, there are beneficiaries …our children and even their seed who benefit from the covenants we make with God. Also, when we stray … the consequences are not limited to us. It also means we are benefitting from many things we know nothing about but could also imply we groan under negative covenants.
If Joseph had disobeyed God … in the famine of the next five years, the entire clan may have been completely wiped out. Do you see that though your obedience may not be appreciated by relations and at the time they did not understand what God was demanding from your life. But they benefit from your obedience and may even suffer from curses if you disregard the commandments of God. When people are blessed they are typically not blessed alone … the overflowing nature of God’s blessings pours into the lives of thousands but the anger of God which thankfully is only for a moment can be catastrophic for many generations unborn.
Do not take God lightly … think of your children and grandchildren before indulging in those few minutes of sin. The entire seed were brought out of a horrible famine … not just the brothers of Joseph. Reflect on this when next Potiphar’s wife approaches you … consider the real cost. There are indeed thousands you have never seen that will benefit from your obedience to pray for revival and do the work entrusted in your hands faithfully. The faithfulness of God is great.
Song.
Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord my Father – there is no shadow of turning with thee
Thou changest not, thy compassion they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever will be
Great is thy faithfulness 2ce Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed thy hands have provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.
Pardon for sin and peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide
Strength for today and bright hopes for tomorrow
Blessings all mine and ten thousands beside.
Prayer: Lord, Help me to be faithful … for the sake of generations after me …Keep me faithful..Amen.

Rising up into Glory
Gen 46:4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. 5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
Israel is keen only to the extent that God backs him up. God tells Israel that He will not be alone and that he will spend the rest of His life in Egypt, Joseph His beloved son who thought to be dead will be there for him even in his old age and dying moments. God also wants Israel to know that the sojourn in Egypt will only be for a period and that God will bring them up … again. Is it not wise to hear God clearly before making your moves?
Wagons, riches and doors can be seductive, but they can be only great traps if we do not know what God is doing. How do we hear God in a noisy world? To hear God we need altars, we need a place of silence … a place of devotion. God still speaks. He speaks through His word powerfully if only we will spend time reading the Bible. He speaks through the pulpit if we do not have a puppet of men preaching. He speaks through His creation if we can be silent to discern his leadings.
God predicts the Exodus, many generations earlier. Indeed Abraham was also given this prophecy of the future. God sees the future and He does not hide this vision from His own. As you read this devotional, it is pertinent to hear what God is speaking to you. If you are not hearing anything and must go blind, then consider that Egypt is a dangerous territory… Pharaoh is presented so far as a mild gentle monarch. but let the Bible tell you who Pharaoh really is …
Eze 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.
Without God on your side and without His help … put plainly you do not stand a chance. The great dragon has sent wagons and a lavish entourage to receive you … you are foolish to be impressed and lured into a scenario that has not been checked with God. It is time to rise up to glory – but not before hearing from God and receiving His assurances.
Song.
Call Jehovah thy salvation, Rest beneath th’Almighty’s shade,
In His secret habitation – Dwell and never be dismayed:
There no tumult shall alarm thee, thou shalt dread no hidden snare;
Guile nor violence can harm thee, in eternal safeguard there.
From the sword at noonday wasting, from the noisome pestilence,
In the depth of midnight blasting, God shall be thy sure defense:
He shall charge His angel legions watch and ward o’er thee to keep;
Tho’ thou walk thro’ lonesome regions, tho’ in desert wilds thou sleep.
Since with pure and firm affection, thou on God hast set thy love,
With the wings of His protection He will shield thee from above:
Thou shalt call on Him in trouble, He will hearken, He will save;
Here for grief reward thee double, crown with life beyond the grave.
Prayer: Lord, Speak …thy servant listens. Guide me as I rise up again. Amen

Blessed Assurance
Gen 46:4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. 5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
The sons of Jacob have assured him, all is well. The wagons and goods and treasures brought as gifts for Jacob, hint that all will indeed be well and that it is safe to leave for Egypt. But there is a voice Jacob is still waiting for and that is the voice of God. At Beersheba, Jacob waits on God. Time and life has taught Jacob that all that glitters may not be gold. God must give His own blessed assurance … and the merciful God speaks.
Jacob is reassured that God will be with him and the family will be preserved in Egypt. Jacob knows that God is the one at work and not Pharaoh. We need to wait on God and recognize His voice as He gives His blessed assurance. There are times when God speaks to warn us against the direction we feel convinced to take. The fact that the evidence shows all is well is not indicator that the direction is right. God who sees the future must confirm our journeys so we do not drift into errors or worse go alone without His defending presence.
Reflect on the words of the text and the importance of hearing God for yourself on the things that concern you and may God help you to know Him. God will speak and make it clear to you when He knows you are truly waiting on Him and not just seeking to validate your already decided proposal of action. What will you do if God gives you an instruction contrary to your plans? Will you set your plans aside and obey God?
Song.
Blessèd assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior, all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above – Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest – I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
Prayer: Lord, Speak …thy servant listens. Guide me as I rise up again. Amen

I am God
Gen 46:2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. 46:3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
I pray that God reintroduces Himself to you. It is an awesome thing, to hear I am God … to realize that God is incomparable to any and not limited by time, space or location. God called the doubting nature, the scheming nature trying to return … Jacob. He reminds Jacob. I am God and not you. I am God who told you not to go down at any time to Egypt …but I now tell you that in Egypt I will make you – there – a great nation.
Ponder on these words and you will see the dangers on dwelling on past encounters and promises. The worst situations we fall into is to stop hearing God. God has too many different ways of progressing His agenda. Do not ever fall into the trap of thinking you know it all, or have heard it all. We are only as good as the assurance and leading we received yesterday … we need to continually hear God … especially at new beginnings. Israel is wise to fear entering Egypt without hearing from God. God comes to assure him that He is the same God that was faithful to his ancestors.
It is foolish not to fear the power of evil and to tread carelessly where you have been asked not to go simply because a door opens. It is even more reckless to dare go without clearly hearing the “fear not” of God.
God is telling someone “I am God” and not a man … I can make a way where there is no way … even in the wilderness, I am supreme … I am God, and do not fear. It is in the place where you least expect that I will bless you. Praise God from whom all blessings flow and who is unstoppable to do all He purposes in any time, location or situation notwithstanding the witchcraft and opposition. Check again with God …He has a fresh word for you.
Song.
All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.
Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell; Come ye before Him and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; Without our aid He did us make;
We are His folk, He doth us feed, And for His sheep He doth us take.
O enter then His gates with praise; Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His Name always, For it is seemly so to do.
For why? the Lord our God is good; His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.
To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, The God Whom Heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures there below
Praise Him above ye Heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Prayer: Lord, May your great name be forever praised. Amen

Begin again with God
Gen 46:1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
As you begin a journey, there are many things we include on our checklist. The excited Israel would not want to ensure he did not forget anything as chances were that they would not be returning … not very soon.
But Israel does not forget God. It is easy to forget God when things are upbeat and seem to be working right, but God watches us closely for our first moves … the hordes of hell are also interested in new beginnings and ready to target the most wicked temptations to scuttle any real progress. I also notice the name Israel is used and no more Jacob. This is the new covenant name. Our progress into new things also must leave behind old identities. We must learn to start afresh with God to commit all in His hands. Israel offered sacrifices, bringing offerings and burning them on the altar. We are living sacrifices and there are times when we should go to God afresh … putting our lives afresh on the altar of God. We should tell God that indeed He is God and we are just His creation …to use us as He wills. Sacrifice represents an expensive gift … our lives being the most important offering of all.
Why is it important to start in times of new beginnings with communion with God? Because new beginnings involve new apprehensions, new devils, new encounters, new troubles and new challenges … and we need the assurance of God. The place chosen for the sacrifice was Beersheba. God appoints the sacrifice and the place. As you read this devotional … are you at the verge of a new beginning ? If so, then find the location and time to quickly go to God in communion. Surrender your life completely to Him and His agenda. Let God know by your sacrifice that He is in control and the future of all that pertains to you is safe in his hands. Praise Him, worship Him ..declare His majesty and greatness. Worshipping God is another way to present a pleasing sacrifice. Sing hymns of praise to Him.
Song.
Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;
To His feet thy tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King.
Praise Him for His grace and favor
To our fathers in distress.
Praise Him still the same as ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Glorious in His faithfulness.
Fatherlike He tends and spares us;
Well our feeble frame He knows.
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Widely yet His mercy flows.
Prayer: Lord, May your grace and truth that you reign forever, be sufficient at all times for me. Especially when I should be greatly disappointed. Amen

It is Enough
Gen 45:28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die
There are times you feel as though more needs to be done either for good or for bad. You want to reward and encourage someone or you feel additional reprimand or a stern reaction is called for. And then you realize … it is enough. Jacob discovered two main things – first that Joseph is alive and then the wickedness of his children must have shocked him. This could also have been so disappointing to Jacob. I would have expected some reaction or comment concerning the hatred that caused him so much pain.
Perhaps he remembered how he treated Joseph so specially and how that may have provoked much jealousy. I also remember a story I heard, of a man in a town known for being very hard and tough. This man arrives one day to discover that his home had been robbed, his wife killed and his only daughter severely wounded by the robbers weapons. The entire village expected trouble but the man simply said “It is enough that my daughter is alive”… the neighbors who knew this man well were shocked as the man confessed, that many years ago in his teens – he was in a gang that violently attacked many homes.
Jacob said “it is enough” as he heard again the loud cries of Esau his cheated brother and the sorrow of Isaac his father who he deceived into releasing the blessing. Jacob saw that he had only reaped the seed he had sown in a previous era. The Apostle Paul before he became a Christian, was putting Christians in prison eventually to find himself frequenting prisons all through his ministry. There are times we come face to face with the harvest of past seeds that God in His wisdom, insists that we harvest. Even in these His grace will be enough. At those times we should remember to be quiet and to say … “it is enough that Jesus died and that he died for me …and that He lives and reigns forever that I may reign with Him”.
For Jacob, it was enough that Joseph had been miraculously preserved for their posterity. It was easy for Jacob to release the past and move forward. Putting the past behind is important. Look forward.
Song.
My faith has found a resting place, not in device or creed;
I trust the ever living One, His wounds for me shall plead.
I need no other argument, I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
Enough for me that Jesus saves, This ends my fear and doubt;
A sinful soul I come to Him, He’ll never cast me out.
My heart is leaning on the Word, The living Word of God,
Salvation by my Savior’s Name, Salvation through His blood.
Prayer: Lord, May your grace and the truth that you reign forever, be sufficient for me … especially when I should be greatly disappointed. Amen

God shows Evidence
Gen 45:27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived.
For there to be revival there must be evidence of the unstoppable moves of God and not just words and pleadings. Sermons are great, but evidence of the mighty presence of God is better. The skills and talents of men may be persuasive but that is not evidence that can revive a man whose heart is already fainting. Words can be shared but there are things we must see.
I am praying that as you read this devotional you will be given a sign that will encourage you to believe that God has truly gone ahead to help you. If you are in ministry I pray that signs will follow your work and you will witness the move of God in ways that are truly remarkable.
In the Acts of Apostles, we read for the first time that handkerchiefs were brought from Paul and many were healed by God working through these handkerchiefs. God did a new thing and the people saw it and were revived. God will revive your ministry, your congregation, your neighborhood, your family and your nation. This time it will not just be words as good and important as preaching is, but it will be by visual evidence of the omnipotence of the great God that we serve.
I prophesy to the life of a reader, you will be so amazed for good … your amazement will heal all your depressions and you will be revived – launched into a new and great beginning. This day was a day never to be forgotten by Jacob. God has appointed certain days when things are completely changed for our good. May your day of joy come and soon. You will not just hear but will see.
Song.
O happy day, that fixed my choice on Thee, my Savior and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice, and tell its raptures all abroad.
Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away!
He taught me how to watch and pray, and live rejoicing every day
Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away.
O happy bond, that seals my vows to Him Who merits all my love!
Let cheerful anthems fill His house, while to that sacred shrine I move.
’Tis done: the great transaction’s done! I am the Lord’s and He is mine;
He drew me, and I followed on; Charmed to confess the voice divine.
Now rest, my long divided heart, fixed on this blissful center, rest.
Here have I found a nobler part; here Heavenly pleasures fill my breast.
High Heaven, that heard the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear,
Till in life’s latest hour I bow and bless in death a bond so dear.
Prayer: Lord, Make it clear beyond all doubts that I belong to you and you alone. Amen
