The Steward of His House ( Part 1)

Gen 44:1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

There is a principle of Stewardship concerning the assets of God. Stewards execute the agenda of God for God the owner. This suggests that God is interested in things others overlook as insignificant or as the accountant would say “immaterial”. He wants us to be faithful in a few things.

Luke 16:10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.

Someone who will divert $10 will if given the right opportunity steal $10 million. How we handle little amounts is very important to God and tells us what we will do in larger scenarios. We learn by starting with managing small units. God gives according to abilities. This implies He expects us to do only what He has uniquely enabled and gifted us to do and not everything. This suggests that the ways of focus and divine specialization lend to more Godliness and faithfulness rather than broad finger-in-every-pie approaches. Every steward has some competitive advantage to trade and which he must find and leverage for increase. Increase can be partly invested to enhance competitive strength – this is self-development.

Competitive strength refers to what we can do better than someone else and this can be increased as we leverage technology, resources, skills and more research. Competitive strength can decay to nothing if not well applied or developed. Operating out of divinely given advantage is wastage as someone can and should be making better use of the resources in your hands in that area. This is well understood if not obvious in agrarian mindsets for the farmer will never plant seeds suited for temperate conditions in the tropics. Nor will the farmer embark on a large scale field until he has mastered the crop in a more manageable scale.

Before the oil boom in many developing countries, agriculture boomed and distinct competences developed. These competencies and skill advantages faded as oil wealth brought the prospect of accelerated prosperity in the cities where trading and supplies in a rich and corrupt environment were seen to be more lucrative. Skills and technology for oil production were imported and the nations remained poor.

Nations like Brazil succeeded in the oil sector in impacting local wealth and value as opposed to other developing countries because they nurtured small local enterprise as suppliers to the industry who later grew to be sizable companies. They encouraged bio-fuels thus rewarding small local farmers specialized in farming the local terrain. In addition, they did not favor international oil giants and imported technology. Soon they had mastered local technologies suited to their own oil fields and began to export expertise. Success in mobilizing small local enterprise and nurturing them to grow only as they become better (not better connected) is God’s path. This does not mean God is against growth and size – only that competitive and sustainable growth must be progressively earned and not suddenly blossom through clever dealing and opportunist positioning.

Song.

Jehovah Jireh my provider …His grace is sufficient for me

The Lord will supply all my need … according to His riches in glory

He will give His angels charge over me … His grace is sufficient for me.

Prayer: Lord, Bless me …O Bless me indeed even as you help me to be your faithful steward. Amen

God has Favorites

Gen 43:33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

As we study the word of God, we discover more and more that God has favorites. Somehow we always find some characters in the Bible that seem to enjoy a different largesse and provision. The many that are called will often wonder at the few that are chosen. Benjamin is the least … low in the hierarchy and seated farthest from the head of the table. The Jewish society did everything based on a hierarchy … but God will often go to the low and sometimes the very least and raise as the head. The neglected can become the celebrated.

In this devotional, do not despair at how low you have had to descend and the position that has humbled you. It is only a set up by God to be able to raise you up in His blessings. He that is low is lifted. Jesus was brought down to be a man and even further to the depths of the grave only to be raised up over all of creation – in Heaven and on earth. The favorites of God have received help to be humble and lowly … like the lowly Jesus Himself.

They drank and were merry with Benjamin. They were not jealous nor did they wonder that Benjamin had five times as much as they had. The old character of the brothers would have been envious … God had transformed even the wicked brother’s hearts. Do not despair or write brethren off – you may not know His own … for He will remove the heart of stone from His own and replace with a heart of flesh and call them to go up higher…and this after you have written them off.

Song.

Jesus is calling – give Him your heart – Leave the past ways behind

He breaks the chains – soothes the pain – and says “Go up Higher”

Chorus

Friend … Go up higher – Honor awaits you now

He that is low – is lifted up – So friend – Go up Higher and Higher

friend – Go up higher.

Worship the Lord – wait on His word – Please Him in all your ways

Give Him your all to hear Him call – you Friend “Go up Higher”

There is not a friend like the lowly Jesus – Not a friend like Him

Wonder of wonders – how can it be – That He died for me

He died but He rose – He conquered death

Now He lives enthroned – My Savior my King is coming again – to say “Friend Go up higher”

Prayer: Lord, I need more grace to humble myself and receive that brokenness – to be one of your favorites.. Amen.

God of Order

Gen 43:31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

God loves order. The Hebrew brethren are seated according to their seniority … the eldest according to His birthright and the youngest according to His youth. 1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

There is a preference for informality that comes at the expense of order in worship. The brothers marveled at the order because this is a Hebrew tradition and must have wondered how Joseph knew of it. Decency and order which respects elders are good and important traditions. Decency can be lost in our comportment … order requires planning and diligence. All things are to be done decently … there are no exceptions. Consider every aspect of all that you do. Ask God to teach you His decency … this does not mean we are not to rejoice or dance ecstatically for our deliverance…but by His Spirit we can still learn of decency and order and how to reflect this not just in Church but in all we do.

Song.

All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.

Each little flow’r that opens,

Each little bird that sings,

He made their glowing colors,

He made their tiny wings.

The purple-headed mountain,

The river running by,

The sunset, and the morning

That brightens up the sky.

The cold wind in the winter,

The pleasant summer sun,

The ripe fruits in the garden,

He made them ev’ry one:

Prayer: Lord, teach me your order … let me learn of your decency. Amen

An Unusual Banquet

Gen 43:31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

Joseph hosts an unusual banquet with arrangements made for three different sections. One setting for Joseph , another for his brothers and a third for the Egyptians. Meditate on this unusual arrangement and you will find some lessons on how we live in the present dispensation.

The children of Israel could not be accepted, yet their brother was lord over the Egyptians. In a similar fashion, Christians are considered abomination to many but Jesus is still Lord of all – whether they are His or not. Also in this text we see the pattern of no meeting point between darkness and light, and why our Lord urges us to be separate, distinct, sanctified … and set apart.

But there is again the separation between us and our Lord Jesus. Though we are His, our knowledge of Him can only be still in part until the appointed time. This should create a longing and a desire for us to want to know Him. Paul had this desire when he said in Philippians…

Php 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death….

The brothers did not know it was Joseph their brother they had betrayed. They did not know what it means to suffer in prisons and pits for years. They did not know the power that can bring out of the pit. If they knew, their lives would have been transformed. When they eventually know their appreciation of God would completely change.

A good question to meditate on is to ask yourself. What knowledge are you seeking? Knowledge on earthy matters is very useful but is very different from seeking to knowing God. Understanding our traditions is very different from the fellowship of suffering which is to express love and communion with God and saints by voluntarily bearing painful inconveniences. To know the power of men and the great things men can do is also very different from understanding the power of God to raise back that which is dead, decomposed and has become dried up bones in a desolate valley. Ask God for revelation at a higher level. There is more to God than simply answering our prayers concerning our needs. God does the impossible, reverses the irreversible and is in a separate class to Himself in His wonders. Joseph sits in a separate class as well.

Song.

I just want to be where you are – Dwelling daily in your presence

I don’t want to worship from afar -Draw me near to where you are.

I just want to be where you are – In your dwelling place forever

Take me to the place where you are – Cause I just want to be with you.

Chorus:

I want to be where you are – Dwelling in your presence,

Feasting at your table, Surrounded by your glory

In your presence. That’s where I always want to be, I just want to be, I just want to be with you

Prayer: Lord, I do not want to remain apart from you. Take me higher to where you are. Amen

The Tears of Joseph

Gen 43:27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? 28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. 30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

Why does Joseph weep? Was he ever tempted to deny his own brothers? Did he feel any need for revenge? We do not know but we do know these are normal human reactions. Joseph had nothing to gain it seemed from the tribe of Israel and could easily have pretended that he did not know them. But Joseph felt their pains. One can discern from the answers of his brothers that they were desperate, afraid and panicked. It was not clear what would happen to them. They did not even feel covered by the God they had betrayed in getting rid of their brother and lying to their father. God is able to make every dream He gives come true …no matter how unlikely or improbable. The brothers were crying inside and Joseph could feel their sorrow, their pains and fears. The fact that he had the power to restore their situation did not stop him feeling their anguish. Others in the palace did not cry because there was no connection to this untidy rabble in the Royal Palace.

Do also remember that Jesus was similarly overcome with sorrow and wept when called to the tomb of Lazarus …even though He knew He had power over death. Brothers feel for each other. When a brother in the body weeps, the other must also feel the hurt. We are indeed a family and the pains of Christians in North Korea or other denominations should touch us. The tears of Joseph were not selfish tears. We are not told even once that Joseph cried in the pit or during his trials. “Jesus wept” comes up only once at the tomb of Lazarus and nowhere else…no doubt the inner cries can be even deeper than the shedding of tears. Our God sees all our pains and feels all our struggles. As our brother, He is touched by all our weaknesses and is more anxious to see us restored than we can ever imagine.

It is not unlikely that at least one of the brothers of Joseph … maybe Benjamin was so frightened and that fear did not permit the tears of sorrow to rush down his cheeks. What can we learn? First Christ feels all the pains you go through and sees all the needless burdens we refuse to bring to Him and this causes Him more sorrow. The restoration of a brother is of importance as Christ feels for the brother in the pit of shame and confusion. Brethren – living in bondage does not make Christ happy … and he who works to lift the veil of sorrow and bitterness by extending help and the gospel is a rare gem. The gospel of Christ is good news …go and spread it. Do the work of wiping sorrow from the face of others. Christ will reward you well.

Song.

Take my hands, and let them move

At the impulse of Thy love

Take my feet, and let them be

Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Prayer: Lord, be forever magnified in our worship. Let every living soul praise you for ever and ever. Amen.

Heavenly Worship

Gen 43:26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

Our worship tells us whether we are citizens of Heaven or not. Worship is not performance, but the work of the Spirit of God having its way in our lives as we yield to Him. We worship according to the truth and revelation of God. Heavenly worship involves the presence of the Most High God.

Psalm 22:3 says “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” In 2 Chronicles 5:11-14, when the Israelites worshipped God in one accord, singing of the mercy of God that endureth forever, the presence of God was manifested to the extent that the glory of God filled the temple of the house of God. This will be your experience. Heavenly worship opens the Heavens even for others to benefit, releasing freedom from bondage and giving victory over incredible opposition.

In Acts16:25-26, Paul and Silas were in prison and as they rendered praises, God paid them a visit and they and other prisoners were free. King Jehoshaphat through worship was also victorious over major opposition as recorded in 2 Chronicles 20:20-25.

Heavenly worship releases the grace of genuine repentance and conviction which paves the way for true salvation. In Acts 16:27-34, the keeper of the prison was saved and his household. A grace released after Paul and Silas worshipped. In Revelation 1:10 John said he was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day …

Heavenly worship experiences begin with the Heavens opening and divine visitation i.e. the Holy Ghost the presence of God descending and filling us afresh. We are freshly anointed and empowered and so direct our expressions and talents to the glory of God who sits on the throne and unto the Lamb of God forever and ever. The Heavens are very selective and open only to genuine citizens of Heaven.

Again, I urge all to begin by ensuring their passport is genuine.

Song.

No more night No more pain No more tears never crying again

Praises to the great I am. We will live in the light of the risen Lamb.

Prayer: Lord, may I never lose my citizenship in your Heaven. Amen

Joseph’s Home

Gen 43:26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

Earthly monarchs are known to be given the highest levels of worship. Those who must come before them do not go empty-handed … they come with gifts and presents. They come in uncertainty that they will be received and bow to the earth … all this for a king with a time limit to reign and even if he reigns all his life, that life is limited … even powers and ability to favor are also limited. Joseph’s home can be seen as a shadow of our Heavenly home.

How do we come before the limitless God. David comes humbly before Him, remembering that He is our Maker. Ps. 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.

Only with a humble attitude will we offer true worship unto God realizing His greatness and holiness, and our own insignificance and sinfulness. As we appear before the gates of the temple of God, we must be prepared to bow down and kneel in the worship of the Lord. The reason for this is that the Lord alone is God, a mighty God, and a great King, and the whole universe lies under His control. What prevails in some sanctuaries today insults God as regards His worship. People participate with enthusiasm in worship service while hearts are very far away from God in daily living. Worship is flippant.

Can you imagine situations whereby someone has the rare privilege to be in the presence of God in worship and runs out to answer a phone call from someone of a mortal body – even if from a close relative or related to an urgent issue? How do you expect God to honor that kind of worship? Yet this continues in Church services today. This could explain why there is limited or no impact as can be expected from the manifest presence of the Most High. Indeed, most are only present physically but their hearts remain very far from God. Informality and careless familiarity has combined to create an atmosphere that ridicules the reality that God is supreme and above all.

How much you know about God will determine the kind of glory that you will give Him and the honor you will ascribe to His Holy Name. Do not come before the presence of God empty handed. The very first offering God expected from you is by presenting yourself as a living sacrifice, Holy, acceptable unto God…

Rom. 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Indeed, we often call people to sing praises and songs unto God and this invitation has made many people from all works of life to be engaged in singing new songs unto God in response to that call and invitation. However, people turn the praises and worship of God to a circus whereas Jesus has given vital clues in His word to recognizing true worship, the heart desire of God.

Song.

All creatures of our God and King -Lift up your voice and with us sing Al-le-lu-jah, Al-lelu-jah!

Thou burning sun with soft-er gleam; O praise Him, O praise Him; Al-lelujah; Al-le-lujah; Al-le-lu-jah;

Thou rush-ing wind that art so strong – Ye clouds that sail in heav’n a-long O praise Him! Alleluia!

Thou ri-sing morn, in praise re-joice Ye-lights of eve-nings, find a voice, O praise Him! O praise Him

Prayer: Lord, Help me to prepare my heart to come before your presence and worship always in Spirit and in Truth. Amen

Is your Focus Right?

Gen 43:25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

As the brothers got ready to meet with Joseph, we read that they made ready their presents. It is a good tradition to go before men of honor with gifts. Visitors do not normally approach Kings empty handed. Our offerings to the King of kings should reflect the great honor we accord to our God. But in this story, there is a different dimension in that they did not know Joseph was their brother. This was a very material fact that made them focus on how to win the acceptance and favor of Joseph, who was already set to favor them. Ignorance affects our attitude.

There are still many today trying to please God with things, performances and service. Many have focused on what money can buy and have pledged to do impressive things for the Lord. This is all commendable, but is not the best we can be for God. God is not so impressed with our gifts as He is excited about us. We should focus on our lives, and the lives of others to make them sanctuaries that please the most high to dwell in. If they knew this was their brother and that he had forgiven them, they would have prepared their hearts to meet him, to be pleasing to him who they had ill-treated.

We tend to focus on the material but God is focused on us. What impresses men tends to be of silver and gold … what pleases God is faith that He is our father who sent His son, our Lord Jesus Christ as our senior brother … the second Adam to die and be raised that we may be ever saved. Without this faith, it is impossible to please God. Our faith therefore looks up to Christ, the Lamb of Calvary.

Faith is the most attacked and underestimated of virtues. Because all power belongs to God and Satan has no power to defeat us, he tricks and discourages us with wiles to erode faith. When we have no faith, we will soon search for other ways to please God only to embark on futile journeys. We then become discouraged and become vulnerable to Satan’s deceptions. Lord increase our faith. Faith comes by hearing – therefore ensure you are constantly exposed to expository teachings of God’s word. The measure of your faith is linked to the word you regularly receive.

Song.

My faith looks up to thee,

thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine!

Now hear me while I pray,

take all my guilt away,

O let me from this day

be wholly thine!

May thy rich grace impart

strength to my fainting heart,

my zeal inspire!

As thou hast died for me,

O may my love to thee

pure, warm, and changeless be,

a living fire!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Help me to prepare my heart to be pure and faithful always pleasing to my Savior. Amen

The Journey Home

Gen 43:24 And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

In this text, we see several characters and elements with much significance. We see the man that brings, which I had earlier said was representative of the Holy Spirit that must guide His own to eternity. It will never be by our understanding, no matter how sanctified that understanding may be. We are told never to lean on it. Then we see the water that cleanses representing the blood of Jesus, the cleansing fluid ever so potent to wash away our sins and bring us clean before God.

But there are other dimensions, the man led them on a journey home. Which journey are we on? Do we have a direction to our lives and is this direction to Heaven. The feet represent the hunger and the zeal to please God, the readiness and equipment to move in the direction that we are led. Many are too lazy or appear paralyzed and refuse to move … lack of zeal can be the undoing of many. This devotional reminds us that God is a Holy God and all who come to him must be Holy. One of the assignments of the Holy Spirit is to take us through a journey of sanctification – getting rid of sinful weights.

You can examine your life and see if you are on a path as has been described. What is your focus? Is it Heaven or something else? Do we trust and love Jesus as our Savior? Do you have a sense of the dirt that is on your feet – sin …that must be cleansed and stopped …or do you not care for your sanctification? Do you sense the zeal of the Lord of Hosts telling you there is little time and you must do all you can quickly as you have been led to do … or are you still always procrastinating?

Many will cry in Heaven when they see the opportunities lost and frittered in vanity. We will wish we had been more zealous for the things of God, wish we had been more careful with sin and shunned more the world … we will wish we had not permitted our lives to be distracted by the many toys competing with God’s assignment in our lives.

Ponder over these and make sure you are not on your own. When God says “leave him alone” in frustration, then one has entered already into the trap of Satan. If you are not on the journey to the home prepared by Christ and escorted by the Holy Spirit, then you are on the road to a horrible damnation. You can get back on track as you receive grace to repent.

Song.

Lord, we are hungry for blessing,

This is in tune with Thy Word;

Now as our need we’re confessing,

Give us new hearts, cleansed and stirred.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, give us new hearts, cleansed and stirred to follow you till we reach our Heavenly home. Amen

Peace be to You

Gen 43:19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house, 20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks. 23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

Be comforted and may the peace of God be with you. Joseph only speaks peace to you … why are you so worried? What do you have to fear? But they cannot receive this peace because they do not know who the giver is – of what value is a word of peace from an Egyptian officer. The one who does not know you and what you have been through, your guilt and your fears cannot promise you peace.

But it is Jesus who promises you – dear reader … peace. You will not be destroyed nor will you end badly … Receive the peace of Christ even though it passes understanding. It is a peace that the world cannot give nor can it be taken away. Receive the peace of Christ for you have found favor in the eyes of your God. Remember this is not the peace of men nor is it the peace of the world. This is the peace of God … the Prince of Peace offers you a sure peace … receive that sure peace … even as Simeon appears. Let His peace banish all your fears … you will sing for joy and will rediscover laughter and dancing … just wait on Him. Meanwhile hold on to His peace … soon it will be clear that your maker is your Husband … the Lord of Hosts is His name. He has forgiven and will restore you fully.

Song.

He is my peace He has broken down every wall

He is my peace He is my peace.

He is my peace He has broken down every wall

He is my peace He is my peace

Cast all your cares on Him

For He cares for you

He is my peace He is my peace 2ce.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Move and make my life at peace again …. Amen
