Pleasing God
Gen 43:11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
What would compare to the joy of Joseph seeing his brethren and his father. He already has the best balms, spices and choicest fruits of Egypt. Joseph misses His own and not their assets or what they have. In similar fashion, Christ wants our soul. He misses our company and desires our love and presence. He has no need of our service, offerings or even our sacrifices. His greatest joy is when we are given to Him. Many do not have time to make available for Jesus, in devotion. They hurriedly bring things to the altar and wonder why the meetings are so long. They want to go back to their other pursuits. Jesus wants them and not what they can bring. His greatest joy is in our surrendered life and time and not in what we do for Him. Does he derive pleasure in our offerings and sacrifices when he discerns we do not know that He is our brother who wants to be reunited with us.
We seek to please God and that is good … but what gives Him greatest delight … is the love that He observes in our heart for Him that provokes our obedience.
1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
The brothers gave as though they were giving to a strange king, there was nothing in their heart … only a fear that they would be treated unkindly. Many come to God like this …with many gifts. But God wants us to know Him first before we give to Him. We then see that we need not give to bribe Him for He has already freely given us His best … His own life He gave when we hated Him … what will He not freely now give us.
Friend, keep your gift for now and get to know that your God is your friend, your brother …Christ , and you will one day be joint-heirs with Him. Perhaps your obedience will be different if you knew Him more … perhaps your giving will be more joyful and sacrificial and painless … if you truly knew Him to whom you give. Give Him whom you know and love as the Savior, who died for the salvation of your soul … your brother crucified for your sins. Now … consider … is anything too much to be offered to Him.
Song.
What shall we offer our good Lord, Poor nothings! for His boundless grace!
Fain would we His great Name record, And worthily set forth His praise.
Great object of our growing love, To Whom our more than all we owe,
Open the fountain from above, And let it our full souls o’erflow.
So shall our lives Thy power proclaim, Thy grace for every sinner free;
Till all mankind shall learn Thy Name, Shall all stretch out their hands to Thee.
Prayer: O Lord, preserve me from vain offerings … teach me instead to know and please you. Amen

Delays are Costly
Gen 43:10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.
Delays are often costly. Our giving and release is best when it is immediate and not compelled by circumstances. The Bible does not tell us how long they lingered, but we know the famine became worse. So many other things lingered. Fears and anxieties in the famine lingered. The imprisonment of Simeon lingered. The mourning for Joseph lingered. There are many reasons we give for delays in obedience to God. The most common helper of our delays is our flesh. When we perceive disadvantage we prefer to stay our action. But time passes and God keeps our breakthroughs awaiting in mercy of our obedience.
Another manifestation of delay we see when Rebekah lingers in following the servant of Abraham to meet her bridegroom. We know that this delay is external for Laban and the household contrive all means to keep Rebekah from going.
Gen 24:56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master
There are hindrances from the devil. Indeed God must conceal His plans so well that the devil is unaware and helps even to accelerate it. If the devil knew better, He would have hindered the arrest and crucifixion of Christ … but he facilitated it, instead. Paul was hindered several times in ministry.
1Th 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
What the flesh, Satan, and his agents … some in your family plan to hinder the most is our coming to Jesus in repentance. He knows Christ is coming soon and when the trumpet sounds, it will be too late for any repentance. Do not permit anything to delay your return to Christ for you do not know when Christ will return and it will be over.
Do not delay the freedom of your brothers languishing in the prison of sin. Go and tell the good news. Do not linger at giving God praises for the Lord arises in the praises of His children and His enemies scatter. When we linger to praise God, so much unnecessary havoc persists. Now is the time to go to Jesus … Now is the time to obey Him … do not wait another moment. Praise Him Now.
Song.
My God, how wonderful Thou art, Thy majesty, how bright;
How beautiful Thy mercy seat In depths of burning light!
How dread are Thy eternal years,O everlasting Lord,
By prostrate spirits day and night Incessantly adored!
How wonderful, how beautiful,The sight of Thee must be;
Thy endless wisdom, boundless power, And glorious purity!
Father of Jesus, love’s Reward! What rapture it will be
Prostrate before Thy throne to lie, And gaze, and gaze on Thee!
Prayer: O Lord, Let nothing be able to hinder me from worshipping and serving you. Amen

Our Surety the Lion
Gen 43:8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. 9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:
Joseph was already given for them. He went through pits, prison and slavery and came out for them. There is no need for Benjamin to do the same. God will not need another sacrifice for sin after Christ. Christ has already paid it all. This is a different sacrifice. When we come as a living sacrifice offering sacrifices of praise, obedience and joy, we do so because we love God. We are filled with the love of God and will do anything for Him. We will keep ourselves for Him who first loved us. When we obey His commandments we do so out of love, for how can we say we love Him if we do not want to please Him.
There is no other sacrifice for sin. Benjamin will not go the same path as Joseph. Judah promises to watch over Benjamin. I do not know what Judah can do … but the coming Lion of the Tribe of Judah is however a sure protection. He will watch over all our giving and gifts and our seed. By His Spirit, we will not end up giving and then sorrowing for losses. Instead, we will see His harvest.
Luk 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
The surety is the word of the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Do not despair. Indeed, everywhere you have given, you will reap a bountiful harvest. It does not matter what the evidence presents to you. You will not lose when you surrender anything to Jesus.
Did you read about the boy who brought his little lunch and placed it in the hands of the Lion of Judah? Did you read about the widow who surrendered her last meal to the Prophet. Jacob is forced to release a son and got back three sons (Benjamin, Simeon and Joseph) … and two more grandsons (Ephraim and Manasseh) through Joseph. The once considered barren – Hannah released Samuel and out of her womb came forth five others. God multiplies what we give. So give.
1Sa 2:21 And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
Your release will link you to a harvest you least expect. You can rely on the Lion of Judah. He is truly able to multiply the life given as a living sacrifice to be far more fulfilling than it could ever possibly have been. Do not grieve. Release that which you hold with joy.
Song.
What shall I render to my God,
For all His mercy’s store?
I’ll take the gifts He hath bestowed,
And humbly ask for more.
Prayer: O Lord, May all my giving be truly multiplied in your hands. Amen

That We May live
Gen 43:8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. 9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:
We shall not die but live. But there are things to be done to be spiritually alive. What has Jesus said we should do? Joseph asked them to bring Benjamin but they feared to do so … only to slowly die of hunger. Jesus has taught and asked for obedience on so many things. Jesus asked his disciples “do you love me … then feed my sheep” He said you are my friends if you do whatsoever I command you.
He asks us to pray even for our enemies and bless those who curse us. How many things have we been told to do that we have failed to do? But in not doing so we have suffered much until we went back to the original instruction. God will not change his instruction to us. Rather we will have to go and dig up what we have been told to do and simply do it – no matter how painful or dangerous it seems … that we may live. God uses the famine to ensure they do not forget Joseph’s instruction. I suspect they would have abandoned Simeon in Egypt for nothing will compel Jacob to release Benjamin.
There is an obedience to God in which you have failed that is holding up your breakthrough in life … why don’t you simply rediscover what it is … God is simply using your frustration to draw attention to that action that you need to do. Many have already started to picture your death – but they will only be proven wrong. God will give you more grace. As Israel eventually agrees to send Benjamin, you will be strengthened in the area of weakness and will live, you and your entire family will live. But for the sons of Israel, not without going to Joseph – a shadow of Christ. God bless you.
Song.
Under the burdens of guilt and care
Many a spirit is grieving,
Who in the joy of the Lord might share,
Life everlasting receiving.
Life, life, eternal life!
Jesus alone is the giver;
Life, life, abundant life!
Glory to Jesus forever!
Bearing our burden of guilt,
there came One who is strong to deliver;
Bringing to men, through His wondrous name,
Life “more abundant” than ever.
Burdened one, why will you longer bear
Sorrows from which He releases?
Open your heart and, rejoicing,
share Life “more abundant” in Jesus!
Prayer: O Lord Jesus, as we come to you, bless us with abundant life. Amen

Release your Burdens
Gen 43:6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? 7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
What is it that we would rather men did not know about? Knowing about these things will put us at a disadvantage. Perhaps an indiscretion, or a lie or something we have and do not want to release. Are you like the couple – Ananias and Sapphira who thought to lie to the Church. Many are like this, we suspect that if certain information is released it would lead to future loss of reputation or we may be asked to give more than we intend to give.
What an unfortunate conclusion … another self-deception. The most High knows all already. Did Joseph not know that they had another brother who was not with them? Does Jesus not know what you are keeping back from Him. He does and He asks you not because He does not know but because He does.
Did our maker not give all to us? Why is it so tough to surrender all to Him. Can He not give us again and again? He who gave us our very breath and created all … is it too much for Him to ask us to surrender all to Him. He said He made all for his pleasure not for ours. It pleased God to scar the soul of Jacob in demanding the release of Benjamin … but it was too small to ask for given what He had planned ahead … a pleasant surprise in Egypt.
Release all your burdens to Jesus. He is so real and so full of mercy. Jesus knows it all and has a solution in store in the future if only you will stop blaming circumstances and raking up your past. At the heart of inability to see the beautiful provisions for God is our past guilt. The devil loves to assail our joys with snippets of the past so we will not be able to enter into his merciful provisions and remain tied in bitter memories. Jacob has no expectation of any good from God because of his guilt. His sons likewise. Let go of the guilt. Release the past and enjoy new provisions ahead. It may not be clear to you how God will move. The famine may be more real than the comforts of Goshen, but still be assured that His word and promises will come to pass.
Also, God loves a joyful giver … may we have more grace to give our life and place everything totally in your hands. God will help you come out gloriously. Stand on His word. Stop blaming people … your sons, brothers or pastor … stop blaming yourself. Release the guilt. Soon it will be time for rejoicing. Release what He has asked of you … whatever is released to Christ is safe and ultimately returns blessed, increased and strengthened.
Song.
Were the whole realm of nature mine
It were an offering far too small.
Love so amazing so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Prayer: O Lord, That which I cherish the most, I give it to you. Help me to give joyfully and not grudgingly. Amen

Dealings of Israel
Gen 43:6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? 7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
Israel is confused. How is it that this stranger knows exactly how to question the brothers to focus on Benjamin. As far as Israel can perceive this is a plot and perhaps another engineered by his wicked sons. Israel has lived with the pain of watching his sons grow and observing the harvest of his life manifest in his children. The man of guile can only see more guile. Jacob may now be Israel but he knows the way of the trickster. The struggles for rights in a large polygamous home are not lost to him and Benjamin seems to be the next target.
Ask God to help you renew your mind to free your thoughts from demonic suspicions entrenched by years of unforgiveness and bitterness. But there is a worsening famine and the threat of death looms in the house of Israel. Israel descends further into wrong imaginations. At the heart of Israel’s confusion is the lie that God hates him and wants to destroy him. This is the greatest lie that the devil plants in the hearts of His children especially when they have fallen into sin. Unfortunately it is a lie that is not helped by many well-meaning counselors. Our enemy is sin and the devil and not people. God waits for us to return to Him and to put off wicked imaginations. Unfortunately Jacob afflicts himself and causes even more hurt on his family by delaying the release of Benjamin. I pray that God will help us to cast off every wrong imagination. Soon Israel will be relieved. Soon you will be dancing and singing new songs. God still loves you.
Song.
What the Lord has done for me I cannot tell it all
What the Lord has done for me – I cannot tell it all
What the Lord has done for me – I cannot tell it all
He saved me and washed me in His blood
So I can shout Hallelujah 3ce
I can shout – Praise the Lord 2ce
Jesus loves me, this I know,
Though my hair is white as snow.
Though my sight is growing dim,
Still He bids me trust in him.
Yes, Jesus loves me! 3ce
The Bible tells me so.
Though my steps are oh, so slow,
With my hand in his I’ll go.
On through life, let come what may,
He’ll be there to lead the way.
Prayer: O Lord, Be always there to lead and guide all my ways. Amen

The Narrow Way
Gen 43:2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. 3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food
After many days of careful rationing and austere meals, everything eventually finishes. I remember the story of the prodigal son. After, even the food of pigs became scarce – he eventually came to his senses, Indeed, returning to the will and purpose of God could be challenging and there could be loss of face, we may not be welcome and in some cases restitution will be costly. Judah speaks of the situation awaiting them in Egypt and the conditions that have been laid down.
Why does God place difficult conditions for our ultimate glorification? Why is it that the way to Heaven is narrow and few find and walk it? Why is it that Christianity in its truest form is also about painful sacrifices? A casual approach to God that costs us nothing is a fake experience. Christianity is not a tea party and that which costs nothing is worthless to us. But we say Christ has paid a price and he paid it all … very true … salvation cost God all. But how about us … will we value that which we are accustomed to taking so lightly … that which demanded nothing from us. Will we worship a God and appreciate the value a God we gave up nothing for.
God asks that we present what we cherish most … our bodies as a living sacrifice and be holy. He knows it is in our power to do so. But like Jacob, we have no intention to release the beloved Benjamin until the famine gets sore. I have encountered Christians with salvation experiences which seemed to be just God giving everything to them … they saw the need for no sacrifice, they protected their lives and sought to use God to obtain things. I doubt if this is real. When God puts us on the narrow way, we are living sacrifices and must lay all down and learn self-denial … crucifying the flesh, daily.
The pain of living a life set apart, consecrated and given totally to God … releasing all that we cherish to Him eventually becomes the bridge to a beautiful new beginning. You must thank God for the famines that force the right response. You love to sing I surrender all – but what about your Benjamin?
Song.
All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.
All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me Jesus, take me now.
I surrender all 2ce
All to thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
Prayer: O Lord, Let my life be all surrendered to you. Nothing held back. Amen

God works all for our Good.
Gen 43:1 And the famine was sore in the land.
Things went from bad to worse until they become really terrible. How are things with you? Have they gone from bad to worse, and have you decided to just give up completely. Have you considered there is a decision that God wants you to make? Is there something you should do still undone? Is God trying to provoke an action from you. Why are you facing a deteriorating situation? What is the root cause?
In this case, it appears the famine is sore to force Jacob to revisit his earlier decision not to release Benjamin. God has planned that the family will be restored and united in Egypt, but Jacob does not know this. God needs a scenario to force Jacob to rethink his earlier decision. What is it that you consider to be evil and hard, but God permits only so that the expected end will be realized for your greater good. Indeed, the ways of God are past finding, they will remain mysteries in God’s workshop to which no human mind is admitted.
But we have the word of God that declares that all things will work together for the good of the righteous who truly love God. Our righteousness is given and not earned. Jacob and his sons are seen as righteous because of Joseph – who paid the price for their righteousness. Jacob comes to the wrong conclusions that God is punishing him and has abandoned him. But he fails to see that God has not. Rather God was putting final touches to their restoration.
Every day of hunger in the tent of Jacob was of needless pain. Are you suffering unnecessarily for that which you need not suffer for. Is your delay in aligning with the will of God causing more pain and risk to others and especially yourself.
Do not despair. Have faith in God. The famine is to connect you to the new phase you so desperately need to put the sadness of the past, completely behind. The famine is sore … but for your good.
Song.
Though we pass through tribulation, All will be well
Ours is such a full salvation, All, all is well.
Happy still in God confiding;
Fruitful if in Christ abiding;
Holy through the Spirit’s guiding;
All must be well.
On our Father’s love relying,
Jesus every need supplying,
Or in living or in dying,
All must be well.
Prayer: O Lord, Let me sing a new song that says … I never knew all was indeed well by His grace. Amen

Far from the Grave
Gen 42:38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
Have you recently been having thoughts of death? Do you contemplate suicide? Do you think you are soon to descend to the grave? Let me tell you. You are far from the grave. There are still many good years ahead of you that you are unaware of. You have work to do. Joseph must be blessed … Ephraim is going to be blessed … Manasseh will be blessed. You must pronounce blessings on all your children … they are all going to father great tribes. All this does not seem to be possible … he has no interest to bless any of his children knowing Joseph is dead. But all this must still change. Jacob cannot die yet. You cannot die yet because your story is only midway. You cannot go to the grave because destiny still needs your contribution at a future appointed date. There is a role God has preserved for you. You are far from the grave … do not permit strange thoughts of death to confuse you. You will still live to declare great testimonies of the truths in the word of the Lord. You cannot die. Not now.
Your appointment with the grave will not be escorted by sorrow but the joy of completing a glorious destiny in Christ. Perish the thought of death dear reader … instead God is about to start something new and fresh in your life. Wait patiently for it.
Song.
Ho, reapers in the whitened harvest!
Oft feeble, faint, and few;
Come, wait upon the blessed Master,
Our strength He will renew.
Refrain:
For “They that wait upon the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings,
They shall mount up with wings as eagles:
They shall run and not be weary;
They shall walk and not faint;
They shall run and not be weary;
They shall walk and not faint;
They shall run and not be weary,
shall walk and not faint.”
Too oft a-weary and discouraged,
We pour a sad complaint;
Believing in a living Savior,
Why should we ever faint?
Rejoice! for He is with us always,
Lo, even to the end!
Look up! take courage and go forward.
All needed grace He’ll send!
Prayer: O Lord, renew my strength for the new thing you are beginning. Amen

Arrest Wrong Conclusions
Gen 42:38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave..
Sincerity can still be very alien to truth. Jacob voices the feelings that are not backed up with reality. He is ignorant and so confused. Our dreams are not dead neither are we left alone. None reading this devotional will go to the grave with sorrow.
Mat 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Giving away your son is a fearful proposition. Who can pass such a test? But whatever we give away that is ours will come back to us … as all are safe in the hands of the keeper of Israel. We must not cling to blessings as though we were the sources of them. The one that gives may want to borrow them for a while from us. Jacob had no cause to grieve … both his two sons were safe.
It is vain for saints to grieve for losses – even before they have manifested. Our projections are negative. My question is that where is your faith. The Bible says the just shall live by faith. Our faith must be tried and found to be true so we can build on it and not on our perceptions. If circumstances have imposed certain challenges that seem to have scattered your home … I encourage you to trust God, you will be reunited with your sons and daughters again. The plan of God is a good plan … the end He is working out is a good end. Jacob is at his lowest but does the Bible not say – even from the dunghill He raises up. God has not forgotten you. Release what you must and look up to God. Soon the beautiful plans of the most High will be revealed and you will only marvel at His benevolence and most kind hand coated in bitter pills.
Song.
Be not dismayed whate’er betide, God will take care of you!
Beneath His wings of love abide, God will take care of you!
God will take care of you, Through every day o’er all the way;
He will take care of you; God will take care of you!
Through days of toil when heart doth fail, God will take care of you!
When dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you!
All you may need He will provide, God will take care of you!
Trust Him, and you will be satisfied, God will take care of you!
Lonely and sad, from friends apart, God will take care of you!
He will give peace to your aching heart, God will take care of you!
Prayer: O Lord, I place my life in your hands. Take care of me. Amen
