The Lamb upon the Throne

Gen 42:8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him

Can we see that the Lamb that was slain, is now risen – Jesus and is upon the throne? We have mocked Christ, ignored Him, crucified Him and often betrayed Him. We eventually fail to recognize that He that we maltreated and disdained is upon the throne. Why do we fail to see Christ upon the throne? Is it because He is so gentle and loving? He forgives us so easily and gives us another chance to come to Him. Is it because He comes to us as a brother and a friend that we cannot also see Him as a King. But the King of kings is our brother, our own friend that is closer than any brother we have and can ever know. Don’t you see the joy this should cause knowing the authority in Egypt is not in the hands of a stranger? But then we forgo so many benefits and carry so many needless pains simply because we do not see the one on the throne as our friend, brother, King and our Lord.

Why is it that Joseph is not recognized? Perhaps because it was the very last place they thought Joseph will ever be. Similarly, many do not expect Christ to be on the throne and so imagine themselves to be victims when in reality they are being helped by the Lord. We do not praise God as we should because we do not see Him as we should. The reason the angels worship in a different more respectful manner is because they know whom they bow to – The Almighty.

Jesus is on the throne. Look again and you will see He rules and reigns undisputed even amongst the heathen. What if they had recognized Joseph immediately ? Joseph would have welcomed them warmly like the father welcoming the fearful prodigal son. Have no fear … Jesus knows all about you – everything you have done and can do … and still says He hates sin but loves you – the sinner. Sinner come home to Jesus. Do not waste another minute. He rules over all … including his enemies.

Song.

Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea,

A great High Priest, whose name is love, Whoever lives and pleads for me.

My name is graven in His hands, My name is written on His heart;

I know that, while in heav’n He stands, No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, I look

Up ward above and see Him there who made an end of all my sin.

Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free;

For God the Just is satisfied to look on Him, and pardon me.

Behold Him there! the risen Lamb! My perfect, spotless righteousness,

The great unchangeable I Am, The King of glory and of grace!

One with Himself, I cannot die, My soul is purchased by His blood;

My life is hid with Christ on high, With Christ, my Savior and my God

Prayer: O Lord, reign and rule forever. Grant me mercy from your throne of grace. Amen

Do you know Him?

Gen 42:8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him

How can we know someone as awesome, as mighty, as limitless, as infinite as God except that He reveals Himself to us. God is great. We are grass. How much of God will grass ever discover. Yet God reveals Himself to us by His creation, by His living word and by His innumerable hosts of messengers and ministering angels, watching over us. Indeed, much of our wanderings and problems arise from poor knowledge of God. The enemy of our soul, he himself having been one of his most trusted angels before, does know well that those that know their God will be undefeatable in their exploits.

The result of not knowing God is that we fret, we fear, we are too easily discouraged and place too much emphasis on our deeds – good or bad, as if they could do anything to God’s infinite purposes. If we knew God, then we will know that God sees our thoughts clearly from afar – even before the thoughts came to us. God is so complex and so simple. He is so big and yet so small. He does not need a microscope to manage the unseen cells and organisms yet to be discovered. He does not need a telescope or a space ship to reach out to galaxies that fit into his hands. How could we describe Him. All our words are too limited, because we can only use our experience and created senses to observe that which created us and is well beyond our experience. All our words fail.

If God does not reveal Himself to us, then seeking to know Him would be fruitless. But in Christ we see God walk the earth. In His word, we see God in print. In His Holy Spirit we see God as our comforter. The Son, the Father and the Holy Spirit … all the same God. The Bible says that mankind is different in that we were made in His own image. Even angels were not said to be made in the image of God. Do you know that angels marvel at humanity and learn about God from observing us.

Satan fights the knowledge of God in our lives more than any other attribute. He fills our minds with knowledge … so much vain knowledge, so we are limited. Can you imagine the difference to the brothers of Joseph when they knew God and knew they were forgiven and all is well. When we know God, we will realize we need not walk in guilt. He has forgiven us. When we walk in guilt, we walk in fear and continually carry burdens we are not even meant to lift.

Song.

Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you, There is no greater thing

You’re my all, you’re the best – You’re my joy, my righteousness … And I love you, Lord

All I once held dear, built my life upon – All this world reveres, and wars to own

All I once thought gain I have counted loss – Spent and worthless now, compared to this

Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you, There is no greater thing

You’re my all, you’re the best You’re my joy, my righteousness … And I love you, Lord

Prayer: O Lord, reveal Yourself even more in my life. Amen

A Frowning Providence

jesus_hugGen 42:7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

Why does God frown when He is overwhelmed with joy? The mission of our Lord Jesus is only truly accomplished when sinners come home. Have you ever felt a sense of a job well done? Has it ever become clear to you why certain things had to be the way they were? This feeling comes with a sense of joy. Yet, Joseph spoke roughly and strangely to His brothers.

There are times when the voice of God is harsh and cold, when it does not seem like we have anything to do with Jesus. There are times when we feel Jesus cannot want us and prefers to be distant for us. We sometimes imagine there is some sin that Jesus must know about and he cannot want us anymore. These are not just all untrue but very far from what is really occurring.

There is nothing we can do that Christ has not paid for in full. Joseph missed his brothers and in a strange land yearned for the company of His blood relatives. He missed his father, he missed Benjamin and could barely resist the temptation to fully reveal himself. There must be tests in our Christian walk. There is a process of growing, chastening and getting us perfect. Some of these come at early stages of growth , some come in our latter years. Could mankind do more to God than kill His own only begotten son sent to seek and save them? If mankind could be forgiven for crucifying Jesus, could they not be forgiven anything by God. In similar fashion the brothers “killed” the favorite son of their father. Could they still do more or worse. God forgives sin if we confess them to Him. There is nothing that God cannot give us, if He gave us His only son. When we see that the value of the painful death of Christ is only realized when the prodigal son returns home, then we can understand that behind God’s hard chastening is a great joy that the sinner is returning home.

It is often true when we come to Christ in our initial experiences that we do not really know Him, and Christ has to send His Holy Spirit to do the work of transformation and help our perfection … as we are changed from glory to glory. Rejoice. The chastening you are going through is a good sign. Joseph did not speak roughly to any other person but his brothers. Also note that Joseph wanted all his family with him and needed an approach that would not incur the wrath of the Egyptians or even bring hurt to them. He was still uncertain of the reactions of his brothers or even of the Egyptians to them. Would his brothers go back and tell another lie to their father, never to return, Joseph works a plan that will – in the end – bring the entire family to safety. Do not be sad when God seems rough, He is working out His great plans so that you come to the beautiful end that is expected.

Song.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace

Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face

Prayer: O Lord, you are chastening me so that I can be perfected and partake in a greater glory. Help me to see and know this. Amen

Joseph Knew Them

Gen 42:7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

Jesus knows them that are His. The Bible says they were already given to Him before the foundations of the earth. Joseph can recognize His family although many years have passed. He knew what they had done to him and their wicked thoughts. Joseph could recognize their features and their way of dressing, their way of speaking … in Egypt they were strange … but not to Joseph. If the brothers of Joseph had perhaps changed their clothing to fit better with Egypt … learnt their language and accent and hide their own … if they had borrowed some attributes from Egypt … perhaps supposing this will help their mission … if they had done these things, Joseph who was not expecting to see them in his palace may not have recognized them and they may have just come and gone … with food, but never knowing that Joseph was alive and well.

How peculiar are you in Egypt? How easy is it to identify you as a Christian? Many say what we wear does not matter and how we look does not matter … and that it is what is in us that counts. I pray this is so but suspect otherwise. Joseph did not know his brothers by some inspiration … he could recognize them because they dressed as their father had taught them to dress … with the same manners as they had been trained to exhibit. Joseph knew these mannerisms and ways and knew they were not Egyptian … He also knew these were the ways of the tribe of Canaan. This caused him to look again at their faces and complexion … they did not have strange tattoos, nor did they swear like desert men.

Also consider that Joseph was not recognizable because he had completely changed his clothes and appeared to them as an Egyptian. Our appearance affects our recognition. There is a major lesson here. We are a peculiar people, a chosen nation, a holy priesthood … do we communicate this identity or are we easily confused with others. A day comes when Jesus says He knows us not because we say so but because internally and externally we are truly like Him … we love His teachings and obey his words. There are many who profess Him, but to whom He says …I knew you not.

Song.

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart,

in my heart. In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart,in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart,

in my heart. In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart, in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart.

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart,

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart.

Prayer: O Lord, Help me to be different – peculiar … like Jesus. Amen

Joseph – Governor (Part III)

greatnessGen 42:6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth

In the previous study, we considered the different categories of power. The highest is spiritual power, the other is political and the least is economic power. The lower powers are subject to the highest powers, spiritual power being the highest. We can also move up and go higher. We need to operate at spiritual levels that permit us to challenge wickedness tormenting nations and devils behind evils in the land. But how do we go higher?

Luk 14:10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

The secret of positioning for elevation by God is in humility. When we read Matthew 5, we see that all the attributes in the beatitudes – the poor in spirit, mourners, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted all point to humility.

Humility is not poverty nor weakness. Humility is turning away from self and our wicked ways and being as nothing before God. It is time to humble yourself, to be quiet before God and be obedient to His leading. He will call you up to go higher and even higher. With spiritual power you can be on your knees and decree changes which will cause earthly kings to tremble and demonic plans to collapse. What a difference you will make in your family, marriage, church and the nations.

Jesus went down several steps till he ended in the grave … but He was raised to the highest levels. He did not just grab power – even though it was offered to Him by the people, He preferred to die, to come down even more. Christ did this because He knew God’s ways and principles for elevation. Jesus operated in the highest of spiritual realms. He spoke truths boldly and accepted His crucifixion like a meek lamb for the slaughter. Yet He was the mighty Lord of Hosts with innumerable angels waiting for His orders.

As they all bowed to Joseph. God will help us to reign over wickedness rather than have them reign over us.

Song.

At the Name of Jesus

Every knee shall bow,

Every tongue confess Him

King of glory now;

‘Tis the Father’s pleasure

We should call Him Lord,

Who from the beginning

Was the mighty Word.

Prayer: O Lord, teach me how to come up higher and higher every day. Amen

Joseph – Governor (Part 11)

Gen 42:6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth

There is another category of power, the highest category. This is spiritual power. We can have power with God operating from Heavenly places where we have been seated with Christ. This is the highest seat of power from which we challenge principalities and wicked powers, rulers over nations and villages and tribes and religious devilry. This category is the highest category of all. Indeed political and economic powers are subject to spiritual powers. If you find yourself still standing in spite of all that has come against you, it may be you have a reservoir of spiritual strength given by God that has not been allowed to fail. Do not laugh at those who have fallen, lest you lose the grace that kept you standing. All power including spiritual power belongs to God.

Jesus walked as the example of how we should walk in spiritual power. He did not judge by sight and mere human senses. He waited always on God, his Father. In the same way, we should wait always on the Holy Spirit. If we are seated with Christ, it means we have been already given the permission to operate at the highest but still we refuse to come up higher. God is inviting us to come up.

The brothers of Joseph and indeed all who came … bowed to Joseph – but we see this as only a political power. Indeed it released great wealth but we are told little of what was happening spiritually. Everything on the earth will bow to political power. But how about the things in the Heavens and under the earth. It should not surprise us that several years after Joseph died a Pharaoh arose which did not know him and erased his legacy. Power can also change hands. Politically and spiritually.

Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in Heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Jesus is the model given to the Christian. We are to walk in spiritual power with Christ. Every knee includes sickness, poverty, enchantments, curses … they all must bow to the name of Jesus. The things in the Heavens and the worst of hell must all bow before Jesus. There is an appointed day in eternity where every knee will literally bow to Jesus at the gates of eternal judgment. I urge you to flee from teachings that suggest another name has been given to some for salvation — but the name of Jesus. When we operate in spiritual power, even the economic and the political must bow to the glory of Christ Jesus.

Song.

All power! All power belongs to God. (Chorus)

Prayer: O Lord, I am weak but thou art mighty – connect me again to your spiritual reservoir of great power and switch on the flow of current. Amen

Joseph – Governor (Part 1)

Gen 42:6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth

There are many categories of power. The Bible declares that all power belongs to God – whichever the category. There is the lowest category which is economic power. This is wealth and financial means that enable us not just to be sustained but to accomplish exploits such as feeding others. The Bible tells us that poverty does not glorify God nor will His own lack for bread or beg. Our Father is a great provider. There is also political power which is higher than economic power. Political power will often equate to economic power. This is power to rule over territories and demand obedience of populations. Joseph had political power as governor over the land. But there is a third category of power. This is Spiritual power i.e. power with God to decree and shape history from the spiritual realms. This is the highest power. People will bow before all categories of power. The higher the category level the more people will be subjects.

The brothers of Joseph, lacked every category of power. The famine had wiped out economic power that they may have had, they had no political power in the foreign land of Egypt, they were subjects and so they bowed before Joseph their junior brother. God does not want us to be powerless, robbed of all our powers. A powerless Christian is weak, vulnerable and will fall into many traps and temptations. It is not that he wants to be unreliable, but he lacks the power to sustain his resolve in whatever he sets his mind to. He ends up double minded – weak in all His ways.

How long will you bow to forces you should reign over? How long will you be subject to even the lower powers. Is it not God who gives power to make wealth? In this earlier part of this devotional reflect on the first two categories of power. Perhaps you are failing because you find yourself always oppressed and made to give in – even when you see otherwise, you cannot backup your decision with action. You have no means to look after your home and feed your children. You need to pay the rent. You want to build a church for God and give even more to others but you have no power to do so. Instead you borrow and bow to crippling debts.

Today by the mercy and grace of God you are coming up higher. God will empower you financially to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory. Go to the God who empowers, tell him what you want to do for Him with the power that He will grant.

Song.

All hail the power of Jesus name

Let Angels prostrate fall 2ce

Bring forth the royal diadem

and crown Him Lord of all.

Prayer: O Lord, I am tired of the valley of powerlessness … raise me up in your power. Amen

Not all that come

Gen 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

The Bible says that God foreknew all that would be saved and that these He sanctified and subsequently glorified. Only those drawn by the Spirit of God can come to His salvation. There were so many that say that they came to God but they came not by the door, but they jumped over the fence. In times of difficulty many will say they serve God, but those that truly love God will be known by God, set apart by God and eventually glorified by God. Always thanking God.

The Bible says concerning the congregation, many will say they did great exploits in the name of Christ, but Christ knows all that are His. Just as Joseph knows His brothers. There were many others that came and bought so much corn. These are like the many that come to the word of God and use its principles to improve their life and even did many exploits – but God did not know them. They did not obey Him, and were not assigned tasks by God. These are like wandering stars …they are uncontrolled even in the sanctuary.

The main difference between Joseph’s brothers and the rest that came is that Joseph knew his bothers. God had pre-chosen them as his brothers – they did not qualify themselves by any performance or lack of it. It was all grace that elected them into the family of Joseph. They are the ones who will find a bread that is already paid for and ushered to live for the rest of their lives in Goshen. They are made great by grace.

As you reflect on this short text, reflect that it is not all that cry Lord, Lord that will be joint heirs with Him. Dearth can bring many mercenaries to come for what they need to survive. Hunger attracts wolves as well as sheep. Goats will look for pasture just as lambs need to feed. It is not ours to judge, for we do not know. God gives the toughest assignments to His cherished ones, because He foreknew them that they will remain faithful even if faced with death. His own are His special army – co-workers in His Revival. A pastor once put up a sign board “This Church will have either a revival or a funeral.” … It had a Revival. God knows those who care for Him than their very lives. Are you one of those to whom He will say “I never knew you”?

Many have come to the Church and find only food … true salvation reunites us with the family of Christ – we find a brother.

Song.

The saints of old were beaten, tried, condemned and even crucified.

These martyr men beat no retreat when flames were licking at their feet

They saw the tyrant’s brandished steel, But still they offered no appeal.

They struck no bargain for their lives, For their children or their wives.

All slowly roasted in the flames. While angels wrote each of their names.

Within a book God calls His own – To be proclaimed before His throne.

Prayer: O Lord, bring your Revival. Amen

Famine in Canaan.

Gen 42:5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

I observe a mystery here. Why does God use Egypt to protect His own in a global famine? Why does God permit famine in the land of Canaan. The only answer I dare suggest is that “It pleased God to do so” … it was the plan of God. There are many bruising things that happen but for God it brings pleasure.

Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

The pain, hunger and thirst of famine may have destroyed many, but it caused the family of Joseph to come to him and the greatest joys. Many families of thieves were thrown into grief when their sons were crucified, but the crucifixion of Christ ushered the beginning of a return to glory for the family of God and this pleased God.

God has need of famines not just to bring his own to Him, but for opportunities to demonstrate His mighty provisions to them that trust Him. God has need of famines to separate those on the narrow path of trusting Him from those who really serve their belly. Remember Job… A famine came into his life as a test. But what did Job say?

Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

Consider this devotional. Have you gone through famine situations in your life? Did you pass the examination of God? Were your ways maintained or did they change? Did you curse God or were you steadfast knowing this will also pass?

Song.

Set thou thy trust upon the Lord, and be thou doing good;

And so thou in the land shalt dwell, and verily have food.

Delight thyself in God; he’ll give thine heart’s desire to thee.

Thy way to God commit, him trust, it bring to pass shall he.

And, like unto the light, he shall thy righteousness display;

And he thy judgment shall bring forth, like noon-tide of the day.

Rest in the Lord, and patiently wait for him: do not fret

For him who, prospering in his way, success in sin doth get.

Let anger cease within thy heart, and wrath forsake thou too:

Fret not thyself in any wise, that evil thou should’st do.

For those that evil-doers are shall be cut off and fall:

But those that wait upon the Lord, the earth inherit shall..

Prayer: O Lord, send your comforter – The Holy Spirit … to comfort many Christians in pain and anguish. Amen

Hold nothing back

Gen 42:4 But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

What are you holding back and shielding from the Lord’s use? Which area of your life do you think you must protect by yourself? We must come completely and fully. Many times we hold back two categories of things. We hold back our priciest treasures, our career, our dreams, our long held agendas. We fear God will tear them up, just as Jacob’s coat of many colors were torn apart by mischief. We do not want to take the full risk, and so we hold back our cultural traditions and areas we think God has no interest. But God wants all of us as an offering laid on the altar – chopped up and put on the wood – awaiting the fire of God.

Another thing that many hold on to are sins and ways that we have become so accustomed to having with us, that so easily beset us and in some cases private sins that we fear God may choose to bring to the open. The brothers of Joseph could not admit that they had lied and Joseph may not be dead. Come before God and be plain in your confessions. He knows anyway … everything. Nothing is hidden from Him.

As you meditate on this devotional, what aspect of your life have you not handed to God – what are you still trying to protect from God’s salvation. All must be brought and be crucified with Christ to experience the same power of resurrection in Him. Our “Benjamins” which we feel we can manage without the salvation of God tend to be our weakest targets – most vulnerable to the enemies arrows.

Jacob was wrong again in his conclusions that if Benjamin travelled to Egypt, he would be hurt. If only he could see that Benjamin was about to be rejoined with the senior offspring of his late mother Rachel. Benjamin would have missed his brother Joseph and it seems Jacob passed his preferential love for Joseph now to Benjamin. Jacob did not know he was delaying Benjamin from the happiest union he could ever have. What joys we hold back, when we keep our best away from Christ – hidden in the closet of our hearts. Lord, today I pray – take my all.

Song.

Faith in Christ will save me!

Let me trust Thy weeping Son

Trust the work that he has done,

To His arms, Lord help me run

Faith in Christ will save me!

Prayer: O Lord, give me grace to surrender all to Christ. My ups, downs, dreams, wealth, hopes, victories and disappointments – let me hold nothing back. Amen
