Experience is not our Teacher

Gen 42:4 But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

Jacob cannot trust his sons to look after Benjamin. It is not unlikely that he has seen the animosity between the houses of Leah and Rachel and the envy of Rachel’s children. He also senses that Benjamin, being the only surviving son (in his mind) of the children of Rachel, must be preserved – but he is wrong. His experience tells him to keep Benjamin also to preserve the tribe perhaps if all the other brothers are killed. The strange land of Egypt did not bring any good to the ancestors of Jacob … Benjamin one way or the other would be safer at home. But experience is not our teacher. God is our teacher. God does not interfere in the wrong conclusions of Jacob because they will still work for good.

Beware of conclusions based only on experience … we should form the habit of checking our actions with God. The house of Jacob was torn with envy, sorrow and fears … this is not a good platform for good decisions. We must ask God – especially when our experiences make us suspicious of others – and we need God to divorce our thinking from pains and distortions of the past. Meditate on the decisions you have made based on suspicions and past hurts and anxieties. Did they end up right? Ask God to help you make the right decision. Experience can of course be useful. But do not permit it to be your teacher. Instead let your Savior lead you. Let the word of God be your tutor. Help us to forgive past hurts and forget all that must be forgotten.  We learn from experience but must be guided by God.

Song.

All the way my Savior leads me;

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy,

Who thro’ life has been my Guide?

Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,

Here by faith in Him to dwell!

For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well;

For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me,

Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for ev’ry trial,

Feeds me with the living bread.

Though my weary steps may falter,

And my soul athirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see;

Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

All the way my Savior leads me;

Oh, the fullness of His love!

Perfect rest to me is promised

In my Father’s house above.

When my spirit, clothed immortal,

Wings its flight to realms of day,

This my song thro’ endless ages: Jesus led me all the way;

This my song thro’ endless ages: Jesus led me all the way.

Prayer: O Lord, Lead us all the way. Amen

Hidden Agenda

Gen 42:3 And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt

Many times we are convinced we know what we are being asked to do and we obey … but what we do not know is the hidden objective of God. God is known to hide His objectives from the eyes of men until the appointed time to reveal it.

1Sa 9:3 And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

Saul has been sent to seek the asses that were lost. This was the assignment given by Kish and Saul obeys … but God has planned a completely different objective to lift Saul up to the throne of Israel. Samuel meets Saul to prepare him for the throne only because Saul obeys His father, Kish. The assignment is a trivial assignment … not in the least kingly you may add … but it will lead to the throne. When faced with assignments, do not ever forget that God may have a completely different and hidden agenda for that assignment … do not judge assignments by your perception of what they could accomplish. Rather, be sure that God is with you. Going to Egypt is described as going down … because it is a spiritually inferior location … a place of idols and witchcraft. But God has an important hidden agenda. Reflect on what God has asked you to do … lean not to your understanding. Things are not as they seem.

Song.

Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God!

He, whose Word cannot be broken, Formed thee for His own abode.

On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose?

With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

See! the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love,

Well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove:

Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage—

Grace which, like the Lord, the Giver, Never fails from age to age?

Round each habitation hov’ring, See! the cloud and fire appear

For a glory and a cov’ring, Showing that the Lord is near:

Blest inhabitants of Zion, Washed in the Redeemer’s blood—

Jesus, whom their souls rely on, Makes them kings and priests to God.

Savior, if of Zion’s city – I thro’ grace a member am,

Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Thy Name:

Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show;

Solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion’s children know.

Prayer: O Lord, your agenda is a great, awesome and hidden one … but always working for our joys and good. Help me to acknowledge you in all my ways and know that you are always working something for my good. Amen

A Free Salvation

Gen 42:3 And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt

The blessings of God are not cheap. The most precious is completely unaffordable – our salvation, and that is why Jesus Christ had to pay the price. There are many ways we misrepresent the price of salvation. Many for years have been coming to Christ with an action or a sacrifice or a contribution. But salvation is full and free to us because of Jesus. All the corn in Egypt was free and available to the sons of Jacob only and only because Joseph paid the price and went to the pit, and to the dungeons of Egypt, suffering as a lamb that goes to the slaughter. It was Jesus and His work on the cross that bought our salvation.

When we seek a salvation without Christ Jesus, we present a salvation that we must work for. When we think we are just the right person for salvation, we present our human goodness as a price. When we believe we are too bad for salvation, we declare that the blood of Jesus could not possibly be adequate for our salvation. How is it that we bear so many needless burdens? We want a salvation that some man somewhere can take some credit for, but this cannot be the salvation of God.

Note from the text though that the sons of Jacob did what was reasonable within the context of the understanding that they had of the situation. May God give us an understanding that is true and complete. Our salvation is free but must be worked with fear and trembling. There are labors in the vineyard and battles with the one who contends for our soul. But our salvation remains a free gift of God. The brothers obeyed their father and went down to Egypt. It was a long tedious and risky journey, but God had preordained it to prosper their way.

There are no devices, there are no creeds, there are no offerings or spiritual arguments for salvation beyond the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary for the sinner. Reflect on this.

Song.

Enough for me that Jesus saves; This ends my fear and doubt;

A sinful soul I come to Him, He’ll never cast me out.

I need no other argument, I need no other plea

It is enough that Jesus died and that He died for me.

Prayer: O Lord, in the past I was ungrateful and misguided, presenting works of self-improvement – instead of my whole life. Jesus I now come to you – with nothing else but as a sinful soul. Save me Lord Jesus and do not cast me out. Amen

Help our Doubts

Gen 42:2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

We reap what we sow. Jacob the former deceiver was now under the lie that Joseph was dead. His conclusions were wrong. His utterances were misplaced, but God remains merciful. God sees our struggles and failings and has not decided to abandon us. He works above our very limited appreciation of His wonderful works. He is indeed a great God. The wrong conclusions of Jacob are based on his incomplete picture.

Jacob says he has heard that there is corn in Egypt but he does not know the greater refreshing truth that Joseph is alive and ruling in Egypt. He has doubts as to whether the Hebrews will be well received by the Egyptians, he has doubts whether the corn will be available and affordable for them – we know this because they had been ravaged also by the famine.

Jacob asks his sons to go and buy. He has doubts of how much they will be able to procure and how long it will last. He does not know that the price has already been paid by Joseph his son that was “dead”. Jacob was already seeing death and had doubts on how long they would be sustained – even if they found food in Egypt … would it be enough, would it be too late … how would they obtain a continued supply for their sustenance. More doubts. Jacob does not know that God has made an elaborate provision to ensure that they do not die, rather they would live the rest of their lives in the best of Egypt.

My God help our doubts for they appear so legitimate. Meanwhile God has made extraordinary provisions ahead for His own. Well in excess of our understanding. A full price has been paid for our salvation, the word is forever settled and we only need to trust it … and we shall not die, rather we shall live to declare the word of God and His praises even until eternity. But today, many want to buy salvation with works or other things. Today, we have doubts if God truly desires to save us – because we are so bad. Today we have doubts if we will live through the issues and problems.

Cast away your doubts. You do not have the full picture of things. Instead believe His word which gives you His revealed agenda. Pray for more understanding and revelation – but meanwhile, simply trust that He whom you have trusted – our Lord Jesus Christ – He will come through. Very soon all the provisions that have been made ahead will soon manifest their purpose. Soon you will be ashamed that you ever doubted Him.

Song.

Faint not, nor fear, his arms are near,

He changeth not, and thou art dear;

Only believe, and thou shalt see

That Christ is all in all to thee.

Prayer: O Lord, Help my doubts. Strengthen my faith. I want to believe. Help me. Amen

The Ultimate Assignment

Gen 42:2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

God has assignments for us in different forms, but there is one destiny changing assignment. Often it does not seem to be important but our obedience is so critical now. God may have to surround these assignments with unusual circumstances that will compel us to behave as He wants us to … this is to help us. In this situation, the threat of death looms over the household of Jacob and a desperate move to go to a strange land did not appear to be of any value apart from arresting starvation.

Training our children to be obedient is important. There is a generation that believes parents do not have a role but to just guide and present options to their children. Children are to be instructed in the way of the Lord and especially taught to obey their parents. Parents must seek God and provide Godly example. The house of Jacob is still united, but incomplete in that Joseph was missing. Destiny was about to be fulfilled and the key was obedience to an assignment that looked trivial … but it was the ultimate assignment. I suspect that a generation that is not sensitive to obedience to parents is a generation that will not fulfill its destiny. Obedience is much better than sacrifice. Be accustomed to obeying first rather than packaging gifts to leaders or honoring men of God … our first question to be answered is “Have we listened carefully to all the instructions given to us? Have we obeyed them all?” May God help us to hearken and obey Him always.

Song.

Have Thine own way, Lord, Have Thine own way;

Thou art the Potter; I am the clay.

Mould me and make me After Thy will,

While I am waiting, Yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord, Have Thine own way;

Search me and try me, Master, today.

Whiter than snow, Lord, Wash me just now,

As in Thy presence Humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord, Have Thine own way;

Wounded and weary, Help me, I pray.

Power, all power, Surely is Thine;

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

Have Thine own way, Lord, Have Thine own way;

Hold o’er my being Absolute sway.

Fill with Thy Spirit Till all shall see

Christ only, always, Living in me.

Prayer: O Lord, release more grace for obedience to saints all over the world. Amen

The Beginning of Restoration

Gen 42:1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

In this text, we see the initial stages for revival and restoration – no matter how bad or deteriorated the situation. First we thank God that Jacob is still alive for it is only the living that can come to God. If you are still breathing then God can still rescue you from whatever damage or destructions lie at your door. Death was waiting to snatch the victims of the famine – a famine which had spread even to the tents of Jacob.

The first stage is realizing that Jesus has His salvation and only waits for us to come to Him. There is no other first step. The prodigal son received grace for that first stage. That is why the gospel must be preached with every means possible to tell all that the Bread of Heaven is available. Nothing must be allowed to stop the preaching of the gospel, there is no barrier that must be permitted to get in the way of hearing the gospel. Entertainment and variety shows masquerading as the gospel provide confusing alternatives. Today, many now tell people in faraway lands like China and Japan that there may be other ways apart from Christ for their salvation. How wicked this is. For in these far away lands, they groan under a bondage for which only Christ has the answer. Look to Jesus and live.

The second stage is to question our wanderings. The most common error is to look up to people, often ourselves. Our leaders – good as they may be, or even your pastor is not the answer and all must be pointed to Christ. Why do you look elsewhere for restoration? Why not lift up your eyes to the hills from whence cometh your help. What is the reason for not going to Jesus.

There are many reasons. Some have not really heard that the gospel is good news for all sinners that come to Jesus. Many have misrepresented the gospel as negative and faultfinding. It is not. All – even witches and wizards … all can come to Him and receive transforming grace in the bread that satisfies. Some have been impressed by the achievements of people and the intelligence and brilliance of human inventions and ideas. Excellent as all these may be, you will need grace to take your eyes off them. Churches have built men focused ministries and many miss the Lord of the Church. In this text, be sure you understand that Christ is waiting for you to come to Him for what you need, and you must take your eyes off whatever stops you from coming.

I know, you say … you are not clean to come. Your hunger is your qualification and not your virtue. Receive grace to come to Christ. Go on your knees. Now. Go and find the resting place waiting for you. Have you heard the news. Jesus saves. Have you spread the message to far lands. Tweet: Jesus Saves today. Stop looking around – look to Jesus.

Song.

“I ‘ve a message from the Lord, Hallelujah! The message; unto you I’ll give

‘Tis recorded in His word, Halleluyah.! It is only that you “look and live”

“Look and live “my brother live, look to Jesus now and live

Tis recorded in His word Halleluyah; it is only that you ‘look and live”

Prayer: O Lord, Begin a work of restoration as I commune afresh with Christ … looking up to Him for grace for myself and for my Church and nation. Amen

God has a Way

Gen 42:1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

Even in the worst of situations, God has a way. Egypt was the last place Jacob and his family would have thought of, because they had been told never to go down to Egypt. The earlier patriarchs who went down to Egypt erred to do so.

When Abram went down to Egypt because of famine, he came up with a deception that Sarai was his sister … God had to help him to survive that mistake. Abram had a son by the Egyptian Hagar – another wrong and costly move. God told Isaac specifically not to go to Egypt.

Gen 26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

But God did not tell Jacob not to consider Egypt. Be careful of traditions and patterns that tie us down. God does not need to do things as He has done before. We need grace to understand His ways and hear Him specifically for our individual situations. I have often wondered … why is it that every time there was famine … it was always Egypt that came up as a solution. Egypt is a place of unusual testing to bring out what is in our heart and to birth a new move to the next level when we have passed divine examination. For Jacob, it was clear … it was Egypt or death. What matters is that we do what God wants us to do. Go to God on the specific matter you are dealing with and get a clear picture of where you need to be. Get your answers from God and be at peace knowing He will still work out His promises at the appointed time. May God also anoint our instincts to respond to Him … especially in critical situations.

Song.

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, Trusting only Thee,

Trusting Thee for full salvation, Great and free.

I am trusting Thee for pardon, At Thy feet I bow;

For Thy grace and tender mercy, Trusting now.

I am trusting Thee for cleansing – In the crimson flood;

Trusting Thee to make me holy By Thy blood.

I am trusting Thee to guide me: Thou alone shalt lead,

Ev’ry day and hour supplying All my need.

I am trusting Thee for power; Thine shall never fail;

Words which Thou Thyself shalt give me Must prevail.

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus; Never let me fall;

I am trusting Thee forever, And for all.

Prayer: O Lord, I need more grace to trust you to guide me in situations calling for unusual actions. Amen

All Countries Come

Gen 41:55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. 56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. 57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands

Isa 60:3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

We tend not to truly come to Christ until we see that all other alternatives have failed. We tend not to seek the bread of Heaven until our own bread is finished. Joseph opened the storehouses, indeed he had the keys. When the famine waxed sore in the land, Joseph opened the storehouses. Jesus is offering His own bread even now, the bread of Heaven is given to us. It cost the blood of Jesus Christ. It was not free, only someone else paid the price. All have been invited to be saved from all over the world. Only if they will come to Jesus and be surrendered to Him. Whatever He says do and see water turn to wine, experience the dead come back to life and transformations.

Many go to Christ because of the coming famine – physical and spiritual. God is reviving His own. In every nation of the earth, there are people who come to Jesus. God is going to cause nations to come to Him. Will you be part of his great work? Would you be a co-laborer as the Holy Spirit ministers, bringing many rare and rich blessings with it. See!, Jesus is coming for a Bride and not a beggar …. not a hungry and sick Church … not a debutante show girl of the world but His spotless Bride. Ponder over this truth, what must be your part in partnering with Him to feed the world with restoring truth.

God has created the saints to be part of the answer in Christ and not to complain like others or to analyze the famine. Christianity brings solutions to issues. That is why we are described as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Lord help us to shine with Christ.

Somehow the news spread that there was bread in Egypt. Will you be amongst those Christ needs to spread the word all over the world that the answer is Jesus. Spread the news far and near. In Egypt people heard, in distant lands people also heard and they all came. All come to Christ as they came to Joseph.

Pray for the coming Revival.

Song.

Great is the need of our nations,

Great is the need of this hour

Lord, we abhor our stagnation.

Answer with Holy Ghost power.

Prayer: O Lord, Empower me to spread the good news. The bread of life is Jesus Christ that satisfies. Grant me grace to carry that word even to distant lands using all possible means.

Go to Jesus

Gen 41:55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. 56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. 57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands

When they wanted wine at a wedding and there was none. Mary stepped up and told them of Christ … she said “Go to Him and do whatever He says”. Christ is the solution. It was not obvious they needed Joseph until the famine. Today, there is a famine of truth, a famine of love, a famine of integrity, a famine of decency and order … there is a decay and a societal malaise that only Christ can arrest. But who is going to point the nations to Jesus. Who is going to ask people to come to Jesus and live? Who is going to suggest that there is hope and that hope is Christ. It does not seem correct to mention Jesus anymore … and some ask us not to confuse religion with government as they continually push God out of schools, meetings and more events. How sad. Jesus is still waiting.

If Pharaoh did not point to Joseph what do you think would have happened. Note in the seven years of plenty no one cried to Pharaoh. Many will not cry to the Lord until issues deteriorate significantly. We often wait until it is almost too late. Thankfully – we have a God who reverses the irreversible. Do not waste another minute, in your prayers take the issues of the land, of your church and of your nation to the Lord. Jesus will tell you what to do. Jesus will give answers and guide to a solution of peace. Begin to be the salt of the earth that carries the solution that arrests the decay.

Song.

Jesus is the answer; Jesus is the way

He knows what to do when we have gone astray

Give all your worship. Listen for His word

Jesus is the answer; Jesus is the Lord

Jesus is the answer; Jesus is the way

It’s never too late to come to Him do not delay

He turns water to wine and sets the captives free

Jesus is the answer; and He reigns supreme

Jesus is the answer; Jesus is the way

Shout a loud Hallelujah – Praise His holy name

He is coming back to reign with all the raptured saints

Jesus is the answer that the world needs today

Prayer: O Lord, Take control of all issues in my life. Lord Jesus tell me what to do. I come for help and salvation. Let me be guided by you. Amen.

The Salt of the Earth

Gen 41:54 And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

Christ teaches us that we are to be the salt of the earth. We are to be amongst those who bring a good taste where there would have been none. In this text we note that Egypt is different because of the revelation of Joseph. The Bible says we the children of God have the mind of Christ. That means we have solutions and understandings that meet the needs of people. Just as Christ went around doing good – we are able to do the same with a different renewed mind. A dearth means shortage. When there is dearth, there is sorrow, crime and darkness creeps in. But where there is bread, there is joy, fulfillment and satisfaction.

Our Christianity must have a positive influence on our homes and families … it must impact our communities positively. The gospel empowers people to live in peace and contentment. The evidence of the Holy Spirit at work can be seen in a visible change for good. Salt must be applied. God applies us to different situations to change that situation. This means we must release our lives to God to use us to His glory. Sometimes it may be in a capacity that we find easy to embrace. But in other situations, it could be in a sacrificial role which demands a heavy cost from us. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit that makes this world bearable and the saints of God make the positive difference. One of the reasons why times of trouble come after the rapture is because the Holy Spirit – the restrainer and born again Christians are no more on the earth . Without the salt and light … the earth becomes an unbearable place and chaos takes over. One of the reasons we should thank God includes that we are saved by His grace and we carry a light and comfort that impacts others positively. Imagine what your community will be without you? If there will be no change, then such Christianity must be re-examined. God help us to have the impact that we were destined to have.

Song.

Holy Ghost, with light divine

Shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the shades of night away,

Turn my darkness into day.

Holy Ghost, with pow’r divine

Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;

Long hath sin, without control,

Held dominion o’er my soul.

Holy Ghost, with joy divine

Cheer this sadd’ned heart of mine;

Bid my many woes depart,

Heal my wounded, bleeding heart.

Holy Spirit, all divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;

Cast down ev’ry idol throne,

Reign supreme, and reign alone.

Prayer: O Holy Spirit. May your impact be felt through us in all the communities you have sent us to go. Amen
