Do not Despair

Gen 42:16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. 17 And he put them all together into ward three days.

It is wise to be a man of few words. We must learn silence and how to speak few words. Words have weight and the fewer the better. Our words will also be tested. Joseph tells his brothers that their words will be tested … probed further. Our professions of faith will be tested. Our sermons will be tested. Our declaration of truth will be tested. God does this that we may be proven to be people of integrity. Every higher level of truth will have a higher practical examination. All are to speak truth in love knowing we may sometime in future fail the tests associated with these same truths.

The test seems harsh – to be imprisoned for three days, but when one considers the future bliss in Goshen ahead of them and the joys of being saved from a famine that was destroying others, then the three days seems not as tough. What are you going through now? God already had determined to move you into a position of such joy and wellness to make the present hardships appear only as a bearable inconvenience. Keep singing your song – even in the prison – when all the issues have been proven you will be exalted with Christ.

Do not despair – O tested saint, you will yet celebrate and be celebrated. You will yet dance and jump for joy. Three days in the prison of Egypt will soon be wiped out of your memory as God takes you up again. Things are about to change. Only seek grace to respond well to the matters facing you today. Do not despair. God is with you.

Song.

Why pour’st thou forth thine anxious plaint,

Despairing of relief,

As if the Lord o’erlooked thy cause,

And did not heed thy grief?

Hast thou not known, hast thou not heard,

That firm remains on high

The everlasting throne of Him

Who formed the earth and sky?

Art thou afraid his pow’r shall fail

When comes thy evil day?

And can an all-creating arm

Grow weary or decay?

Supreme in wisdom as in pow’r

The Rock of ages stands;

Though him thou canst not see,

nor trace The working of his hands.

He gives the conquest to the weak,

Supports the fainting heart;

And courage in the evil hour

His heav’nly aids impart.

Mere human pow’r shall fast decay,

And youthful vigor cease;

But they who wait upon the Lord,

In strength shall still increase.

Prayer: O Lord, make haste to help the weak and fainting reader. Amen

Where is your brother ?

Gen 42:15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

The proof of the Christian is in the doing. The question that beats at the door of our hearts today is … where are our brothers? There are many Christians who are too busy with their Christian walk to think about evangelism and helping others. Helping others delays our speed and curtails our progress. Many are confident they will beat their chest at the gates of eternity only to be asked … where is your brother? Yes, your brother the village drunkard, your sister the city prostitute … your brother the brothel manager … your sister the high fashion model. Indeed, you reckoned they would not be interested in the gospel or you were daunted at how you would follow them up. But the records of Heaven indicate they were to have received the gospel through you and that is why you had all the opportunities.

But then you who read this devotional cannot be said to be a spy of the enemy. Go then and look for your brother. Bring him also to be refreshed by the living waters and taste the bread of Heaven. I sometimes guess that the best evidence of salvation is being an incurable evangelist … telling as many as you can that Jesus saves.

I also suspect the trait to easily spot a spy is the quietness that has no converts, no disciple … nothing to show the master if He asks … where is your brother. Prove your faith by sharing it.

Song.

Is your life a channel of blessing? Is the love of God flowing through you?

Are you telling the lost of the Savior? Are you ready His service to do?

Make me a channel of blessing today, Make me a channel of blessing, I pray;

My life possessing, my service blessing, Make me a channel of blessing today.

Is your life a channel of blessing? Are you burdened for those that are lost?

Have you urged upon those who are straying, The Savior who died on the cross?

We cannot be channels of blessing If our lives are not free from all sin;

We will barriers be and a hindrance To those we are trying to win.

Prayer: O Lord, make me a channel of blessing – give me a burden for the lost. Amen

Ye shall be Proved

Gen 42:15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

All will be tested. There will be no exemptions. Old Christians, new Christians … the mature and the toddler. The one who has passed many tests and the one who has failed … All will be tested. Many think that the passing of a test means an end to further testing. Rather, it means we are ready for a higher test. Why does God test us? God is omniscient and knows us already … He knows exactly at what stage we are and what we are capable of doing even in the far future. So why does He need to test us?

He tests us to teach us and to allow us to see ourselves. Our tests are like mirrors placed before us that help us to adjust as required. But this mirror probes into the heart and can reflect for us to see what is really deep inside. Our hearts will often deceive us to suggest we are ready for another higher level … until we understand we need to wait to overcome our greed and selfishness. Tests also help us discipline ourselves in study and preparation. A student will probably not read as hard or study the syllabus if he could be offered a medical degree without an examination. But imagine what kind of surgeon such a person will be. Tests encourage us to go deeper into the word of God.

Many deep truths will not have been uncovered or known by you if you had not gone through tough periods of trials. Tests enable us to experience the rare joy of experiencing success. Have you seen a student going to the notice board to check his score soon to be excited that he has passed … and with flying colors? But tests are also God’s brakes … to stop us – when we are going too fast and close to confronting issues we are not ready for. We are full of zeal and will not be stopped. God must arrange a small test … our failure only means we are going too fast … sometimes we just need to slow down and consider some other matters needing attention … like our family or the less privileged we refuse to see. Enjoy the next test and pass with flying colors knowing that … ye shall be proved and the same God who proves us also helps us to pass.

Song.

Take the world, but give me Jesus! All its joys are but a name;

But His love abideth ever, Thro’ eternal years the same.

O the height and depth of mercy! O the length and breadth of love!

O the fullness of redemption, Pledge of endless life above!

Take the world, but give me Jesus, Sweetest comfort of my soul;

With my Savior watching o’er me I can sing, tho’ billows roll.

Take the world, but give me Jesus! Let me view His constant smile;

Then thro’out my pilgrim journey Light will cheer me all the while.

Take the world, but give me Jesus! In His cross my trust shall be,

Till, with clearer, brighter vision, Face to face my Lord I see.

Prayer: O Lord, move me up only as you have tested and found me ready. But help me to be ready. Amen

A little Lie

Gen 42:13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. 14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

A little lie or omission appears innocent enough. The brothers of Joseph have not told the whole story – they say one is not. They seem to want it understood that Joseph is dead. Probably the lie they told their father. A minor lie you may think but still a lie. The spies of the enemy of our soul are liars for it is their very nature to lie. Their father being the father of liars. There are many things considered not to be lies. Subtle exaggerations, little omissions, minor deviations and so on. Some of this have been carried on for many years. This does not make them true. A lie that has been sustained over decades still remains a lie. Christ taught that let your yes be yes and nay nay. It means we are to be consistent and truthful. Indeed there is nothing to fear if we remain on the side of truth. Joseph calls his brothers spies. He wants to know more. The brothers had become a blood cult bound by the lie that their brother was killed in the wilderness, when they had sold their brothers into slavery and he may still be alive. Lies only ensure we remain captive to the father of liars – the devil.

Christ is merciful. Even the lawful captives shall be set free. Do you have a secret that has kept you bound in lies? Go and tell all to Jesus. Joseph knew the full truth just as Joseph knows the complete story of his brothers. Confess all to Jesus and experience the joy and relief and pardon from Christ who is only saddened by the cords of deception. He will help us to come out with the truth. Is it not easier on their conscience to confess the truth to their old father?

Christ has paid it all. Tell Him all. Especially that little lie.

Song.

You came from Heaven to Earth to show the way

From the earth to the Cross, my debt you paid

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky

Lord, I lift your name on High..

Prayer: O Lord, woe is me for I am undone before You. I need more grace to stand before you. Amen

Puzzling Conversations

Gen 42:13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. 14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

There are times when we are having our conversations with God and God is testing us … seeking to bring out that which is in our hearts. At those times, it appears God does not care or deliberately wants to belittle or hurt us. We are confused and wonder what is going on. The brothers do not understand why Joseph insists that they are spies. They have not dressed as spies nor have they comported themselves as such … they have come openly as pilgrims, brethren of one family but Joseph insists they are spies.

What do we do when it seems we are being accused by none other than God himself? How do we react? Are there times in ministry when we are puzzled at what God seems to be saying. How do we make progress when we are being accused by those who must help us? We must remember that it may be that we are being tested and our hearts can deceive us. We need stillness and patience before God. We cannot come to God expecting God to just respond as we want and quickly too. This would mean we are God and He is not. We need to be reverent in the throne room … waiting upon Him who must have mercy on whom He chooses. The brothers are not innocent and the one before them knows this to be so. Neither are you dear reader. You have sinned and deserve only death, but God is so full of great mercy and He waits to pour mercy upon you? What do you do in these times of waiting … keep serving Him, keep loving Him … keep honoring Him … keep praising Him. Job went through a time of not just failing but of accusations and puzzling examinations. But he held on to the end. Also consider your ways. Repent and seek forgiveness for past misdeeds. The brothers have come before Joseph as if they are completely innocent of all wrongs … there is no remorse for the ill treatment of their brother. Many times we come to God as if God owes us and we have every reason to be answered with favor when the truth is that we first need mercy for all the evils we have done. May God help us. Remain humble … behind the frowning face is a smile. Wait for the smile.

Song.

Approach, my soul, the mercy seat,

Where Jesus answers prayer;

There humbly fall before His feet,

For none can perish there.

Thy promise is my only plea;

With this I venture nigh;

Thou callest burdened souls to Thee,

And such, O Lord, am I!

Bowed down beneath a load of sin,

By Satan sorely pressed,

By war without and fears within,

I come to Thee for rest.

Be Thou my shield and hiding-place,

That, sheltered near Thy side,

I may my fierce accuser face,

And tell him Thou hast died.

Prayer: O merciful Lord, when I come before your throne of mercy – do not refuse my plea. Amen

The Family of God

Gen 42:10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. 11 We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies. 12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

God has a family … there is one father – God who has only one begotten son – Jesus. We are His children, joint heirs with Christ. Christ is also God. Through Christ we have been reconciled back to this family. This is what the Bible teaches us. We are brothers and sisters – not in competition. When a family member suffers, then all suffer. When a family member is in need … all will come together to meet that need. When the Holy Spirit comes upon the Church, there is a sense of oneness and unity not previously known … all possessions are held in common for the entire family … all give generously to others as God has given to them.

Are we all the sons of one man – the God of all the earth? Brothers and sisters will dwell in family love and not seek to hurt each other. We are not spies … we are of one family – God is our father. As you read this devotional ask yourself some questions. Can you stand to see another brother in pain or anguish? Can you help your brother sacrificially? Are you happy to see your brother get ahead of you? The most compelling evidence of Christianity is the love between brothers and brethren. When others see this love, they will come gladly and want to be part of the family. Those who have been chosen will come back home when they sense there is a family somewhere. Have you strayed from your family like the lost son … come home.

Song.

Belovèd, let us love: love is of God;

In God alone hath love its true abode

.

Belovèd, let us love: for they who love,

They only, are His sons, born from above.

Belovèd, let us love: for love is rest,

And he who loveth not abides unblest.

Belovèd, let us love: for love is light,

And he who loveth not dwelleth in night.

Belovèd, let us love: for only thus

Shall we behold that God Who loveth us.

Prayer: O Lord, strengthen the bond of love in the family of God. Amen

The Throne Room

Gen 42:10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. 11 We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies. 12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

The brothers of Joseph say they are not spies and refer to Joseph as lord and his servants. But Joseph persists in his testing. They say they are true men … but Joseph knows that they are not true men. They have lied before, and will lie again.

When the Prophet Isaiah came before the throne of God in a vision, he said “Woes is me for I am undone” . He does not say he is a true man. Before men, we are virtuous in our eyes in spite of the wickedness of our heart. But we cannot come before God with that attitude. When God reveals Himself afresh to you – humble yourself before Him. Be undone before Him for He looks for who to send into His Revival. When we come with our virtues and works, it only shows we have a long distance yet.

No man in himself is true before God. The blood of Christ and His righteousness is our only way of access to remain in His presence. All those who claim they have not sinned, and have a truth of their own are spies, for they have not known redeeming salvation. It is enough that Joseph is before them, they did not need to plead their poor credentials. Similarly, it is more than sufficient that Jesus died and His blood was shed for all our sins. Spies deny the grace in God. Spies deny the complete work of Christ and the liberty therein. They will present their own goodness and see themselves as superior to others … when indeed, all the brothers and family of Joseph would be equivalently saved and totally forgiven. Spies will probe for the past and fish for issues that the blood has dealt with.

As you ponder over this text, it is enough to accept the wickedness of your heart from which everything emanates and the redemption and saving grace of Christ which has forgiven you, now and even in the future when you confess your sins and truly belong to Him. Do not pretend to be better than how the Bible has described you, instead enjoy the grace that is transforming you from glory to glory until we are indeed without blemish, ready for the Heavenly bridegroom. May you walk not in your own truth, but the righteousness that was purchased for you at Calvary.

Grace will make you more like Christ every day and not leave you still as the child of the devil.

Song.

He has paid it all,

He has paid it all,

The Lamb of Calvary,

He has paid it all.

Prayer: O Lord, woe is me for I am undone before You. I need more grace. Amen

Spies or Pilgrims

Gen 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

A pilgrim is a person who journeys, especially from a long distance, to some place as an act of obedience. The pilgrim has his homeland and does not disguise his identity. He has an assignment and will return after the assignment … in many ways he is like an ambassador.

A spy is different. First, he hides his true identity and not just identity but most importantly his mission. He partakes in everything that other citizens partake in as though he were like them and blends. None identifies him as different.

But a pilgrim looks different. He has no agenda but to bless the place he visits, often bringing gifts and offerings from his homeland. But a spy is a secret destroyer. Which are you? Some say neither. The one that is lukewarm … is useless for both purposes in that he neither represents the homeland of the pilgrim as he should nor is he effective as a spy, perhaps because in some ways he is too easy to spot. In many cases, he weakens the resolve and zeal of other pilgrims who begin to relax their peculiarity and begin to copy the lukewarm. Spies are eventually caught and executed or retire in the home of the destroyer – Satan which the Bible says is hell fire.

Pilgrims also have their own place of retirement – in a blissful eternity. Are you a pilgrim? I pray you are not a spy. When He sent spies to look at the promised land of Canaan, the majority brought back an evil report. The pilgrims live by faith.

Song.

The Church from her dear Master

Received the gift divine,

And still that light she lifteth

O’er all the earth to shine.

It is the golden casket

Where gems of truth are stored;

It is the heav’n-drawn picture

Of Christ, the living Word.

It floateth like a banner

Before God’s host unfurled;

It shineth like a beacon

Above the darkling world.

It is the chart and compass

That o’er life’s surging sea,

‘Mid mists and rocks and quicksands,

Still guides, O Christ, to Thee.

O make Thy Church, dear Savior,

A lamp of purest gold,

To bear before the nations

Thy true light, as of old.

O teach thy wand’ring pilgrims

By this their path to trace,

Till, clouds and darkness ended,

They see Thee face to face.

Prayer: O Lord, am I a spy or a pilgrim … speak to my heart ? Amen

Pass your Test

Gen 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

What would you do if you were connected to all power and the greatest might? Would you use this connection to do more good and obey God or would you have your own agenda? Would you forgive your enemies and pray for those who curse you or will you embark on a journey of revenge? Would you be as harmless as a dove or would you oppress the harmless? These questions do not have obvious answers.

Indeed, as many things will not be revealed till the end, we are warned to test every spirit … whether they be of God. Many have come to the kingdom for salvation because they need help. There is nothing wrong with this. But who is of God and who is not – is known to God and is not be known to even us and others. The Bible warns of great betrayals of faith in the last days. Spies will be revealed.

Who are spies? Spies have another hidden master who has given them instructions on how to infiltrate the camp. Satan understands the Church and has observed people for centuries. His spies know what to do … how to sing the songs and talk the talk. But they cannot stand the heat. Spies have infiltrated the body of Christ, offering all sorts of placebos to soothe Christians and balms that make people feel good but without salvation. Spies have risen to high levels of authority, and have been lifted high in the Church by mortals. Many will be shown to be spies at the appointed time.

Spies want to know the weakness of the Kingdom, so that temptations can be fashioned in the pits of hell to bring you down. We must be cautious and guard our tongues. Out testimonies sometimes are not ripe to be shared because of spies. The enemy is not omniscient and he must infiltrate and come close to obtain information to destroy us. The Bible therefore has the answer – test every spirit. All – without exception … whether in leaders or in young Christians. We are not told to test the spirit in new converts only. All spirits. God will help you to stand and remain standing. When tested, do not be offended. Simply pass your test.

Song.

I need thee ev’ry hour,

Stay thou near by;

Temptations lose their pow’r

When thou art nigh.

I need thee, Oh I need thee

Every hour I need thee!

O bless me now my Savior,

I come to thee.

Prayer: O Lord, teach me to pass all the tests before me. Prove me and let it be known that I am truly yours. Amen

The Nation Awaits the Generation that will do the Work

Disputes over who will lead, and how they will rule , for how long and how resources will be shared can be so engaging that we can mistake this for progress.  But the Bible warns about noisy twittering and fanciful pleasures  that are the pillars of the slothful and foolish.

Pro 6:6  Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7  Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8  Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

The ant is a silent worker but an effective builder, collaborating without strife  – with minimal supervision.  When we observe developed cities and admire working rail, underground metro, domestic gas networks, good roads … we can forget that these were all built and continue to be maintained – until you take a leisurely stroll and note continued repairs, construction and maintenance of pipes, roads, wiring and infrastructure going on quietly.  We soon understand that there are institutions that propel order and ordain a quiet and disciplined industry that guarantees a future thriving civilization of “ants”.   The ant works quietly to gather provisions in the hot summer, preparing for the supplies that will sustain it through its winter seasons.  We learn from the ant that our industry today defines our rest and survival for tomorrow.  We are enjoying or paying  for our actions over previous decades and what we do today determines the tomorrow of our nations.

In life, we provide for death; in time we provide for eternity … how we deal with today’s trials will determine outcomes of future judgments.  In summer the weather is warm and ideal for rest …it is too sweaty to work, yet the ant works not for pleasure.  The grasshoppers sing and dance noisily from place to place in the summer …they enjoy the fun in the sun but they will all perish in the winter.  The ant on the other hand has a collaborative culture  of hard work (not talk and song) that stores for a future generation without being pushed or governed to do so.  There are some broad points.

Government, supervision and regulation can be over-sized, burdensome  and though with good intentions,  these will need to self-destruct or downsized significantly in many areas before any meaningful good can happen.  People instinctively do not need to be governed to thrive. Models embracing small government, privatization and lean purposeful oversight structures enable better quality institutions and productivity  over  time.
Underground metro lines, electricity distribution networks, gas pipelines and monetary /other institutions do not just happen, they are built through sustained disciplined efforts.  A nation that prefers strong-men to institutions will soon discover that superior de-bottlenecked processes that motivate industry in the populace goes much farther than a super genius pushing the best ideas.
Excess debate, taskforces and repetitive unproductive planning are like the cheap songs of the grasshopper.  The cupboards of many regimes are full of excellent reports.  A small bridge built over a pond in a village is of far more value than a fantastic  but unimplemented city-of-the-future..  Implementation is always the bane of the best initiatives  …and good implementation of few imperfect ideas takes us much farther ahead.
The grasshopper perishes in the winter not because it has good or bad leaders but because the work that should be done was not done. No one reengineered, none built, no one stored because it was too difficult and uncomfortable and troubling to do so. Leaving the status quo as-is guarantees the expiration of the grasshopper. The grasshopper is engaged with many other silly things.  To change our nation … we (not just leaders) must completely reexamine the things that engage our time.
The work never disappears… rather it waits for the generation ready to build the infrastructure.  It does not matter that the grasshopper  prefers to prance about in the bountiful summer like she had it all …she will still come to the realization that the work that should have been done was not albeit that it is already too late. King Solomon warns that winter seasons come to all … both ant and grasshopper. Every nation is occasionally struck by adverse winds and cycles threatening  resources.

The ant survives because it has a culture lavish in silent hard work and industry in building to guarantee tomorrow.  There is no time for disputes or songs of self-praise because the ant senses the urgency to preserve itself for the future.  The grasshopper generation is not just noisy, but cannot and will not build anything because it just does not seem necessary …rather noisy chirping, talk, and mirthful entertainment to enjoy the summer fills its days.

Even if billions of dollars are poured  by foreign investors into a grasshopper generation that does not believe in work and robust fair institutions, they will still stupefy the ant in the wastage as most of it seeps through the leakages into pipes that transport the funds to offshore havens designed uniquely for the slothful grasshopper.

The winter tests the robustness of institutions and the adequacy of storage.  The nations that are like the quiet ant that built and stored actually get stronger in the winter as the wasters will come to them with their last savings which quickly dissipates.   May God help us to  “ go to the ant…”

A.W. Tozer said … “Our strength and safety lie not in noise, but in silence.”
