Chapter One - Bed, Breakfast, and You!

Picture The release of Bed, Breakfast, and You is right around the corner. As in ONE WEEK AWAY! YAY! Be on the look out on May 3rd!
* * * *
Claire holds the keys to her future, in more than one way.

As if the recent death of Claire Stevens’ parents isn’t enough, someone wants to steal Honeycreek Bed and Breakfast right out from under her. But Claire isn’t about to roll over and let them. She’s prepared to fight.

Jace Brown is Brookfield’s main attorney, and after delivering the bad news to Claire about her property, he knows all about being on her bad side.

As Claire gets to the bottom of this scandal, she’s surprised to have Jace by her side, fighting along with her. The attraction is instant, but can it last after the dust settles?
Chapter One Jace pulled up to Honeycreek Bed and Breakfast. He sat in his car a few moments, gazing at the land as the sun set. A lake was nuzzled next to the main building. He assumed this place got its name from the small pond. Several small cabins were nestled around the water. At one time, this inn had been the place to stay. But unfortunately, the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, passed away six months before. They left the business to their daughter and rumor had it, she was back in town and staying there. Only he was coming here tonight to deliver bad news. He typically had someone who did this for him, but they’d recently quit—leaving him to do the dirty parts.

After he exited the vehicle, he quietly shut the door. He held the manila envelope in his hand a little too tight. Taking a deep breath, he climbed the wood steps and paused in front of the door. He remembered Claire Stevens very well. She was a petite blonde with a temper to go along. But if memory served him right, she had been gorgeous as well. She’d been in Brookfield’s pageants and always won. Claire had a smile that could knock anyone dead and a killer body. She’d gone away for college and he hadn’t seen her since—until now.

Jace knocked on the door then stood back. He waited a minute before he knocked again. Was she not here? He stepped off the porch and saw a red sedan parked to the side. Right about now it would be nice to have a number. He sighed with frustration and walked back toward his car, kicking the rock gravel on his way.

“Someone does not look happy,” a female said with amusement.

Jace glanced up and saw her approaching him from the direction of the cabins.

“What can I do for you?” she asked.

“Claire Stevens, man, you haven’t changed a bit.”

She cocked her head to the side and flashed her winning smile. “Thanks, but do I know you?”

“Jace Brown. I was a few years ahead of you in school.”

“Ah, well, Jace Brown, what is it I can do for you?”

He cleared his throat as he stared at the bombshell before him. “I’m actually here about this place.”

“Oh yeah. I figured someone would be showing up before long with paperwork for me to sign since this place is all mine.”

“That’s sorta why I’m here.” He’d never felt so flustered to give someone bad news. He motioned toward the Inn. “Can we go inside and sit?”

“Not in there. I’m staying in a cabin. I can’t bear to sleep in there. The loss of my parents is still too fresh.”

“Understandable.”

“Follow me.” She spun around and trotted toward her place.

Jace’s eyes were glued to her behind. She wore dark jeans that hugged her in all the right ways. As she went up the steps, he was worried he might spring free from his own pants. He wiggled slightly, trying to hide the erection that was beginning. Claire didn’t seem to notice.

She pointed at a couch and he took a seat.

“Would you like anything to drink?”

He’d love to sit and play catch up, but he knew once he gave this bad news to Claire, she’d kick him out. “I’m fine.”

She shrugged and tossed her locks behind her shoulders. The cabin was small and consisted of a living area, an eat-in kitchen, and a doorway he assumed led to a bedroom. It had probably been at one time a designated cabin for the couple looking to escape the every days of life and get lost with one another.

She returned with what he assumed was a cup of coffee and took a seat in the chair directly in front of him.

“I’d like to say first I’m sorry about the loss of your parents.”

“Thanks, it’s still so weird they aren’t here. I hadn’t expected to be so young when I lost them. I thought I’d be married and have kids.” She took a sip of her drink. “But that’s life, I suppose. You never know what tomorrow is going to bring.”

“You’re right.”

“So, what’s in that envelope you’re clutching so tightly? The deed or something?”

He took a deep breath and handed it to her. “Unfortunately, no.”

Claire held the envelope and stared at him. “What do you mean? They owned this place. It’s been paid for.”

“You’re correct about that.”

“Then what? Tell me.”

“They haven’t paid taxes in several years. And with their death and the back taxes owed, this property is in line to go to auction. Unless you pay the back taxes.”

“What? Are you kidding me?” She tore the envelope open and pulled out the papers. She was silent as she skimmed through the documents.

Jace knew the numbers she was looking at and it would be a miracle for her to be able to save the place alone. He hated this part of his job and he supposed this was why it was so hard to keep his assistants. Giving folks this type of bad news was hard.

Claire set the papers down on the table beside her. “I need time. This can’t be right. I know this isn’t right.”

Jace nodded. “I understand. But you don’t have long.”

“No crap.” She crossed her arms. “Thirty days. I read it. Just know one thing. I’m not losing this place. I grew up here and I plan to run this place until God takes me home one day as well.”

“I hope so.”

Claire drank from her mug again and then said, “Anything else, Mr. Brown?”

“No. My phone number is in there if you have any questions.”

“Then I guess you’re welcome to go.”

Jace stood and watched her a moment. But she said nothing else, just stared down at the papers in front of her. He let himself out and as he walked back toward his car, he decided he needed to get an ad in the Brookfield paper pronto for a new assistant. He didn’t want to do this again.

* * *

This couldn’t be right. Absolutely not.

Claire pulled the cell phone from her back pocket, but then stared at the blank screen. Who was she going to call? She’d only been back in town a short while. Sure, she could call her friend Seth Hampton, the sheriff, but he had bigger problems than this. He had a town to run.

She placed the phone down on the table next to the papers, then propped her face in her hands and stared at what was in front of her. The amount her parents owed didn’t make sense. There had to be something else going on and she was going to get to the bottom of it. She needed to get into their office and have a look around. And perhaps calling Seth wasn’t that bad an idea. With his help, they’d have this solved in no time. And Honeycreek would once again be open.

Sinful Saturday - A sneak peek into Bed, Breakfast, and You!

Happy Saturday! Today I am sharing a small sneak peek into Bed, Breakfast, and You. The next story in the Brookfield Series.
Jace broke the kiss momentarily to trail a kiss down her neck to her collarbone, giving himself a peek at what she had inside her shirt. Damn, she had a full set and his tongue begged to taste. To dip down and lick between her breasts. Claire must have sensed how he was feeling. She pulled his face back to hers. And then she spoke and nearly gave him a heart attack.

“I think we should go back to my place and sleep together.”

Picture Did you enjoy? This one should be hitting eShelves in May!

The Negative Bug Has Struck!

Picture I've been bitten by the negative bug. And I imagine the little bugger looks a bit like that nasty thing.

For the past 2 weeks, I have been down on myself and everything else. I've been getting my feelings hurt easily, and been trying to figure a way to climb out of this rut. And it isn't working. *Sigh*

My house is a mess and today I want to clean it. Maybe if I can put it back together the way I like, I can start to feel better. But let's be honest, it isn't the house that is making me so cranky. It's something else. And I wish I knew what it was. This last week I decided to redesign all the Brookfield Series covers. I wanted something that matched and I had a vision for what I wanted and decided to give it a go myself and design them. And I'm pretty proud of them. I had hoped that would spark my mood to feeling better. Pretty new covers that I did myself!  Nope

I have a revise and resubmit hanging over my head and trying to find the desire to work on it, but its hard because I love the story just the way it is. So I've been trying to decide if I should attempt to or not. :/ And to be honest, that revise and resubmit might be a good chunk of my foul mood. You see, it isn't just a little work, but i good chunk of work that was requested. And it's hard when its your work you've completed and you have to figure out how to change it. Oh, and did I mention it's a full-length. *sigh*

In my foul mood days I even went shopping. Yes, RETAIL THERAPY. And can you believe new clothes didn't lighten my mood. Perhaps if I had gone down a pant size it might have. :)

But you know what, foul moods are a part of life. And we have to keep paddling to get back to Positive City. Which might I add is the next stop listed for me. I just have to get through these miles of Negative Trail.

Happy Monday folks! Today I am feeling the Monday blues. Maybe I should skip cleaning and just go back to bed!

Pets in Books

When reading a story, do you enjoy when one of the characters has a pet? Do you feel like it adds to the story?

I love adding pets to my books. A majority of my books have one in it somehow and I try to have the pet throughout the story. Some a little more than usual. And each pet is based off a pet I know or have.

Moxy from Amber's Muse - my dear friend had just gotten her own puppy Boston terrier. And the puppy was so cute and energetic. It was perfect for the story.

Toby from Accidental Love - I have a lab myself and we had just finished dog training when I wrote this one, adding bits and pieces of things I had learned.

And if there has been a cat in the story, you better believe its one I have already - since I have six cats. I love reading stories with pets in it. I feel like it can add so much to a story, big or small. Pets add humor. The online book club I am in, we recently read The Best Man by Kristen Higgins. A golden retriever was featured though out this story. And Blue (the dog) really added some laugh out loud moments.

Not to be too picky, but if you're going to add a pet, they've got to have some personality to be memorable.

Got a favorite pet from a story? Picture This is Zoey, you'll meet her in NOT JUST FRIENDS (Brookfield 3)

Sinful Saturday - Not Just Friends

Happy Saturday and thank you for stopping by for Sinful Saturday. This is a weekly meme where authors share 7-10 sentences from a release or work in progress. Clicking the sexy photo below will take you to thehost site.

My sentences are coming from NOT JUST FRIENDS, the third story in the Brookfield Series. Picture
Did she want him to kiss her? Her eyes were locked on his. He noticed her breathing had quickened. She did want him to kiss her. He moistened his own lips and took a step toward her.

Alyssa also moved closer. Connor reached out and placed a hand on her tiny waist. Her mouth parted and his heart rate sped up. To kiss Alyssa would be memorable. He inhaled her flowery scent and panic set in. He couldn’t kiss her, not yet. He was too scared and he’d never been scared to kiss a woman.

Never Stop Reading #wwow

Picture Are you a writer? Then you must be a reader too, right? RIGHT!

Reading a book is like studying for a test. Sit down with one of your favorite authors and as you read it, study it. How did the author describe the heroine and hero's first kiss. Can you learn anything from it? YES!

Often times when I finish the first draft of a book, I like to go on a reading binge. Spend a week devouring books in the related genre, that way when I go to tackle draft two, I'm ready to expand. I'm ready to develope my stories to their fullest potential. Picture Besides reading romance novels, I also like to pick up marketing books and others that are related to the industry. I love reading books fellow authors put together with their tips on how they are doing it.

Recently a fellow author shared this book with me, The Emotion Thesaurus. The author recommended it highly as well as several other authors. I picked it up, and I muse agree, its a great writer's companion.

Never stop reading. You'd be amazed how much you can learn by reading. Just do your best to enjoy the story too. Sometimes I spend too much time studying the authors craft, I forget about the awesome story! For More Wisdom: #WWOW or Writers Word of Wisdom - A Smart & Savvy Group of Authors who write a weekly feature for their blog -Writer's Words of Wisdom- each Wednesday. The goal is to impart what we've learned about writing, editing, getting published, book promotion, and more along the way.

Sunday Sexy Snippets #sexysnippets  Not Just Friends #romance

Picture It's Sunday again and time to share with you 7 sexy sentences. This week I am going to share 7 more from Not Just Friends again. These aren't really sexy, but funny. I think it might be my favorite lines from the whole book--maybe. There is a lot of humor. :)

Connor reached out, touching her shoulder. “Do we have a deal?”

Oh God, she was supposed to speak. She wasn’t sure that part of her was working any longer. “Uh-huh.”

Connor grinned at her, a dimple forming on his cheek. “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?”

No, a cat did not have her tongue. In fact, if a cat did, she was pretty sure she’d be screaming right about now, not being mute.
Picture Can the quiet bookstore owner land the playboy?

Alyssa Duncan’s life revolves around books. If not for the fact the town’s playboy Connor Phillips has a secret reading addiction, she most likely wouldn’t be on his radar…or his friend.  The two personalities just don’t mesh…or do they? She gets a chance to find out when a book-reading bet leads to dinner. Alyssa experiences a wide a range of emotions. She’s elated her beyond-friendship feelings seem returned, but his reputation precedes him. Is she just another gullible female in a string of women? As a relationship begins to develop with Connor, going past the limits of friendship, things grow muddled and complicated when an ex-boyfriend shows up in town and things aren’t what they seem.

When the dust finally settles, will Alyssa find true love with someone or end up with just another friend?
