Of Mangoes and Radium: Cooking the Books with Brooke Bolander

[image error]Macmillan | Barnes & Noble | Indiebound

Brooke Bolander first captured our attention with the gorgeous short story “Her Words Like Hunting Vixens Spring” (2012, Lightspeed) and she hasn’t let it go since. Now with vivid stories like And You Shall Know Her By Her Trail of Dead, Our Talons Can Crush Galaxies, and Sundogs (to name a few) under her belt, Brooke’s novella, “The Only Harmless Great Thing” has arrived in glowing fashion. It’s a stunningly mesmerizing work and we’re so pleased to hav...

An Incomplete List of Great Reads from Others – 2017 edition & Things I’m Grateful to Have Worked On

This fall has been a blur. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to see so many of you on the road (there was a lot of road!). Now that the northeast is turning cold, I’m hibernating for a bit — resting, writing, recombobulating, and recuperating. I’m actually trying to mostly stay off social media (with the exception of some photos & sketches now and then) through the holidays.

So I’ve got reading suggestions for you early – both mine and others. Whether you’re a SFWA member or not, you shou...

Book Bites: Eric Scott Fischl

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

Eric Scott Fischl joins BookBites today fresh off his debut week from Angry Robot!

I live in the mountains of western Montana, where my latest book, The Trials of Solomon Parker is set. A lot of people hunt and fish here; the outdoor lifestyle is of one of those Montana Things. While I personally am not a hunter, I’m an omnivore and a food nerd. Red meat doesn’t m...

The Stitch of Story – Cooking the Books with Carmen Maria Machado

Carmen Maria Machado‘s short stories and essays grab the heart and the ear, the eye and the brain. They seam and sing. They steam.  Her first short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties (Greywolf Press 2017) is out this week, already making All the Lists, and Aliette and I feel so lucky to have Carmen visit to talk about food and fiction today!

It’s all  for Cooking the Books this month, both here and at the extension kitchen over at The Booksmugglers! (check out Carmen’s Booksmugglers...

Book Bites: A Common Motif – with Joyce Chng

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

Joyce Chng came to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (which is an excellent blend of the academic and the fantastic) a few years ago and speaking with her in the early morning hours was a delight. I’m so glad she’s returned to talk about food as a theme in her work. Thanks so much, Joyce, for coming back to visit!

New Short Story up at Uncanny Magazine ~ and ~ Cloudbound Paperback out today!

There’s a lot of things going on and I’m just back from Dragoncon, so I’ll update more with the newsletter shortly (as soon as I find my charging cable).

MEANTIME.

I have a new story up online today. I’m still trying to find ways to write about it, so you’ll probably hear more on this topic in the now-and-then.

The story is called “Clearly Lettered in a Mostly Steady Hand,” and  I’m so grateful to Michael Damian Thomas, Lynne Marie Thomas, Michi Trota, the crew at Uncanny Magazine, and all of...

The Importance of Tangerines: Cooking the Books with Yoon Ha Lee

[image error]Amazon | Rebellion StoreThis is the podcast in which we try not to fangirl. (That’s all of the podcasts, actually.)

We failed. (Ok I failed, Aliette asked excellent questions from her berth as an instructor on the Writing Excuses cruise and I just … well, you’ll see.)

Yoon Ha Lee’s first collection, Conservation of Shadows, and his short stories at Tor.com, Lightspeed, Beneath Ceaseless Skies and more, have been favorites for a long time. When Ninefox Gambit came out last year, I was hooked,...
