The Museum of Errant Critters goes a little wild

So. Funny story.

A couple of weeks ago, Chuck Wendig (he of the bees) let me post my Museum of Errant Critters sketches and care/feeding instructions on his blog.

And then I got an idea. I’m commuting to Kickstarter this summer, helping with their Summer of Poetry, and I thought “hey, I should learn how this Kickstarter stuff works.”

I built a mini-campaign — a short one, only 7 days long — hoping to fund Museum of Errant Critter postcards, and maybe more (I really want to do a booklet, somed...

Book Bites: R.F. Kuang and The Poppy War

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

R.F. Kuang is one of the nicest people to write about opium and implements of destruction I know. Her book, The Poppy War, comes out today!! (May 1) from Harper Voyager, and is the first installment in a Chinese-history inspired epic fantasy trilogy about empire, warfare, shamanism, and opium. War orphan Runin Fang gets out of an arranged marriage by testing into t...

Dad Jokes Rock: Cooking the Books with Eric Smith and The Girl And the Grove

[image error]Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Indiebound

I’ve walked so many of the paths in The Girl And the Grove (Flux Books, May 2018) from Fairmount Park to Kelly Drive and now I’m slightly disappointed I’ve yet to see either an owl or a dryad.

That’s because this YA novel is filled with the people and places of my hometown.

So I was thrilled when Eric Smith found time to join us for Cooking the Books this month and talk about his latest novel, his anthology Welcome Home, nurturing kids, and… what dryads ea...

Book Bites: Jack McDevitt and The Long Sunset

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

I first met Jack McDevitt at the Chicago Worldcon when he was the Pro and I was the Neo-Pro in the writers workshop. He was kind, funny, and a brilliant teacher. This Nebula, John W. Cambell, and Locus award-winner for his novels is a joy and a delight and I’m so glad to see a new Academy book from him, The Long Sunset out this month from Saga Press.

Jack joins Boo...

A Complete Shock & Honor

When my short story, “Clearly Lettered in a Mostly Steady Hand,” came out in Uncanny Magazine last fall, I felt so nervous.

[image error]This was a very different kind of story for me, and an uncomfortable one to write. In order to write it, I had to peel back some of me that hides the edges, the angry parts, the unfinished bits. I’d spent a long time covering those over, so I’d fit in better.

Cut to the past few weeks, as I’ve learned that the story is a finalist for several awards. I’m still nervous! I’...

Four Links, Four Upcoming Events, plus a T-rex & Photos

[image error]At Powell’s. You must be this tall to read this book… (not really!)

Hello friends, it’s been a while! Time to catch up. I’m working on a bunch of different projects, drawing a lot, and still trying to be on hiatus from social media (that’s going… um… about as well as you might expect but I’m still trying), and I’m very much author-only at the book of face, in case you’re wondering where I went over there. How about you?

Coming soon: Aliette and I have exciting Cooking the Books interviews lin...

Schadenfreude Burrito: Cooking the Books With John Scalzi

[image error] [image error]John Scalzi: Man of international mystery, burritos, and pie? OR fleet-footed author of over thirty books on writing, spaaaaace, and the future?

Either guess is correct.

What do you win? You win the latest episode of Cooking the Books, an interview with John Scalzi — where co-host Aliette de Bodard and I talk with him about writing during tough times, the importance of lawn care equipment, and burritos, bacon, and pie.

It’s all  for Cooking the Books this month, both here and at the extensio...
