Teaching Riverland

Over the past eight weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to be back in the classroom, talking to students in grades five through nine, plus — in a different way — to college students and workshop attendees.

[image error](that’s me, the tiny figure to the bottom right of the giant screen!)

We’ve talked about becoming a writer, about revision, about writing scary stories and we’ve made (and deconstructed) monsters. We’ve discussed themes and metaphor, and looked at storytelling maps.

Notes to My 12-year-old Self

You will be believed.

You are not broken.

These are messages a much younger me needed to hear, and didn’t, until far later in my life.

For twelve year old me, and for others in similar situations, I wrote those feelings into my own book, Riverland a portal fantasy about domestic violence for middle grade readers.

Riverland is about sisters who learn to become the heroes of their own story. Who begin to understand that there is good anger and bad anger, and that learning the difference is mo...

9 Days To Go, Links To Events, Glass Magic, & A Draft Reading Guide for Riverland

[image error] (whoo this post got long. I put a new-to-you photo at the bottom as a reward.)

Back in 2016, I didn’t think I could write a book like Riverland. Before that, I knew I never would. Then, in 2016 and 2017, I did (over and over again) — with the help and encouragement of many. … I rewrote it until I could tell Eleanor and Mike’s story in a way that was real and true.

In a little over a week, Riverland goes out in the world — my first middle grade novel. A portal fantasy about stories and siste...

Edible Flowers and Occasional Poison : Cooking the Books with Arkady Martine

[image error]Indiebound | Barnes & Noble | Amazon

When Arkady Martine sets out to do a thing, she does it completely and thoroughly. That’s true whether she’s running an academic conference on Byzantium or creating an entirely new universe and an exquisitely intricate space opera to go in it. A Memory Called Empire is just such a narrative within such a universe, and we’re delighted that Arkady was able to join the first Cooking the Books of the year to discuss everything, from the menus (along with food...

Everything at Once: Riverland Preorder Goodness and Launch Party! His Hideous Heart Cover! Fire Opal Arcs!

Hello from the slow-zone (WiFi-wise) on the Olympic Peninsula of western Washington State!

I’m out here finishing a massive novel revision, and I see that a whole *bunch* of things are going online today, so let me share them with you… if the creek doesn’t rise (there really is a creek) and the wifi holds out (very doubtful)!

First — and most importantly — we have a launch party date and preorder finery for Riverland. I’m equal parts terrified, excited, and nervous for my Middle Grade debut...

Six – Wait! EIGHT things make a post: Riverland Reviews, Ninth Step Station Launch, Rhysling & BFSA nominations, Fire Opal Cover, A Catalog of Storms…

(seriously, this week has been a little nuts with all! the! things! happening all at the same time — I have a tendency to work through stressful periods, and this has been a lot of work that all decided to launch at the same time! SO. Here we go!)

Riverland reviews and blurbs are starting to appear… a few at a time! It’s getting exciting but I’m also a tiny bit (ok a LOT) nervous about this book being out in the world. It is the hardest, most personal thing I’ve ever done in fiction and pret...
