What I’ve Read & Loved (not by me) – early 2018

I’ve been doing reading posts for a long time. Originally, they were bi-monthly, then quarterly, and now, on the public blog, I’m trying for bi-annually.

I keep a reading journal (an example pictured below) and I also post short takes on Patreon each month about what I’m reading, including advance reads and blurbs. (If you’re interested in more frequent updates, with more stories, jump on the Patreon.)

Book Bites: Latchkey and Nicole Kornher Stace

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

Nicole Kornher Stace’s Archivist Wasp was breathtaking and her sequel, Latchkey vividly asks so many of the right questions about what memories linger after an apocalypse, for worse and for better.  I was delighted when Nicole said she’d like to share a post about writing fuel. (Oh, sibling of my heart regarding coffee.) Welcome, Nicole!

An AMA About Creativity, the Infinity’s End Anthology, and my Readercon Schedule!

A Wilde AMA Appears!

[image error]During a D.rip/Kickstarter AMA, I talked about writing, the differences and similarities between poetry and fiction, and the process of spinning plates.

Do you remember the first thing you ever wrote and loved?

I remember very clearly the first time a line felt “finished” — it made a sound like a bell in my head. It was the original first line to my first novel, Updraft“On a morning like this, fear is a blue sky emptied of birds.”

Since then, I really listen for that b...

Book Bites: Alex R. White and A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

[image error]Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iTunes |Indiebound | Powells

I met Alex White a few years ago at World Fantasy, Columbus, when their fab agent Connor Goldsmith introduced us. Even then, they had the universe on their mind. This super-smart person contains multitudes, and a part of that — their new novel — is headed to bookshelves this week.

I’m so glad Alex is joi...

The Happenings at Kickstarter this Summer

[image error] So a few weeks ago, I ran a very fast mini-kickstarter called The Museum of Errant Critters — and yesterday I mailed off

[image error]the last of the backer rewards. It was an amazing experience, and I met so many people while doing it and learned so many things (for instance: I am bad with tape, I can actually still math a production budget, I LIKE doing this! I can do PR for myself for exactly 5 days before expiring of embarrassment).

It is part of the Kickstarter Creators in Residence residency that I...

Re-envisioning Connectivity

I started this wordpress blog in early 2011. Before that, I’d kept other online journals & blogs, including a whole set of travel archives. I joined Facebook in 2007 and twitter sometime around there too, around the halfway mark in my programming & multimedia/game dev career.

Throughout it all, I’ve used social media to connect, to think, to dream — along with so many people I’ve grown to know and adore, particularly online. And over the years as platforms have shifted, changed, devolved, and...

How to Feed Magic: Cooking the Books with Chelsea Polk

[image error]Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Macmillan

Chelsea Polk‘s glorious debut novel, Witchmark, from Tor.com Publishing and Tor Books is almost here. Still time to preorder!

In Witchmark, an alternate post-War world has magic and sibling rivalries, a beautiful romance, and so many bicycles. It’s also filled with food — apples in particular, but other foods as well.

So when Chelsea Polk was able to speak with us for Cooking the Books from her home in Alberta, Canada, I was delighted. She also answered que...

Stellar

Last night at the Nebulas was such a good reminder of why we do this. So was the entire Nebula ballot this year, and the long list.

I am so happy Rebecca Roanhorse won in our short story category for “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience TM”. Her speech was amazing, and you can read her fantastic story here.

Sounds strange, right? My own story, “Clearly Lettered in a Mostly Steady Hand,” didn’t win this time – and you know what, that’s ok. People saw the story and got what I wanted to...
