An Incomplete List of What I Read & Loved This Year and What I Wrote – 2018 Edition

Hello! Each year for nearly a decade, I’ve posted mostly bi-annual lists (this one’s from July) of some of my reading, as well as projects I’ve worked on. It gives me a chance to look back at the year, my reading and work, and what has struck me as especially powerful. This is the final 2018 version — however, the list is, as always, incomplete, sometimes spelled funny, and not in any order except category…*

(*Want to see more complete deep lists? Be a patreon for $1 a month or more and my re...

Lots of Links: Resist! Anthology, Serial Box News, World Fantasy, & What the Heck Happened to October

It’s hard to encapsulate the events of the past month, and impossible to separate them from the political timeline. My heart hurts, I feel yet another wave of incredible loss and sadness, and I am resolved to participate, to continue to speak up, engage, and to engage with my communities.

One of the pieces of work I’m very proud of along those lines is the Resist! Anthology, proceeds from which support the ACLU.

Candied Ginger and Ghost Eagles: Cooking the Books with Alex London (& Family!)

Alexander London‘s first young adult novel, Proxy, blew me away. His middle grade books are wonderful.

And now the newest addition to the London library, Black Wings Beating hits the Cooking the Books crew right in the feels with its giant murderbirds and amazing world building!

(PS: what made this interview especially exciting was the gargantuan feat of not getting distracted by the adorable Baby London… who you might hear cooing in the background. It was...

Current Timeline Distractions: New Gemworld Story + Updraft on Sale + Fearless Women Pack

Wow it’s been quite a year… I meant a week. Or a few days at least. Or maybe time has just stopped. If you need a distraction from the current timeline, I have a few: [image error] My first new Gemworld story to appear at Beneath Ceaseless Skies in three years is “Ruby, Singing” — it’s free to read, full of singing & murder, and free to share (*please do!*) — I hope you enjoy it. (The podcast, narrated by Tina Connolly, is gorgeous. Have a listen.) And come see me read from the story at the BCS 10th A...

Secret Messages: Cooking the Books with Lauren Teffeau and IMPLANTED

[image error] Angry Robot | Amazon.com | Apple Books | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | IndieBound | Goodreads

Author Lauren Teffeau’s Implanted debuted just before worldcon in San Jose, and she’s been journeying far and wide to talk about her high-tech science fiction novel.

(confession: Lauren keeps me and my hatch green chiles habit happy, plus I blurbed Implanted, so I’m a little biased about this book and this author. Both are fantastic.)

My co-host Aliette and I finally found time to sit down and...

Book Bites: Amber Royer & Free Chocolate

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

I met Amber Royer at WorlCon this year, and she’s got a book out with Angry Robot, called Free Chocolate. (You can read about it at Barnes & Noble) And here’s Amber to tell us more:

[image error]In Free Chocolate, a goodly amount of chocolate is grown, stolen, consumed, processed, hijacked, obsessed over, ruined, melted, gifted, dipped, dripped and baked. Not necessarily in th...

A Taste of Light: Cooking the Books with Jeannette Ng

[image error]Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng arose earlier this year from Angry Robot Press and my Cooking the Books co-host Aliette de Bodard and I have been working to catch the author ever since.

We’re so glad to have found a time to do so — the conversation took place over three continents, in between several major conferences, and it ranges all over. We hope you enjoy the banquet of topics set forward – from masquerades to vast wastes of ice and frozen holidays; from the familiar to those thi...

A (new book cover reveal) Bunch of Links (& excerpt) Make a Post …

[image error] The Nebula Awards Showcase Annual is out! The 2018 Edition contains so many great stories, including an excerpt from The Jewel and Her Lapidary – a 2017 Nebula Nominee. You can read more here!

Over at Clarkesworld, I wrote about keeping time (and a lot of different ways to do that). Witness my ability to repurpose my short story research for “The Synchronist” as a meditation on loss and writing… if you dare.

*
Also I wrote a middle grade novel – my first.

[image error]It’s coming out next April from Ab...

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

I’m slammed on deadlines, so please accept many apologies that this is a little late. And hey! It’s a new Book Bite! This time from author Claire O’Dell! Welcome, Claire, and thank you for Sarah’s delicious recipe!

Claire O’Dell writes:
