Question 1.
Please introduce yourself!

I am Duru and I usually make the overall decisions on the directions of technology and development.

I am Dong-geun You and my role is to develop in detail the decisions made by Duru.

Hi! I am Soyeon and I am a front-end and back-end developer.

I am Doyun. I’ve joined the Engineering Team most recently 🙂

Question 2.
What TTMIK website / TTMIK:Audio app features do you want to introduce?

I’d like to introduce the notification feature on the website. You get notifications when a new course is added or you complete a course.

I want to introduce ‘Sitemap’ & ‘Course Map’ which were added a long time ago but have been continuously updated. If you are not sure how to learn Korean on our website, these features will help you!

I recommend exploring our landing page which has been recently redesigned and looks pretty. The quizzes that are updated every month are also very fun.
And if you scan the barcode on the TTMIK books using the TTMIK: Audio app, they are automatically added to ‘My Books’. It feels like a personal library and you can also listen to the audio tracks or watch videos! It’s super convenient and good.

I recommend the selection guide on the Course page. Here you can find TTMIK’s recommendations based on your level or preference.

Question 3.
What do you usually do on the weekend or in your free time?

I spend a lot of time learning engineering skills or working on my side projects. These days I’m running a farm and growing sunflowers, Monstera and orange trees.

I read articles about development or hangout and chit chat with my friends playing VR games.

Question 4.
One thing that you like?

My husband. Yes, I am a person with a lot of love, hoho. I also like the trail around my place, good weather, coffee and animation movies that make me relax (like Disney movies or Crayon Shin Chan). I also listen to ASMR a lot.

I cannot pick one, so I’d say movies, soccer, music! I really love them all. So if you let me talk about them, I can even teach a class for the whole semester for each topic LOL.

Our team takes care of the whole process of publishing TTMIK books. It includes planning, writing, editing, proofreading and even printing!

Question 1.
Could you introduce yourselves?

I’m a person who follows their heart but not a person who blows hot and cold. So there are many things in my life that I’ve been putting my heart into for a long time.

I like learning new things. I’m learning tennis these days!

I like songs, paintings and sunshine. These days I’m really into fitness and working out.

I am a person who eats well, plays hard and sleeps hard. My hobby is daydreaming. There are so many interesting things in this world!

Question 2.
If you were to create a book which is not for learning Korean, what type of book would you want to create?

I think reading a book is much more fun than making one.^^

I want to make a novel that anyone can enjoy!

Essay collections with all my personal writings. A book that moves you through beautiful illustrations and short texts. A book that teaches conversation for other languages.

A poetry book, a chaotic-looking book with many different fonts, a picture book without any text.

Question 3.
Do you have any plans for a summer vacation?

No, I don’t have any plans yet. We can take time off anytime of the year unlike in some other companies in Korea. So I don’t usually go on vacation in summer when it’s peak season.

I have many plans; watching musicals, going to exhibitions and traveling with my friends. What I’m looking forward to the most is a family trip to Busan!

I like the ocean and swimsuits so I’ll spend as much time as possible in the ocean! I plan to take surfing lessons in Yangyang (I take a beginner class every year and it never gets old!), have a staycation in Gangneung, and go to Jeju.

Going to Ulleungdo, wakeboarding in Han River, traveling overseas, chilling by the beach/river/lake.

Question 4.
What are your favorite TTMIK books?

MY FIRST 500 KOREAN WORDS

Talk To Me In Korean
It’s the first vocabulary book we published and I really like its concept. I cannot wait to create a sequel!

Build & Extend Your Korean Sentences

This book teaches you how to extend your basic Korean sentences into longer ones. While writing this book, I even wished I could learn other languages with a book like this. Plus, it’s the first book that I published.

Our team helps our customers use the TTMIK website and products more easily and conveniently. We handle various inquiries about book delivery, membership subscription, and about using our website and app, and we try to solve the problems as quickly as possible. Also, we work with other teams to apply your valuable feedback and improve our website and products!

Question 1.
What do you do for fun?

I’m very much into dancing these days. In the past, I was really bad at dancing. Fortunately, I became more flexible and better at dancing by spending a lot of time playing the famous dancing game Just Dance.

I am into bouldering. I tend to lose interest quickly when doing the same kind of exercise often. But bouldering always inspires and challenges me. It’s fun to discuss how to solve a problem with others, and people are usually very supportive (even if they are strangers), so I really enjoy it.

I usually spend my free time watching movies. I especially like fantasy movies because they make me feel like I’ve traveled to a different world. My favorite is Harry Potter!

Question 2.
What is the most memorable customer inquiry?

I remember one customer sending me tattoo designs with Korean letters and asking me which one among them was the most natural. There were some unnatural sentences, so I changed them into more natural ones, which was a fun experience for me.

One day, I received an email from a customer who was visually impaired. They gave feedback on the format of our ebooks. According to the customer, there is a special program that automatically converts text into audio files for those who are visually impaired. However, the customer couldn’t study with our ebooks because the format was not supported by the program. I learned through this experience that we need to consider our customers’ needs in every aspect.

A memorable question was when someone asked us if our resources are suitable for children as well. I realized that so many people around the world, regardless of their age, are eager to learn Korean. It made me feel more responsible for my job.

Question 3.
Which TTMIK books do you recommend? And what’s the reason?

How To Sound Like A Native Korean Speaker

I heard many Korean learners find it hard to differentiate similar Korean sounds such as ‘가’ and ‘까’. However, with this book, you will learn to speak more naturally through detailed explanations and various images. Studying with our audio app will be the cherry on top!

How To Sound Like A Native Korean Speaker $29Add to cart

Korean Phrasebook For Travelers

I recommend “Korean Phrasebook For Travelers” because the book is practical. You can just pick any expression in the book and start a conversation when you meet someone in Korea. When you travel to Korea, if you carry this book with you and practice, you will gain confidence in speaking Korean very soon.

Korean Phrasebook For Travelers $20Add to cart

Have You Seen a Blue Jindo Dog?

It is an enjoyable picture book for grown-ups. And it’s even more fascinating when you read while listening to the story on our audio app!

What Are People Born in the Year of the Tiger Like?

Do you know your Korean horoscope?

People living in regions like Europe and the Americas commonly follow Western astrology signs categorizing people based on the day they were born. However, Korea’s horoscope, originating from ancient China, sorts people into 12 animal categories based on their birth year – Rat (쥐띠), Ox (소띠), Tiger (범띠 or 호랑이띠), Rabbit (토끼띠), Dragon (용띠), Snake (뱀띠), Horse (말띠), Sheep (양띠), Monkey (원숭이띠), Rooster (닭띠), Dog (개띠), and Pig (돼지띠). (The suffix ‘띠’ refers to zodiac type and is paired with an animal to create a full ‘Year of the ____’ phrase.)

Your Korean horoscope sign can be found by looking up which of these animals matches your Lunar birth year. If someone was born in 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, or 1926, they were born during the Year of the Tiger.

Want to learn Korean?

Talk To Me In Korean is here to help!

#text-2841073691 { font-size: 0.75rem; text-align: center; color: rgb(3, 13, 81);}#text-2841073691 > * { color: rgb(3, 13, 81);} Get Started #text-box-1583746820 { width: 90%;}#text-box-1583746820 .text-box-content { font-size: 100%;} #banner-219267253 { padding-top: 310px; background-color: rgb(215, 227, 242);}#banner-219267253 .ux-shape-divider--top svg { height: 150px; --divider-top-width: 100%;}#banner-219267253 .ux-shape-divider--bottom svg { height: 150px; --divider-width: 100%;}

In Korea, well-known public figures born in the Year of the Tiger include Oldboy actor Choi Min-sik, singer BoA, and Chung Mong-koo, the former CEO of Hyundai Motor Group. The Tiger is also prominent in Korean folklore and considered a representative animal of Korea due to its presence in Korean foundation mythology (“The Legend of Dangun”).

But what are people born in the Year of the Tiger like? Similar to Western astrology, each animal year comes with its own characteristics. Those born in the Year of the Tiger are seen as independent and active people who are brave and highly motivated. However, like real tigers, they are also known to be unpredictably hot-tempered and have a rebellious streak.

EPIK HIGH returning to Coachella for second year

EPIK HIGH will be making their big return to California’s premier Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, event officials confirmed on January 12.

The South Korean hip-hop trio will be performing on Day 1 of the three-day event, joining other major international acts like Harry Styles, Daniel Caesar, Big Sean, NIKI, and Carly Rae Jepsen. The event repeats for a second weekend overall, so Day 1 will be held on both April 15 and 22, with the event running from April 15-17 then April 22-24 overall.

This is EPIK HIGH’s second time on the Coachella lineup, having become the second-ever South Korean musical act to perform the festival with their appearance back in 2016. They were also scheduled to perform alongside K-Pop boy group BIGBANG at the 2020 festival; however, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the first-ever South Korean act to perform at Coachella was experimental husband-wife duo EE, famous for their contribution to MFBTY’s “Buckubucku” featuring BTS’s RM. K-Pop girl group BLACKPINK also famously played the festival in 2019, with segments of their performance seen in their 2020 Netflix documentary ‘BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky.’

According to Coachella promoters Goldenvoice, Weekend 1 of this year’s Coachella event has sold out. However, Weekend 2 tickets can be purchased through the festival’s official homepage at coachella.com.

Interesting correlation between language and age!

Factor #1
Since these are the underlying rules for pretty much everything you say in Korean, unless you are going to just stick to formal language forever, you will want to eventually know the other person’s age. (And of course, age difference affects many other aspects of two people’s relationship, but let’s just focus on linguistic elements here.)

Factor #2
In Korean culture, two different age systems are used. One is the “normal” age calculation, measuring exactly “how old” you are, in years/months/days. And in the other method, you just count how many different years you’ve experienced in your life. So in this system, if you were born in 1998, you are in “year no. 1” of your life, and the next year, you are in “year no. 2” of your life, so you are 2. This system used to be implemented in many countries around the world a long time ago, but now Korea is known to be the only place where it’s still actively used. So in Korean age, everybody ages at the same time on January 1st of every year, because the year number has changed.

Factor #3
When children grow up and eventually reach school age, it’s usually “year no. 8” of their life, so in Korean age, 8살. And this is where things get complicated and at the same time, very interesting. In principle, everybody should be 8 years old (in Korean age) because they all live in the same timeline and nobody is time traveling. But until about a decade ago, the Korean school system allowed parents to enroll their children in elementary school one year earlier if the child was born in January or February, because the Korean school year starts in March. One possible explanation for this is that the child mortality rate was much higher and birthdate registrations were not always accurate in the 50s and 60s, so this kind of flexibility was more widely accepted. But now, with very accurate birth records, it has become unnecessary, so this kind of early school admission system based on birth months was removed in 2008.

Factor #4
However, people in their 20s, 30s and older all started elementary school before 2008, so everybody remembers going to school with a few classmates that were actually younger than them in Korean age. And the people who entered school earlier because of their early birthdays are called 빠른년생 (lit. = early year born). So for example, someone born in January of 1994 was able to attend elementary school with everyone else in the class being born in 1993, and everybody in the class (regardless of the birth year) talked to each other in casual language (반말).

Factor #5
All of that is okay and simple… until you graduate and then start working. Using 반말 to people who are “technically” a year older than you was okay and allowed when you were in school, but only because you were all classmates with no social hierarchy. This continues all the way up to college.

So what happens?

So what a funny yet very common situation that can happen is, you start working at an organization and you introduce yourself to other people. The topic of how old you are will naturally come up and those who are the same age will (with mutual agreement) talk to each other in 반말 when they are in private settings.

As a real-life example, our very own TTMIK teachers 승완 and 예지 were born in the same year, which makes them the same age, but 승완 was born in February and therefore entered school one year before 예지 did, who was born in December. So even though 승완 and 예지 were born in the same year and can talk to each other in 반말 privately, all of 승완’s “same-age” friends are one year older than 예지’s same-age friends. So imagine 승완 and 예지 each bringing one friend from college and hanging out together. There is definitely some discussion to be had about who can talk to whom in casual language once they get to know one another better, as well as what titles to use (오빠? Or their personal name + 씨?) to address people.

There is no telling exactly until when this “Korean” method of counting one’s age will continue to be used, but while it’s in use, there will always be some initial, potentially fun confusion and discussion about how to address each other.

Thank you very much for reading and see you next time!

Question 1.
When is your birthday?
It’s December 2nd. Wow, Seung-wan’s birthday is coming!🥳

It’s February 25th. I hope Yeji has prepared a wonderful birthday present!😏

Question 2.
I don’t have one… Hopefully Seung-wan has one, haha.

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain.” I love this quote.

Question 3.
What is your favorite course on TTMIK’s website?

예지: 저는 “10 Korean Expressions for Flavors with Various Meanings” 코스를 가장 좋아합니다. 😎
