Study Through Interviews: Why do Koreans live with their parents even as an adult?

Here are the Korean transcripts, English translations and key expressions from the interviews of the video!

Interview #1.

안전하고 깨끗한 집을 서울에서 구하려면 돈이 너무 많이 들어요.
Getting a safe and clean home in Seoul costs too much money.

아, 그러면 서울 말고 다른 데는요?
I see. Then how about places outside of Seoul?

집에서 오는 거랑 큰 차이가 없어서, 거리 차이가…
Then it wouldn’t be so different from my current commute, distance-wise.

원래 독립을 했었었는데
I used to live on my own before,

해외에 있다가 한국에 들어오면서
but as I was coming back to Korea after living abroad,

다시 (가족들이랑) 같이 살게 되었고…
I started living with my family again.

그때는 제가 학생이었어 가지고
I was a student back then.

부모님이랑 사는 게 조금은 더 당연하다(고 생각했어요.)
So I thought it was a bit more natural for me to live with my parents.

나중에 결혼도 해야 하고…
I need to get married in the future, and

미래를 위해서 돈을 저축하려면
in order to save money for my future,

집에서 살아야 될 것 같아서 부모님과 같이 살고 있어요.
I thought I should live at (parents’) home, so I’m living with them now.

밖에 나오면 혼자 살아야 되는 것도 귀찮은 것 같고
When you move out, there’s a lot of hassle involved in living alone.

집값도 너무 비싸고
Houses are too expensive,

돈 들어가는 일이 좀 많은 것 같아요.
and I think there are a lot of things that cost money.

그리고 집이 회사랑 되게 가깝거든요.
And I live very close to the office.

그래서 굳이 나와서 살 필요를 못 느끼고 있는 것 같아요.
So I guess I’m not feeling the need to move out.

Interview #2.

한 2년 뒤에는 해 보고 싶어요.
Maybe in about 2 years from now?

그럼 지금 돈 엄청 모아야 되는 거 아니에요?
Then you are supposed to be having a ton of money now, right?

어… 맞아요. 하하하하!
That’s right. Hahahaha!

하루라도 빨리… (독립하고 싶어요.)
As soon as possible… (I want to move out.)

마흔이 되기 전에는 독립할 생각이에요.
I’m planning to move out before I turn 40.

결혼하면 나올 것 같은데
I think I’ll move out when I get married.

결혼을 안 하거나
But if I don’t get married, or

결혼을 나중에 하게 된다면
if I end up getting married (much) later,

굳이 안 나오고 계속 살 것 같은데요.
then I probably won’t bother moving out and just keep living there.

Full transcript of the conversation

How to use the Korean word 모습 properly

When you want to talk about the shape of something or what someone looks like, there are mainly 3 words you will find in the dictionary.

모양모습생김새

모양 and 생김새 are fairly easy to understand.

모양 is usually the go-to word for the “shape” of an object. You can describe a round object as 동그란 모양.

생김새 can also refer to the shape of an object, but it can also refer to the looks or features of a person.

But the word 모습 is a bit more complicated. Watch this video lesson to learn more about how to use the word 모습!

How does 찾다 mean both “to find” and “to look for” in Korean?

When you look up 찾다 in the dictionary, both “to find” and “to look for” will pop up as its translations. Which one does it mean? Can it mean both? If so, how do you know which meaning the speaker is trying to express?

As you can expect, it all comes down to context, but there are also some ways Korean speakers use to make a distinction between these two meanings.

Let’s look at sample sentences using each 찾다.

찾다 = to find Did you find it? = 찾았어요?I found it! = 찾았어요!Where did you find it? = 어디에서 찾았어요?How did you find it? = 어떻게 찾았어요? Who found it? = 누가 찾았어요?찾다 = to look forWhat are you looking for? = 뭐 찾고 있어요?Is there something you are looking for? = 찾는 거 있으세요?

When you look at those sentences, the meaning distinction is easier and you don’t need any other clues to clear things up. But if you want to say things like:

Did you look for it? I looked for it.

Things become a bit confusing because if you just say 찾았어요? or 찾았어요, it will mean “Did you FIND it?” and “I FOUND it.” Then how can you express the meaning of “look for” in this case? ⬇

That’s when you add the word 보다 and use 찾아보다 instead of 찾다.

When you say 찾았어요?, it sounds almost always like “Did you find it?” and almost never “Did you look for it?”.

➡ So instead, you need to say 찾아봤어요? to mean “Did you look for it?”.

When you say 여기에서 찾았는데, it usually means “I found it here but” and not “I looked for it here but”.

➡ So instead, you need to say 여기에서 찾아봤는데 to mean “I looked (for it) here but…”

But when you use the present progressive tense, or in other words, say that you are “looking for” something, you can use 찾고 있다 because you are probably not saying that you are “finding” something.

뭐 찾고 있어요? = What are you looking for?제 안경 찾고 있어요. = I’m looking for my glasses.

If you say 찾아보고 있어요, it also means something slightly different. You are looking for something, but you are researching for it or looking things up online.

인터넷에서 정보를 찾아보고 있어요. = I’m looking up information online.
