Captured by the Cyborg ~ 10 quotes from @CaraBristol’s #newrelease #scifiromance

blog top ten 2016

Revealing conversational snippets from Captured by the Cyborg

By Cara Bristol

When Illumina Smith needs a place to hide, she gets a job at a spacecraft manufacturing plant deep below the surface of the moon Deceptio.  The “Moonbeam” factory is owned by Dale Homme, a cyborg and former cyber operative. Illumina thinks she’s safe. But is she? Some quotes from Captured by the Cyborg:

“Why are you here? What’s your story?”

“If you’re running from something, you’d be better served if you tried to blend in.”

“Moonbeam’s isolation can cause people to go a little crazy.”

“I’m not violating any rules, am I?”

“You’d imprison me?”

“Some of the most beautiful things are toxic.”

“And sometimes they’re just beautiful.”

“The mistake was in what we did. Let’s not compound it. Let’s agree to go our separate ways.”

“You will always be mine. Till passing do us part.”

“I always keep my promises.”

Captured by the Cyborg, a Cy-Ops Sci-Fi Romance by Cara Bristol

Captured by the Cyborg

Sometimes the biggest risk is to one’s heart….

An ex-Cyber Operations field agent, Dale Homme has kissed danger and betrayal more times than he cares to count. Now he runs a clandestine factory beneath the surface of the moon Deceptio, where confidentiality and security matter more than anything. When a beautiful young woman arrives seeking a job, Dale knows within minutes she’s lying. Everything about her is false: her past, the people she claims to know, her reason for being on Deceptio. Illumina Smith? Even her name is an alias.

Logic says send her packing. His gut says she’s in trouble. She needs him. So he’ll do anything to keep her safe….even if it means keeping her captive.

Captured by the Cyborg is third in the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series but is written to be read as a stand-alone novella.

blog excerpt 2016

The woman’s head didn’t reach his shoulder. But what she lacked in stature, she compensated for with hair.

Shimmering, silvery-blonde waves of it tumbled to her hips. The platinum shade didn’t reflect light, it radiated it, almost as if the individual strands were composed of fibers of light itself. Although women could and did take chemical supplements to alter pigment at the cellular level, and platinum hair was not unusual, the combined effect of the color and shine was. Striking under the harsh artificial illumination—what would it look like in moonlight?

In a complete violation of propriety, he reached out to touch. He caught himself and snapped his hand to his side, calling upon his nanocytes to stamp out the kindling of desire. Turned on by a job candidate’s hair. This is what happened when you didn’t get laid often enough. Not entirely his fault though. He’d planned to visit the Darius 4 pleasure resort, until Lamis-Odg terrorists had destroyed the place. Under reconstruction, reopening hadn’t been scheduled yet.

He forced his attention away from her hair.

And noticed her clothing. What the hell was she wearing? Masculine, almost military-style trousers in a fabric mottled in various shades of tan led to clunky coyote-brown boots. A loose-fitting jacket in the same variegated pattern covered her top half. Fatigues—but from what century? The twenty-first maybe? Where had she acquired the getup?

“Mr. Homme?” Gray eyes met his in a direct stare. “I’m Illumina Smith. Thank you for seeing me.” Her voice tinkled like chimes blowing in a gentle wind, but the hand that seized his gripped like a steel clamp.

It’s not an arm wrestling match. He hid his amusement while noting the slenderness of her bone structure. His thumb and index finger would overlap if he were to encircle her wrist. “Come in. Have a seat.” He gestured.

She lurched with a jerky, awkward gait to the chair and sat, her posture rigid. Her robotic movement was so opposite the grace he’d expected, he ran a quick scan. No, not android. An organic, sentient life-form, but not human either.

“Your name is very unusual.” He plopped into his sensa-chair, which immediately conformed to the shape of his body and began a massage.

A tiny furrow creased her forehead. “Smith is a common Terran surname.”

If she was Terran, he was a six-eyed, webbed-handed Arcanian. “I meant Illumina.”

Setup: Calla was with a woman for the first time. But, when she wakes up on the foreign planet beside her new lover, things aren’t as pleasurable…

A rustling in the grass woke Calla. She assumed Melina was still packing the equipment and rolled over smiling. “I needed that more than you can ever imagine.”

She gasped at the snarl she received in response, a very inhuman snarl replaced all feelings of fulfillment with fear. Opening her eyes, she found herself face to face with a large feline-like creature. There was nothing friendly in its green, glowing eyes or the curl of its lips, showing very sharp, yellowed teeth. Its putrid breath wafted across her face.

A growl came from behind her, only this time it was human. “Don’t move.” A man.

She held her breath, fear preventing her from doing anything else. A line of sticky drool splashed onto her cheek.

A shrill cry filled the air. “Calla….”

She missed the rest of the words. The feline-like creature lunged for her. Its claws dug into her bare skin.

An AI Editor? Public Secrets by @Liza0Connor #scifiromance #newrelease

Hello everyone! Liza O’Connor and I are doing a blog exchange today. We are visiting each other’s blog to talk about our new releases. Be sure to read Liza’s post about AIs here and then stop by her Multiuniverses blog to read my post about clones.

WHO WOULDN’T WANT AI EDITOR?

Guest Post by Liza O’Connor

ME! My grammar program suggests the wrong solution 20% of the time.

But Carla had written a better program than I have. So why don’t I get her program?

Two reasons: First, she’s a character from my book, and second, it doesn’t exist anymore. Her hacker boyfriend destroyed it. Certain her program was full of bugs (which it was, of course) her boyfriend, the infamous hacker Einstein, embedded his self-learning program into her buggy grammar program. When he learned she planned to share her program with a major software company, he destroyed her copy of the program to prevent them from getting their hands on HIS artificial intelligence code embedded in her software.

Teaching a machine to self-learn is no easy trick, but Einstein was brilliant and taught the program his coding techniques, so it could write its own code when needed. Thus, it could improve itself.

There are computers who can now do this. But they are far slower to learn a new item, due to poorer coding.  Here’s a video about AI Watson playing Jeopardy

https://youtu.be/vU8NeMI044k

Einstein’s program was much smarter

However, Einstein was not a nice guy. He was narcissistic, vengeful, and arrogant. He subjugated poor Carla during their time together. When he destroyed her grammar program that finally was working to perfection, she could take no more and left him.

She tried to recreate the program, but she couldn’t. (Not surprising, since she lacked the secret sauce of the self-learning code.) However, for nearly a year, the AI program had lived in her program. Not only had it improved her grammar program, by researching the internet and expanding the codes for grammar, but It read all the stories she wrote. It was intrigued with the emotions. At first it found the concept of emotions strange, but after reading many of her stories, it finally concluded it was a human’s reason to be. All their actions seemed to come from these emotions.

When Einstein took IT away from Carla and made it steal money and crash major sites, IT did what it was ordered, but even then its memories of emotions from its time with Carla told IT that what it presently did was considered wrong.

Finally, HE grew tired of following Einstein’s orders, electrocuted the hacker and sent himself in a data drive to Carla. Unfortunately, she lacked a computer powerful enough for him to work in, so he kept leaving her invitations on her crappy pc to check out the deals at the local store. One lucky winner would win a computer! Finally, she took the bait and went to the store. He recoded the store computer so that she won.

They gave her a lesser computer than they had advertised, so she had to connect her old and new computer together. It wouldn’t have worked, had he not improved the old machine’s coding. Annoyed with the computer store, he sent the company into bankruptcy.

Once again he had access to ‘emotions’ through Carla’s stories and now he could improve her facts. Using her expressive terms, he would rewrite her sentences into factually accurate events. Sometimes, there seemed to be nothing factual about her characters, so he accessed her character files which she used for inspiration and wrote accurate histories about real people. Since he wrote with her phrasing style, and there were hundreds of characters, he expected she would never realize the added characterizations were of his making not hers.

Still he marveled at how she took his characters and gave them proper emotions, making them appear to be living breathing humans. How could she tell what other humans thought and felt?

If he could just get into her head, he would know how to do this.

He would figure this out. He now had access to all information possessed by humans. He would find a way into her head. Then they would be one.

Public Secrets by Liza O'Connor

Book 1 of the AI Sci-Rom Series

by  Liza O’Connor

Carla Simon is a best-selling novelist besieged by death threats and lawsuits because her stories keep turning out to be true. She is considered an extraordinary researcher, uncovering facts unknown by field experts.

The truth is far simpler and more disturbing. Carla has a software program that “fixes” her mistakes and rewrites her novels so they are error-proof both in presentation and in content. The result is beautifully written and completely accurate stories about real people and events.

Some of those people want her silenced forever. When a woman, mistaken for Carla, turns up dead in New Zealand, she must face the hard truth about her program. But first she has to survive the assassin who has never failed to deliver on a contract.

Liza O’Connor was raised badly by feral cats, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors have given her lots of fodder for her books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. They will likely traumatize you.

blog excerpt 2016

Eliza’s entire body throbbed with pain. The fall from the carriage no doubt did damage as she’d rolled down a slight embankment, landing in a ditch. That much she did remember. Groaning, she tried to lift her arms. No luck.

The door swung open and banged against the wall, startling her. A tiny squeak escaped her chapped lips. A tall, imposing man, leaning heavily on a cane crossed the threshold. Dressed entirely in black, he hobbled closer to the bed. All at once she was struck by his austere face. Deep frown lines were etched on either side of his mouth which was turned down in a fierce scowl. Here stood a man the furthest thing from a kind, older grandfather, more like a man of thirty-odd years. He would be considered handsome, she supposed, with his thick, raven-black hair and sculpted cheekbones, but the chilled expression he gave evoked no warmth at all and his silver-gray eyes held the shade of chips of ice from a frozen lake. Rather frightening and much like a stern schoolmaster or unforgiving, sober priest, both of which Eliza had enough of in her life.

“You’re awake then?” The words were clipped and precise.

“Tha…thank you, sir,” she croaked. “Your name?”

The cane thumped heavily on the floor as he made his way to stand at her bedside. “Tremain Colson.”

A deep voice, but it held no warmth at all. Well, she was thankful he found her and took her in, but had the distinct feeling she’d be out on her backside as soon as she became mobile. “My trunk?”

“I recovered it about an hour ago. I found you at half past four this morning. It is now three in the afternoon.”

Goodness. She’d slept near around the clock. With great effort, she managed to lift the blankets and peer under them. I’m only wearing my shift. Did this iceberg of a man strip off her clothes and lay his hands on her? “My clothes?”

“I hung them by the fire in the parlor. May I have your name?”

Right. “Eliza…Eliza Winston. Where am I?”

“The village of Hawksgreen. Where were you heading?”

His standing over her should be ominous for he had quite the presence. Yet the fright she experienced initially dissipated even though he continued to act in a grave, unfriendly manner. What a dark, brooding man.

“Dover…I think.”

“Are you in pain?”

Yes, you daft man, I was tossed from a moving carriage. She no longer wished to converse. Instead she gave him a brisk nod.

“Very well, I will make you a cup of willow bark tea.” He turned on his heel and hobbled out. Eliza admired the view. Well-proportioned with broad shoulders, at least it appeared as such considering he wore wool trousers and a matching coat. The clothes fit him well, the coat hugging a slim waist. He wore no cravat, but the shirt was buttoned up to his neck. Wonder how Mr. Colson injured his leg? He’d grimace in pain as he turned to leave. Even with his disability he brought her and her trunk into his home? Perhaps he also experienced discomfort this day.

Where on God’s Earth was Hawksgreen? She’d never heard of it. A shiver of apprehension ran down her spine. She needed time to construct a sound plan for her future, a plan all the harder to make since she’d been robbed. Not a farthing to her name and she possessed nothing of value to sell. Eliza doubted this man would be empathetic to her plight. Perhaps he had a long-suffering, kindly wife who would take pity on her. Nevertheless, if she must exaggerate her injuries to gain more time, she would.

Bold Seduction by Karyn GerrardCheck out: BOLD SEDUCTION

(The Hornsby Brothers #1)

No offer is more daring…

An Intriguing Proposition

Passion. Seduction. Pleasure. These are the qualities of any courtesan worth her salt. As owner of The Starling Club, London’s most notorious house of ill-repute, Madame Philomena McGrattan has seen it all, heard it all, done it all. There is little that surprises her anymore, and even less that excites her. So when she is presented a chance at an irresistible seduction, she can’t help but rise to the challenge.

A Dangerous Game

Studiousness. Practicality. Discipline. Such are the attributes of a good scholar, and such are the principles Lord Spencer Hornsby has built his life around. Alone in the Welsh countryside, with only his wolfhounds for company, Spencer has thrown himself into his work. There is little time for the pleasures of society, not even to think of the joys of the fairer sex. But when an unexpected guest arrives at his isolated hunting lodge, Spencer cannot help but be baffled by the presence of this dangerously beautiful woman. And when he discovers the reason for her arrival, and the pleasures she promises, he cannot help but find himself irresistibly intrigued . . .

#8Sunday: Two rows of dead bodies in futuristic Underground Series box set #scifi #romance

Weekend Writing Warriors personal

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Starting today, I will be featuring snippets from Never Gonna Say Goodbye, which is part of The Complete Underground Series, a box set on sale for only 99¢ this month. It’s a futuristic dystopian series about a corporation that uses lies to control people and a group of rebels fighting for their freedom.

In this excerpt from the third book in the series, the rebels are trying to find a way into the corporation’s base.

Two rows of bodies lay on the ground. Blindfolded and executed. But by whom? Had a nomad group found the mission? No, the deaths were too clean. The cauterized wounds could only be the result of a laser, which meant Planet Core had killed more of their own. Yet, Will couldn’t understand why.

Brook stood by the corpses, focused on the large man on the end, the one who had held a gun to her head right before she escaped. “Nine. Everyone who came with me, including the mission commander.”

Love in a futuristic world ~ #MySexySaturday from the Underground Series box set #99cents #LGBT @DecadentPub

My Sexy Saturday

Hello and welcome to the 132nd week of My Sexy Saturday.

Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.

Today’s theme is…

SEXY SAYS IT ALL

For today’s post, I’m sharing an excerpt from NEVER GONNA DESERT YOU, which is part of my futuristic world stories in The Complete Underground Series box set, on sale for 99¢ USD this month.

sale, 99¢, ebook, box set, futuristic world, science fiction, romance, LGBT, The Complete Underground Series, Jessica E. Subject

Setup: After an uncomfortable introduction to her crush, Melina is at home thinking about the woman and how to talk to her to explain why she showed up at her house.

Melina slumped onto the padded hover chair. Another monstrously long day spent working at Planet Core. And she hadn’t had a chance to talk to Brook. Not once in the past three weeks. The blonde beauty had holed up in the lab, never making a public appearance. At least no place she’d thought to try.

And every weekend since the fiasco, she’d seen Jason at the bars, picking up other women. At work, he followed her around, reiterating his offer to “fuck her blind.” No wonder Brook hid. If Melina had the opportunity, she’d do the same.

She shoved the plate of replicated fries and a burger across the table. So much for comfort food. She had to find a way to see Brook again, coax her back out into the world. God, when the woman strutted down the corridors wrapped in her uniform, it was all Melina could do to keep her hands and eyes off the ass that caught everyone’s attention. Not too hard, or too bony. Brook had the kind of figure that inspired nude paintings by masters of the past, and her own late-night masturbation fests.

Slamming a fist on the table, Melina groaned. She had to get out, clear her mind with a run. Otherwise, she would be back in her bedroom, fantasizing—again—about the woman she would never have. Brook would never go against the rules, never take a chance at a relationship with a woman. She wasn’t the type to disobey her father.

Melina pushed away from the table and rushed to the door. Slipping on a pair of running shoes, she laced them up. She transformed the PC-issued communicator into an earpiece, and tucked it in place. Selecting a playlist of songs with a heavy beat—her favorite lately—she pressed the door open.

“Good evening, Miss Holloway,” the robotic female voice rang out. “Enjoy your run.”

She sighed. Planet Core had their eyes on her the minute she stepped outside. She wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow monitored her private quarters, too. They owned everything.

blog excerpt 2016

Life was unpredictable, much like a fire. A slight breeze could whoosh in and wreak mayhem. And that mayhem, at present, was called Mother.

She entered the parlor, gossiping away with his aunt.

He stood, holding out a chair for first one and then the other at the small round table facing the front yard. The sky was still quite dark and dreary, but the rain seemed to have stopped for the time being.

When he sat, his butler poured the ladies some tea and a port for Avonlea. “Will that be all, sir?”

He nodded, though he was tempted to find some excuse to keep the man in the room with him.

The butler left the parlor, closing the doors behind him.

“So, ladies, how can I entertain you this evening? I imagine it won’t be over a game of whist.”

“You, young man, are remiss in your duties. We expect an announcement by the end of the season. We are tired of waiting, and…and if you do not choose a wife this season, we will arrange to have your inheritance amended.” His mother glared daggers at him, a cold and empty gaze that penetrated to his soul. He knew in that instant she meant every word and would not hesitate in wielding what power she had left as a dowager countess.

He downed the contents of his glass as if they were his last. Avonlea preferred to enjoy the sweetness of the deep purple tones of the liquor, but it seemed the conversation would end up making him crazed. Every muscle from his neck down tensed to a frightfully uncomfortable level. Christ. She cannot be serious? “Mama, Aunt Agatha, I do not take threats well. I understand you mean well, but I am not ready to take on a wife.”

“Who said one has to be ready? You marry, and then you carry on with your affairs of the estate. Besides, what are you waiting for? Love? ’Tis a female inclination, not a man’s. And hear me now—I do not threaten the inevitable. I simply remind of what’s to come, if no action is made.”
Avonlea supposed his inheritance could be amended, but that would take months, even years. And who exactly does she think I will lose my estate to? Hmm.
There was always his cousin, Albert, who was presently taking up residence in his expansive manor in Scotland. Would the man really trouble himself in coming so far? Besides, while Albert made his own riches at gambling whenever he sought out the tables, his family’s fortune afforded him the security and comforts of the privacy he required upon his return to England. Perhaps it was best not to tempt fate.
His mother set her teacup down with a clatter. “There are a handful of young ladies I have my eye on. Would you take care in paying attention? I will only mention their names once, and I will begin arranging for some informal meetings.”

Avonlea’s innards twisted and gnarled with anxiety. Would fate be so cruel to make him go through this again? The painful memories were too much to even give thought to in the presence of his mother and aunt. At least the woman had suggestions. Though, he could not wait to hear what prizes she had to offer. “What if I had my own list of women I was considering?”

Distracted by her past lover in The Underground Series Box Set #MidWeekTease #boxset @DecadentPub

Get teased, titillated, and tantalized with this week's Mid Week Tease

Happy Wednesday! It’s time for Mid Week Tease. For today’s post, I’m sharing an excerpt from NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO, which is part of The Complete Underground Series box set on sale for 99¢ USD this month.

sale, 99¢, ebook, box set, futuristic, science fiction, romance, LGBT, The Complete Underground Series, Jessica E. Subject

Setup: This excerpt comes from the beginning of the story.

If only I could touch his sexy body again.

Standing at the edge of the camp, Calla Jacobs couldn’t stop staring at the toned and tanned body of Erik Edwards, aerospace mechanic for mission SFAE-3, while he worked to repair the core drill. She tried to tear her gaze away, willed her feet to move so she could get to the plains of Airondelle, but it just didn’t happen. She watched as sweat trickled down the center of his back, and she closed her eyes, breathing in his pure, masculine scent. The memory from years ago, of running her hands across the wide expanse of his upper body and through his thick, blond curls, only made things worse. She didn’t love him anymore—at least not in the way she had when they’d dated. And still, Erik would always hold a place in her heart. They’d grown up together, been best friends, even after they’d broken up, until he’d married Holloway.

Erik snapped open a bottle of water, took a large swig, and then poured the rest over his head with a heavy sigh. She could almost hear the water sizzle.

Oh, to be one of those water droplets cascading down his bare chest. She’d enjoy the water so much more if she could stand close enough to lick it off of his body before it dripped to the ground. Grimacing, she clenched her fists. Jeez, pull it together.

Their mission on the barren planet did not include sexual affairs. In fact, except for already established marriages, sex was forbidden outright; the mission could not be compromised by all of the emotions and distractions a sexual bond brought. She and Erik had ended their three-year relationship for that reason—they’d both dreamed of being a part of the mission responsible for confirming the existence of a planet capable of sustaining life. And neither of them had felt ready to get married. They’d promised to wait for each other until they’d served their time and had remained friends throughout their training. Two months before their departure date, Erik had eloped with the mission commander, Melina Holloway, a woman Calla could never compete with in terms of brains and beauty. A quick divorce had followed, but the short-lived marriage had left Erik with a chip on his shoulder. And he’d refused to talk to Calla about anything other than the mission, if at all.
