April’s 99¢ title ~ Another Night Another Planet #scifiromance @DecadentPub
Each month, in an agreement with my publisher, one of my titles is put on sale for only 99¢ at Amazon and All Romance. This month, it’s my action/adventure sci-fi romance, ANOTHER NIGHT ANOTHER PLANET.
Limited by status…
Ava is a housekeeper aboard Star Spirit, a luxury cruise ship travelling between the Milky Way and the Belvarian System. Coming from a middle-class family on Earth, she is considered by passengers as nothing more than an object to be tossed away when they’re done with her.
Shunned because of his lineage…
Banned from several planets across the universe, Nate struggles to run his interstellar shipping business. But the DNA of an exterminated race runs through his blood, giving him a diluted form of their powers, and leaving him labeled as a terrorist.
Both searching for the one…
Through her 1Night Stand dating service, Madame Evangeline matches these two together for a celestial escape on the pleasure planet, Elatia.
Will Ava and Nate find what they’re looking for, or will their date be just another night on another planet?

Here’s an excerpt from the first chapter:
“Run, Nate, run!”
Natazekiel, well aware of the stupid remark he’d made, bounded out of the pub behind his friend. As he rushed past, he toppled tables and chairs on their sides to slow his pursuers. Slamming into the doorframe, he lost his footing. He spun around, catching sight of the burly, blue-skinned Otarians lumbering after him, veins throbbing in their thick necks.
Regaining his balance, he scrambled down the street. He spotted Wyn ahead of him, rounding a corner. But the men he’d pissed off remained on his heels. If he followed his friend, they would chase him, too. If Wyn reached their star cruiser first, Nate hoped he would find a way to rescue him.
A beam of red light slammed into the road in front of him, blasting chunks of concrete all around him. Shit!
He faked to the right, pretending to follow his friend. Then he weaved left. The cursing from behind made him pause, but he valued his life too much—even if no one else did—to turn around.
Ornate stone pillars decorated the front of the tall, posh building ahead of him. An Otarian man stepped out of the entrance, and Nate raced to catch the door before it slammed shut. Inside, he glanced down the long hallway—lit by lavish sconces—at the multitude of doors lining either side. Would he find a way out behind any of them?
With his heart pounding, he grabbed each large brass-colored handle as he rushed by. None of the doors opened for him.
“There he is. Shoot him!”
Nate glanced back to see multiple laser guns aimed at him. Crap, he needed to escape. Fast. He slammed his shoulder into the next door. It flew open, revealing a luxurious suite full of silks and tapestries from the planet Earth. Not a suite he would ever receive an invitation to visit. He darted into a smaller room, finding a slender Otarian woman, naked save for a thin strip of cloth across her breasts and between her legs.
She drew a finger along her delectable blue curves. “Are you my date?”
“Date?” How he wished.
“Yes, did Madame Eve send you?”
For a second, he considered saying yes. Too much time had passed since he’d gotten laid. But with the barbarians after him, he wouldn’t have the chance to satisfy her the way any honorable man should. “Um, no. He’s a lucky man, though. Sorry to intrude.”
He sidestepped to the lofty window, yanking it up. Propping himself on the ledge, he somersaulted through the opening then, dropping farther than he’d expected, crashed to the ground. He didn’t have time to survey his injuries, as a beam blasted the frame above him, sprinkling bits of mortar on his head. Poor woman to have those brutes in her room.
Jumping to his feet, he glanced back and forth down the alley he’d landed in. He raced away from the busy street at one end into darker, unfamiliar territory. Best not to have his pursuers blast innocent bystanders.
After rounding another corner, he ducked behind an immense steel bin, expecting to have lost the bulky, determined men chasing him. A few moments passed in silence. Nate peeked around the edge. Nothing. He’d lost them.
Ready to get the Claustrum off Otaria, he crept farther into the darkness. Even with the sun high in the sky, very little light permeated this space. Pipes from the buildings and holes in the ground released steam around him. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, stinging his eyes. He wiped the moisture away then picked up his pace. A radiance shone ahead. Freedom? Once he returned to the main streets, he would locate Wyn, and their ship.
A beam shot past his head, singing the tip of his ear. Too close. He shot off again, bursting into a cluster of Otarians. He skidded around the next corner toward the open port. His ship was supposed to be there, but the dock where he’d parked it lay empty.
Shit. Where is Wyn?
He searched the skies, spotting the star cruiser barreling toward him. What in Claustrum? His friend would kill him and everyone on the streets. Nate continued running to the field and a line fell from the ship. His chest tightened. No way! I have to climb that? Yeah, right. He didn’t do stunts.
Dirt shot up around him as more blasts came from the men wanting him dead. Guess I have no other choice. Time to be a daredevil. He darted toward the dangling rope, praying to the gods Wyn’s stunt would work. Lifting his arms, he reached for the knot at the end and grabbed hold, asking for the strength to maintain his grip.
In an instant, he lifted off the ground, clinging to the lifeline. A few more laser beams shot past. All at once, the burly men below lowered their guns, staring at him. And his denims rested around his ankles, exposing him for all to see. Well, that explains the sudden breeze.
“Told you mine’s bigger than yours,” he shouted.
When another beam burnt a hole through his pants, he pulled his knees up, trying to save his vital organs. He spun around, hanging on tight while Wyn circled back, racing him away from danger.
Beyond the docks of the port, Nate dropped the line. He yanked up his still smoking jeans, waiting for Wyn to land. Once the door to the ship opened, he rushed inside.
“Go, go, go.”
He swung into the second seat, his heart hammering, as he helped program a course out into space.
“Why do I always wind up catching you with your pants around your ankles every time we go out?”
Nate grinned as the vessel shot out of Otaria’s atmosphere.
“Because you like to see my cock. Admit it.”
Wyn jerked the ship starboard, tossing Nate out of his seat and onto the floor.
“Fucker. What’d you do that for?”
“Nothing. Wait ’til you do something.”
He punched his friend in the arm then scrambled back into his chair. With Wyn busy flying them to their next destination, Nate decided to connect to the uni-web. The woman he’d burst in on back on Otaria had stroked his curiosity. He typed Madame Eve and date into the browser, waiting for the results to pop up.
A few seconds later, he stared at the screen, unable to believe what he’d read. He clicked on the first link. 1Night Stand? A dating service? He thought the woman he’d seen too attractive to need someone to find her a date. If she’d found him half an hour earlier, she could have had him for the night. But no matter how much the idea flabbergasted him, he couldn’t stop reading about Madame Eve’s magical matchmaking abilities. Could there really be someone out there for him? He shook his head. Maybe for one night, but not for a lifetime. That bridge had come and been stolen away from him, never to be crossed again. Of all the people he’d met in his life, Wyn remained the only person who stuck around. Yet, Nate believed one day he would lose him, too. Last star cycle, Wyn had a serious girlfriend, Carlotta. She’d forced him to choose between her and Nate. He’d almost cried when Wyn showed up at the star cruiser the day he’d set to leave. No one had ever chosen him before, his own parents dropping him off at the spaceport on Earth, never to be heard from again. But then he’d done the same thing to the one girl who’d ever mattered. He winced. If he hadn’t been forced to leave the planet, he might still be with her.
Nate shook away the memory, returning his attention to the screen. He snorted when he read the cost for one of the arranged dates. Sure, he had the money, but on Rolox, he could get five women to spend the night with him for the same price. Though on that planet, he might leave with any number of diseases and other nasties. He clicked the form for fun, and whistled at the hundred or more questions on the application. This Madame Eve seemed thorough in learning about her clients.
“What are you lookin’ at?” Wyn leaned over the side of his chair. “You? A dating service?”
He chuckled, his cheeks warming. “No. I just heard a woman mention it when I escaped through her room. She’d apparently used this service and was waiting for her date when I barged in.”
His friend stood behind him, clasping his shoulder. “I’m surprised you didn’t take advantage of the situation.”
“Didn’t have a chance.” Yet, he wouldn’t have. He refused to pretend to be someone else. A woman had to want him for him. He would no longer hide what he was.
“You should give it a try.”
The comment came like a kick to the nuts. Spinning around in his chair, he faced Wyn. “You’ve got to be joking. This woman sets people up on a one-night stand, but according to her clients, more often than not, the relationship lasts well beyond one night.”
“Exactly. You’ve spent all this time zooming around space, searching for someone. I think it’s about time you stop to find her.”
He clenched the arms of the chair. “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m fully capable of finding my own dates.”
“C’mon. The women you find are willing to fuck anyone who asks. It’s all a ruse as you search for the one woman you’re pining over.”
“You think I’m looking for love? Yeah, right.” That ship had sailed a long time ago. Best friend or not, Wyn had pushed the boundaries of their camaraderie. Nate rose to his feet and shoved past him. “Stay out of my business.”
“If I did, you’d be dead by now,” Wyn shouted after him.
Nate slammed the door to his cubby behind him and pounded his fist against the wall. The fucker was right, Nate would have been killed numerous times if Wyn hadn’t come to his rescue. And perhaps he was lonely, always yearning to run into his one true love. But she resided on Earth, a place he could never return. He stripped off his pants and slumped onto his cot. The darkness helped to soothe his anger.
He thought of 1Night Stand. Am I ready to settle down? Is there really another woman out there for me? Madame Eve guaranteed one night. He huffed out a breath. No harm in trying. Yes, as soon as Wyn retired to his bunk, Nate would fill out the questionnaire.
What would happen after that? He’d let fate decide.

Review of Made For Her: “A satisfying love story that keeps the action and surprises going” #SFR
Made For Her re-released on February 29 after some revisions, and an extra chapter was added. I wanted to share some of the new reviews that have come in…
“I enjoyed the story and couldn’t wait to see how the no-win situation between Mikayla and Dare would be resolved. How much would she be willing to give up for a second chance with the man she thought she’d lost? This book doesn’t disappoint and delivers a twist or two right up to the end. A satisfying love story that keeps the action and surprises going all the way through.” – Author Deborah A. Bailey
“I enjoyed this sensual sci-fi fantasy romance on so many levels. First, it was well-written and flowed smoothly from one scene to the next. The worldbuilding was done just right and there was no hardcore sci-fi stuff to confound readers thus making the story readable and comprehensible from start to finish. I also love strong female protagonists and Mikayla was no exception. True, she had her vulnerable side and flaws but those only made her more endearing. Daniel’s clone, Dare was a striking character as well – handsome, virile and out to prove that clones are humans too!” – aobibliosphere™
An Amazon Review:
“What a fantastic set-up! Imagine if your husband had died. Years later you learn he’d been cloned. THEN his clone shows up in your flight school. What would you do? Could you resist a second chance at love? I loved that Made For Her offered something other than the typical “alien” hero (not that there’s anything wrong with a hunky, buff alien). The book also surprised me with a couple of twists that I never saw coming.”
Remember, you can always read a sample of the story using the “Look Inside” feature on Amazon and/or read an excerpt on the Made For Her book page.

Amazon US | UK | Canada | Germany | Australia | Japan
After terrorists murder the love of her life, Colonel Mikayla Jones trains squadron after squadron of the clones he brought to life, to take to the skies. When she discovers a young clone of her husband in her newest class, her world spins out of control. How can she command the look-a-like when she can’t help but yearn for him to fill an ache in her heart?
Dare was created to be the best. As the first Daniel clone to leave Onatria labs, he needs to prove he is more than just a DNA copy. To do that, he must rely on the wife of the man who donated his genes. But when she refuses to train him, Dare faces discharge and returning to the labs. Can he convince Colonel Jones to finish his training and find a way into her bed? Or will long kept secrets unhinge the entire clone project?
Please note: Made For Her was previously published with another publisher. It has been revised and expanded from the original version. This version also includes the short story, Replicated Consequences, which takes place in the same world.

#8Sunday: She willed the orb to give her a sign in Alien Attraction #scifi #romance
Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!
I finished Bryce last weekend, but I’m not ready to share excerpts from that story yet. So, this month, I’m going to share excerpts from Alien Attraction, the third book in the Alien Next Door series.
This snippet is from the very beginning. The orb mentioned is part of every story in the series.
Soul mate. The one person Angela would marry, spend the rest of her life with. Did she have one somewhere on this planet, or was she destined to spend the rest of her life alone?
Holding the crystal orb passed down to her by her father over a year earlier, she willed it to give her a sign, flash red or blue. Or any other color for all she cared. The extraterrestrial sphere hadn’t provided any guidance in her life decisions as it had her father and brother, hadn’t shared its thoughts on the two guys she’d dated since moving to the city, not even whether she should stay there. Had the battery died, or was she too human to make it work? Her brother Adam, had told her to be thankful she shared little of the extraterrestrial DNA, that her life would be easier. Instead, she didn’t fit in. Anywhere.
~ ALIEN ATTRACTION ~
She wants to be more alien.
He wants to be more human.
Born a galaxy apart, will Angela and Chal have a chance at love, or will their extraterrestrial secrets leave them running to stay alive?

Locking lips with Luke Jones #MySexySaturday from ALIEN ADORATION #scifiromance #books
Hello and welcome to the 135th week of My Sexy Saturday.
Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.
Today’s theme is…
BRING IT HOME FOR SEXY
For today’s post, I’m sharing an excerpt from ALIEN ADORATION, the first book in my Alien Next Door series, which is only 99¢.
Setup: Luke and Rachel have lived beside each other for two years. Luke finally asked her out, and Rachel went through a great deal to prepare for the date, but she’s a little uncomfortable.
He stepped closer, backing her into the counter, his groin pressing against her belly. He cupped the sides of her face and stared into her eyes, his gaze more focused than ever. “I told you, I don’t want those women. While I’m flattered you went through all that trouble for me, I’d still want to kiss you if you hadn’t. I’ve wanted you since I moved in.”
His lips grazed hers, and she closed her eyes, forgetting all of her reasons to stop him.
“I’ve just been too afraid.”
Afraid? She didn’t have time to comprehend his whispered words. He kissed down her neck and along her jaw line. Then he claimed her mouth. Gripping the edge of his shirt, she lost herself in the thrill. Finally, she was locking lips with Luke Jones.
He lined her lips with his tongue, and she opened to him, allowing his sweet invasion. He ran his hands down her arms then grabbed her hips, lifting her onto the counter. Desire flooded her every thought. She couldn’t stop him even if she wanted.
Spreading her legs open, she allowed him to move between them. His hard shaft teased her core, every nerve in her body lighting up in response. She moaned. Yes.
His hand slid past the top of her dress, cupping a breast. Just like in her fantasies. She threw her head back as he sucked on her pebbled tip. His tongue swirled and he ground against her. Wetness pooled between her thighs.
Desire flooded her every thought. #Excerpt from Alien Adoration by Jessica E. Subject

Until she learns the truth…
Life on Earth has never been easy for Luke. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll go back to Dallas.
Since coming home Sutton has inherited herself a heap of headaches, two bossy men who want her for their own, threatening notes, and a whole lot of trouble in Paradise.
Having Doc McNab as competition, being ten years Sutton’s senior, and under her employ, meant the deck was stacked against Flint Palmer when it came to winning the sexy, vivacious Sutton as his woman. No way would she be interested in an old, worn-out, ex-rodeo cowboy like him, but that wasn’t going to stop the man from trying.
With the exception of the pretty as a picture, Sutton Callaway, Kale McNab’s childhood sucked. He’d been jerked up more so than raised by his ex-convict of a father, eventually leaving the girl and West Texas behind. Now, he’s all grown and back in Sutton’s life, willing to do whatever it takes to stay there.

What to readers have to say about Trouble in Paradise?
5 sexy stars!! Whoo I may need to be hosed down after reading this sexy, sexy book!! Melissa –Amazon
Whoo! What a twisting turning, one hell of a cliff hanger, roller coaster ride that was. Cutting Muse Blog Review
It’s a must read book. Shelly – Goodreads
Kale McNab (a.k.a. the devil) chuckled then ran his fingers through the strands of his brown-sugar-colored hair, mussing them as he eyed her chest. “Nice shirt, cowgirl.”
“Right. Don’t you really mean nice tits?”
“That, too,” he said, lifting his gaze up to her face. A second later, he glanced over to her truck. “What happened?”
“I was trying to find out when you interrupted me.”
“By all means,” he said, gesturing with his arm out in a cheesy game-show host kind of way. “Don’t let me stop you. Commence with the show.”
His gaze raked her from head to toe and back again.
Sutton’s eyes narrowed. “What?”
He locked gazes with her. “You know. All that jiggling about and hand waving you were doing was cute.”
“Jiggling about?” She lifted her chin and set her shoulders. “Cute?” she asked, piqued.
“Yeah,” he said, strolling past her to peek over the front of her pick-up. “Do you know anything about motors?”
“No.”
“So why look under the hood?”
Ugh. Even after all these years, the guy was just as infuriating as he was when he was a boy tormenting her on their bus rides to and from school.
With nothing else to do, because she wasn’t going to answer him, Sutton observed Kale poke around under the hood, seeing the cords flex in his tanned forearms. Why, oh why, did the devil need to wear muscle-hugging T-shirts and worn button fly blue jeans?

A second later, he shook his head. “Sutton. Looks like your engine is shot to shit.” He returned his attention to her with those green eyes of his. “You better call Tucker to come tow it since”—He patted the top of the front wheel well—“this old Ford isn’t going anywhere without one.”
“Dang it.”
She spun around.
“Where ya headed?” he asked.
“Back inside the hardware store to have them unload the bed of the truck and to call Macinroy.”
Kale caught up to her and kept pace. “Has anyone ever told you you’re sexy as hell when you’re ticked?”
She slowed.
He followed suit.
Sutton stopped.
So did he.
She turned to gawk at him.
Kale met her gaze. “You have the greenest eyes. They remind me of expensive jewels.”
“You can’t be serious,” she said.
His lips quirked up at the corners while he stood there oozing confidence and dangerous bad boy charm. “I assure you. I’m always serious when it comes to sexy women.”
She rolled those “jewels” of hers at him. “How is that working out for you?”
“Hm?”
“This whole slicker’n owl shit thing you have going on,” she said, making an air circle with her hand in front of him. “Do women really fall for your line of crap?”
He chuckled. “Crap, huh?”
“Kale, you’re so full of it, I’m surprised your eyes aren’t brown.”
“Hell, Sutton.” He reached out and swiped a stray lock of hair from her sweaty face—his knuckles briefly brushing against her damp neck. “You really do know how to cut a notch in a guy’s ego.”
“I’m sure your ego can handle having a notch or two whittled away.” She resumed her trek to the front doors of the store. For some reason, which eluded her, Kale kept pace. “Why are you following me?”
“Darlin’,” he said in a pitying, you-poor-clueless-little-thing manner which made her grit her teeth. “I was on my way to your ranch, but I saw you jumping and waving around at the front of your truck, so I thought I’d pull in here and see if I could lend a hand.”
I love: Coca-Cola, anything chocolate, reading, writing, singing, dancing, movies, listening to thunder storms, watching it rain, the mountains, the ocean, orchids, great smiles, and guys with brooding eyes and great scowls.

Hathor Legacy: Revelations (book 3) blurb and excerpt
Nadira tried to sit up, but her arms ached so much they couldn’t support her. Instead they wobbled and she was forced to drop back down against the pillows.
“Relax. You’re not going anywhere.” Jonathan propped himself up on his elbow and pulled the covers back over her.
She looked up into his grey eyes. What she saw there wasn’t what she was expecting. But it wasn’t just concern for her that had etched the dark circles under them, there was something else.
“You look tired,” she said, as she ran the tip of her finger along his face, following the line of his squared jaw. Stubble pricked and tickled her skin, encouraging her to continue her exploration. After being attacked in the warehouse, she’d shut down her awareness, just so she could block out her emotions. If she allowed herself to feel something now, she’d have to feel it all, and she wasn’t sure she was ready for that.
Jon captured her hand and pressed it to his lips. “I didn’t know how to find you. A security officer told me about the warehouse fire. When I got there, they told me to check the medi-evac. I heard you calling me.”
Had she? She couldn’t remember now. In fact a lot of the attack was hazy, without clear definition, like waking up and trying to remember a dream. “I couldn’t save them. I tried and I couldn’t.” Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision and making her feel ashamed.
Emotions were to be controlled at all times. That’s how Zina had trained her, and that’s what she had always fallen back on. But now, it wasn’t working.
“Let it go,” Jonathan said. “It’s all right.”
“No.” She shifted and turned her back to him. “Stop. Just go. Come back in the morning.” She wasn’t ready yet. If she let it out now, she’d never be able to stop. Burying her face in the pillow, she moved as far as she could to the edge of the bed, hoping Jon would take the hint and leave her alone. But he didn’t. His arm went around her and pulled her close to him. Spooning himself against her back, he hugged her tight.
“Let it go,” he whispered, his breath hot against her ear. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“No, Jon!” Pulling wasn’t helping. His grip held her fast. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Don’t talk. Just let it go. All of it.”
A warm, wet kiss against her neck sent pings radiating through her. Trembling, she bit her lip, trying to hold back the emotion churning inside her. “I can’t. Not now. Later.”
“No. Now.” He moved his hand along her arm and intertwined his fingers with hers. “I’ve got you. Let it go.”
Heat from his body enveloped her, wrapping her in safety. But he couldn’t protect her from what she’d seen and experienced. That was her burden and she couldn’t be free of it. Spent, she finally gave up and relaxed against him.

Victoria travels across the galaxy by portal in COSMIC SUTRA #MidWeekTease #LGBT
Happy Wednesday! It’s time for Mid Week Tease. For today’s post, I’m sharing another excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA, which is part of the First Ladylove anthology.
Setup: Victoria has left Earth to study at Thanh Academy on the other side of the galaxy. She is about to step through the final portal which will take her to Thanh. She has no idea what to expect, as she’s never left Earth before.
With a final step, Victoria entered the portal, the technology ripping her body into millions of particles. She cried out from the pressure, the pain more intense than with the first unit, stretching her body past its limits, her screams lost in the vastness of space. No one could hear her.
A vacuum pulled at her, dragging her across the galaxy a great deal faster than the speed of light, toward the technology that would piece her back together. The journey seemed to take forever, nothing to see beyond the blinding lights, no sound other than the suction from her destination.
Victoria slammed into a solid wall that vanished as fast as it had materialized. She fell to her knees, gasping for air. She’d arrived, hopefully at the right destination. There had been a few instances where nearby portals had grabbed a traveler, sucking them into an unintended target, but those instances were uncommon and the victims rarely heard from again.
Finally able to catch her breath, she glanced around, just to be sure she had arrived at the academy and not on a planet where the beings considered her lunch. By the time anyone had realized the mistake, she would be in the stomach of an alien creature, rolling around in its stomach acid.
Beings rushed to and fro around her, bustling to unknown destinations. Many appeared humanoid, with skin varying in color like a jumbo box of crayons. Others had tentacles and tails or antennae, with their bodies sectioned into three parts like an insect. Some bundled up in clothing thick enough to wear to the arctic, and even more wore nothing, exposing their sexual parts to those around them. Victoria blushed and glanced up.
The technology ripped her body into a million pieces. #Excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA by Jessica E. Subject

~ COSMIC SUTRA ~
When Victoria is offered a scholarship to attend Thanh Academy for her last year of university, she jumps at the opportunity. Nothing could be more practical in her psychology studies than to travel to the other side of the universe and live amongst the life forms she strives to learn from.
Upon her arrival, she is met with hostility. Convincing the other students she is not like those from Earth who came before her takes time, but eventually she is embraced by a small group of friends, including a sexy female alien she fantasizes about on a daily basis.
Based on past experience, will Victoria keep her lust hidden deep inside to prevent losing a friend? Or will she confess her feelings to Kaye and possibly find her one true love?
Available in the First Lady Love anthology

The black-eyed wolf, the other half of his soul, regarded him, lips curled away to reveal sharp white teeth, thick gray hackles raised across his shoulders. This is how we should be, always. Strong, protected, invulnerable.
Searching inside for the pack bonds tying her and the family to the alpha, she brushed against them mentally. A wash of warmth flowed in response, and she took a deep breath. It didn’t matter what time of day or night she sought the bond, reassurance always came.
She’d never seen anything like him in her life. Naked from the waist up, the slabs of muscle across his chest gleamed with sweat. Thick hair was pulled tight in a braid, not dissimilar to her own, but it shone as black as a raven’s wing.
“Go home, Little Red. I’m way too much Big Bad Wolf for you to handle.”

“You must be cursing the fates, Ven. I’m a poor excuse for a mate.” She sighed.
The irony of her words twisted like a knife in his heart.
Feeling giddy and shockingly brazen, she boldly met his eyes. The promise in them made her gulp at the realization she’d started something she didn’t know how to finish. Time to make a tactical retreat before she pushed him too far.
“Want to tell me what you think you are doing, Caitlyn?” His low growl made her sway, the urge to lean against him and rub up against his hot hard-muscled chest almost too much to resist.
“You’re nothing like them, Ven. I don’t care about the family you come from. I care about the family we can be—together.” She reached for him, begging silently for him to take her hand, close the gulf he’d opened between them.
“Boy, if I’d known you were throwing yourself a pity party, I’d have ordered some balloons.” Gee shook his head.
His amber and dark wood scent teased her nose, opening her senses, bringing calm and balance. This man, this mate of hers, would always catch her when she fell.

“I said, what do you want?” Ven sounded furious as he took a step towards her and Caitlyn shrank back, dropping the cooler as she raised her hands as though trying to ward him off. The box tipped over, spilling its contents across the scruffy lot and the man swore again. He stepped around the mess of food and drinks, advancing rapidly and she caught his scent, amber and dark wood beneath a layer of fresh sweat. Her wolf, normally so quiet, surged forward and she realized in terror that she was practically toe-to-toe with her mate. And he was mean and angry.
Knowing what it was to suffer at the hands of a cruel man, she turned tail and ran as fast as she could. She plunged towards the relatively safety of the trees, kicking off her shoes and dragging her clothes free as she fled.
Her wolf was whining at her to stop, but she pushed on into the heavy brush. Pausing to shed her jeans, she crouched, letting the shift take her over but making sure she retained enough control to force the wolf to keep running. The wolf howled, desperate to turn back, to catch again the glorious scent of her mate and offer her throat in submission to his dominant presence.
A heavy crash behind had her doubling her efforts and her paws scrabbled over the soft ground, seeking purchase as she ran as though the hounds of hell were on her heels. She risked a glance over her shoulder and an involuntary yip of fright loosed from her throat. An enormous gray wolf was gaining on her with every stride, the snarl on his face more terrifying than the scowl he’d worn in his human form.
She put on another burst of speed, her wolf suddenly in accordance that escape rather than submission was the best idea. Dodging around a massive pine tree, trunk broader than her back, she pulled up short at the remains of another fallen trunk that suddenly blocked her path. A snarl set her in motion again and her claws scratched at the bark as she desperately tried to clamber over the downed tree. The wood was soft, rotten in places and her front legs slid from under her as a huge set of jaws clamped around the thick fur at the back of her neck.
