Book Review: Dancing in the Dark by Robyn Bavati

When I first started reading this book, I thought it was a paranormal mystery for some reason. I had read the blurb, but because I’ve read several books concerning ballet that were paranormal as of late, and the cover looked suitable for a paranormal book, I was convinced there was going to be one or other paranormal element. I have no idea why though because when I reread the blurb, there’s nothing whatsoever to indicate anything out of the ordinary is going on. Anyway, paranormal or not, I...

Book Review: New Zealand with a Hobbit Botherer by John and Annette Gisby

I’ve never been to New Zealand before, but it’s one of my favorite must-see places, next to Egypt and China. So when I got the chance to read New Zealand with a Hobbit Botherer, which combines two of my favorite things, New Zealand and Lord of the Rings, I had to read it. The book is well out of my comfort zone: it’s the first travel book I’ve read to date. But I enjoyed reading it, and I might try out a few more travel books in the future. John and Annette have a quirky, intriguing writing s...

Friday Film Review: The Lincoln Lawyer

I’m a huge fan of courtroom thrillers. Part of this is because I study law myself and I love seeing the mechanics of cases, the attorneys, the witnesses, the person on trial, etcetera. But from all courtroom thrillers I’ve seen so far, The Lincoln Lawyer is one of my favorites. The story is original and sometimes mind-boggling, the acting performance is outstanding, the script itself is strong and supsenseful.

Defense lawyer Mick Haller, played by Matthew McConaughey, is as smooth as a lawyer...

Book Review: Adventures of a Ghost Hunter by Adam Nori

Adam Nori is the founding member of a ghost hunter research group. He’s been hunting ghosts for years, and has been interesting by the paranormal ever since he was a young kid. He already gave parapsychology classes by the time he finished high school. Some people just have an uncanny interest for the paranormal, and I guess Adam Nori is one of them. I’m impressed by his track record and how he managed to found a paranormal research group and find team members who were genuinely interested in...

Book Review: Ash by James Herbert

First of all, I didn’t read any of the other books in the David Ash series. I came across this one in my local bookshop and I picked it up because the synopsis intrigued me. A creepy, haunted castle. A parapsychologist with a disturbing past. A secret, elite organization harboring more secrets than the Illuminati. So far, it all sounded good. The only downside was the execution. I enjoyed the premise, but this book was so sloppily executed I had trouble getting to the end.

The plot is actually...

Book Review: Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black

I rated this book a 2-star total, and I think that’s being mild. I have no idea why anyone even decided to publish this crap. There are tons and tons of potential manuscripts out there that are ten times as well-written as this book, that have characters with actual depth and a storyline that makes sense. Dance of Shadows has neither of those, and yet it was picked up. The book doesn’t even look edited. It has major flaws screaming from the pages. The writing is mediocre, but unfortunately th...

Memories flashed before Maegwin’s eyes: the grinning faces of Lord Meryk Hounsey’s soldiers, the hiss and crackle of flames, the terrible stench of seared flesh and burning hair. But most of all, she heard her sisters screaming. Endlessly screaming.

Maegwin had taken four lives that day. But it was not enough. Could never be enough...
