Meet author Mary Pat Johns
Mary Pat Johns is a fellow Scrivenings Press author, and her new book is coming out today!! She’ll tell us more about Glitter and the Grouch later in the blog post. But for now, welcome to the blog, Mary Pat! I know you went to Brazil recently. What was that for?
Mary Pat – I have lived in Texas all my life. Recently, however, we flew to Brazil for a wedding since our son married a Brazilian woman. Goodness! Brazil wasn’t even on my bucket list, but God does mysterious things.
Jen – Yes, He does! Tell me about the books you’ve written. I know Glitter and the Grouch is book #3 in a series.
Mary Pat – I write Contemporary Romance with a strong Christian thread. The first two books of my series, Romance in Valiant, are published with Scrivenings Press. Glitter and the Grouch is the third book of the series and the only novella. It spotlights two minor characters from books 1 & 2, and the setting is an enormously popular event, the Texas Water Safari. I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to write about the great Texas River race. So much fun!
Mary Pat and researchJen – I bet that required a lot of research!
Mary Pat – Glitter and the Grouch did require a lot of research. I’ve only kayaked a bit, and the main characters paddled in a canoe. Fortunately, I had a connection to a man who has raced for 30+ years. His book about his experiences stayed on my desk throughout the writing process—all marked-up and dog-eared pages. It was truly a privilege to give him a copy of the finished product.
Jen – I’m sure he was excited! Tell us about your writing habits.
Mary Pat – I write most afternoons unless I’m on deadline. Then it’s all the time, aside from sleeping. I’m a mix of both plotter and pantser—I need to know at least one of the main characters and have the middle and end scenes in mind before I start. Getting the story started is always a challenge for me.
More from Mary Pat Johns
Silas only has one choice: his sanity or his future.
Silas and Nat don’t get along, but they can’t leave each other alone. When a prank goes terribly wrong at their workplace, they face an impossible choice.
They must compete in a canoe race to prove they can work together or forfeit their futures at Peeps. Good thing quitting isn’t in their DNA because their boss isn’t backing down an inch. He assures them they can accomplish anything they set their minds to, even if it means covering 260 miles of river. There’s only one catch—they have to be in the same boat.
Will they reach deep inside to find out what they’re made of? Or will they succumb to the physical rigors of the event and the machinations of a controlling ex?
Jen – I would love to be a plotter.
I have read your bio, and your son was in the military. How did that influence what you write?
Mary Pat – When our son returned from deployment in Afghanistan, his adjustment back into civilian life wasn’t easy. It gave me a desire to write about how people move forward after traumatic events. That’s why I created the town of Valiant. It’s a strong place where people find the support they need to thrive.
Jen – That’s wonderful! It provides readers with a place of hope for sure. I always love to know more about authors in their “normal” life. What are some fun facts about you?
Fun Facts about Mary PatMary Pat – I have coffee first thing in the morning, then hot tea the rest of the day. I love crossword puzzles and usually work 1-2 in the evenings, though family time is my favorite. Always and forever, my husband and I are dog people. We have two spoiled dachshunds whose antics provide lots of humor to our quiet household.
Jen – Animals are the best, aren’t they? Tell readers how to find you.
Mary Pat – My social media platforms are FaceBook and Instagram. I write a weekly column for our local newspaper. I post the column under the Blog tab on my website. It comprises chatty articles about the daily happenings in my life, stories about my grandchildren, and my writing world. It always ends with a faith message. My website is www.marypatjohns.com. Also, I have a monthly newsletter. When a person subscribes to it, there’s the option of downloading a free short story. It’s the prequel to the Valiant series and explains why the main character and his best bud are the way they are. Here’s my newsletter link: https://prnt.sc/P_ZMgoPwSSYd
Jen – Thanks for being on the blog and sharing more about you and your books!
Meet author Mary Pat Johns!
Mary Pat Johns’ writing career began once she retired from years of teaching speech and writing. She’s written devotions for an online publication and had short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul. She currently writes a weekly faith column for the local newspaper. Countin’ On Jesse, her first novel debuted in 2023, and book 2 of the Valiant series, Lovin’ On Red, released in release in 2024. God put it in her heart to tell stories of brave veterans and their reintegration into civilian life after suffering the traumas of war.
She lives in South Texas with her husband and their two dapple dachshunds. Her grown children and five grandchildren are useful sorts who keep her grounded with her reading/writing obsession. You can find her at the gym, at her computer, or reading a good book.

Essential Types of Editing Every Novel Needs
Editing – the word can be a writer’s worst nightmare. But, there are essential types of editing that every novel needs.
A good editor shapes and refines our stories into their best possible form. In this post, I’m providing a breakdown of the essential types of editing every novel should undergo to ensure it’s polished and ready for publication:
Developmental editingDevelopmental editing focuses on the big-picture elements of your novel. This stage addresses:
Plot and Structure – Ensuring the plot is coherent, engaging, and follows a logical progression. It also involves checking for plot holes or inconsistencies.
Character Development – Making sure characters are well-rounded, believable, and consistent throughout the story. This includes examining their motivations, arcs, and relationships.
Pacing – Pacing involves managing the rhythm and flow of the narrative to maintain reader engagement. The editor helps assess whether the story progresses at an appropriate pace.
Line editingLine editing dives into the finer details of your prose. It involves:
Language Use: Refining sentence structure and style to enhance clarity, readability, and impact.Tone and Voice: Ensuring the narrative voice is consistent and appropriate for the story and its genre.Dialogue: Checking dialogue for authenticity and relevance, ensuring it advances the plot and reveals character insights effectively.Copy editingCopy editing focuses on the technical aspects of writing, including:
Grammar and Syntax – Correcting errors in grammar, punctuation, and syntax.
Spelling and Language Consistency: Ensuring consistent spelling and usage of language throughout the manuscript.
Fact-Checking: Verifying factual information to maintain accuracy, especially in non-fiction or historically-based novels.
ProofreadingProofreading is the final stage before publication. Proofreaders look for errors – identifying and correcting any remaining typos, spelling mistakes, or minor errors; formatting – ensuring the manuscript follows publishing guidelines in terms of layout, font, and spacing; consistency check – verifying that all changes made during previous edits have been implemented consistently throughout the manuscript.
What is your experience? The first draft is black and white. Editing gives the story color. ~ Emma Hill
Each of these types of editing plays a critical role in refining your novel and preparing it for publication. Have you ever hired an editor? What was your experience?
Some authors may hire professionals for each stage, others may choose to tackle multiple types of editing themselves. Regardless of the approach, thorough editing is essential to ensure your novel meets high standards of quality and resonates with your audience effectively.
By investing time and effort into these editing stages, you’re not just polishing your prose but also enhancing the overall reading experience of your novel.

Meet author Jenny Carlisle
Jen – I love interviewing authors on my blog! Today, Jenny Carlisle, a fellow Scrivenings Press author joins us! Jenny, tell us a bit about your background.

Jenny – I grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas with my divorced mom and my younger sister. The church was a tremendous support for my mom, and a second family for me. When she married a man from Arkansas, our new life began, and I started school in Bryant, Arkansas just in time for my senior year. I married a member of the same high school class and found a new church family with him. I feel blessed to have so many Godly people in my life, and I am sure it influenced my choice of Christian fiction when I began to put the stories in my head down on paper.
Jen – I’ve read your story of how you got into writing. Share it with our readers!
Jenny – I was bitten by the writing bug in elementary school when a poem I wrote was displayed in the hallway. I loved English classes in school and continued to write every time I got the chance.
I took journalism classes in college but got married before I finished a degree. While I waited on kids at band practices and scout meetings, my stories were relegated to spiral notebooks. I joined writing groups, attended conferences, entered , and even won some contests.

More about Jenny’s writing experiences
Jenny – A friend who published a regional magazine called Ouachite Life asked me to write a monthly column. The short non-fiction articles in Turn, Turn, Turn gained a following. After accumulating years of these columns, I sought the help of a friend to self-publish two books.
After years of hearing “No, thank you,” a new publisher called Scrivenings Press accepted and published my first fiction project, Hope Takes the Reins in March of 2022. Two more books about families who met through the rodeo followed. Faith Moves Mountains and Love Never Fails complete the Crossroads series, described as Contemporary Women’s Fiction with a thread of romance. Along the way, two other Arkansas authors joined me to write a collection of Christmas novellas called A Gift for All Time. My story, Rejoicing with Joy features some of the same characters from Crossroads.
Jenny Carlisle and researchJen – Did you have to do research for your stories?
Jenny – As a quirky combination of a plotter and a pantser, I have a goal in mind, but must stop along the trail quite often to research something that confronts my characters. I have watched videos about changing truck tires, exploding hot water heaters, and tagging cattle to prevent theft. In the process of talking to experts, I have chatted with an official at the Arkansas Cattleman’s Association, and a man who builds fishing boats that are completely accessible to folks who utilize wheelchairs. Never a dull moment while I’m creating a story!
Jen – Yes, I can imagine! I love all the different things and people you’ve researched!
Jenny’s reading choicesJen – What do you enjoy reading?
Jenny – I read a wide range of things growing up. I remember in my school library starting one side and checking something out of each section of shelves until I reached the other side. This introduced me to science, history, geography, biographies and many different authors. I loved Little Women and Little Men by Louisa May Alcott and then the Nancy Drew Mysteries. As an adult, I typically don’t get on the “bandwagon” of reading the most talked about books of the day. Instead, I gravitate to escape, and light reading. Cozy mysteries like “The Cat Who …” by Lillian Braun (I even wrote her a letter once and received a response) and everything I could find by Mary Stewart. “Touch Not the Cat” and more.
Jen – “The Cat Who” mysteries are fantastic! What else do you read?
Jenny – When I read “Christy” by Catherine Marshall and then a friend suggested Janette Oke, I discovered Christian fiction and found my niche.
My favorite authors these days write both contemporary and historical, and I have even enjoyed some fantasy. For historical, Tara Johnson and Cynthia Roemer. Contemporary, Cynthia Ruchti, Rachel Hauck.
I also love everything written by my novella collaborators: Tonya Ashley (historical) and Ellen Withers (time-slip mysteries).
Jen – You can’t go wrong with any of those authors!! I just read Ellen Wither’s Show Me Betrayal – great book!
Find Jenny Carlisle online!Jen – Jenny, tell us a little about your platform; where can we find you online?
Jenny – I have had a presence on Facebook for many years, both personally, and as Jenny Carlisle, author. The friends and contacts I have acquired there are treasured. The one thing that my posts have in common is that I try to remain positive and encouraging. Since becoming published, I have formed smaller invitation-only groups as the Launch Day of each new book approaches. I have also enjoyed doing some live videos, sometimes sharing my morning prayers from my back porch. Response has been great. I occasionally have contests to give away one of my books, or a prize package of recycled or regifted treasures from my own book and knick-knack shelves. My readers know that everything I share is from my heart and will never conflict with my mission of spreading the love of Jesus.
You can also find me at my website Jenny McLeod Carlisle – Seeking, Waiting, Walking.
Jen – I share your mission! What are some fun facts your readers would love to know? Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verses? What do you do in your free time? Cats or dog?
Jenny’s fun facts
Jenny – Fun facts:
Tea: Hot Earl Gray decaf, or unsweetened Iced tea. Now and then, I love a good decaf skinny vanilla latte as a treat.
Favorite season: 1. Christmas and a close #2: Razorback football season.
Bible verse(s): My web page and my newsletter feature these three. Matthew 6:33, Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added. Isaiah 40:31, But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles. Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love [a]mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
Define free time. I am retired. But, as a couple, hubby and I love to travel to spend time with our kids and grands, or just drive around our beautiful state. When I have alone time, you will find me sitting on the porch, reading or working on my latest hair-brained craft project. Right now, it is an embroidered pillow personalized for each of my grandchildren.
Cats or dogs? I have owned and loved both, but right now we don’t own either. Makes traveling so much easier. I think my introverted personality is more suited to a cat since they usually require less attention beyond what they consider as basic needs.
Jen – Thank you, Jenny, for being on my blog! It was fun to get to know you better.
Jenny – Thanks so much for hosting me for this interview. I hope your readers will give my fiction a try. May God bless each day of your journey.

Crafting a Writer’s Mood Board: Inspiration and Insight for Your Creative Journey
The first time I heard about a mood board was at a writer’s retreat with my now-publisher, Scrivenings Press. I had not only never heard of one, but I had no idea how to do it. Being a total “newbie” and working on two totally different genres, I did mine about myself as a writer.
That mood board inspired me for months!

As writers, we often draw inspiration from different sources to breathe life into our stories, characters, and settings. Mood boards are effective tools for showcasing our creativity. For someone like me who isn’t artsy at all, making one was fun! Plus, I got to use scissors and glue, so …
In this blog post, we’ll explore what a mood board is, why writers should consider creating one, and how to effectively craft your own.
What is a mood board?A mood board is a visual collage. We collect images, textures, colors, and other elements that evoke a particular mood, theme, or aesthetic. When we put it together – whether on actual poster board or digitally – it serves as a visual representation of what you want to convey in your writing.
Mood boards have been used for a long time, especially in creative industries, including fashion, interior design, and advertising. They help to gather and communicate visual ideas and inspirations.
Why should writers create a mood board?Creating a mood board can benefit writers in several ways:
Visual Inspiration: Like I said, I am not artsy, but making a mood board gives me a tangible reference point for capturing the visual aspects of my story. You can include settings, characters, and themes. Seeing these pictures spark creativity and help you develop a vivid and immersive world for your readers.
Setting Tone and Atmosphere: Using images that reflect the mood and atmosphere of your story, helps you establish a consistent tone throughout your novel.
Character Development: Visual representations can help flesh out your characters’ appearances, personalities, and motivations. Seeing images that embody your characters’ traits can deepen your understanding and portrayal of them in your writing. **Tip – I use Pinterest for this too!
Other ways mood boards help writers:Plot and Setting Visualization: Organizing images of landscapes, architecture, and other settings relevant to your story can aid in world-building and ensure consistency in your descriptions.
Creative Focus and Direction: Creating a mood board encourages focused brainstorming and helps you stay connected to the essence of your story’s vision, preventing creative “drift” or inconsistency.
How to create a writer’s mood board:Define Your Theme or Concept– Determine the central themes, emotions, and visual elements you want to explore and convey in your writing.Gather Inspirational Images– Use online platforms like Pinterest, Tumblr, or even physical magazines to gather images that resonate with your story’s theme, characters, settings, and mood.Curate and Organize– Arrange and organize your collected images on a physical board (e.g., poster or foam board) or digitally using tools like Canva, Adobe Spark, or PowerPoint. Add Textures and Text– Include textures, fabrics, or patterns that evoke sensory details relevant to your story. Include quotes or descriptions from your manuscript that complement the images and enhance the mood.Review and Refine– Step back and review your mood board periodically. Ensure it accurately reflects your story’s vision and makes you feel connected to your narrative world.**My tip – Enjoy making it. Let your creativity show. Don’t be afraid to try things. This mood board is for YOU!
Show me your mood boards!I’d love to see your mood boards! Show them in the comments and describe what they mean to you. Below are two of mine that I created on Canva.

A writer’s mood board is more than just a collection of images; it’s a tool that can ignite your creativity, deepen your storytelling, and provide clarity and direction throughout your writing process.
Whether you’re embarking on a new project or seeking to enrich an existing manuscript, crafting one offers a visual roadmap to guide your imagination and bring your literary visions to life.

Meet author Delores Topliff
I’m excited to have another Scrivenings Press author on my blog! I met Delores Topliff through the local ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) chapter, and she’s an inspirational woman. I think you’ll enjoy getting to know her better!
Jen – Hi, Delores, and welcome to my blog! I’d love to know more about your background.
Delores – I grew up in Vancouver, Washington, along the Columbia River at the end of the Oregon Trail, which has influenced my writing.
Jen – From someone who has always lived in the South, that sounds amazing! And a writer’s paradise. Tell us about what you’ve written.
**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Some of Delores Topliff’s books!
Delores – So far I’ve published four children’s Christian picture books (two winning international prizes), four historic novels, and my A Traveling Grandma’s Guide to Israel: Adventures, Wit, and Wisdom, describing Israel’s special people and places learned during my nine lengthy trips there over forty years. It’s fully half memoir, so anyone reading it will know me well and find lots of humor.
Jen – I’ve heard so many wonderful things about your Guide to Israel! I can’t wait to read it! I know you’ve written many books. Tell us about some more!
Delores – My first novel, Books Afloat, presents an idealist young woman providing a floating library boat up and down the Columbia River for residents who don’t have books. Washington’s Governor invites her to do undercover surveillance with a network of volunteers to monitor Japanese activity on the river. The funny thing is at age nine, I intended to be that girl—and that scenario turned into this fun and suspenseful book based on true WWII events. I love doing research and did lots!
Its sequel, Strong Currents, continues WWII events with the same colorful river residents plus adds a hero invalid home after Midway and the German niece of a local hero who encounters shocking prejudice and an attempt on her life.
Wilderness Wife also shows my end-of-the-Oregon Trail origins. After four children and seventeen years of wilderness marriage, courageous half-native Marguerite Wadin MacKay is abandoned by her explorer husband so he can go to Montreal (Canada) to claim fame and a society wife. Marguerite believes her life is over until Dr. John McLoughlin, nine years her junior, persuades her to risk loving again. She is a real, amazing, and inspiring woman who seems like a friend. She and John overcame many hardships, established Fort Vancouver together in 1825, and are honored as the Mother and Father of the Pacific Northwest.
Delores’s Christmas novelJen – I’m sure your research for all of these was fascinating! I’d love to hear more about your Christmas novel.

Delores – The plot for Christmas Tree Wars came one Sunday morning as I drove along a Minnesota road with a Christmas tree farm on one side and a hayfield with one single Norway spruce on the other. I instantly received the entire storyline and got busy writing.
And that paves the way for this Christmas in August post. My book’s back cover says, “Christmas is meant to be a time of goodwill, but there’s no peace between two neighboring Christmas tree farmers involved in a longstanding feud, (one a Swede and the other a Norwegian). Can this year be different with a holiday romance and surprise ending tossed in?
When the financial planner son and forestry major niece of feuding Christmas tree farmers come home to help their families in crisis, it takes Christmas tree wars to a whole new level. As the young people seek success by competing to provide a national Christmas tree, romance fills the air.”
Jen – That sounds so fun! I appreciate you being on the blog, Delores.
Delores – Thanks for hosting me, Jen. I look forward to reader questions and comments.
Delores Topliff bio:Delores Topliff grew up in Washington State but married a Canadian so enjoys dual citizenship. She teaches university online, travels, and published four children’s books before writing historic novels and A Traveling Grandma’s Guide to Israel: Adventures, Wit, and Wisdom, released last year. Delores loves her two doctor sons and five grandchildren and divides her year between a central Minnesota farm and the gentle climate and people in Northeastern Mississippi.

Finding Inspiration: Ways to Fuel Your Novel Writing Journey
Finding inspiration is something we writers often discuss. Writers face many obstacles. When you hit a wall, are up against a deadline, or are just looking for fresh ideas, where do you go for inspiration?
I recently conducted a survey on social media asking how writers find inspiration. Do you find yourself in these answers?
readingmusicresearchwriter friendsgardeningjournalingprayingwalks/natureWriting a novel requires inspiration and motivation. And sometimes it’s hard to come by either one (or both). Whether you’re working on your first novel or seeking to reignite your passion for writing, here are several effective strategies to inspire your creative process:
Reading helps in finding inspirationRead Voraciously – Reading widely across genres sparks new ideas. Books that resonate with your interests and genres you haven’t explored before both get your creative juices flowing.
Reading and writing, like everything else, improve with practice. ~ Margaret Atwood

Explore Real-Life Experiences – Draw inspiration from your own life or the experiences of others. Personal stories often provide authentic material that can enrich your characters and plot with depth and realism.
One of my favorite places is Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach. And I’m using it in Book #2 in the Empty-nesters Cozy Mystery Series – Where’s the Quetzal? The tunnel in this picture is from the fort!
Keep a Writing Journal – Use your journal to capture ideas, observations, and snippets of dialogue. Jot down inspirations that come to you throughout the day, whether during a walk in nature, a conversation with a friend, or while daydreaming. Reviewing your journal can reveal connections and insights that inspire new storylines or scenes.
Engage in Creative Exercises – Use writing prompts, exercises, or challenges to stimulate your creativity. Prompts are excellent springboards for exploring different narrative styles, character dynamics, or plot twists.
Immerse Yourself in Nature – Nature has a soothing effect that can clear your mind and inspire creativity. Take walks in parks, hike trails, or simply sit outdoors to observe the beauty of your surroundings. Take pictures and free-write what you’re feeling.
Other ways of finding inspiration:Listen to Music – Music evokes emotions and imagery. Create playlists that reflect the mood or atmosphere of scenes you’re writing or wish to explore.Experiment with Different Writing Locations – Changing your writing environment can invigorate your creativity. Visit local coffee shops, libraries, or quiet corners of your home to find a space where you feel inspired and focused. Alternating between different locations can prevent monotony and encourage fresh perspectives.Seek Inspiration from Art and Media – Explore visual art, films, documentaries, or theater productions for inspiration. Visual storytelling and thematic elements in art forms beyond literature can stimulate ideas for character development, plot twists, or thematic exploration in your novel.Connect with Other Writers – Engage with fellow writers through writing groups, workshops, or online communities. Share ideas, seek feedback, and discuss challenges and successes in your writing journey. Collaborating with peers can provide encouragement, accountability, and fresh insights that fuel your creative energy. This is my favorite way to find inspiration. What’s your favorite way to find inspiration?Writing a novel is an ongoing journey that requires curiosity, exploration, and a willingness to embrace creativity from various sources. Incorporating these strategies into your writing routine, helps you nurture inspiration, overcome creative blocks, and bring depth and vitality to your story. Reflecting on your writing goals, aspirations, and the impact you wish your novel to have on readers also keeps you inspired. Remember, inspiration can be found in unexpected places—embrace the journey of discovery as you craft your novel with passion and purpose.

Meet author E.V. Sparrow
Jen – I’m so happy to have author E.V. Sparrow on my blog! Tell us about yourself.
E.V. – I was born and raised in the Foothills of California. Small town girl, but the town grew in the 70s after a feature in Sunset magazine. Ha! We hiked, played in creeks and ponds, rode horses or ponies, chased calves. We had 4H clubs in our agriculture classes in schools.
The most unusual place I lived at was on an Israeli kibbutz whose commerce was apples, chickens, eggs, cotton — I can see a rural theme in my life. My other terrific place was when I worked for the U.S. Army at a base in Bavaria. Gorgeous country. We skied, played racquetball, went on tours around the country, and my dream of visiting Neuschwanstein Castle came true. What increased my faith in God was when I accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ at age 15 and began my relationship with Him. He’s always done the unexpected, and that’s my tagline for my work: Encounter God’s Unexpected Presence.
More about E.V. SparrowJen – I love your tagline and am a bit envious of your travels! Tell us about what you’ve written.

E.V. – I began as a short story writer with my travel stories published in 16 anthologies. My critique group urged me to write a book. Reluctance to tackle a huge project held me back until I discovered some interesting material from my dad’s father’s family. That’s what I’m fictionalizing in my current historical fiction books.
My new release through Celebrate Lit Publishing, Muldoon’s Misfortunes, Book 1 of 3 in the Those Resilient Muldoons series, is slated for launch on 7/16.
I’m currently writing Book 2, Madam Muldoon’s Garden releasing next July. I also have a self-published prelude novella for readers, Muldoon’s Minnesota Darling.
Muldoon’s Misfortunes is on preorder as an eBook for $2.99 from my publisher and be sure to fill out the form to receive exclusive goodies from me!
Tell us about your writing habits E.V. Sparrow!E.V. – I write best in the morning, but lately with my launch I’m scrambling to fit writing into my daily life. It seems to be in the afternoon and on weekends. I’ve got 9 chapters to finish in Book 2. I mentioned my ideas come from actual events or relationships. I end up plotting, outlining because it’s historical fiction and details must fit, and letting my characters drive the dialogue. That’s the most enjoyable for me as an author, when my characters add the flavor. Often, a character I hadn’t imagines steps in and demands to be included. Ha!
Jen – Did you have to do research for your story?
E.V. – Definitely. For my main character, Mick Muldoon, it was discovering some stunning court documents in Ancestry. Of course, I had to include it. Mick is the representative character of my great-grandfather. In my Author Notes, I explain this and also include the truth and fictional aspects of his story.

A short story writer turned novelist E.V. Sparrow signed a three-book contract with Celebrate Lit Publishing. She published a new HF eBook novella, Muldoon’s Minnesota Darling. She served on missions, worship team, prayer teams, Single’s Ministry, and in the Divorce Care program. Sparrow enjoys leading readers to Encounter God’s Unexpected Presence.
Connect with E.V. Sparrow on all of her social media links, including eBook and preorder of Book 1, Muldoon’s Misfortunes – HERE .Thanks for being on the blog, E.V. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you better!

Designing Your Book Cover Using Canva: A Step-by-Step Guide
To complement my blog post about judging book covers, I wanted to provide a post on designing your book cover using Canva!
Any author wants a captivating book cover that draws readers of that genre. Canva is my favorite graphic design tool—and no, this is not a Canva ad!
Canva has the tools needed to design professional-looking book covers without design experience (I always run covers by my husband or my sister). Follow this step-by-step guide to design your own book cover using Canva:
Step 1 in Designing Your Book Cover Using Canva: Create a Canva Account1. Visit Canva’s website and create a free account or log in if you already have one. I pay for Canva Pro, but be sure to read all of the ins and outs of using Canva and copyright infringement.
2. Choose Design Type: On the Canva homepage, click on “Create a design” and select “Book cover” from the available templates.

Notice that you have different kinds of book covers. You can also scroll down on that list and insert a custom size. (See my note at the bottom of the post about cover sizes.)
Step 2: Select a Layout and Template1. Browse Templates: Canva offers a variety of pre-designed book cover templates. Browse through the options or search for specific themes, genres, or styles that match your book’s content.

2. Choose a Layout: Click on a template that resonates with your book’s genre and theme. You can customize every aspect of the template later, so focus on finding a layout that suits your vision. **Be sure to title your creation! Just click in the area I circled where it says Untitled Design.
Step 3: Customize Your Book Cover1. Upload Images: If you have specific images, illustrations, or artwork for your book cover, upload them to Canva. Click on the “Uploads” tab on the left sidebar and drag your files into the uploader.
2. Editing Text and Choosing Your Font(s):
Title and Author Name: Double-click on the text boxes on the template to edit your book’s title and author name. Choose fonts that complement your book’s genre and enhance readability. Text Effects: Experiment with text effects such as bold, italics, or shadow to make your title and author name stand out.**My suggestion on designing your book cover using Canva – go on Amazon or into a local bookstore and look at covers of the genre you write in. Each genre has specific things that readers are used to seeing. For example, I recognize cozy mysteries easily because I know what that genre cover is like.
3. Adjust Colors and Background:
– Color Palette: Use Canva’s color palette tool to select colors that harmonize with your book’s theme and genre. Click on elements of your design to change their colors accordingly.

– Background: Modify the background color or choose from Canva’s library of background images and patterns. Ensure the background doesn’t overwhelm your title and other text.
4. Add Elements and Icons:
– Illustrations and Icons: Explore Canva’s collection of icons and illustrations to enhance your book cover design. Drag and drop them onto your canvas, then resize and position them as needed.
– Frames and Shapes: Use frames and shapes to create borders, highlight text, or add visual interest to your cover design.
Step 4: Review and Refine1. Zoom In and Out: Use the zoom feature to examine details closer and ensure all elements are properly aligned and spaced. **Always do this!!
2. Get Feedback: Share your design with trusted friends, fellow authors, or potential readers to gather feedback on its effectiveness and appeal. **Always do this too!!
Step 5: Download and Export Your Book Cover1. Download Your Design: Once you’re satisfied with your book cover design, click on the Share button at the top right corner and click on Download in the dropdown.

2. Choose File Format: Select your preferred file format (PNG, JPG, PDF print) and resolution. Canva offers high-resolution options suitable for both digital and print formats.
Step 6: Additional Tips for Success in Designing Your Book Cover Using Canva1. Stay On Brand: Ensure your book cover design reflects the tone, genre, and themes of your book. You want to be consistent as that helps build recognition and attracts your target audience.
2. Use High-Quality Images: If you use photographs or illustrations, opt for high-resolution images to maintain clarity and visual appeal.
3. Check Dimensions: Verify that your book cover dimensions meet the requirements of your chosen publishing platform or printer. For example, KDP offers template sizes.

**Note – I designed my book cover for Birds Alive! Then my publisher did her stuff to it to have the correct size, etc. But I know plenty of Indie authors who design their book covers using Canva.
ConclusionDesigning your book cover using Canva allows you to unleash your creativity and create what you think your book cover should look like.
By following these step-by-step instructions and using Canva’s amazing collection of tools, you can design a professional-quality book cover that attracts readers and effectively communicates your book’s essence. Embrace the process, experiment with different designs, and enjoy bringing your vision to life. Happy designing!

Meet author Donna Wichelman
Jen – I’m so happy to have Donna Wichelman on my blog! So, Donna, tell me about yourself.
Donna – My first sixteen years as an only child, born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio, I drifted through the ordinary routines of life, though looking back on them, I was destined to write. From my days in grammar school, writing for the school newspaper, I knew I loved the written word and telling stories. That theme runs through most of my life.
In high school, a unique opportunity crossed my path that allowed me to attend the United World College of the Atlantic—an international school that has multiplied into at least sixteen satellite schools worldwide. While most of the students lived in dormitories on the “hill,” I lived in a two-room, ten-girl dorm inside St. Donat’s Castle outside Llantwit Major, Wales on the Bristol Channel. Though the castle has none of Hogwart’s magic, it does have a legendary ghost, Lady Anne, who roams the halls. I’m still in touch with some of my classmates and go to reunions.
Jen – That is exciting! What an experience that must have been! Why did you start writing?
Donna – My passion for writing fiction dawned at the UWC of the Atlantic, where I focused on English Literature and discovered my love of the classics. Their works awakened a desire to delve into the issues that touch the heart and write plots that show how God’s love abounds even in the profoundly difficult circumstances of our lives. I hoped to reflect the hunger in all of us for love, forgiveness, and belonging in a world that often withholds second chances.
One of my most extraordinary adventures occurred while researching Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and visiting the Brontë parsonage in Haworth, England. While walking the moors on a drizzly day, I happened upon an old man with a cap and a cane whose ancestors knew the Brontës. He delighted me with his stories and captivated my imagination with his words.
Jen – What a beautiful picture, and again, such a neat experience! Tell me about what genre you write.
Donna – Like many writers, it took time to tease out the genre that best fits me as an author. Even when I wrote and indie-published the first two books in the Waldensian Series—my contemporary Christian romantic suspense novels—the plots unfolded because centuries earlier, the Waldensians were part of a movement of Protestants persecuted by the Roman Church. Their story of faith and valor touched me, and I believed their story needed to be told.
It took James Rupart’s branding course to help me seize upon the component that seemed to drive every story I wrote—history. I could finally verbalize my tagline: Weaving History and Faith into Tales of Intrigue and Redemption.
Jen– I love that. Finding that tagline can help authors brand themselves and narrow in on what they really want to write.
What do you like to read?
Donna – Since I found my tagline, I’ve voraciously read numerous historical fiction authors—Tamera Alexander, Melanie Dobson, Francine Rivers, Kate Breslin, and Sarah Sundin. Their books weave the stories that engage me and help me hone my skills in the genre.
Tales from people throughout my travels over the years, like the man I met on the moors, have sparked the stories that come to life on the page. A slip-time work in progress (dual timelines) set during World War II in France and contemporary America began with our travel to Southern France in 2023. Later in the year, I returned to Libourne to interview historians and people alive during the war.

My Gilded Age historical romance, A Song of Deliverance, will be released by Scrivenings Press on December 3, 2024. It sprung to life during a family vacation in Ireland.
We were standing on a crest overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the Dingle Peninsula, and I imagined a woman of poverty in nineteenth-century Ireland destined to emigrate to America. Eventually, the concept morphed into the story as it exists today. When a poor Irish woman’s hopes for a better life in Colorado crumble after a mining disaster, she must find the faith and courage to create a new life for herself. In the process, Anna Sullivan helps the mine’s owner, Stefan Maier, uncover the nefarious deeds of his nemesis and falls in love with the mining mogul.
