When an unexpected guest is found dead under eerie circumstances, old family secrets resurface. Amidst creaky floorboards and flickering candlelight, can the amateur sleuth uncover the truth behind the ghostly apparitions?

8. Murder at the Farmers’ Market: A beloved local farmer is found dead amidst the fresh produce. As the market coordinator investigates, she uncovers a secret market rivalry and a world of farm scandals.

Exploring Cozy Mystery Themes: Diving into Comforting Crime

There are so many cozy mystery themes: amateur sleuths, quaint settings, animals as sidekicks, and they have a generous dose of humor.

Have you ever thought of cozies as comforting crime? Sounds like an oxymoron, but if you think about it, cozy mysteries do offer a comforting escape from the darker sides of crime fiction.

Let’s look at some popular cozy mystery themes that make them so irresistible (unputdownable?)

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Small Town Charm

One unique element of cozy mysteries is the small-town setting. These communities often become characters in their own right, brimming with quirky residents and local gossip – think Murder She Wrote. The close-knit nature of these towns means that the protagonist is often deeply connected to the people and places around them, adding layers of intrigue and personal stakes to the mystery.

All mysteries need personal stakes!

Culinary Delights

Food-themed cozies are fun! Whether it’s a bakery, a café, a food festival, or my favorite – a coffee shop – these stories combine delicious recipes with tantalizing mysteries.

The protagonist, often a chef or a food critic, finds themselves solving crimes while whipping up delectable dishes. It’s that ultimate blend of culinary art and crime-solving. Plus, they have the recipes in the book!

Book-Themed Cozies

For those who adore literature, book-themed cozies are a perfect choice. These mysteries often revolve around librarians, bookstore owners, or literary critics who find themselves entangled in a web of intrigue. The plot usually incorporates literary references and bookish clues, making it a delight for readers who love both books and mysteries.

One of my favorite bookish cozy series is Amanda Flower’s Magical Bookshop Mysteries!

Crafty Cozy Mystery Themes

Crafting and DIY themes are another popular trend. Protagonists in these cozies might be quilters, knitters, or crafters whose creative skills play a crucial role in solving crimes. The cozy, hands-on nature of crafting adds a personal touch to the mysteries, blending art with investigation.

These always make me want to take up knitting!

Historical Cozies

Historical cozies transport readers to different eras, combining period details with fun mysteries. Whether they’re set in Victorian England or 1920s America, these stories offer a nostalgic glimpse into the past while keeping readers engaged with charming sleuths and intriguing plots.

Hobby-Themed Cozies

Hobby-themes in cozies are super popular. My cozy series, An Empty-Nesters Cozy Mystery Series, is about a woman who starts a birding group. There are lots of other hobby cozies out there, including ones about camping and cruising!

Cozy Mystery Themes Today

In today’s world, cozies are still very popular, with new themes and settings constantly emerging. Now, readers find elements like diverse protagonists and modern issues, reflecting a broader range of experiences while maintaining the genre’s well-known warmth and charm.

Each of these themes provides a unique lens through which to view mysteries, making cozy mysteries a versatile and endlessly enjoyable genre. So, next time you pick up a cozy mystery, consider which theme might be the ultimate escape for you!

Meet author Amy Anguish

I’m so excited to have Amy Anguish on my blog! She has a novella coming out today – A Match Made in Christmas! Let’s learn more about her and then look at this fun Christmas novella collection.

Jen – Hi, Amy! I’d love to know more about your background.

Amy – I’m from all over the South. My Daddy is a preacher and we moved around quite a bit, and then my husband and I moved several more times after we got married. So, I’ve lived in Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Texas. If people ask where I’m from, I usually claim Arkansas and Tennessee, though Oklahoma also falls on the list because it’s where my grandparents lived for over 60 years and felt like home to me too.

Amy R Anguish

Amy R Anguish grew up a preacher’s kid, and in spite of having lived in seven different states that are all south of the Mason-Dixon line, she is not a football fan. Currently, she resides in Tennessee with her husband, daughter, and son, and usually a bossy cat or two. Amy has an English degree from Freed-Hardeman University that she intends to use to glorify God, and she wants her stories to show that while Christians face real struggles, it can still work out for good.

Follow her at http://www.amyranguish.com or http://www.facebook.com/amyanguishauthor  or https://twitter.com/amy_r_anguish

Learn more about her books at https://www.pinterest.com/msguish/my-books/

And check out the YouTube channel she does with two other authors, Once Upon a Page.

Jen – I know you’re a fellow Scrivenings Press author. What have you written?

Amy – I write Christian Romance where the characters long for ‘home,’ learn love isn’t just a feeling, and find out happily ever after doesn’t always come where expected. This will be my fifteenth publication, with two more scheduled for next year. All my books are on Amazon, as well as several other sites.

Jen – That’s exciting!! So, when do you write?

Amy – I tend to write in bursts. I’ve trained myself to write using Nanowrimo, which is always in November with a goal of writing at least 50k words in 30 days. I’ve won quite a few times, and while I don’t only write during November (and probably won’t write anything in November this year due to other events going on), it has trained me to love writing a whole story all at once. And I am a plantser—I mostly write by the seat of my pants, but also have a few scene ideas scribbled down so I don’t forget them.

Jen – I’ve attempted Nanowrimo, but never finished. It’s definitely challenging! What do you like to read in your downtime?

Amy – I love to read across quite a few genres—classics, contemporary romance, historical romance (especially Regency era and 1800s), and fantasy. I’ll dive into a mystery or nonfiction every now and then, but they’re not my go-tos. I think reading widely has made me a better author because I know what works well and what doesn’t. Plus, I have a great vocabulary from all those old books! 😉

Jen – I agree that reading helps with learning vocabulary. I’d like to know more about your platform: how can readers find you?

Amy – I’m on Facebook, Twitter, and have just joined Instagram after being prodded by several friends for years. I send out a newsletter once a month—twice only if something exciting is happening like a book release or freebie—and would love to have you subscribe. You can also find me on Bookbub and Goodreads.

Fun Facts:

Jen – I always like to ask for fun facts about authors!

Amy – I’m definitely a fan of hot tea and drink it all year long, at least one cup a day. I’m a big fan of fall, despite the allergies that come with it, though I have parts of every season I love. I have taken up gardening in the last six years and love to pick veggies or see butterflies working my flowers—not so much a fan of weeding. I also crochet and sew and paint every now and then.

One of the verses I’ve clung to most over the last year is Philippians 4:6-7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

A Match Made at Christmas:

A-parent-ly Christmas by Amy R Anguish—Noel and Joy Davidson didn’t mean to separate, but a job promotion and educational opportunities were too much for their marriage to withstand. Now, it’s Christmas and their son Andy wants them together. Between his mischief, an unexpected snowstorm, and the holiday spirit, they’re remembering why they first wanted to be together. But which one will give up their dream for the other?

Other novellas in the book are: A Match of her Own by Sarah Anne Crouch; Jingle Bell Matchmakers by Lori DeJong; The Santa Setup by Heather Greer.

Click on the graphic or title to order!

Jen – Thanks for being on the blog Amy! I can’t wait to read your novella!

Creative Exercises to Spark Inspiration and Improve Your Writing

Creative exercises can fuel your imagination and stimulate new ideas whether you’re facing writer’s block or simply looking to enhance your writing skills. I don’t know about you, but I struggle with inspiration for new ideas. As writers, sparking that creativity is essential.

Creative exercises to improve your writingWriting Prompts:

Writing prompts are brief scenarios, words, or images that serve as starting points for writing exercises. With them, you can explore new themes, genres, or narrative styles. Here’s how to use them effectively:

Random Prompt Selection: Choose a prompt at random. You can find many different kinds online. Write for a set amount of time (e.g., 10 minutes) without pausing to edit or second-guess yourself.

Theme Exploration: Focus on a specific theme – love, freedom, loss – and write a short story, poem, or scene that explores various aspects of that theme.

Blend: Blend two or more writing prompts.

Adapt: Adapt the prompt as necessary – maybe you can use it for what you’re working on!

Creative development exercises:

A good story needs strong, well-rounded characters. Use these exercises to deepen your understanding of your characters and their motivations:

Character Interviews: Imagine a conversation between yourself and your character. Ask them probing questions about their background, beliefs, fears, and desires. Record their responses in their voice. Add detailed backstories for your characters, exploring moments in their lives that shaped who they are in your novel. Thinkwritten has a blog post with a free printable worksheet for this!

Setting exploration:

Settings can bring your story to life and influence its mood and tone. Try these exercises to develop vivid and immersive settings:

Sense-Based Description: Choose a familiar setting like a park or a coffee shop and describe it using all five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste). Experiment with metaphors and sensory details to evoke a strong sense of place (keep that thesaurus handy!). I have a friend who takes pictures of random things and then sits down and writes about them using the five senses.

World-Building Exercise: Create a detailed map or sketch of a fictional world for your story. Consider its geography, climate, culture, and history. This exercise helps you visualize your setting and its impact on your characters and plot.

More creative exercises:Dialogue Practice:

Dialogue is essential for revealing character relationships and advancing the plot. Use these exercises to refine your dialogue-writing skills:

Role-Play Conversations: Enlist a friend or fellow writer to role-play a dialogue scenario with you. Practice writing natural-sounding dialogue that reveals character dynamics and advances the story.

Monologue Writing: Write a monologue from the perspective of one of your characters. Use this exercise to delve into their inner thoughts, emotions, and conflicts.

**Grammarly has a blog post all about dialogue that I’ve found to be very helpful.

Experimental writing techniques:

Experimenting with unconventional writing techniques can challenge your creativity and expand your storytelling abilities:

Stream-of-Consciousness Writing: Write continuously for a set period – 5-10 minutes – without pausing to edit or plan. Let your thoughts flow freely onto the page, capturing raw emotions and ideas.

Non-linear Narrative: Write a scene or story that doesn’t follow a chronological order. Play with flashbacks, flash-forwards, or multiple perspectives to create a layered and engaging narrative structure.

Revision and editing exercises:

Effective revision and editing are crucial. Use these exercises to strengthen your editing skills:

Sentence Restructuring: Take a paragraph from your draft and experiment with restructuring sentences to improve clarity, rhythm, and flow.

Word Substitution: Replace commonly used words with more precise or evocative alternatives. This exercise enhances your vocabulary and strengthens the impact of your writing.

Collaborative writing:

Collaborating with other writers can inspire fresh ideas and perspectives. Try these collaborative exercises:

Round-Robin Storytelling: Begin a story or scene and pass it on to another writer to continue. Alternate writers with each new paragraph or page, building on each other’s ideas.

Co-Writing Prompts: Choose a writing prompt and write separate stories or scenes based on the same prompt. Compare your interpretations and discuss how different approaches affect storytelling.

Brainstorming: Brainstorming with other authors can help spark new ideas!

What creative exercises do you use?

Incorporating these creative exercises into your writing routine can stimulate inspiration, strengthen your writing skills, and foster a deeper connection to your craft.

Experiment with different exercises regularly to explore new techniques, challenge yourself creatively, and overcome writer’s block.

Remember, creativity sparks inspiration through practice and exploration—try these exercises to unlock your imagination and elevate your writing to new heights.

Why you should enter writing contests

**Updated!

Writing contests – the bane of my existence! For a while!

I remember the first writing contest I entered – I didn’t tell anyone I had entered it. When I got the results in the mail (pre “everything by email”), I waited until I was alone to open the mailer. My scores weren’t great, although, looking back, they weren’t that bad.

Hindsight and all.

Fast forward to a few years ago – I started talking more about being a writer, and I shared my ideas with a few people. I entered contests again. That first one shot my confidence down big time because I thought the scores reflected my true ability. See more about that below.

I “won” every contest I entered. No, I didn’t win first prize – or even second or third. I won because I finally realized what contests are for, at least for me.

Winning writing contests

Entering writing contests is a HUGE step. HUGE. I mean it! It takes a lot for writers to put their “baby” out there for others to judge. Just like as parents, we want everyone to love our babies and think they’re amazing; as writers, we feel the same. And when someone doesn’t like what or how we’ve written, it’s painful.

Usually, contests offer prizes like money, a chance to have your work looked at in full, and, my personal favorite, critiques by others.

What I’ve learned from critiques

What I finally learned is to look for similar critique issues. I don’t have a problem with grammar, and my spelling and ability to follow contest guidelines are all pretty good.

What I do have an issue with is conflict. It’s something that is mentioned in every judge’s remarks.

So I had an “ah ha” moment, and I took my issue to Facebook. (Click the link on “conflict” above to read that post!) Writing conflict was difficult for me, because I don’t like it! I don’t enjoy drama or arguing and that’s what I equated with conflict. Not true.

I wasn’t looking for validation either. Although I enjoyed getting better scores! I was looking for ideas on how to incorporate conflict in my writing. If all the judges mentioned the same issue, then it was an issue for me!

writing contests

General rules about entering writing contestsRead the rules! Always. Then read them again and make sure to follow them to the letter.Your scores don’t define you. Read that again! Scoring in contests is very subjective. Learn, grow, and know that you can take what you want from the judge’s critiques and leave the rest.Make sure the cost is worth it to you. Weigh the cost vs. what you will get (prize, acclaim, critiques). Are the judges people in your field of writing? For example, if I enter a cozy mystery in a contest, is it mostly made up of judges in the romance area?Be realistic. What do you expect to earn or learn? If you don’t win the “grand prize,” what do you want to take away from entering the contest? In an article in Writer’s Digest , they stress proofreading before entering: You may have read your story a dozen times, but consider a new technique, like printing out the draft, reading it aloud, or having someone else read it. Never, ever complain about the contest on social media. If you have a valid concern, you should email the contest coordinator. The writing world is small, and you don’t want to alienate people.Reread #2. Don’t let a bad score ruin what you want to do.What experiences have you had with writing contests?

I’d love to hear about other people’s experiences! Have you entered a contest? Did you win? What did you learn about your writing?

If you’ve never entered a contest, I encourage you to try!

Why Cozy Mysteries Are Perfect for Fall Reading

I read all the time, and cozy mysteries are perfect for fall reading! As the leaves turn color, we are pulled toward all things warm and comforting – like reading!

Fall is the time for cozy sweaters, mugs of cocoa, and curling up with a good book.

But not just any book will do—this is when cozy mysteries truly shine. Cozy mysteries are lighthearted crime novels featuring an amateur sleuth, a charming small-town setting, and a cast of quirky characters. They are perfect for anyone who loves a good whodunit without the gore or gritty details.

And they’re one of my favorite genres to write!

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Here’s why cozy mysteries are the ideal choice for fall reading:Small-Town Settings & Tight-Knit Communities

Cozy mysteries are often set in picturesque places, from seaside cottages to bustling bookshops, where everyone knows everyone else’s business.

The settings are full of atmosphere, giving off warmth and familiarity.

Reading about a close-knit community—despite the occasional murder—can feel like a virtual hug. The town itself often becomes a character, filled with details that transport you to a place where you feel welcome. Even when there’s a mystery afoot.

Perfectly Puzzling Plots

Cozy mysteries challenge you – with their intricate plots & clever twists – but don’t stress you out! You can enjoy the suspense of a whodunit without worrying about graphic violence.

Each clue is like a fallen leaf waiting to be picked up, examined, and pieced together into a bigger picture. These stories keep you engaged, guessing, and flipping pages late into the night, but they never leave you feeling unsettled.

Relatable, Quirky Characters

Cozy mysteries make the perfect fall reading because they feature lovable protagonists. These characters aren’t hardened detectives but rather ordinary people. Maybe they’re librarians, bakers, or bookshop owners, and they stumble upon a crime and can’t resist solving it.

In my cozy series – The Empty Nesters Cozy Mystery – my main character is a widowed empty-nester who starts a birding group. She wants to make new friends, but then, people die!

Cozy mystery characters often have charming quirks and funny habits that make you root for them from the first page. They might be a cat-loving bookstore owner or a retired teacher. These sleuths feel like people you’d love to have a cup of cocoa with.

Seasonal Themes and Atmospheric Settings

Many cozy mysteries are set during fall or around holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. These stories put you right into the scene with crunching leaves, foggy mornings, and the smell of cinnamon and spice.

A Wholesome Escape from Reality

In a world filled with real-life stressors, cozy mysteries offer a much-needed escape. They allow you to indulge in a bit of intrigue and excitement. They’re light-hearted and have happy endings. And, they emphasize community and justice and provide a reassuring balance. You know that in a cozy mystery, the sleuth will solve the case, justice will be served, and the world will be set right again. Perfect for the darker, longer nights.

Easy to Read and Enjoyable to Share

Cozy mysteries are known for their quick pacing, making them perfect for those moments when you want to relax. They’re great for binge-reading or enjoying one chapter at a time. And, because they often come in series, there’s always another mystery to solve with your favorite characters.

Plus, they’re great for sharing! Cozy mysteries are perfect for book clubs. You can debate suspects, compare notes, or simply share a laugh about the quirks of a beloved amateur sleuth.

Conclusion for fall reading

Cozy mysteries and fall reading go hand in hand, like a blanket and a warm cup of cocoa. With their charming settings, lovable characters, and engrossing plots, they offer that balance of comfort and intrigue. So, as the leaves fall and the nights draw in, consider reaching for a cozy mystery. You might just find it’s your new favorite autumn tradition.

Happy reading!

Plot Points and Pinch Points: Understanding Their Role in Fiction Writing

When we write our novel, we must understand the roles of plot points and pinch points. These structural elements work together to drive the narrative forward, create tension, and keep readers engaged. Let’s look at what they are, their differences, and how they collaborate to shape our stories.

What are Plot Points? According to Joe Bunting on The Write Practice, “… plot points are the big moments, the key events that change everything.” They often mark significant changes for the protagonist and drive the overall narrative arc forward.

Key plot points in a novel:Inciting Incident: This is the event that sets the main plot in motion and introduces the central conflict. It prompts the protagonist to take action or make a decision that initiates the story.Plot Point 1: This typically occurs near the end of the first act/beginning of the second—at about the 25% mark. It forces the protagonist to confront the main conflict head-on, leading to rising tension and stakes.Midpoint (plot point 2–50% mark): The midpoint shifts the story from reaction to action. It often involves a revelation, decision, or event that changes the protagonist’s goals or approach to achieving them.Plot Point 3 (End of Act 2–75% mark): This occurs near the end of the second act. It escalates the conflict and raises the stakes for the protagonist, setting the stage for the climax.Climax: The climax is the highest point of tension in the story, where the protagonist faces the central conflict in a decisive confrontation or moment of truth.Resolution: The resolution resolves the main conflict and provides closure for the story. It may include the protagonist’s growth or change as a result of their journey. What are Pinch Points?

I learned about pinch points from Patricia Bradley. Pinch points are specific moments in your story that remind readers of the antagonist’s presence and the looming threat or obstacles the protagonist faces. They reinforce the stakes and increase tension by showing the antagonist’s actions or the consequences of the conflict. As Pat puts it, it’s a time to “pinch” the protagonist.

Here’s how they function:

Pinch Point 1: This occurs around the 37% mark of the story and reminds us of the antagonist’s goals, strengths, or influence. It raises doubts about the protagonist’s ability to succeed.

Pinch Point 2: Near the 62% mark, this pinch point intensifies the conflict and puts additional pressure on the protagonist. It highlights the antagonist’s power or reveals a new threat or complication.

How Do They Work Together?

Plot points and pinch points work together to create a cohesive and engaging narrative structure by:

-Driving the Narrative: Plot points drive the main storyline forward by introducing new challenges, decisions, and resolutions that shape the protagonist’s journey.

-Building Tension: Pinch points maintain tension throughout the story by reminding readers of the antagonist’s presence and the obstacles the protagonist must overcome. They keep the stakes high and reinforce the urgency of the conflict.

-Balancing Action and Reflection: Plot points often involve significant action or decisions by the protagonist, while pinch points provide moments of reflection or realization about the challenges ahead.

Together, plot points and pinch points create a dynamic narrative arc with rising tension, escalating conflicts, and pivotal moments that lead to the climax and resolution.

Summing up plot points and pinch points

Understanding the roles of plot points and pinch points is essential for structuring a compelling fiction novel. Plot points drive the overarching storyline and character development, while pinch points maintain tension and emphasize the antagonist’s role in the conflict. By strategically incorporating these elements, we can craft a well-paced and engaging narrative that captivates readers from start to finish.

Experiment with their placement and impact in your story to enhance its structure and emotional depth, ensuring a satisfying and memorable reading experience.
