Meet author Jann Franklin

I met Jann Franklin at a Scrivenings Press writers’ retreat. She’s an indie writer, and I loved to ask her questions (I plan to self-publish a women’s fiction in 2026). I had a great time getting to know her, so I invited her on the blog for an author interview!

Jen – Hi Jann! Tell me a bit about yourself!

Jann – Born in Clovis, New Mexico, I moved to Arkansas when I was four, and graduated from Russellville High School. As an adult, I joined a church where the Bible was preached from the pulpit every Sunday, and the people acted on it in their lives. That was life-changing for me, as I had always attended a church that was more about behavior than heart.

What Jann Franklin writes

Jen – I know you write cozies, tell us about them!

Jann – I write cozy mysteries with just a little bit of romance and a whole lot of humor. Currently, I have two cozy series published:

**Small Town Girl Mysteries: Evangeline Delafose is finding Graisseville, Louisiana, just as she remembered—boring and uneventful. Until her brother Nate asks her to help solve a murder.

Follow Ev as she navigates clues, dead bodies, and quirky small-town residents to solve a mystery. And of course, show her little brother that she’s still got it.

If you like cozy mysteries with twists and turns, deep South settings, and a hint of romance, you’ll love this series! Let’s not forget quirky yet charming characters who remind you of family—sometimes you want to hug them, and sometimes you want to disown them. Enjoy small-town Graisseville with Ev as she solves crime with help from her family and friends. This is a clean, faith-based read with no profanity, sex, or graphic violence.

Muffalettas and Murder is the first of the Small-Town Girl Mystery Series.

Jen’s opinion on Muffalettas and Murder

Jen – I’ll throw in my two cents here, too. I really enjoyed Muffalettas and Murder! The setting was amazing, and following Ev as she solves the mystery is a lot of fun!

Another series by Jann Franklin

**Three Dog Mysteries (one book with the second coming in September). Ro can’t boil an egg or keep a plant alive, but she can solve a mystery.

I’ve also published a trilogy, Small Town Girl. Jen escaped the small-town life only to find herself once again living without a coffee shop and food delivery. Life throws you curveballs, but you’ve got to keep swinging.

Currently, I’m editing book two of the Three Dog Mysteries, “Innkeepers and Imposters,” due out this fall. And I’m starting a crossover book with both my amateur sleuths solving a mystery together, titled “Alligators and Arson.” It should be out next spring.

All my books are on Amazon, and your favorite online book seller.

Jann’s writing habits

Jen – as a fellow author, I often ask other authors about their writing habits.

Jann – I’m a Plantser 😊 I start with a fairly detailed outlined (Plotter), but I follow my characters and the story—and sometimes they take me another direction (Pantser.) My best time to write is in the morning, after my second cup of coffee has kicked in and I’ve finished my Bible study. Both of these habits make my writing much smoother.

Research for Jann Franklin’s books

Jen – I love that. I”m a panster with a tiny bit of plotter in there! Tell us about the research you do for your cozies.

Jann – I do a little research, mostly on the food and culture of South Louisiana. Since I’m not from Louisiana and I live in the northwest corner near Shreveport, I have to learn about these facts from the internet. Recently, my husband and I vacationed in the south, where my books are based, and that was a lot of fun to see and hear and taste what I’ve been writing about.

Jen – What are your goals for your writing?

Jann – I enjoy writing—out of all the hobbies I’ve tried in my lifetime, this by far is the most fun! My books are meant for entertainment and connection—no big life lessons for sure. But we all need a little wholesome distraction in our lives.

What Jann reads

Jen – My next favorite thing to ask authors is what they enjoy reading.

Jann – I’m constantly reading nonfiction books about writing—I just finished James Scott Bell’s “How to Write Short Stories and Use Them to Further Your Writing Career.” As for fiction, I drift toward my fellow indie authors’ writing. I just finished Marguerite Martin Gray’s “Flames of Faith,” and it was marvelous. Next on my list is Jonni Rich’s “Deadly Sweet Sixteen,” a cozy mystery.

Jann Franklin’s bio:

Jann Franklin is a faith-based cozy mystery writer living in Grand Cane, Louisiana with slightly less than three hundred other people.

She attracts readers who enjoy twisty Southern mysteries with a touch of romance and a dose of humor. Her books offer characters who exasperate as much as they endear. These quirky yet charming residents are just like family—sometimes you want to hug them, and sometimes you want to disown them. Immerse yourself in small-town culture as you exercise your sleuthing skills and your funny bone.

Jann and her husband John enjoy Sundays at Grand Cane Baptist Church, supper with family and friends, and the sense of community that comes from living the small-town life. Their kids come to visit when they aren’t too busy living their big-city lives.

Fun facts about Jann

Jen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know! (Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verse? What do you do in your free time? Cat or dog person?)

Jann:

**Coffee all the way, with a teaspoon of local honey.  ☕

**My favorite season is summer-everyone is more casual then, and we can all agree on one thing: it’s HOT! 🥵

**Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” No situation, emotion, or experience is hopeless with Jesus by my side. ⛪

**Free time? What free time? I spend my free time finding something to fill it up 😊 Volunteering, hanging with my chickens, spending time with friends and family, traveling… 🐔

**Dog person all the way—sorry cat people, but let’s agree to disagree. 🐶

How to find Jann online

Jen – How can we find you online?

Jann – I write a weekly column for a couple of small-town newspapers entitled “From Bright Lights to Lightning Bugs,” my life as a big-city girl loving the small-town life. They are on my website in blog format.

Sleuthing in the Sun: 8 Ways to Find Mystery Writing Ideas This Summer

☀Summer might not scream “murder,” but mystery writing ideas are everywhere! While others are lounging by the pool or planning beach vacations, we’re dreaming up alibis, suspicious strangers, red herrings, and secrets buried in the sand. But what if the heat is frying our inspiration?

🔍 Don’t worry. Here are 8 clever, summer-themed ways to generate fresh mystery writing ideas, no matter your writing style—from cozy to cold-blooded.

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

1) Visit a tourist trap – imagine a crime scene

At a tourist trap: think boardwalk, kitschy museum, lighthouse – ask yourself:

• Who might vanish from here?

• What could be hidden in plain sight?

• What happens when a tourist sees something they shouldn’t?

🍦Idea Starter: A beach town’s beloved ice cream truck man is found dead… after warning a guest that they’d be next.

2) Mystery writing ideas: Eavesdrop!

🌞Summer brings people outdoors, and we get to listen to them! Sit somewhere shady, sip something cold, and listen. That strange breakup, a whispered apology, the suspicious “I told you not to say anything”—all gold for mystery writers.

Idea Starter: Two teens are overheard planning a prank… but the next day, someone ends up missing.

3) Check small-town crime news

📰Mystery writing ideas come from everywhere, and smaller communities often have surprisingly juicy incidents in their local papers. Search for summer headlines involving:

• Unexplained disappearances

• Unusual accidents

• Heated neighborhood disputes

Idea Starter: A family renting a lake house goes missing, but the house was booked under a fake name.

4) Baby, it’s hot outside

♨A heatwave can make people impulsive, angry, and careless. What does a crime look like in the middle of a heatwave? What happens when evidence melts, rots, or warps?

Idea Starter: A body is found in a sealed car during a record-breaking heatwave. Was it an accident—or staged?

5) Mystery writing ideas: summer celebration gone wrong 🎇

Summertime – carnivals, parades, outdoor concerts – all settings full of ideas for mischief, misdirection, or mayhem.

Idea Starter: During a fireworks show, someone disappears in the crowd—except no one seems to remember them ever being there.

6) Summer secrets journal 📒

Each day, jot down one secret someone might hide during summer. For example:

• A lifeguard covering up something from last year.

• A summer flirt gone too far.

• A missing person who was never reported.

Over time, you’ll build a trove of ideas.

7) What’s lost must be found

Online forums, Craigslist, or beach resort message boards often feature curious posts, including lost phones, jewelry, wallets, and pets. Some sound innocent—others, not so much. 🤷‍♀️

Idea Starter: A woman finds a wedding ring buried in the sand, with a message etched inside… and no matching missing item report.

8) Summer twist on the queen of mysteries – Agatha Christie 🔎

Challenge yourself to take a classic Christie setup (a locked room, a last-minute will, a dinner party) and relocate it to a summer setting: a yacht, a vineyard, a hiking trail. (Think And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile.)

Idea Starter: A private island getaway turns deadly when a storm traps the guests and the host vanishes, but their phones continue to receive messages.

Mystery writing ideas never take a vacation

🌴Summer might feel lazy, but for a mystery writer, it’s a season full of what-ifs and why-nots. The bright sun just makes the shadows darker. So grab your notebook, soak up some summer vibes, and keep your eyes open. Your next mystery writing ideas might be waiting just around the next sun umbrella.

Behind the Scenes of Trinity Sands Beach Club

When Deborah Sprinkle, Sharon Carpenter, and I started working on our individual novellas for Trinity Sands Beach Club, I knew the behind-the-scenes part would make a fun blog post!

We often met for lunch at Cracker Barrel or Panera, and we also met via Zoom. Once we narrowed down specifics – characters that would play a part in each of our stories, and especially when we started writing, Zoom worked out best.

Let’s see what each of us answered on the behind-the-scenes questions!

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Behind the scenes: premise

How did you come up with the premise of your novella?

Deb – We decided to make our protagonists older females. So I thought about what has happened to my friends. Many of them are widows. I think that’s what put the idea in my head.

Sharon – When I decided that my heroine would be a never-married older lady, I had to think of why she never married. And what would bring her to a new place to start over. If she were starting over, would that be an opening for love to bloom? Also, what would put her in peril? It was fun to play with all of those dimensions, but then the actual writing started.

Jen – I knew my main character was over fifty, so I decided to have her be recently divorced. She’s a fun person, but battling self-esteem issues. Then I had her ex move in next to her, and the story blossomed from there.

Challenges

What was the hardest part of this project?

Deb – I think the hardest part was making sure the three of us treated the common parts of the island the same. We all talked about Ursula, the housekeeper, Maude, the grocery store owner, and a couple of other things about the island.

Sharon – Because this is my debut fiction piece, all of it was hard. Probably the hardest was coming up with the premise and deciding on the type of peril. It was difficult because there aren’t any real boundaries, and the options are wide open. It was sort of like being at a huge buffet and on a one-thousand-calorie diet.

Jen – I’d never written “short.” Not that my cozies are super long, but a novella is half of that, so you’re cutting extraneous stuff. That is challenging, but I ended up really enjoying it.

Behind the scenes: themes

What theme(s) do you see in your novella? Did you plan it or did it “just happen?”

Deb – Besides the obvious theme of helping a friend in need, I think my novella deals with finding your way through grief. Part of which is dealing with family and their desire to protect you, and guilt when you start to envision a new life—one that could be fulfilling and happy. The themes surrounding grief just happened as I began to tell the story. I knew my protagonist would be a widow, but as I fleshed her out, these other parts of her life became real to me.

Sharon – For me, it just happened. I was too preoccupied with the story to really write to a theme.

Jen – I see a theme of forgiveness between Karah and Gage, as well as between Karah and her daughter, Nikki. There’s also the theme of family. I didn’t plan it!

Pivotal moments

Were there pivotal moments or challenges in writing this novella that you think will help in future writing?

Deb – Yes, I enjoyed writing about someone more my age, and I realized I wanted to write more books with older protagonists. Men and women who have to deal with the issues of getting older, but still live vital lives. I hope my readers enjoy this novella and will support me in future endeavors.

Sharon – Just knowing I can do it is going to be instrumental in the next project. I no longer have the “can I do it” self-talk. I have reframed it to “let’s do it again!”

Jen – I loved the opportunity to write with friends. That’s something that usually doesn’t happen, as writing is a very solitary job.

Behind the scenes – let’s pick favorites!

Who is your favorite character in the novella? Why?

Deb – Choosing a favorite character is tough because I liked all my characters. But I have to say I enjoy writing quirky characters the most. Like Grace’s publisher, Olga, and Maude, the owner of the grocery store.

Sharon – That’s like asking me to choose between children! If I have to say, Ben would probably be my favorite because I see a lot of my husband’s qualities in Ben. Mostly when he is trying to be patient with Claire.

Jen – I have two favorites: Rusty the cat and Maude. I love Maude because she’s this crusty older lady who knows everyone on the island and everything going on.

What was your favorite moment(s) in our Zoom meetings and lunch meetings?

Deb – Another tough question. I enjoy our lunch meetings the most because we’re face-to-face. We get done what we need to, but I especially enjoy the stories that get traded back and forth about our lives. Amid lots of laughter. I love getting closer to these amazing ladies. And I feel blessed to call them friends.

Sharon – I love meeting with Jen and Debbie. I feel like the Lord took three writers who live in the same area and bonded us to make us not just friends, but good friends. I had many life events happen during the writing of this book, and they were such encouragers and prayer warriors. Every time we meet, I am more and more thankful for their presence in my life.

Jen – I agree with Sharon. The friendship that’s developed is priceless. I also love how we pray for each other. We laugh a lot too. When we eat out and talk about our stories, like how to kill a character, I wonder what other people in the restaurant think!

That’s it for behind-the-scenes on Trinity Sands Beach Club. Now it’s on to the next Second Chances: Romance & Mysteries novella collection – Bedlam in Bridal Falls – to be released in October 2026!

Meet author Sharon Carpenter

I’m so excited to have Sharon Carpenter on my blog today! She and I became friends at a local writing conference and then drove together to the Asheville Christian Writing Conference. Boy, did we talk! So fun! Read on to learn more about her.

By the way, Sharon is another author in the Trinity Sands Beach Club novella collection!

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Jen – Sharon Carpenter! It’s so good to have you on my blog. Tell us about yourself.

Sharon – I grew up as an Air Force brat. We lived all over, and I went to nine schools in twelve years – including 3 different high schools. I thrived in the military environment and believe that it built resilience and the ability to pivot into my personality.

My dad retired to central Alabama when I was 15. One of his goals was to get me away from young airmen, but when I went to college I quickly found the Army ROTC department and my future husband, Jesse.

I like to say that my daddy took me to Alaska, the Philippines, and California, and then my husband took me to Europe. My mother instilled the philosophy that “home” is wherever we happen to be living, and every day is an adventure. I have fond memories of every place I have ever called home, but my favorites were probably Alaska, the Philippines, and Germany.

More about Sharon Carpenter

Sharon – I can see God’s hand all over the paths that life has taken me. Jesse and I intended for his Army career to last 20-30 years, and we wanted to retire in Alabama. We had it all planned out, but God had a different path. We were shocked when he was caught in a drawdown that meant he didn’t make the next rank, and the best path forward was to retire at fifteen years. It was heart-wrenching and a shock to our systems.

My husband took it much better than I did, but I kicked against the traces and railed to heaven about it. Retirement meant the end to a life that I was familiar with and loved. After 8 weeks in a hotel room with three young children, a golden retriever, a hamster, two goldfish, and a very patient husband, I finally fell on my face and cried “uncle” to God. I told Him I would go wherever He led and be thankful for His leading. Twenty-four hours later, He led us to Memphis, and I came close to throwing another fit. But thirty years later I can see the blessings of raising our family here, and the sweet way that He grew our family with “in-love” kids and grandkids. Our family of five has grown to a family of fourteen with two more on the way this year.

Sharon’s writing habits

Jen – I have a big family, too, and I love it! Where would we be without all of these kiddos?! So, my next question is about your writing habits.

Sharon – I wish my writing habits were better. I am resilient and I pivot well, but I cannot multitask. If my kids are here, I am single-minded and present with them. During recent renovations, I struggled to write on days that I had to do other things. I struggle to write when my house is dirty. However, I have found that when I calendar writing days, it works for me. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays tend to be writing days, and I do my best not to schedule anything that isn’t writing-related on those days. Unless my kids are here.

I love to write in the mornings.  Writing has always been the best way for me to process the world around me and the things going on in my life. I journal, write my prayers, and try to blog, but I have enjoyed writing for Chicken Soup for the Soul publications. Fiction has been fun because it allows me to play with imaginary friends.

The perfect time to write

My perfect writing day is to get up before the sunrise and have my quiet time and my tea, walk for thirty minutes, then get to my computer and write until I take an exercise break. Repeat writing and exercise breaks until I need to be present for Jesse, or I run out of ideas. I’m still figuring out if I am a plotter or pantser, because I’m just winging it. Trinity Sands Treasure Hunt is my first fiction project. I tried all the methods and had the most success when I wrote a chapter knowing where I started and where I was going, but meandered on the path. So, no outline or road map, but a definite destination.

Research for writing

Jen – Meandering is what works for me, too! I try to plot, but it happens more along the way. You, Deb Sprinkle, and I have written the Trinity Sands Beach Club novella collection. Did you have to do research for your novella?

Sharon – I found myself going down a research rabbit hole researching alligators. Most of that needed to be cut, but it was fun.

Sharon’s goals

Jen – Alligators are amazing! What goals do you have for your writing?

Sharon – I write because it is a way to process the world around me in a way that God is glorified. I hope that my fiction depicts relatable characters who find strength and purpose through recognizing their need for a Savior and making life choices that honor Him. I want my readers to find hope within my words and motivation to better know the One who loves them to the uttermost.

What Sharon likes to read

Jen – I know you well enough that I know this is a loaded question! What do you enjoy reading?

Sharon – I have loved to read ever since I can remember. One of my first memories is holding a book and wanting to know what the symbols on the page meant. As a child, I haunted the libraries wherever we lived, and always checked out a fairytale book, a biography, and a horse book. I still have my well-loved copy of Troy Nesbit’s Sand Dune Pony on the bookshelf in my office. Marguerite Henry captured my imagination when I was six, and I still thrill at the thought of the Chincoteague ponies. As a teenager, I read Grace Livingston Hill and Agatha Christie, then everything Mary Higgins Clark wrote. I still love good mysteries and romance. I read almost every genre except fantasy, horror, or erotica. My son-in-love still finds it distressing that I’ve never read The Chronicles of Narnia or The Hobbit.

I enjoy nonfiction as well. This year, our family read and discussed Bad Therapy and Irreversible Damages by Abigail Shrier, and The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. I believe those three books are important works for society at large, but especially Christians, even though they aren’t written by Christian authors or to a Christian audience.

Jen – I’ll look up those three nonfiction books. They sound good. And just so you know, I’m not into Narnia or The Hobbit. Don’t rat me out to your son-in-love!

Where to find Sharon Carpenter

Jen – Where can readers find you?

Sharon – I have a website at www.sharonhcarpenter.com. I have a blog and post irregularly. One of my goals is to become more reliable in my posting both on my blog and on Facebook. You can connect with me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sharon.h.carpenter.5/

Fun facts

Jen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know!

Sharon – I enjoy a cup of tea in the mornings – Earl Grey is my go-to. I don’t like the taste of coffee, but find that it is best for late nights and appetite control.

I love late spring and early fall. When there is a chill in the air, but the days are warm.

I read, sew, swim, and piddle around our property.

I love dogs and the idea of cats. We lost our elderly dog this year, and I still look for her.  We have an outdoor “mouser.” He wants to be a house cat, but I can’t stand the hair and am allergic to cat dander. I’d love to have horse,s but my husband says NO.

The scripture that is speaking to me at this stage of my life is Psalm 92:14-15: “Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, “The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him.” I am standing on this promise.

Jen – I love that Scripture! He is just! What is your advice for new authors?

Sharon – My advice is to write. Find a time to put your bottom in the chair and write. Then find other writers. Learn your craft. Go to conferences. Invest time and some money in your calling.

More about Sharon Carpenter

Jen – If you could have dinner with any author, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Sharon – The Apostle John. My personality can be more rigid like Paul, but I strive to be loving like John. I want to sit with John and listen to the adventures he had with Jesus that he didn’t write about.

Future plans

Jen – What are you working on next?

Sharon – I’m working on a journal/devo for new mothers-in-law, and another novella for a second book with Jen Dodrill and Deborah Sprinkle. 😊

Sharon Carpenter’s bio

Sharon Carpenter was born with a love for words.  Family lore tells that she spoke early and often, jabbering to anyone who would listen or no one at all.  One of her most-used phrases was “another story, just one more?”  Not much has changed.

Growing up as an Air Force brat and an only child, books were her constant companions and closest friends. After all, they moved to a new Air Force Base in another state or country whenever she did. The Little Engine That Could, Go, Dog, Go, Winnie the Pooh series, Misty of Chincoteague, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries, classical stories of romance and valor as well as popular fiction can all still be found on Sharon’s overflowing bookshelves.  Reference books, nonfiction books on history and relationships, Biblical studies, and a vast collection of family Bibles also abound.  There are never enough bookshelves.

More about Sharon

Writing became an extension of reading very early.  Sharon often thought up alternate endings or plot twists and vowed to someday write a novel.  Nonfiction writing was an integral part of her teaching career, but the dream to craft fiction persisted. Membership in Bartlett Christian Writers, American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW), wonderful writing conferences, along with the friendships and encouragement from like-minded people, have challenged Sharon to put feet to dreams and “just do it.”

Sharon and her husband, Jesse, have been on a wonderful adventure for almost 40 years.  They are parents to 3 amazing kids who married 3 amazing kids, and Sassy and Papa to an ever-increasing tribe of grands.  Her hobbies include travel, books, gardening, cooking, exercising, sewing, and passionately pursuing Jesus.  A perfect day in the Carpenter home is one filled with family love, laughter, fellowship with friends, and the anticipation of an adventure.

Sharon has been published in curriculum, regional publications, and Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies.  She is currently working on a Christian novel.

Meet author Deborah Sprinkle

Deborah Sprinkle is on my blog today! I’ve known her for a couple of years – we live fairly close to each other and have met for lunch, and we are both Scrivenings Press authors.

Last year, Deb, another writer friend, Sharon Carpenter, and I began working on the Trinity Sands Beach Club novella collection, which is set to release on June 17, 2025. All three stories are romantic suspense. Let’s find out some more about Deborah Sprinkle!

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Jen – Hi Deb! I’m so glad to have you on my blog. Tell us a little about yourself.

Deb –I grew up in a suburb of St. Louis, MO, and lived in the St. Louis area until after I was married. Our first child was five years old, and I was pregnant with our second when we decided to take the job in northern Indiana. Our poor parents were devastated that we were taking their only grandchildren away from them! But we made sure both kids understood the importance of family.

At one point, I was so homesick for St. Louis, and a job came up there. Les applied for it even though it wasn’t a good fit for him, but I was certain God was taking us home. He didn’t get it, and it was my turn to be devastated. Until one day, Les found out that if he had gotten the job, we would have moved back to St. Louis, only to be relocated to Chicago a year later with that division! I saw then that instead of denying me, God was protecting me from greater heartache.

Deborah Sprinkle – writing habits

Jen – I’m always curious about other authors’ writing habits. Do you have a certain time of day to write? Do you follow an outline? Where do you get your ideas? What do you like most about writing? Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Deb – I’m a pantser who has some idea of where my story is going before I begin to write. No outlines and no certain time of day, I write when I feel the urge. Often, I’m more of a binge writer, starting in the morning and working well into the afternoon. I’m not sure where most of my ideas come from, to be honest. They just pop up in my brain. But I love to write. I love weaving stories that where several threads intertwine and the reader finds surprises in unexpected places.

Deborah Sprinkle’s bio:

Deborah Sprinkle is a retired chemistry teacher turned award-winning author with a modest number of books to her name and more on the way. All romantic suspense and mysteries.

She lives in Memphis with her wonderful husband of more than 50 years.

Connect with Deborah on her website or on Facebook.

Research for stories

Jen – Do you have to do research for your stories? What did you find most interesting?

Deb – Yes. For Trinity Sands Beach Club, I needed to find out about beach communities—what the houses are like, vegetation, animals, etc. We have a place called The Wilds on our make-believe island that is supposed to resemble a nature preserve. I enjoyed researching what it would be like the most.

Jen – Why do you write? Whom do you wish to reach?

Deb – I feel called to write. I hope to write books that offer clean entertainment with imperfect characters that live out their need for God, their trust in Him, and their thankfulness as examples to others.

Jen – I love that! What are some of your favorite books that you like to read?

Deb – I love reading, and I gravitate to mysteries and suspense. My first favorite author was Agatha Christie (she still is). But, since I’ve joined a book club, I read all sorts of genres. Fiction and nonfiction. Some of my favorite authors are Fredrik Backman, Erik Larson, and Jodi Picoult.

Fun facts with Deborah Sprinkle

Jen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know! (Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verse? What do you do in your free time? Cat or dog person?)

Deb – I do not drink coffee—although I enjoy the aroma. I prefer iced tea.

My favorite season is fall, and my life verse is “The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusts in Him.” Ps. 28:7

In my free time, I enjoy playing solitaire, Sudoku, or doing jigsaw puzzles on my computer.

I love both cats and dogs, but I’m allergic to their dander. ☹

Advice for new authors

Jen – What would you say to a new author?

Deb – My advice is to go to conferences so you can learn your craft and make connections, read all you can about how to write well, and join a critique group or a local writers’ group.

Jen – I agree! Making those connections is what brought us together! What are you working on next?

Deb – I’m working on another Mac and Sam mystery, The Case of the Other Brother, to be released in 2026, and another novella for a second book with Jen Dodrill and Sharon H. Carpenter. 😊

Jen – I’m so glad Deborah Sprinkle was on my blog today! If you want to learn more about her books, visit her on Amazon, Scrivenings Press, or her website, Author Deborah Sprinkle.

Thoughtful Father’s Day Gifts for the Writer in Your Life

Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the men who’ve shaped our stories—literally and figuratively. If your husband, dad, or the father figure in your life is a writer, you know that inspiration and creativity are vital parts of his world.

Whether he’s an aspiring novelist, a journal devotee, or a published poet, here are great gift ideas to show your appreciation for his passion and encourage his craft.

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

📓A High-Quality Notebook or Journal for Father’s Day

We writers live by our notebooks. I love these for dads!

🖋 A Luxurious Fountain Pen

A handsome journal needs a good pen! Fountain pens use water-based, often refillable ink, while ballpoint pens use oil-based ink from disposable cartridges. A good pen can turn writing into a ritual. Brands like Lamy, Pilot, and TWSBI offer elegant, smooth-writing options at various price points (be sure to get extra ink for it)!

📚 Books About Writing

These books on writing are my standard go-to for myself and to recommend to other writers:

Stephen King’s On Writing Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird The War of Art by Steven Pressfield The Emotion Thesaurus (and any others in the Writers Helping Writers series) 🎧 Noise-Canceling Headphones

For the dad who writes in noisy households or coffee shops, a pair of noise-canceling headphones can be a game-changer. Brands like Sony, Bose, and Beats are great options. Earbuds can work well too!

☕Coffee Mug (or two!)

Readers of this blog know I’m a huge coffee mug lover! I have many, many of them, and I will be adding more! Here are a few of my favorite writers’ mugs:

This mug is new to me! It’s … odd, but interesting, and I can see some men would like it!

The saying on this travel mug is one of my favorites!

🎁 Custom Typewriter Key Bracelet

If your dad loves vintage vibes, consider a handcrafted bracelet made from old typewriter keys. Sites like Etsy have many unique, writer-themed accessories that combine nostalgia with personal style.

✍ A “Writer at Work” Desk Sign

Sometimes the smallest gifts are the most charming. Check out these writer signs I found:

Author definition acrylic sign Wooden box sign – The Writer You are a writer desk sign Someone out there needs your writing wooden sign 📘His Favorite Book

I don’t know your dad’s favorite book, but I have a couple of blog lists that might help.

Cozy mysteries Fantasy book recs Science Fiction recommendations Nonfiction

💡 Final Thoughts on Father’s Day Gifts

This Father’s Day, go beyond the usual and give a gift that celebrates your dad’s inner world—the world of characters, ideas, and untold stories. Whether it’s practical, inspirational, or just a bit whimsical, the perfect present for a writer dad shows that you see and support the passion that drives him.
