Author Kim Banet & Just Another Dream

Kim Banet was on the blog about a year ago talking about her debut novel, Just Another Home. Today we’re talking all things writing and featuring her new book, Just Another Dream!

Jen – One of my favorite questions to ask authors is, how do you come up with your ideas?

Kim – They often come to me when I’m doing things that have nothing to do with writing. I make notes in my phone and sort through them later when I’m at my computer. Otherwise, character traits and development come to me as I’m writing. I’m very much a “pantser”. I usually start a book knowing the overall theme and the ending, but I normally have no idea how I’m going to get to that ending until I start writing.

Just Another Dream

Kim’s writing process

Jen – Well, you just answered my next question! Do you outline or write a rough draft before you start writing?

Kim – I don’t outline before writing, but as ideas come to me during writing, I make a list of plot points that I want to write.

Jen – What’s the hardest part about writing a book?

Kim – Getting started! Sometimes I have to make myself sit and write, even if it’s bad, just to get into the routine.

Jen – Totally agree! Even if it’s bad!

Themes & pivotal moments

Jen – What themes do you like to use in your books?

Kim – My first series focuses on the themes of family and God’s love and guidance.

Jen – I love that! Were there pivotal moments or challenges in your writing career that helped define your path?

Kim – I was a finalist in the Scrivenings Press Get Pubbed Contest. Although I did not win, the owner of Scrivenings Press told me that if I changed one of the main POVs to a different character in the story, she would review it for publication. I made the change and was offered a publishing contract, and that led to the Family Forever Series.

Kim Banet’s bio:

Kimberly Banet received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, where she majored in Business and Psychology. She and her late husband of more than thirty-six years, Jeff, raised two wonderful children: Nicole, who lives in Seattle, Washington, and Brandon, who lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Today, Kim shares her long-time home in Starlight, Indiana, with her dachshund, Daisy Mae, and yorkie-poo, Winnie.

When not working, Kimberly’s hobbies include reading, Bible journaling, crocheting blankets, making seasonal crafts and mugs, and spending time with good friends and family.

Writing advice

Jen – What’s the best writing advice you’ve received?

Kim – Keep writing! Before I was published, I entered a lot of contests. In one particular contest early on, I received very low scores and some harsh criticism. But at the end of the critique, the judge said, “Keep writing, because you have an interesting story to tell.” That propelled me to use that critique to move forward by learning everything I could to make my writing better and stronger.

Jen – What are you working on next?

Kim – I’m currently working on the third and final book of the Family Forever series, tentatively titled “Just Grace”. I hope this will be in readers’ hands this time next year.

Jen – I can’t wait! What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Kim – I crochet and make other crafts, read, and spend time with family, friends, and my dogs Winnie and Daisy. And a special note on that – Daisy is featured in Just Another Dream. And her real-life personality is the same as in the book LOL.

Trinity Sands Beach Club

I’m so excited about my newest writing venture. Back over a year ago, two writer pals and I started kicking around the idea of doing a novella collection together. It may have been Deb Sprinkle who approached me with the idea – I can’t even remember! Then we pulled in Sharon Carpenter, fellow writer, but a newbie to writing fiction!

Meet author Shannon Dunlap

Jen – Hi Shannon! Tell us about yourself (no pressure, right?) 🙂

Shannon – It’s fitting that my four matchmaking heroines spend their days in constant travel, because my own life has involved countless hours on the road. My parents took so many trips when I was young, and of course, I brought a stack of books along. When I finished them, they’d have to stop in whatever town we were near to buy me more.

Books and travel have been my lifelong comfort. I was born in Tennessee, raised in Virginia, went to college in Missouri, taught in a school in Botswana, Africa, and have visited so many countries, I might forget some of them: England, Scotland, South Africa, Zambia, Israel, Italy, Austria, South Korea. And I’m not done yet! It feels like God put this hunger for travel in my heart. I believe he has things for me to do all over the world, and I love knowing He’s my eternal traveling companion.

About Shannon’s books

Jen – I love that! I can only imagine all the things you’ve learned in those different countries. What have you written?

Shannon – I write romance because I like to read romance. My Sweetheart Series is set in a fictional Texas small town named Sweetheart. It has two books (Lone Star Sweetheart and Substitute Sweetheart) with a third releasing in October (Vintage Sweetheart). And my cruise ship series has two books, Love Overboard and my latest Hearts Aweigh.

Hearts Away by Shannon Dunlap

The cheeky “Shippers” are a quartet of matchmakers who retired to live on a cruise ship full-time. Their latest mission is to secure a dreamy Mr. Right for Abby O’Brien, a sunny, optimistic childcare worker for Monarch Cruises.

She loves her job looking after the children of vacationing parents, but harbors one unfulfilled desire: to be a wife and a mother. With his shy five-year-old daughter in tow, divorced elitist lawyer Spencer Randolph Masterson has anything but romance in mind. Writing habits

Jen – As an author myself, I always want to know about other authors’ writing habits. Are you a full-time writer? Plotter or pantser? Tell me all the things!

Shannon – I go where the story leads me, without an outline or a fleshed-out destination (other than it has to have a happy ending). My favorite time to write is in the morning, but I work a day job, which means that doesn’t often happen. I’m a believer in a writer using whatever methods work for her. We can read professional development and craft books to better ourselves, but the same habits don’t always work for everyone. Early or late. Plotter or pantser. Just as long as the words get on the paper.

Shannon Dunlap’s writing goals

Jen – That’s so true. We’re all different and need to do what works best for us. I’d love to hear your goals – why do you write, etc.

Shannon – My books are for people who need a mental vacation from the never-ending Mondays. The Bible says a broken spirit drieth the bones, and there are so many things that suck the moisture from the bones of a believer—bills, work drama, caretaking, unexpected illness. A reader may start my book feeling exhausted and brittle, as if one more crisis will turn her bones to powder, but I hope she doesn’t leave that way. My desire is that my merry romances will water the reader’s core and do it good like a medicine.

What Shannon reads

Jen – That’s beautiful, Shannon. I truly love your heart. What are some books you like to read?

Shannon – Even though my own writing is light on the descriptions, I love the word pictures L.M. Montgomery paints in her books, especially The Blue Castle. As for non-fiction, I’ve really enjoyed reading about body language. It helps me craft more life-like characters and communicate their motivations through something besides dialogue. One of my favorite body language resources is Cues: Master the Secret Language of Charismatic Communication by Vanessa Van Edwards.

Jen – You’re challenging me! I never thought to read body language books to learn to write characters better. Thanks!

Fun facts about Shannon

Jen – Readers love to hear fun facts about authors. Share some fun facts with us!

Shannon – As for likes, I enjoy watching Korean Dramas, listening to Frank Sinatra, and for a favorite drink, I’m a Dr. Pepper gal. Luv it. But the scale has been tipping too high, so I made a switch to Cherry Coke Zero. (I was surprised by how good it tastes!) I admit I still cheat with a Dr. Pepper every now and then.

I also spend the school year as an elementary music teacher, Pre-K3 through 3rd grade. As you can imagine, those little darlins keep my life interesting. This leaves nice, long stretches of summertime for working on novels.

Advice for new authors?

Shannon – Work on building a community now. Even before you receive a contract, connect with other readers and writers on social media. Start a newsletter where people can keep up with your journey, and try to keep a positive, uplifting tone that encourages them. I believe readers like to root for storytellers. If they see the journey, it helps them care more about the book when it releases. Once you have a platform, use it for the ultimate purpose. God has been whispering to me lately about why I do this. It’s not about contracts and sales and awards. It’s about pointing to Him. I need to use my platform to share the Good News.

Book Review: Evolving in Monkey Town by Rachel Held Evans

I heard about Rachel Held Evans a while back, and I even have one of her books. Then I downloaded Evolving in Monkey Town from my Libby app. There are so many aspects of this book that touched me that it might be hard to hit them all, but I’ll try!

The Scopes Monkey Trial

Anyhow, back to the book. The Scopes Monkey Trial is something I’d heard of, but never really knew what it was. It was actually a setup. A man decided he wanted the city of Dayton, TN, to be “on the map.” The ACLU had offered to support any Tennessee schoolteacher who would challenge the state’s anti-evolution laws. The man convinced several other businessmen in Dayton that if they hosted this test trial, the town would reap the economic benefits.

Enter John T. Scopes. I won’t summarize the whole thing except to say that Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan got involved. Read the book if you want to know more. 😉

What the book is really about

Because here’s the thing, Rachel Held Evans’ Evolving in Monkey Town is a candid, honest exploration of faith, doubt, and her personal journey. Evans conveys a deep respect for her evangelical roots even while she questions what she’s learned and how she’s learned it.

I’m not the wordsmith Evans was, but I related to so many of the things she said. Faith is personal. We should make it ours. Sometimes we ask questions to do that. She writes with the clarity of a journalist and the soul of a seeker. At times, she’s warm, funny, and deeply compassionate without being condescending.

Author Jenny Carlisle and her Writing Process

It’s good to have Jenny Carlisle back on the blog! Last August, she told us about her book, Hope Takes the Reins. This time, she’ll talk about her writing process and her book, Faith Moves Mountains!

Jenny’s writing process

Jen – Welcome back, Jenny! This time around, I want to ask more about your writing process. How do you come up with your ideas? 

Jenny – Most of my story ideas have been stewing around in my head for years. I have a cast of characters in mind who are all begging for their tales to be told. Recently, participating in a collection of novellas prompted something entirely new. Then, I started with the commonalities of the other stories and took off from there. My imagination is extremely fertile, which can be both a blessing and a curse. 

Jen – I agree! Sometimes I have to tell those voices to hush! 😉

Jenny’s bio

Jenny has been writing stories since she learned to hold a pencil. She retired from a career in Human Resources for the State of Arkansas. A long-time columnist for Ouachita Life magazine, two collections of her inspirational articles have been self-published. She is past president of American Christian Fiction Writers – Arkansas Chapter. Valuable relationships and recognition have been achieved at writing conferences over the years. Scrivenings Press has published three full-length novels and a novella in the Crossroads series. These books are all contemporary romances. She and her husband, James, live in Benton, Arkansas, where they worship with a service-oriented congregation of the Church of Christ. They are the parents of three married children and eight grandchildren and love participating in all sorts of adventures with them.

Outlining and rough drafts

Jen – In your writing process, do you outline before writing? And do you write a rough draft? 

Jenny –I don’t do a formal outline, but I do several exercises before starting a new book to help me get to know the back story of my characters. Then, I usually think about the beginning, middle and end of a story and have these destinations in mind before I start the first draft. It is sometimes rough, but usually semi-plotted. On the second run-through, the rabbit trails and extra characters will need to be weeded out.

Jen – What themes do you like to use in your books? 

Jenny – My characters are usually on the cusp of adulthood, so I tend to write about their journey to finding their own way in life. They have varying degrees of difficulty understanding that God has the perfect plan. 

My second book, Faith Moves Mountains, is a perfect example. John K. Billings can’t get past the trauma he endured in the military, and Faith Caldwell is testing her freedom after being preoccupied with the recent illness and passing of her mom. They learn that putting the past behind them is key to moving forward.

John Kennedy (John K.) Billings has spent his whole life living up to his hero-inspired name.

Now, back from a traumatic incident in the military, he finds himself running from the fact that he is only human, with real-life struggles to overcome.

Faith Caldwell feels free to pursue her own dreams now that her family’s regularly scheduled rodeo has ended. After helping care for her cancer-stricken mother, she is determined to bring big-city medical expertise to small-town Arkansas. While trying to prove she can fulfill her dream on her own, a new admirer seems determined to pull her down.

Both enjoy the idea of seeing more of the world, but find their hearts are still tied to the mountains of Arkansas and the people who live there.

Can these lifelong neighbors help each other face their weaknesses while following God’s plan for their lives?

Turning points in Jenny’s writing

Jen – Were there pivotal moments or challenges in your writing career that helped define your path?  

Jenny – My turning point came when a trusted mentor advised me to scrap the tired old story that I had been pitching to agents and editors for years. She knew me well enough to suggest that I start over with another story that was on my heart. New characters, new locations, new plot. Hope Takes the Reins was born. This became my first traditionally published novel, and the first in my Crossroads series. 

Jen – How do you deal with criticism or rejection? 

Jenny – Truly, not too well. I have had plenty of practice with rejection, but sometimes I don’t listen to criticism too well. Sometimes, it needs to sink in for a bit before I turn it into a learning experience. I am getting better now that I deal with more than one editor while crafting a book. 

Writing advice

Jen – What’s the best writing advice you’ve received? 

Jenny – At a session hosted by Frank Peretti and Alan ???? at the  2019 ACFW Conference,  their advice to first-time authors was aimed directly at me. They advised that though writing to someone’s formula might create a quick path to publication, it might not be MY book anymore. Write YOUR book, then find the people who believe in it and want to publish it. Shortly after that, my proposal for Hope Takes the Reins was accepted by Scrivenings Press, and the rest is history. 

Jen – I love that advice, and it’s sooo true! If you could have dinner with any author, alive or dead, who would it be and why? 

Jenny – Maybe Catherine Marshall. When I read Christy, I was so impressed with the idea of a book that covered all facets of a woman’s life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. I looked for her bio and found she had passed away years earlier. I would love the chance to tell a pioneer of Christian Fiction how things have changed, and how she affected my life.

Jen – What are you working on next? 

Jenny – I have finished the first draft of a novella for a collection that should come out in the spring of 2026. Then it’s back to the tired old story I was advised to drop, now totally revamped. Am I crazy? We’ll see.

Jen – Love it! We’ve talked a lot about your writing process today. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? 

Jenny – My husband and I are both retired from our full-time jobs. We enjoy large and small adventures together. We have three married children and eight amazing grandchildren, so nothing is better than being included in their lives. 

We have a wonderful church family, where we are members of their JOY group, “Just Older Youth”. We work on projects like building the congregation’s Christmas float or preparing lunch for a crew of missionaries. Monthly potlucks give us a chance to spend time with folks who understand our daily struggles and encourage us to keep looking for God’s daily blessings. 

Recently, I have volunteered as a Journey Partner with Women Equipped, a Christian Women’s Job Corp. During a twelve-week “semester,” I attend a class about goals and eat lunch once a week with one of the students, with the hope of building a mentorship relationship. I find that I benefit as much as they do from this partnership.

Monthly Themed Reading List Recommendations: Nonfiction

Whether you’re an author or a reader, nonfiction books can offer a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. I loved biographies as a child, and recently I’ve started reading them again. In this blog post, I want to share some great nonfiction books for writers and readers.

1. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft” by Stephen King

On of my favorite nonfiction books because Stephen King is so honest. He describes his beginnings as a writer, his addiction, and the chaos that brought to his life, and where he is now. You may not like his early stuff (written in deep addiction), but his newer books are super, in my opinion.

From Amazon: Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. 2. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life” by Anne Lamott

I have Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird in my TBR book pile. I know it is one of the most beloved books on the craft of writing.

From Amazon: For a quarter century, more than a million readers—scribes and scribblers of all ages and abilities—have been inspired by Anne Lamott’s hilarious, big-hearted, homespun advice. Advice that begins with the simple words of wisdom passed down from Anne’s father—also a writer—in the iconic passage that gives the book its title:

“Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write. It was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.’”

3. The Elements of Style” by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White

Every writer can benefit from a solid understanding of grammar and style. The Elements of Style is an essential guide for all writers to learn to master the basics. This book covers important principles of writing clearly and concisely, from word choice to sentence structure. Writers will find it an invaluable resource for refining their prose and ensuring their work is polished and effective.

4. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot

For readers and writers alike, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a compelling, true story that blends science, history, and ethics. Rebecca Skloot’s narrative chronicles the life of Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman whose cells were used without her consent to make groundbreaking medical discoveries. This book serves as a powerful example of how nonfiction can illuminate profound social issues and inspire deep empathy in readers.

From Amazon: Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

5. Zen in the Art of Writing” by Ray Bradbury

I haven’t read Ray Bradbury’s Zen in the Art of Writing, but I think I’d like it!

From Amazon: Part memoir, part philosophical guide, the essays in this book teach the joy of writing. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of putting words together, Bradbury’s zen is found in the celebration of storytelling that drove him to write every day. 

Some nonfiction I’ve read

I’ve read several biographies in the last couple of years that I really liked. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb is amazing! From Amazon: It’s rev­olutionary in its candor, offering a deeply per­sonal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly reveal­ing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them.

Next is Matthew Perry’s Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir. What an insight into the actor’s true life that was full of loss, addiction, and also love. From Amazon: it’s an unforgettable memoir that is both intimate and eye-opening—as well as a hand extended to anyone struggling with sobriety. Unflinchingly honest, moving, and uproariously funny, this is the book fans have been waiting for.

I also really enjoyed When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. It’s inspiring as he describes his role as a patient and physician, even as he is dying. Sad? Yes, but very motivating.

Conclusion: Reading for Inspiration and Growth

This isn’t a very long nonfiction reading list, but it offers a variety of books for both readers and writers. Whether you’re seeking practical advice on writing, a deeper understanding of human nature, or simply looking to explore new ideas, I think these books provide a wealth of knowledge.

Something I have to remind myself of is that reading nonfiction isn’t just about gaining new information—it’s about expanding your horizons, nurturing your creativity, and discovering new perspectives that can inform your own writing and life.

Meet author Susan Lawrence

Today, we’re welcoming Susan Lawrence to the blog! I can’t wait to learn more about her and find out what she’s been up to.

Jen – Hi, Susan! I know you’re a fellow Scrivenings Press author, but I’d love to know more about you!

Susan – I was born on a little farm in Iowa, with a creek bordering our property and forty acres of timber to roam. I loved the outdoors and explored every inch of our property and beyond. Working on the farm taught me the meaning of hard work—helping in the garden, washing eggs for the “egg man,” and pulling weeds (by hand!) in the cornfield. I was the youngest (and possibly the naughtiest), so I thought of ways to escape my mother’s work detail. I would climb to the tree house I built, take more time than I needed for the outhouse, or, inside, crawl in the knee space under the desk to hide with a book.  

We went to Sunday school and worship service in a little white country church. There, I began my faith journey. I can sing with Jen Johnson, “All my life He has been faithful.” In third grade, I was given a workbook that asked the question, Who would you choose to be your best friend? I wrote, “I would choose Jesus.” And I did and I do! 

Even before I started school, I began my love affair with words, books, and writing. I learned to read early, wrote poetry in first grade, and had my first poem published in seventh grade. 

Jen – Wow, seventh grade! That’s exciting! What do you write?

Susan Lawrence’s writing

Susan – I always wanted to write, but I had other dreams as well. I wanted to be a wife, mother, teacher of special needs children, and a horse trainer. God, in His great mercy, gave me all five dreams.  

Not that I haven’t had my share of heartaches and struggles as well. Two of our children have disabilities that nearly wore out this mother’s heart with worry. One son had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Through it all, I knew God upheld me, but I sometimes felt lost in the storms of life. When I write, my struggles become my character’s struggles. 

While my children were small, I would put them down for naps and race to my typewriter to peck out stories and articles for Sunday school papers, magazines, and various other publications. I published my first two family devotionals in 1997 and 1998. (By then I had a computer!) But not until 2007, when I retired from teaching, did I have the time to attempt a novel. My first one, Atonement for Emily Adams, published in 2014, and eight more books followed. 

My latest, It’s the Dog’s Fault, is the first in a three-part series for middle grade children. Told from Hank the rescue dog’s point of view, this story is a hilarious tale with some powerful life lessons about the fruit of the Spirit, especially patience and self-control.

Susan’s goals

Jen – Why do you write, Susan?

Susan – I write for God’s glory. All my books are faith-based and have a gospel message woven into the story. I write because something has been laid on my heart and mind so strongly that I must put pencil to paper (or keyboard to computer.) Most of my books have a dog or cat, because I love living with animals. The current resident in our home is a rescued yellow Lab named Maggie.  

My books also have themes of children with disabilities (or different abilities) and those who are orphaned or adopted. I write for reader’s entertainment, but also, hopefully, to identify with realistic characters, and be moved or inspired by their struggles and victories.  

Advice for new authors

Jen – After a number of years as a writer, yourself, what would you tell a new writer?

Susan – If you have a God-given dream, don’t give up on it. Find ways to use your creativity in the time that you have available. If you love to write, but don’t have time for a novel, try devotions, poetry, short stories, or articles—magazines and Sunday school papers still use these! If your goal is to publish, learn your craft—utilize critique groups, go to conferences, read books on writing, and of course, read, read, read.

Susan Lawrence grew up in rural Iowa and learned to love her Savior, Jesus Christ, at a young age. Her faith has been the foundation of her life, including her writing. Book Review: Shield of the King by MB Mooney

I read Shield of the King a little over a year ago. It was one of the first fantasy books I’ve ever read, and boy was it good! My Instagram post at the time says it has great characters and lots of depth.

My thoughts on Shield of the King

The author and I are in a Word Weavers critique group together, and besides being an all-around great guy, he’s a masterful storyteller. Shield of the King is a fantasy adventure that is clean and full of a richly imagined world. I loved that Elowen was a female elfess who wanted more than anything to be a hero.

Yay for female heroes!

Like I said, I’ve not read much fantasy, but this one hooked me. The characters have depth, and the world they live in captured my attention right away. Elowen became my hero as she bucked the system – women were not allowed to hold positions of power in her world.

One of my favorite lines was early in the book. She was talking to her father about her teacher, who mocked a mighty female warrior, an elf of faith. Her father said:

“The Keeper (teacher) was wrong, but you cannot allow others and their actions to control you. You must rule your own heart and mind. Otherwise, they will win.”

Then he goes on to say, “Because the world is full of stupid, wrong people.”

Elowen’s father is just as great a character as Elowen! Oh, have I mentioned the war lizards? Better than horses, they say! The funny thing is Elowen befriends the lizards, Zaran and Laila.

With great characters and amazing world-building, Shield of the King makes my list of some of the best writing I’ve read.

I give this book an N rating, as in Nothing to Worry About! Even your teens could read this!

One of my BFF’s gave me a customized book embosser. It’s so fun, and a great way for authors to make their books feel more personal and official. A personalized book embosser lets mom stamp her books with a “From the library of [Name]” mark.

Literary Candles

There are many candles inspired by famous books or writers, with scents that evoke literary environments. You can find candles with titles like “Old Books,” “Library,” or “Bookish Delight,” perfect for creating a cozy writing atmosphere.

One of my favorite places to get bookish T-shirts is Piper & Ivy. Their Ts and sweatshirts fit great, and they have plenty of fun ones to choose from.

Typewriter or Vintage Writing Tools

A vintage typewriter can be a beautiful and nostalgic gift for a writer who loves the tactile experience of writing. It also serves as a decorative piece of art for her office. My youngest daughter bought me the typewriter in the picture.

Books by Her Favorite Authors

Last, but not least, if there’s an author or book series she loves, gifting her a special edition or signed copy can be an extremely thoughtful and personal gesture.
