The Power of Guest Posting for Writers
Lately I’ve been blogging more for readers, but today is all about writers and the benefit of guest posting.
We all hear it – you must maintain a solid online presence! One strategy that can help us as writers to reach new audiences and build authority in our niche is guest posting.
By contributing content to other blogs within our niche, we get to share our expertise and interact with other audiences. In this blog post, I’ll explore the benefits of guest posting and why it should be a part of your content marketing strategy.

Guest posting increases your reach and visibilityOne of the top benefits of guest posting is the opportunity to tap into a new audience. When we contribute to a blog with an established readership, we’re exposing our ideas, expertise, and brand to a wider pool of potential followers. This is especially valuable if the blog you’re guest posting on has an audience that aligns with your target demographic. For writers, this is probably their readership.
By posting on blogs within our niche, we help readers discover our website and social media profiles. These new visitors may not have encountered our content otherwise, and our guest posting acts to build a relationship with them.
Builds authority and credibility
In any industry, credibility is vital. When we write for reputable blogs within our niche, we position ourselves as an authority. Readers will associate us with the expertise and thought leadership of the blog we’re posting on, which helps to increase trust in our brand.
Having readers trust our brand or our writing style can lead to us being recognized as experts in our field, further elevating our professional reputation. If we consistently contribute high-quality, well-researched content, we’ll gain recognition and respect from both readers and other industry professionals.
Improves SEO and drives traffic**My confession – I have tried to wrap my mind around SEO, but it still seems like a mystery.
However, I know that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an essential part of digital marketing. Guest posting can directly benefit our SEO efforts. Most blogs allow us to include a backlink to our websites within our guest posts or author bios. These backlinks serve as a signal to search engines that our content is valuable and relevant, improving our website’s search engine ranking.
As more blogs link to our sites, we not only drive traffic directly from those blogs but also increase our site’s domain authority (DA) over time, which can lead to better visibility in search results. The more high-quality backlinks we have, the stronger our SEO profile will become.
Jeff Goins says, “According to my friend, Mike the Search Engine Guru, when it comes to SEO, guest posting on other sites is five times as valuable as creating new content on your own site.”
Guest posting builds relationships within our nicheWriting is a solitary endeavor, as we all know. Guest posting is a great way to network with other bloggers, writers, and industry leaders. By collaborating with others in our niche, we can form lasting relationships that may lead to future opportunities, such as teaching at conferences, co-writing novels or novellas, or even partnering on other content projects.
What is a niche? For authors, a “niche” is a specific area of expertise or a particular genre or subgenre within the broader field of writing where they specialize and can stand out. Just an FYI – niche can be pronounced niche, niche, or niche. Just kidding. Hear different acceptable pronunciations here: Merriam-Webster.
As we establish rapport with other writers, we’ll open doors to even more exposure, collaboration, and growth. I see guest posting as one of the best ways to interact with other writers!
Helps gain valuable feedback and insightWriting for other blogs gives us an opportunity to gain valuable feedback and insights from readers outside our usual audience. These readers may have different perspectives and may provide comments that challenge or broaden our thinking.
By engaging with our audience through guest posts, we can refine our content, discover what resonates most with our target audience, and adjust our writing strategies accordingly.
3 of my guest posts: The Pros & Cons of Joining Critique Groups for Writers The Sandwich Generation Book Signing 101 Increases social media engagementWhen you guest post on a popular blog, you’re likely to see a boost in your social media engagement. Readers who enjoy your content may share it on their own social media profiles, leading to more exposure and potentially more followers for you. This exposure can be especially valuable if your guest post is published on a platform that has a strong social media presence.

Additionally, engaging with readers through social media can help foster a stronger relationship with your audience, allowing you to connect with them on a more personal level and grow your online community.
Guest posting helps establish a diverse content portfolioGuest posting allows you to diversify your content and demonstrate a broader range of expertise. By contributing to different blogs, you can explore various angles of your niche, expand on topics you haven’t covered on your own blog, and reach different types of readers. This diversity can help position you as a versatile and well-rounded authority in your field.
According to Neil Patel, “Guest blogging on reputable sites is a great way to leverage the success of blogs that are already popular in your industry.”
In conclusionGuest posting is a powerful, effective, and mutually beneficial content marketing strategy. It helps increase your reach, improve your SEO, build relationships with other industry leaders – AKA other writers – and establish yourself as an authority in your niche.
Whether you’re looking to grow your audience, boost traffic to your website, or diversify your content strategy, guest posting is an investment that pays off in both the short and long term.
So, why wait? Start identifying blogs in your niche that align with your brand values, pitch your ideas, and begin reaping the many benefits of guest posting. Happy writing!

Meet author Terri Wangard
Terri Wangard is a new writing friend! She also writes for Scrivenings Press, and I’m excited to have her on my blog!
**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Jen – Hi, Terri! Tell me a little about yourself.
Terri – I’ve lived in all four continental time zones. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Michigan for six years, Utah for a year of grad school, Southern California, and back to Wisconsin. Utah was my first time living in the mountains. The university has a huge whitewashed Y high on the mountain. My roommate and I decided to hike up to it. We went straight up. Arriving exhausted, we discovered a zig-zag trail for easy climbing. Yes, we took the trail going back down.
Jen – Sometimes we discover the easier path after doing the hardest! What have you written?
Terri – My new release is my sixth World War II novel, plus I have a WWII novella. I also have a Lusitania novel and a World War I novel with the same characters. Next year, the third book in the current series will release. All books are available on Amazon.
No Leaves in Autumn by Terri Wangard
Marie Foubert grew up in an orphanage and struggles with feelings of rejection. As a Red Cross recreation worker, she interacts with the American men based in Iceland during World War II. Her growing attraction to seaplane pilot Stefan Dabrowski excites and concerns her. Won’t he disappear from her life like everyone else?
Stefan hears his commanding officer describe him as exciting as last night’s bathwater. One of his colleagues constantly berates him because of his Polish heritage and his superior flying skill. Despite being the squadron’s most productive pilot, he is threatened with court martial. A showdown approaches to prove who’s the better pilot and the better man.
Marie’s cousin, passing through Iceland, tries to see her after spotting her photo in Life magazine. She declines to meet him, but Stefan encourages her to do so and learn why no one wanted her. She may gain a family after all.
More about Terri WangardJen – What are your habits when writing?
Terri – Most of my writing occurs on the weekends with a few early mornings before work. I’ve tried outlining, but that doesn’t work well for me. I usually have the arc of the story in mind and have notes scattered around. Of course, when I need those notes, I can’t find them.
Jen – I can relate! I’m not a plotter either. I’m sure you had to do research for your story. Tell us about that.
Terri – Historicals require research. Fortunately, and as a former librarian, I love research. My first WWII series centered on a B-17 air group. Lots of information exists on B-17s, which made it easy. My current series is based on unusual settings. Finding sources was difficult. Most of the sources are out-of-print, so I relied on secondhand book stores. The local library made an exception to borrow a book from outside the area, but they won’t do that again. I really needed a rare book through interlibrary loan for my next book.
Terri’s favorite booksJen – What do you like to read?
Terri – Among my earliest favorites were Maj Lindman’s Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka series. My love of historical fiction may have come from Sally Watson’s The Hornet’s Nest. I’ve read most of Lori Wick’s books. Today’s favorite authors include Elizabeth Camden and Sarah Sundin. I read a lot of historical nonfiction and biographical works.
Jen – I highlighted the two books/series you liked as a child because I’ve never heard of them. They look wonderful!
Terri Wangard’s bio:
Terri Wangard grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, during the Lombardi Glory Years. Her first Girl Scout badge was the Writer. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in library science, she lives in Wisconsin. Her WWII research included going for a ride in a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. Classic Boating Magazine, a family business since 1984, keeps her busy as an associate editor. She also serves on the Genesis and First Impressions contest teams, will assume the job of Carol Contest coordinator next year, and is secretary of the Wisconsin Southeast ACFW chapter.
You can find Terri on Facebook and Instagram. You can subscribe to her newsletter here: Terri’s Newsletter
Fun factsJen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know! (Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verse? What do you do in your free time? Cat or dog person?)
Terri – I don’t drink tea or coffee; water is my preference. I love spring and autumn, the colorful seasons. Favorite Bible verses include Col. 3:1-2 (Set your hearts on things above. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.), Heb 12:2 (fixing our eyes on Jesus).
I bike ride every chance I get, including during winter as long as the temperature is above 40. Through bike riding I’ve met most of the neighborhood dogs. If there are any cats, they stay in their houses. Because of allergies, we couldn’t have furry pets.
Tip for new authors from Terri WangardJen – What advice would you give to new authors?
Terri – Get involved with American Christian Fiction Writers. Writing is a solitary endeavor, but you need support.
Jen – I agree, support is crucial! ACFW has so many opportunities to learn. Readers can also check out my Resource Library. It has a list of writing conferences for ideas. Thanks for being on the blog, Terri!

Monthly Themed Reading List Recommendations: Science Fiction
I’ve never been a huge science fiction fan, but I’ve recently read a few sci-fi and/or fantasy books. Science fiction is a genre that is growing and evolving as society changes.
According to Scified.com, “Science fiction is a genre that deals with futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology. While it is not limited to any one genre, it often includes elements of fantasy and/or dystopian fiction. Some of the earliest works in sci-fi are classics such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.”
We’ve all heard of Frankenstein, right?
So let’s get to some recommendations for clean science fiction!
**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Links to clean science fictionBecause I’m not super familiar with this genre, I’ve found some links to lists of clean science fiction.

Sci-fi titles recommended to me:20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne – “A classic science fiction adventure book about a world tour underwater, written by a French author, and first serialized in a twice-weekly publication.”
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card: “Brilliant young boy trains as a soldier to lead Earth’s defense against hostile alien invaders, facing psychological battles amidst isolation and pressure.” (Also available on Kindle Unlimited.)
The Hybrid Series by Candace Kade – “Lee Urban is living a lie. In a society where everyone’s DNA determines their destiny, being a Natural means automatic relegation to the gritty and dangerous Outskirts. With the harnessed power of gene editing, the ability to create a super-human race has transformed the world and offered the opportunity of a genetically enhanced life. But only to those who can afford it. Born a Natural, Lee Urban was adopted into the Enhanced high society of the Asian Federation and forced to conceal her genetic roots. When her dream of attending Peking University becomes a reality, she is determined to go despite a warning from a mysterious source.”
More sci-fi recsThe Talionis Series by C.J. Milacci – “Her abduction was just the beginning. Her survival will change everything. Bria Averton’s quiet life near the ruins of Portland, Maine, is shattered when she and hundreds of other teens are forcibly taken to the hidden military city of Talionis. The city transforms them into soldiers for a ruthless regime under the unforgiving gaze of Commander Ark. The grueling training is designed to break them—but Bria refuses to succumb.”
FreeFalling by J. L. Burrows – “Under the Dome, peace reigns … forcefully. One hundred and eighty years in the future, the U.S. government eradicates warfare and violence. Serenity should feel safe, but she doesn’t. Serenity Knowles knows two things for certain. Finishing her government-assigned community service as a teacher is mandatory in order to start her adult life. And stopping those in power from reconditioning two of her favorite students will ruin her chances at a future and a life. Everything she thought she once knew to be true, suddenly is now in question after her typically peaceful girls fight in plain view of everyone at school. The Federal Bureau of Acceptance storms in and collects them both for reconditioning—chemical brainwashing. With no one to help, Serenity is driven into a wild rescue and escape plan. The girls can’t be made into shadow children, brainwashed and limited to a menial future.” (On Kindle Unlimited.)

But in spite of their tenuous treaty with the ruling clans, TSC has plans for the backward planet. And they’re not alone. After a catastrophic explosion, Kersei Dragoumis awakens in a derelict shuttle, alone, injured, and ignorant of the forbidden technology that has swept her into a nightmare. Meet author Elaine Cooper
Elaine Cooper is a fellow Scrivenings Press author whom I haven’t gotten to meet in person yet! Hopefully we’ll be able to soon. Until then, let’s get to know her a little better.
**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Jen – Elaine, I’m so glad to have you on my blog. Tell me a little about yourself.
Elaine – I grew up in CT and MA. As a child I LOVED visiting the historical sites where the American Revolution began. Now I write about that time period in my fiction!
Jen – I lived in northern Virginia as a younger child, and I agree that the American Revolution was fascinating! What have you written?
Elaine – Most of my books are still available on Amazon and/or Barnes and Noble website. My first Deer Run Series (3 books) are still available as are “Fields of the Fatherless”, “Scarred Vessels,” “Chiseled on the Heart,” “Bethany’s Calendar” and my most recent Dawn of America series, “Love’s Kindling,” “Winter’s Ravage” and the future release “Courier’s Return.” (More about that soon …)
Elaine Cooper’s bio
Multi-award winning author Elaine Marie Cooper is the author of “Scarred Vessels,” “Love’s Kindling,” (New publisher in 2021), “Saratoga Letters,” “Fields of the Fatherless” and the Deer Run Saga: “Road to Deer Run,” “Promise of Deer Run” and “Legacy of Deer Run”. “Bethany’s Calendar” is the author’s first non-fiction book and describes the journey traveled with her daughter as she was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor.
Cooper’s passions are her family, her faith in Christ, and the history of the American Revolution, a frequent subject of her historical fiction. She grew up in Massachusetts, the setting for many of her novels. You can visit her website and blog at: http://www.elainemariecooper.com.
Elaine is also a contributing writer to “Fighting Fear, Winning the War at Home” by Edie Melson, and “I Choose You,” a romance Anthology. Her freelance work has appeared in both newspapers and magazines, and she blogs on her website at www.elainemariecooper.com, as well as Heroes, Heroines, and History blog.
Research for Elaine CooperJen – Considering what you write, this feels like a silly question, but did you have to do research for your story?
Elaine –I have to giggle at the question, ” Do you have to do research for your stories?” My books are birthed through tons of research! I have learned so much about history through my research. It is exhausting and fascinating!
Jen – I can only imagine! I love history, so I know it’s fascinating.
Elaine’s goalsJen – This is something I love to ask authors because I believe it shows their heart. What are your goals when you write?
Elaine – I write out of obedience to God. My life might be simpler without the pressure of book contracts plus reading so many non-fiction books, but then I’d feel like I was not doing my part for the kingdom.
Jen – I love that. You’re so right! What kind of books do you like to read?
Elaine – I am a huge fan of Laura Frantz! Her books are amazing! Her pen is such a paintbrush of artistic language. I read lots of non-fiction about the American Revolution. Although I write fiction, my desire is to base my stories on actual events with an occasional actual historical figure appearing on my pages!
Scarred Vessels by Elaine Cooper
In 1778 Rhode Island, the American Revolution rallies the Patriots to fight for freedom. But the slavery of black men and women from Africa, bartered for rum, is a travesty that many in America cannot ignore. The seeds of abolition are planted even as the laws allowing slavery in the north still exist.Lydia Saunders, the daughter of a slave ship owner, grew up with the horror of slavery. It became more of a nightmare when, at a young age, she is confronted with the truth about her father’s occupation. She is burdened with the guilt of her family’s sin, as she struggles to make a difference in whatever way she can. When she loses her husband in the battle for freedom from England, she makes a difficult decision that will change her life forever.
Sergeant Micah Hughes is too dedicated to serving the fledgling country of America to consider falling in love. When he carries the tragic news to Lydia Saunders about her husband’s death, he is appalled by his attraction to the young widow. Micah wrestles with his feelings for Lydia while he tries to focus on helping the cause of freedom. He trains a group of former slaves to become capable soldiers on the battlefield. Tensions both on the battlefield and on the home front bring hardship and turmoil that threaten to endanger them all.
When Lydia and Micah are faced with saving the life of a black infant in danger, can they survive this turning point in their lives?
More about Elaine CooperJen – Where can we find you on social media?
Elaine – I am mostly on Facebook, but have recently dabbled on Instagram, and on my website.
Jen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know! (Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verse? What do you do in your free time? Cat or dog person?)
Elaine – What free time??? LOL!
I love both coffee and tea!
My favorite Bible Verse is Proverbs 31: 8-9
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Jen – Elaine, I know you’ve had a rough couple of years and have gotten behind in your Dawn of America series. Tell us what’s going on.
Elaine – It has been a few years since I’ve worked on my most recent book series for Scrivenings Press. My husband, Steve, had Vascular Dementia from a stroke, then developed Alzheimer’s. It was a miserable and heartbreaking five years. Then in the middle of the night on September 2, 2023, the hospice nurse called me to say he was unresponsive. I was in shock. I started the 2 hour drive to his Memory Care facility, only to receive a call while still on my way that he had passed away. I pulled over to the side of the road and cried and cried. Our little dog Mocha was in the back seat. Her silence barked volumes.
I moved back to Des Moines where Steve and I had lived for 30 years. I packed up Mocha and our 2 cats and hauled everything and everyone back to Iowa. I hate moving but I knew I needed to return “home.”
Numbness set in. The last thing I could focus on was writing. I was exhausted all the time. Winter came and filled up my apartment parking lot with snow. I was as frigid as the chilling wind from the north. I rarely saw my family. Their choice, not mine. I missed them terribly.
Eventually spring emerged and flowers began to sprout from the planters on my porch. Loneliness consumed me at times. I kept receiving emails from eharmony.com. I fully intended to ignore their promises of love-ever-after, but one day grew sick of their persistence. Without spending a dime, I accepted a free weekend. The next thing I knew, I met Rick and did my best to keep him at arm’s length. That didn’t last long.
Last July, Rick and I said our marriage vows at a beautiful park in Iowa.
Jen – Wow, that’s amazing. God is kind and loving. Tell us more.
Elaine – Although Rick and I are very happy together, I did lose my sister, Jo Ann, to lung cancer in January. I am heartbroken once again. Today, after taking my 14-year-old dachshund to the vet, Rick and I discovered that Rocco’s heart condition is worse. The first person I thought of calling was my sister, Jo Ann. I think of her so often and wish I could call her.
But that is life, is it not? And Jesus said it would be so. In John 16: 33, Jesus says: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
God has been gracious to me and I am so grateful for Rick. The Lord sent him to me because He knew I needed him. I didn’t realize I needed him, but the Lord knew. And He loves me.
Jen – Thank you for sharing your heart and writing life with us, Elaine!

Book Review: Cake That! by Heather Greer
I love reality baking shows – do you? My daughter-in-law got me hooked on the British one. But even before that, I read Cake That! by Heather Greer, and I loved it! I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

Cake That! by Heather Greer
Ten bakers. Nine days. Only one winner.
Competing on the Cake That baking show is a dream come true for Livvy Miller, but debt on her cupcake truck and an expensive repair make her question if it’s one she should chase. Her best friend, Tabitha, encourages Livvy to trust God to care for The Sugar Cube, win or lose.
Family is everything to Evan Jones. His parents always gave up their dreams so their children could achieve theirs. Winning Cake That would let him give back some of what they’ve sacrificed by allowing him to give them the trip they’ve always talked about but could never afford.
As the contestants live and bake together, more than the competition heats up. Livvy and Evan have a spark from the start, but they’re in it to win. Neither needs the distraction of romance. Unwanted attention from Will, another competitor, complicates matters. Stir in strange occurrences to the daily baking assignments, and everyone wonders if a saboteur is in the mix.
With the distractions inside and outside the Cake That kitchen, will Livvy or Evan rise above the rest and claim the prize? Or does God have more in store for them than they first imagined?

GENRE
Christian romance
AVAILABILITY
Amazon (Kindle Unlimited, eBook, Paperback)
My thoughts on Cake That!I stayed up late to finish this book! Heather Greer has a way of making her characters so real. Main character and food truck owner, Livvy, is all polka dots and headbands, which makes her a great TV personality. Her BFF, Tabitha, keeps her grounded as well as surrounded in prayer.
When Livvy gets to the set of Cake That and meets the other contestants, drama abounds. Just like what we see on reality TV shows. Plus, there’s that spark between her and Evan that kept me reading, especially after he kisses her and then says he regrets it.

Ouch, Evan, that was Livvy’s first kiss!
Okay, he earns some redemption later in the book, but I’m not spoiling that.
There are several themes that run through this book, but my favorite is the theme of forgiveness. That’s something that always needs to be talked about and shown, and Greer does a great job with it in the story.
Faith is a big part of this book, and it’s woven throughout the pages in a way that’s not preachy, just realistic in living life.
Cake That! was such a fun read – Faith-based, clean, and a fun look inside a reality TV show.
I give this book an N rating, as in Nothing to Worry About! Even your teens could read this!

Beth Westcott’s backgroundJen – I’m excited to have you on the blog, Beth. Tell me a little about yourself.

Beth – Although I was born on Long Island and lived there the first six years of my life, I grew up on a small farm in upstate New York, the youngest of seven siblings. My husband and I served in ministry, mostly in small towns in rural New York, with a few years in Northeastern Pennsylvania with Child Evangelism Fellowship before he became a pastor. I received Christ as Savior as a child, and He has never failed me.
I think my husband’s cancer in 1984 increased my faith the most of anything that happened. God showed His love and care in so many ways, and God’s family supported us and prayed for us. God healed Frank of his cancer.
Jen – That’s amazing! I’d love to hear that story sometime. I know you’ve written for Scrivenings Press, tell me about your books.
Beth – I have four contemporary Christian romance novels published. Meadow Song, Heart’s Desire, A Heart’s Journey, Her Heart’s Longing, and a novella “Snowflakes and Puppy Love” in the collection Pets Amore. Another novel, Melody of Life, is scheduled for release on August 26, 2025. This is a sequel to Meadow Song. My books are published by Scrivenings Press and are available on Amazon and with other booksellers.
Jen – You can find all of Beth’s books here!
**Note – all Scrivenings Press books are on Kindle Unlimited!
Blurbs for Pets Amore
“Out-of-the-box Valentines” by Amy R. Anguish—Kimberly Winters loves being a kindergarten teacher on Valentine’s Day. But she never expects one of her students to show up with his hamster … or his uncle. Trey Jones doesn’t mind helping out his sick sister by dropping off Rylan at school. Staying to take his sister’s place as “room mom” is a whole different deal, but how can he turn down the adorable teacher? It’s a day full of unexpected surprises for both of them, including each learning to think out of the box when it comes to romance.
“No Butts About It” by Linda Fulkerson—When real estate consultant and confirmed bachelor Charles Sterling’s brother and sister-in-law are killed in a car crash, they leave him a surprise in their will—their five-year-old daughter. Enamored by a character in a popular children’s book, the girl has one request for her uncle-turned-father: a pet goat. As Blossom Clarke struggles to fulfill her deceased father’s dream of developing her family’s property into a goat rescue center, she has no time for city dwellers. But when Charles Sterling shows up to buy a goat, that dream borders on becoming a nightmare. Especially when his company discovers her property checks off all the boxes requested by a high-power client.
“Pegboards, Parrots, and Pickup Lines” by Heather Greer—Charlotte Herring wants one thing—to prove she can succeed on her own. But to avoid failure, she needs the people of Brookview to accept her and her antique store. For years, Tyson Abbott’s only goal was to realize his father’s dreams for the family hardware store. After meeting the town’s newest resident, he adds a new goal—helping Charlotte find her place in Brookview. With a parrot named Cracker Jack paving the way for their partnership to become a romance, Charlotte and Tyson see more than the dreams for their stories coming true. But when their plans conflict and past hurts resurface, will they lose their dreams and each other?
“Snowflakes and Puppy Love” by Beth E. Westcott—When Cooper Stiles walks in the door of Archer Books, his stunning blue eyes and friendly smile pull at Brianna Kinney’s heart. He’s the first man she’s attracted to since becoming a widow. The new clerk in Robin Archer’s bookstore catches Cooper’s eye. Brianna’s love for children and her cute puppy are captivating, but he doesn’t have time for dating. His current priority is caring for his nephew and niece while their mother, his dead brother’s wife, fulfills a work commitment overseas. And he’s not going to get caught up in any more match-making schemes.
Beth Westcott and her writing habitsJen - Do you have a certain time of day you like to write? Do you follow an outline? Where do you get your ideas? What do you like most about writing? Plotter or pantser?
Beth – I write best in the morning. I don’t have an office, so it can be distracting writing at the kitchen table, but it gets done. Ideas come from life, my experiences, and what I’ve witnessed, and my writing is influenced by my Christian faith.
I like to write because I enjoy using words and putting them together in a clear, meaningful way. Also, I see writing as a gift from God to use for His glory. I use outlining as a tool to get started and to develop characters and plot, but I’m comfortable changing direction as I write.
Beth Westcott
A lifelong lover of books and reading, Beth Westcott’s first Christian romance novel, Meadow Song, debuted in 2018 with Mantle Rock Publishing, republished by Scrivenings Press in 2020. Scrivenings also published her Three Sisters Series, Heart’s Desire, A Heart’s Journey, and Her Heart’s Longing. Lillenas Drama published some of her church holiday manuscripts in their Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving Program Builders. Several devotions appeared in Penned for the Heart and one in The Secret Place. Her short story “Sadie and the Princess” is included in Heart-warming Horse Stories on Amazon. Snowflakes and Puppy Love is Beth’s first novella.
Beth and her husband have three adult children and five granddaughters. Their grandson is in heaven. She enjoys reading, music, gardening, sewing, and photography.
With Child Evangelism Fellowship and in pastoral ministry in several churches, Beth worked alongside Frank for 38 years. She taught Bible classes to children, teens, and women and participated in church music ministry. A 4-H member for nine years, she became a 4-H leader when her children belonged to 4-H, and she homeschooled her children for twelve years. She now resides with her husband in Otego, New York.
Connect with Beth on her blog, BookBub, Facebook, and Goodreads.
Research for Beth’s booksJen – Did you have to do research for your story? If so, what did you find most interesting?
Beth – Although I write about everyday life, some research is still necessary. When one of my characters went into the Air Force, I contacted a recruiter for the information I needed. I researched online about an illness.
Beth’s goalsJen – What are your writing goals?
Beth – I write because I believe it’s God’s gift to be used for His glory. I love putting together words and creating a story. I’ve also written a few poems. I love the sound and cadence of words. Of course, I want my readers to enjoy reading my books, but I also want to share God’s light and truth through my words.
More about Beth WestcottJen – I’d love to know some fun facts about you!
Beth – Favorite season: spring; favorite Bible verse: Proverbs 3:5,6; things I enjoy: time spent with family, gardening, sewing, and photography (totally amateur).
Jen – What is your advice for new authors?
Beth – Learn the craft, connect with others in the writing community, and don’t give up on your calling.

She plans to fill her thirties with adventure. As she awaits the final paperwork for a humanitarian trip to South Africa, she accepts a short-term nursing position in a small Midwestern town. The last thing she needs is a handsome local catching her eye. How inconvenient is that?

But with her husband gone, it falls to her to give their son the father-son trip they daydreamed about when he was alive. Authentically Izzy by Pepper Basham – Izzy Edgewood is a wannabe bookstore owner, quote queen, and Lord of the Rings nerd who has been waiting for Prince Charming to sweep her off her sneakered feet. Meet author Bruce Hammack
I met Bruce Hammack and his lovely wife, Joyce, at the Scrivenings Press writing conference – ScrivCon – last fall. He writes clean-read detective fiction, and it’s very good! Read on to get to know him better.
**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Meet Bruce Hammack
Jen – Tell me about yourself, Bruce – Where did you grow up? What happened in your life that increased your faith in God?
Bruce – My father was an Air Force officer, so we moved frequently in my formative years. I’m a prodigal Texan who returned home. At last count I’ve lived in about eighteen different cities, in multiple states, and one foreign country. My wife and I are finally settled in Central Texas… at least, that’s today’s plan. England was one of the most interesting places I ever lived, and I felt the coldest. Even five years in the mountains of Colorado didn’t compare to the rainy, miserable English weather. Other stops of interest along the way were Branson, Missouri, and Franklin, Tennessee.
As for my spiritual journey, it’s a story of God’s faithful pursuit of a sinner. My parents were nominal believers during my childhood. Dad died when he was 47. I was 14. Mom died this past July at 102. I had the privilege of Baptizing her when she was in her 70s. As for my spiritual journey, I can sum it up as thirty-one years a heathen and thirty-nine years as a born-again believer.
Jen – I love that. And the chance to baptize your mom – wow! So, tell us about what you’ve written.
Bruce – My genre is Clean-Read Detective Fiction, with no on-screen violence, sex, or gory autopsies. My protagonists have strong morals, but they’re not preachy. They show their beliefs by actions and combat evil (murder) with God-given problem-solving skills. I strive to make the stories difficult, but not impossible, to discover who done it. We (my wife and I) will release novel #25 in March. I’ve already started on #26. I’m currently alternating writing novels between two series. The next book out is Murder on the Neches, from the Fen Maguire Mystery Series. The next book out after that will be The Monument Murders, from the Smiley and McBlythe mystery series (June is the plan).
All my books are distributed wide, which means they can be ordered from all the usual suspects: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google Play, your local library, etc.
The first novel in the Smiley and McBlythe Mystery series: Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells…Rifle Shells? by Bruce Hammack
Blind private investigator Steve Smiley and his partner hear a rifle shot. Hordes of Christmas shoppers scatter as a famous big-game hunter drops to the sidewalk. They grab the beautiful teen who was arguing with the man and flee to safety. The girl, the victim’s adopted daughter, has one passionate request: find her birth parents.
Smiley’s search for the truth about the girl’s adoption intertwines repeatedly with the murder investigation—and uncovers a shocking secret. Like it or not, he must first identify the killer in order to discover the truth about the teen’s adoption.
A host of suspects line up like Santa’s reindeer. Can Smiley make this the best Christmas ever—or will death and heartache be the only presents under the tree?
Bruce’s writing habitsJen – Tell me about your writing habits.
Bruce – My writing habits have varied over the years. My preference is to get up early, exercise, eat breakfast and write. I’ve settled on a system that allows me to write four to five books per year. Each book is between sixty and sixty-five thousand words. I don’t outline in the traditional sense of the word, but I do follow a rather strict set of guidelines as to when certain things happen in the story. The murder must occur, and the hero must start investigating the crime within the first sixth of the book. Every one of the book’s six major sections has a job to do. The magic happens when I start writing, not knowing the specifics of each chapter. It isn’t unusual for my characters to take the story in a direction I wasn’t expecting. You could say that I’m a pantser with guardrails.
What I like most about writing is the positive feedback we receive from our customers. Our tribe is so appreciative they’ve found stories that challenge them to solve the mystery without the shock of gratuitous profanity and graphic violence.

Jen – Pantser with guardrails – what a perfect description! And I know readers do appreciate mysteries that are clean. What inspired you to start writing?
Bruce – It all started about ten years ago. My wife and I help support a missionary family in Uruguay. I was looking for a way to supplement our retirement income and give me a purpose later in life. Joyce wasn’t crazy about her job either. My missionary friend was writing a children’s book. I said, “If he can write a book, so can I.” To make a long story a little shorter, I wrote eight and a half novels before I realized I didn’t know what I was doing. I got serious about learning how to write, and my wife retooled herself to run the business side of things. To quote a cliché, the rest is history, but I like to say it’s HIS story because God gave it to us.
Jen – Yes! I love that. Do you have to do research for your story? If so, what did you find most interesting?
Research for Bruce’s storiesBruce – Some research is done for every story, but not as much as some authors do. Take the next book to be published, Murder on the Neches. Joyce and I traveled to East Texas and stayed at a resort on Lake Palestine, which is fed by the Neches River. This gave me a feel for the river, the lake, and the setting. My current work in progress, The Monument Murder, takes place at the Battle of San Jacinto Monument and the surrounding cities. Joyce and I just returned from a fact-finding visit and to get a feel for the area. The vibe will show up between the lines of the story. Three previous books were set in the Caribbean following a cruise we took.
Bruce Hammack shares his writing goalsJen – Writing is the ultimate travel guide! Will you share your goals with us?
Bruce – My primary goal is to continue writing as long as I can. I hope to write between forty and fifty more books by the time I’m eighty.
Why do I write? Great question. It came as a huge shock when we discovered people want more books like the ones I write. The audience is there for well-crafted books that speak of justice without gore, relationships that don’t make you blush, and morality that is timeless.
Jen – I totally agree. What books do you like to read?
Bruce – Unlike most writers, I was not a serious reader (or student) growing up. I’m still not, but when I find a writer I like, I’ll read an entire series. While in college, I took a course in detective fiction. My major was criminal justice as was my first career choice. I have a deep appreciation for the reasoning power of Sherlock Holmes, but I love the snappy dialogue of hard-boiled detectives. If I want to read a challenging historical detective fiction novel, I’ll reach for something in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R. King. (Be sure to bring a dictionary.)
For craft books, I read everything that was available in our local library, as well as investing in a small library of my own. The most useful book on writing I’ve found is John Truby’s The Anatomy of Genre.
How to get in touch with BruceJen -Are you involved in social media? Where can we find your blog and newsletter?
Bruce – I am on Facebook and Instagram, but my favorite way to engage with fans is by newsletter. We offer free stories, put on sales, keep up to date on what’s coming next, and have the occasional contest. Readers can go here for a free Smiley-McBlythe mystery.
Fun facts about Bruce HammackJen – Share a fun fact your readers would love to know!
Bruce – Favorite season: Fall and spring. They each last about one week in Central Texas. I’m allergic to cold, damp weather. Really! It’s called urticaria, also known as hives. Antihistamines help.
Jen – I have chronic urticaria, so I feel your pain! If you could offer advice to new authors, what would it be?
Bruce – First: Decide if you want to be a traditionally published author or go Indi or hybrid. If you go Indi, marry someone who’s willing to run the sales, marketing, & business for you. Read books on writing, watch YouTube videos, and join a writer’s group. Treat your job as a business.
Bruce’s bio
Drawing from his extensive background in criminal justice, Bruce Hammack writes contemporary, clean-read detective and crime mysteries. He is the author of the Fen Maguire Mystery series, the Smiley and McBlythe Mystery series, and the Star of Justice series. Having lived in eighteen cities around the world, he now lives in the Texas hill country with his wife of thirty-plus years.
You can find out about his latest release at Bruce Hammack. Follow him on social media on Facebook and Instagram.
Bruce Hammack, a native Texan, began his professional writing career in the tenth grade when the local Rotary Club sponsored a writing contest for students in civics class. To the amazement of students and teachers alike, he won the prize of a twenty-five-dollar savings bond.
After retiring from a career in criminal justice, Bruce picked up the proverbial pen again. He now draws on his extensive background with law enforcement (and criminals) to write contemporary, clean-read detective and crime mysteries.
An avid Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes fan, Bruce firmly believes the world can’t have enough whodunits. When not writing, he enjoys travel, classic whodunit, and a quiver full of children and grandchildren. Having lived in eighteen cities around the US and the world, he now makes his home in the Texas Hill Country with his wife of thirty-plus years.
Jen – Thanks to Bruce for being on my blog. Check out his series, I know you’ll love them!

Candy & Books – A Perfect Pairing for Your Sweet Tooth and Bookish Soul
The big question is: does candy = love?

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and with it comes a mix of romantic gestures, heartfelt cards, and of course, a generous amount of candy. Whether you’re celebrating with a special someone or just indulging yourself, there’s something undeniably comforting about pairing sugary treats with a good book.
My opinion: candy + a good book = love!
If you’re someone who loves a good mystery or a clean romance, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s dive into some Valentine’s Day candy and pair them with books that will satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you comfy from cover to cover.

Chocolate Truffles & Cozy MysteriesWhat’s better than sinking your teeth into a rich, velvety chocolate truffle? The answer: pairing it with a cozy mystery that’s just as indulgent. Truffles (my favorites are dark chocolate) are smooth, complex, and full of layers—much like the best cozy mysteries.
These stories often mix humor, quirky characters, and just enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat without the blood and gore that can sometimes accompany darker thrillers. For these delicious treats, I recommend the following books:
Amanda Flower is one of my favorite cozy authors, and she has multiple series – my favorite being the Magical Bookshop Mysteries . The premise – Rushing home to sit by her ailing grandmother’s bedside, Violet Waverly is shocked to find Grandma Daisy the picture of perfect health. Violet doesn’t need to read between the lines: her grandma wants Violet back home and working in her magical store, Charming Books. It’s where the perfect book tends to fly off the shelf and pick you! A yummy truffle is perfect while reading this cozy!Another favorite cozy mystery series is The Bibliophile Mysteries by Kate Carlisle. The premise – Brooklyn Wainwright, a rare book expert and bookbinder, finds herself investigating murders involving rare books and manuscripts. This series combines fascinating insights into the world of rare books with clever mysteries and is the perfect read as you enjoy truffles!Conversation Hearts & Romantic Mysteries
Photo by Jill Wellington on Pexels.comConversation hearts are a classic candy and one of my favorites. I love to see if the message is “Be Mine” or “XOXO.” While they may be small, they pack a punch of nostalgia and fun—just like romantic mysteries! These books combine the thrill of solving a crime with the irresistible pull of love and romance. For the candy that says so much in such a small package, try these:
Submerged by Dani Pettrey – Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey, Alaska, again. She has a past, and a reputation–and Yancey’s a town that doesn’t forget. She’s returned only to bury a loved one killed in a plane crash, but then dark evidence emerges, and Bailey’s own expertise becomes invaluable for the case. Cole McKenna can face dangerous rescue dives. He can face the fear a murderer may be threatening his town. But facing the reality of Bailey’s reappearance is a tougher challenge. She broke his heart…but doesn’t seem to be the same girl who left Yancey ten years ago. And he’s not the same guy she left behind. Life Flight by Lynette Eason – EMS helicopter pilot Penny Carlton is used to high-stress situations, but being forced to land on a mountain in a raging storm with a critical patient–and a serial killer on the loose–tests her skills and her nerve to the limit. She survives with FBI Special Agent Holt Satterfield’s help. But she’s not out of the woods yet. In the ensuing days, Penny finds herself under attack. And when news reaches Holt that he may not have gotten his man after all, it will take all he and Penny have to catch a killer–before he catches one of them. Dangerous Past by Roxanne Rustand – Michael is searching for a quiet life in a small town. Alone. When his elderly vagabond Aunt Bertie announces her plans for yet another summer in Europe, he agrees to stay at her home on the shore of Briar Lake. It’s perfect timing while he hunts for a house to buy and a location for his law practice. Perfect—until he meets a flamboyant stranger at Bertie’s front door who refuses to let him inside. A very nervous one, at that.
Gummy Bear Candy & Lighthearted RomanceFor those of us who prefer a candy that’s fruity, colorful, and fun, gummy bears are the treat of choice. They offer a burst of sweetness with a hint of chewy texture that never feels too overwhelming.
Gummy bears are all about lighthearted enjoyment, so for a similarly fun and breezy vibe, I say pair them with sweet, clean romance/rom-com novels. These books are full of charming characters and feel-good moments, with just enough plot twists to keep you turning the pages. Some good options are:
Cake That by Heather Greer – Competing on the Cake That baking show is a dream come true for Livvy Miller, but debt on her cupcake truck and an expensive repair make her question if it’s one she should chase. (I loved this one!!) The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh – Isadora Bentley follows the rules. Isadora Bentley likes things just so. Isadora Bentley believes that happiness is something that flat-out doesn’t exist in her life—and never will. But on her thirtieth birthday, Isadora does something completely out of character. The Ladies’ Room by Carolyn Brown – Secrets told in the church ladies’ room are supposed to stay in the ladies’ room. But that doesn’t mean that what Trudy overhears there during her great-aunt Gertrude’s funeral won’t change the rest of her life. Split Ends by Kristin Billerbeck – Sarah Claire Winowski is going to do whatever it takes to make a place for herself in the exclusive Beverly Hills salon. Even if that means sweeping hair, emptying trash and making soy lattes for the stars that come to Yoshi’s Salon.
