How to Serve Others as a Writer

At my first writing conference, I prayed about how to serve others with my writing. I knew I was to serve. But how?

As writers, we’re often focused on crafting stories, polishing sentences, and getting our work into the world. But writing isn’t just about producing content or publishing books—it can also be a beautiful way to serve others.

Words have power. They connect, encourage, challenge, and heal. And that means your writing can be an act of service—whether you’re published, aspiring, or somewhere in between.

Here are some meaningful ways you can serve others through your gift of writing:

1. Write to Encourage

Send a note, an email, or even a text message to someone who needs a lift. A few genuine words can make someone feel seen and valued. If you’re comfortable, write public encouragements on social media—shout out another writer, celebrate someone’s small win, or share a quote that helped you.

Concrete way to do this – many groups on FB call for author shoutouts. What a great way to celebrate another writer!

2. Another way to serve others: Offer to Beta Read or Edit

If you’ve developed your craft, you can support another writer by offering feedback on their work. It might not seem like much, but your thoughtful comments could be the push they need to keep going—or to finally submit that manuscript.

Concrete way to do this – join a critique group. Also, many FB groups have calls for beta readers.

3. Volunteer with Literacy Programs

Many local schools, libraries, and nonprofits are seeking volunteers to assist with literacy and creative writing programs. Reading to kids, mentoring a teen writer, or helping adults learn to read—that’s a powerful way to use your writing skills to serve.

Concrete way to do this – ask at your local library!

4. Create Free or Low-Cost Resources

Consider creating a writing prompt calendar, journaling guide, or mini-workshop and offering it for free (or “pay what you can”) to your community. These small acts can encourage new writers, teachers, or people looking to process life through words.

Concrete way to do this – ask in your FB group or on your page what people need. Lots of authors are using Substack to offer extra resources.

5. Support Causes with Your Writing

Use your platform to raise awareness for causes that matter to you. Write a blog post, craft a short story inspired by real-life events, or collaborate on a fundraiser anthology. Stories have the power to move people to action.

Concrete way to do this – just start! Pick something that matters to you and do it!

6. Tell Someone Else’s Story with Care

Sometimes the most generous thing we can do to serve others is to tell someone else’s story with empathy and respect. Whether you’re interviewing someone for a newsletter, ghostwriting, or documenting a piece of family history, it’s an act of service to help someone be heard.

Concrete way to do this – start with a family history.

7. Simply Share Your Words

Don’t underestimate the impact of showing up and sharing your voice. It’s truly a way to serve others. A blog post, poem, or essay written with honesty and heart can touch someone who needs it—right when they need it most. You may never know the ripple effect, but it’s real.

Concrete way to do this – I’ll say it again, just do it! It may take extra time or get you out of your comfort zone, but I encourage you to try!

Final Thoughts

Serving others as a writer doesn’t have to mean grand gestures or formal programs. It can be as simple as offering your time, your attention, or your words. Whether you’re writing for one person or many, your words matter—and using them to lift others is one of the most powerful things you can do.

You never know who needs what only you can say.

Meet author Luke Seibert

I met Luke Seibert through our Word Weavers critique group. We meet every month online, share portions of what we’ve written, and then use the “sandwich method” to critique. Luke’s critiques are always encouraging!

For anyone who doesn’t know what Word Weavers is, you can visit their website at word-weavers.com. I highly recommend becoming part of a critique group!

Let’s meet Luke!

Jen – It’s great to have you on my blog! Tell us a little about yourself.

Luke – I’ve lived in small towns pretty much all my life, both in Maryland and now in Alabama. I currently live in Ardmore, a city right on the state line with Tennessee—literally. The town straddles the state line. I was a carpenter for a few years, and I remodeled our house along with a friend and one of my brothers before we moved in.

I lost my sight in a car wreck about six months after we moved in, and that threw my plans for a loop. But the Lord stood with me and my family. Through a series of events, he brought the peace that he promised in Philippians 4:6-7. The Lord taught me so much through that season. I was already a Christian, but he gave me a deeper love for him and his Word. He increased my faith to believe that he was with me, no matter what dark trial I faced.

Since that time, he’s continued to direct me in a new path—pastoring. I preach at our church on Wednesday nights, and I just completed my Master’s of Divinity. Although the congregation is small, it’s been the right church for my family these past few years.

Music has also been a big part of my life, especially bluegrass and modern hymns (Keith and Kristen Getty, Sovereign Grace Music, CityAlight, etc.). Guitar’s my primary instrument, but I also play mandolin and upright bass. I love getting together to play with friends at local festivals or just jam around a campfire. There’s nothing like praising the Lord with music.

Books by Luke Seibert

Jen – After knowing you for a few years, I’ve come to realize how much you love music! Tell us about what you’ve written.

Luke – One genre I write is contemporary fiction, and I’ve written four books in this category. All of them are set in the south: either Alabama or Georgia. One is a middle-grade novel, “The Legend of Saint Creek,” and it’s about a mystery a few friends discover on a camping trip. My favorite, “Enough,” is a full-length novel that retells the story of the Prodigal Son in a modern setting. I try to delve into the problems of the heart that led to his leaving, as well as the struggles of the older sibling.

Enough by Luke Seibert

Jesse Barrett knows music is the key to his future. The only problem is, his dad doesn’t agree. Try as he might, he can’t satisfy them both. And with his overbearing sister, the pressure continues to grow.

Then Jesse meets a new group of friends who finally get him. Although they challenge his Christian faith, they’re the best musicians he’s ever played with. As he joins the band, he finds an outlet and a possible escape.

If Jesse could get his portion of the inheritance now, he’d be set to live out his dream.  With firm resolve, he crosses an irreversible line. His plan is simple: he’ll make music with the girl he loves, and nothing is going to hold him back. But what if he’s wrong? What if forces outside of his control dash his dreams to the dust? And if he loses everything, where can he turn? Find out in this modern-day telling of the prodigal son and discover whether God really does receive rebels home once again.

Other books by Luke Seibert

Jen – I’ve loved reading this as it’s gone through the critique stage. What else have you written?

Luke – “Never Saw It Coming” is a short memoir that tells the story of how I lost my sight and what God taught me in that first year of coping with blindness.

I also thoroughly enjoy writing historical fiction. I’ve written four books in this category as well. “The Chesson Valley Series” is a trilogy about the American Civil War, told from the perspective of a young man who is adamantly opposed to slavery but lives in northern Virginia. “Worth the Cost” is about a Jewish uprising in the 2nd Century BC. The characters struggle with how to hold fast to the Lord amidst changing times and an increasingly secular society.

And my current project is another historical fiction series: Britain to Berlin. This is a four-book series that gives a picture of WWII from the buildup to D-Day through the end of the war in the West. It primarily follows the American perspective, but it also switches to show some of the German point of view as well.

Folks can check out the books on my website: www.hisministries.com.

Luke’s bio:

Luke Seibert lives in north Alabama and serves as the associate pastor of Elkmont Baptist Church. Besides writing books and preaching, he enjoys spending time with family, woodworking, and playing bluegrass music.

Luke’s writing habits

Jen – I always love to ask authors about their writing habits. What works for you?

Luke – I typically write in the afternoon or evening, but I don’t have blocked out time on the schedule for that. I usually have a cup of coffee handy, and I always have music playing in the background. For some reason, having the music seems to help me write better. Perhaps that habit comes from my time as a carpenter (we kept the radio going non-stop while we worked).

That setup’s been pretty standard for me the past several years. What has changed, however, is my approach to writing. When I started, I was strictly a pantser. I had an idea for a book, and the story just developed as I wrote. I would jot down some scenes here or there, but nothing like a clear outline. That really changed with my last novel, “Enough.” I had started to write the book in the beginning of 2023, but took a break for several months. The story wasn’t going the way I wanted, and I was distracted by other parts of life. When I came back to it that Fall, I felt the Lord show me what the rest of the story should look like, and I plotted it out.

I’m now a mix of plotting and pantsing. I come up with a general outline first. It varies on how specific it gets, but it’s never down to the chapter level. I also jot down ideas for specific scenes I know I want to happen. I do this for each of the main points of view of the book. Then I fill in gaps and change the outline as needed as I write. This gives me structure and road marks to shoot for along the way, but still gives me freedom during the writing process.

Jen – I’m a mix of plotter and pantser, but I definitely lean toward pantser. I’m glad you’ve found a system that works!

Research for Luke’s books

Jen –Did you have to do research for your stories? If so, what did you find most interesting?

Luke – I’ve had to do research for most books that I’ve written, but the level depends on the type of story. For example, my modern-day telling of the prodigal son didn’t take a whole lot of research. The main character’s passion is bluegrass music…so yeah, I was already in that world. I did, however, have to research drugs and drug rehabilitation for part of that story.

On the other hand, my series about WWII has required pretty intense study. Originally, I planned to write about paratroopers during D-Day. But as I began to study, the entire trajectory changed. The series now centers on the infantry, and the saga begins almost a year before the D-Day invasion. And even with that new direction, the storyline has changed several times (for both the Americans and the Germans) as I’ve continued to study and delve deeper into the history.

One neat example I came across in my research was how pigeons were used in the war to pass information from France back to England. The allies would drop pigeons in small crates by parachute at night. Then any citizen brave enough to defy the Germans would write messages, attach them to the birds, and send them back across the Channel. A lot of the birds didn’t make it through, but some information was incredibly helpful. I didn’t know anything about that operation until recently, and it has provided a sub-plot for the first book in the series.

Jen – That’s fascinating! I love reading your WWII story in our critique group.

Goals for Luke and his writing

Jen – As writers, especially Christian writers, we have goals for what we’re writing and trying to share. Tell us about yours.

Luke – My goal is to write stories that point to Christ in an excellent way, both in terms of content and as well as craft. One of my guiding verses is Philippians 1:10, where Paul prays that believers “may approve what is excellent” (ESV). In the Christian subculture, it can feel like we sometimes settle for less skillful art just as long as it has a Christian message. And if that’s all a person cares about, that’s fine. But I believe that excellence also includes the aspect of craft or skill. Unfortunately, so many skillfully written books contain explicit scenes and a plethora of R-rated language. My goal is to pair excellent content with excellent craft. I’ve read some books that have done this in a beautiful way, and they’ve inspired me both to write and grow as an author.

Jen – Yes! I totally agree. 🙂

Reading time

Jen – What do you like to read?

Luke –Hands down, my favorite novel is “The Visitation” by Frank Peretti. I don’t write in that genre, but I identify so much with his main character, and the story stirs my love for the pure gospel every time I read it (at least five times over the years). His books “Oath” and “Monster” also rank high on my list. I have also really enjoyed some older books like “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “A Tale of Two Cities.”

Although I love fiction, I find myself mostly reading non-fiction these days. I’m especially drawn to anything about the local church, such as “The Compelling Community” by Mark Dever. I also love books on practical theology like “Delighting in the Trinity” by Michael Reeves or “The Hole in our Holiness” by Kevin DeYoung. These books have greatly helped me not only understand the Lord better, but also see how that knowledge should play out in my daily life.

How to find Luke

Jen – Where can we find you online?

Luke – I’m mostly on Facebook right now, but I am starting a monthly newsletter to share about the books I’m writing and reading. Folks can sign up at my website: https://www.hisministries.com/?page_id=398

My podcast is called “Take Your Stand,” and I’ve gone a few directions with it over the years. I’m starting it up again, and the focus has clarified. I’ll cover a variety of topics, but they all connect with thinking through the implications of the gospel. The gospel itself is simple, but it radically shapes every aspect of our lives. So I explore theology, the local church, books, scripture, and cultural issues, but all with this goal: what impact does the gospel make in my life today?

Jen – That’s exciting. I’ll have to check that out!

Luke Seibert and fun facts

Jen – Share some fun facts your readers would love to know!

Luke – I am very much a coffee drinker. I typically take it black, but I do enjoy a good hot mocha from a local coffee shop in town.

I still do a little carpentry work. I have an adaptive measuring tool and a small shop here on the property, so I still work on projects like the occasional bookcase.

I love dogs—but big dogs. Not too hip on Dachshunds or Chihuahuas (sorry, small dog owners).

I’ve never cared that much about clothes, but I’m a sucker for ball caps. I’ve got a bunch, and sometimes it’s hard to pick which one to choose.

More about being an author and writing

Jen – What is your advice for new authors?

Luke – I would encourage new authors to pray for a writing ‘reason’ that they could hold on to. Maybe it’s a particular message, or maybe it’s a specific type of book. Having a reason is what motivates me to write. For my Prodigal Son story, there were a few specific messages I couldn’t shake and I felt I had to share. With my WWII series, I’m writing to provide a clean set of books in that genre for young men. The reason can vary from book to book. But if you have a reason to hold on to, it helps guide the storyline and gives you a reason to press on even when you feel like giving up.

Jen – What inspired you to start writing?

Luke – I hated writing growing up, but I also loved stories (either reading them or making home movies). Then when I lost my sight and I had a lot of time on my hands before going back to school, I started to write just for something to do. I didn’t set out to write a book, but as the story grew, that’s what it turned into.

Also, I was frustrated with several books I had started recently and none had turned out good. I figured that if I couldn’t find a story that captured my attention and still honored the Lord, I should write one. That thought, combined with writing to fill time, is what led to my first book, and I haven’t stopped since.

Jen – Thanks so much for being on my blog, Luke! It was great getting to know you better!

Meet author Teresa Wells

Author Teresa Wells is a fellow Scrivenings Press writer! I’m thrilled to have her on the blog today, sharing her new release, What Brings Us Joy, which came out in July!

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Getting to know Teresa Wells

Jen – Hi, Teresa! Tell us a little about yourself.

Teresa – I grew up in Denton, Texas, which is north of Dallas and Fort Worth. I lived there all my life, until I married. We didn’t move far, though—only to the Dallas area. My husband and I met at college, and within a few years of marrying, we had our first child, a girl named Kristen. When she was six months old, she was diagnosed with a genetic disease that caused seizures, noncancerous tumors, and significant intellectual delay, as well as behavior issues. We didn’t know what the future held for her or for our family (which included two other daughters after Kristen). It was scary and overwhelming. We had to dig deep into our faith in Jesus. She’s 40 now, and it’s often been a hard road, but the Lord has been faithful to us.

Jen – What inspired you to start writing?

Teresa – I’ve written stories since I was a girl. I kept it up as an adult, but only after I retired from education did I attempt to publish. So many times I almost gave up. But when I heard, within my spirit, the Lord telling me to write for His glory, my motivation became to fulfill His will for my life. I feel that fiction communicates God’s love in a unique way, and I’m honored to use my talent for His glory.

Teresa’s books

Jen – I can see how that would cause you to dig deep into your faith. I’d love to hear more about what you have written.

Teresa – I write Christian historical romance, and my debut novel, What Brings Us Joy, was released in July of 2025. It’s the first in a series of three, so I’m working on the second novel now. You can find my book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/author/teresa-wells.

All the writing things

Jen –. One of my favorite things to ask other writers is about their schedule, if they plot, and how they come up with their stories!

Teresa – I like to write in the morning, but late at night also works well. Basically, any time the house is quiet!

I like plotting my story. I feel there’s still a certain amount of discovery within the framework of a fully plotted story.

My ideas for stories come mostly from my family tree! I love genealogy because there are countless situations and stories lurking behind every name on a family tree. Just one tidbit can set my imagination running!

What Brings Us Joy by Teresa Wells

In 1895, eighteen-year-old Delia Truitt’s world is shattered when circumstances force her family to leave their comfortable life in Georgia and relocate to a ramshackle Texas farm. Determined to help her parents dig out of their impoverished state, she plans to open a dressmaker’s shop—if she can win the county fair quilt contest and fund her business with the prize money. Delia sets her sights on success—until her heart takes an unexpected detour when she meets handsome Clarence Parker.

Determined to uphold his reputation, Clarence refuses to let his troubled past overshadow his pursuit of happiness, especially when he falls for the spirited and fearless Delia Truitt. His hopes are soon shattered when headlines reveal that his former gang members have escaped prison and are headed his way, driven by a ruthless desire for revenge. Though Clarence has no regrets about testifying against the outlaws, he fears his future with Delia is at risk. To protect her from the lurking danger, he’s willing to risk everything—his safety, his reputation, and their happiness.

Can Clarence keep her safe from the killers? And will Delia still love him once she learns the truth about his past?

Research for her books

Jen – I’ve tried plotting, and I’m still a die-hard pantser! 😉 What kind of research did you do for your story? What did you find most interesting?

Teresa – I had a lot of research to do, since my story is set in 1895. The most interesting was when I found out that crazy quilts were quite controversial! I wrote about it in a guest post on Inspired by Life and Fiction blog here: https://inspiredbylifeandfiction.com/guest-post-teresa-wells.

Teresa’s goals

Jen – That’s really interesting! What are your goals for your writing?

Teresa – I write for two reasons: 1) I like to create stories, and 2) writing fictional stories for publication is my spiritual form of worship. I feel like I’m using my God-given talent for His kingdom. Knowing this helps me to keep going when I get discouraged or overwhelmed. I pray He uses my stories for His purposes.

What she reads

Jen – What do you like to read?

Teresa – I read more fiction than nonfiction. It’s not that I don’t find nonfiction useful, but I tend to read in small chunks. When I’m researching, I love to read primary sources like newspapers, diaries, or memoirs to get a feel for societal expectations and cultural norms.

But fiction is just fun reading. With fiction, it’s easy to immerse myself in another time and place. Fiction teaches us so much about relationships.

Some of my favorite books are This Promised Land, by Cathy Gohlke; Under the Tulip Tree, by Michelle Shocklee; Almost Home, by Valerie Fraser Luesse; The Fog Harbor series by Nicole Deese; The Edge of Belonging, by Amanda Cox; Catching Christmas, by Terri Blackstock; and the Timeless series by Gabrielle Meyer.

Jen – Tell us how to keep in touch with you!

Teresa – I love interacting with other writers and readers on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/teresawellswriter and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/teresagreenwells_writer as well as my website, www.teresawells.com.

But the real treat is when I hear from my newsletter subscribers! Subscribers get the inside scoop on my writing, plus recipes, bookish giveaways, and more! https://bit.ly/twellsnewsletter

Fun facts!

Jen – I love to ask authors to share some fun facts readers would love to know: Tea or coffee? Favorite season? Favorite Bible verse? What do you do in your free time? Cat or dog person?

Teresa – I love coffee, especially in the early morning and right after lunch. But tea is always good in between!

My favorite season is anything not winter! Good thing I live where it’s hot!

My favorite Bible verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9, because it reminds me that when I’m weak, He is my strength.

In my spare time, I like to cross-stitch or make charmed bookmarks to match the themes of my books. I also love to play games like Chicken Foot, where there’s a bit of strategy to winning, but not so much that it sucks all the fun out of the game!

I’m a dog person, even though we don’t have one now. Granddogs make great substitutes!

One last question:

Jen – What is your advice for new authors?

Teresa – Spend ample time learning how to write fiction, along with the rules of publishing. I think paying for classes is a worthy investment if you want to publish. I have learned so much from Susan May Warren’s My Book Therapy (also known as Novel Academy).

Jen – Thanks so much for joining me today!

Bookish Things That Every Reader Will Love

There’s nothing like being a reader. The scent of old books, the excitement of a plot twist, the emotional connection to characters who feel like friends — it’s an experience that goes far beyond the pages. But for many of us, being a book lover isn’t just about reading. It’s a lifestyle.

Enter bookish things — those delightful, literary-themed items that let you wear your reader’s heart on your sleeve (sometimes literally). Whether it’s a coffee mug for your reading nook, a clever t-shirt with a literary pun, or a sticker that declares your love for fantasy epics, these little treasures add charm, personality, and fun to your reading life.

Let’s dive into some must-have bookish things that every book lover should check out:

☕Coffee Mugs: Fuel for Fiction – a favorite bookish thing

Ask any bookworm what goes hand-in-hand with a good book, and chances are they’ll say: a hot beverage. Coffee, tea, cocoa — it doesn’t matter, as long as it’s in a mug that speaks their language.

Bookish mugs often feature:

Quotes from favorite novels or authors.Witty puns like “Espresso Patronum” or “Read past your bedtime.”Artwork inspired by classic literature or fantasy worlds.Minimalist designs with titles of banned books, book stacks, or cozy reading scenes.

A sturdy, oversized mug is the perfect companion for long reading sessions, especially on rainy days.

Earrings: Subtle Literary Statements💎

If you love accessorizing, bookish earrings are a playful way to show off your passion for reading. These aren’t just your average jewelry pieces — they’re tiny literary works of art.

Popular styles include:

Mini book earrings: Teeny-tiny versions of famous book covers.Quote earrings: Featuring short, punchy lines from beloved stories.Character-inspired designs: Think lightning bolts (hello, Harry Potter), hobbit doors, or raven feathers.Vintage typewriter keys or book page snippets: Romantic and nostalgic.

They make great conversation starters, especially at book club meetings or literary festivals.

👕T-Shirts: Wear Your Love Loud

Some crowd favorites:

Graphic tees : With illustrations of bookshelves, readers under blankets, or iconic characters.Quote shirts: Featuring lines from Jane Austen, Shakespeare, or modern YA novels.Punny shirts: “Plot twist,” “Bookish and proud,” “Talk wordy to me,” etc. Genre-specific tees : Mystery, romance, fantasy, sci-fi — rep your favorite genre proudly.

Keychains: A Pocket-Sized Passion🗝

Keychains might be small, but they pack a punch of personality — especially when they’re book-themed.

Options include:

Mini replicas of famous novels.Wooden or acrylic tags with quotes.Character silhouettes or symbols (like Mockingjay pins or Sorting House crests).Custom keychains with your name and favorite book title.

Attach one to your keys, backpack, or purse and carry a little piece of your bookish world with you everywhere.

📒Journals: A Writer’s Playground

Most readers are also scribblers. Whether it’s jotting down favorite quotes, drafting your own stories, or keeping a reading log, journals are a bookish must-have.

Look for:

Reading journals : Structured pages for reviews, star ratings, favorite characters, and TBR lists.Blank notebooks: For free-flow journaling, note-taking, or doodling while reading.Leather-bound journals: Elegant and timeless, perfect for those who like a classic touch. Prompt-based journals : With literary-themed questions, genre-specific prompts, or writing inspiration.

Bonus points if the journal is paired with a fancy pen (more on that next).

Bookish Things – Pens: Because Book Lovers Often Love to Write🖊

A pen is more than a writing tool for book lovers — it’s a wand of creativity.

Ideal bookish pens might feature:

Literary quotes engraved or printed on the side. Novelty pen tops (like feather quills, cats reading books, or vintage typewriters).Fountain pens for those who enjoy the tactile beauty of handwriting.Coordinated pen sets that match your journal or reading aesthetic. Funky pens for fun!

For the writer-reader hybrid, a good pen is essential, whether they’re writing poetry or simply annotating favorite passages.

🗒Stickers: Small, But Mighty

Bookish stickers are a low-cost way to personalize your space, gear, or planner. They’re colorful, fun, and full of bookish attitude.

You’ll find stickers that:

Feature quotes or book covers.Highlight reading habits like “Introvert: Currently Reading” or “Books are my love language.”Show genre loyalty (“Team Fantasy”, “Romance Reader Forever”).Are designed as characters, shelves, or fandom tributes.

Stick them on:

LaptopsWater bottlesNotebooksKindle coversPhone cases

One is never enough — it’s easy to start a sticker obsession once you start collecting.

Why Bookish Things Matter

At first glance, bookish merch might seem like “just stuff,” but it goes deeper. These items are expressions of identity. They remind us that reading is more than a hobby — it’s a lifestyle, a comfort, and a community.

Bookish things can:

Bring comfort and joy to your reading routine.Connect you with fellow readers who “get it.”Support small creators and indie businesses who craft these items with love.Make reading feel more immersive and fun.Spark inspiration and creativity.

Plus, they make the best gifts for your fellow bookworms!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re new to the reading life or you’ve been devouring books since childhood, surrounding yourself with bookish things can make the experience even more magical. From bookmarks and mugs to t-shirts and stickers, every little item tells a story — and adds a bit of yours to the narrative.

So go ahead, build your cozy reading corner, sip from that nerdy mug, and wear your bookish earrings with pride. After all, you’re not just a reader. You’re part of a world filled with stories — and that’s worth celebrating.

I recommend searching Amazon, Etsy, and Redbubble for all of your bookish needs!

Waitin’ on Paige by Mary Pat Johns

As my granddaughter would say, it’s been a hot minute since Mary Pat Johns has been on the blog! This time, she is telling us about Waitin’ On Paige, her newest book. Let’s see what it’s all about!

Mary Pat and her new book, Waitin’ on Paige!

Jen – Hi Mary Pat! It’s good to have you back on the blog. Tell us about your new book!

Mary PatWaitin’ On Paige is the last book of my Romance in Valiant series, though it can be read as a standalone. I love Tavo and Paige’s story. They’ve loved each other since high school, but life has happened to both of them. Finding their way back to each other is quite the rollercoaster ride.

Questions!

Jen – There are several things I love to ask authors. One is, where do you get your ideas? I also like to know if you outline and/or do a rough draft?

Mary Pat – Usually, a tiny thread will come from my life experiences. I’ll pull on that thread to see where it goes, and a story is born.

I try to outline the main plot points. Sometimes, it’s a single scene. Other times, it’s a simple idea of what could happen. My first draft is my rough draft, and it’s quite daunting. I’m always relieved when it’s done, and I can start fixing the problems.

Waitin’ on Paige

All he wants is to reclaim her love…

Tavo Morales has returned to Valiant, Texas, to stir the embers of a relationship with the woman he has never stopped loving, but hidden reefs from his past threaten to destroy his future.

Paige Munoz wants her new event planning business to be a success and won’t let anything stand in her way. But the path she’s on to make her dreams come true proves dangerous.

Is the love Tavo and Paige once shared strong enough to survive their secrets?

More about Mary Pat & writing

Jen – What’s the hardest part for you about writing a book?

Mary Pat – Getting the story momentum right is always a challenge, because I rarely know how a story begins. I’ll work through several scenes before it comes together. Even with all that, I’ve learned to endure a mediocre opening just to get the ball rolling. I tweak it once the story is finished.

Jen – What themes do you like to use in your books?

Mary Pat – Second chances happen often in my work. And there’s always some sort of physical rescue to underscore the faith message that Christ rescued us from certain death.

Mary Pat’s writing career

Jen – How do you deal with criticism or rejection?

Mary Pat – Once, I received a five-star review from someone who said she was hard-pressed to call my book Christian fiction. Ouch! But I chose to learn from it. Now I’m bolder about the faith message I want to share, hopefully without being preachy.

Jen – Constructive criticism is helpful! What are you working on next?

Mary Pat – I’m currently revising/editing a Christmas novella for a collection that will release in 2026. The working title for my next series is Gulf Coast Divers. I’m stepping into the genre of romantic suspense with this series, so it’s another learning curve and a lot of research, but I’m looking forward to it.

Jen – What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Mary Pat – I like to spend time in the kitchen, with family, and with my friends. And, of course, READ. An intriguing new story tops my favorites list.

Jen – Thanks for being on the blog and sharing about Waitin’ on Paige!

Branding with Shannon Leach

Brands are everywhere we look. Some branding is perfect for the item – car, website, author – but sometimes you see a brand that makes you go, wait a minute!

I met Shannon a couple of years ago at the Mid-South Christian Writing Conference. We clicked and became fast friends. I asked her about branding my website/social media, and her insight and help made a huge difference. She’s on the blog to talk about all things branding.

Blog post covers I made before my branding: (you can see I needed help!)

What is a cozy mystery

What is branding?

Shannon – Most professionals define branding as the unique identity and recognizable design elements that tell your audience who you are. These elements can include your logos, colors, fonts, taglines, and even book covers. Because it is your introduction to the reader, presenting information about you before you ever say/write a word, the choices can be crucial. It is literally your first conversation with them. What you say in that moment may determine whether or not they continue the conversation.

Why did you start branding as a business?

Shannon –After I launched my writing career, I began to shift my focus to think of my work not just as a job, but as a ministry. I knew that in order to reach the hearts I wanted to help, one of the crucial tools was a website. So, I taught myself how to do websites. During that time, I discovered the importance of the style choices and the benefits of consistency. Focused branding was one of the best ways to capture consistency for my message.

As I talked with other writers, I discovered the creative design that came naturally to me was not everyone’s favorite task. Knowing the importance and benefits of branding on our ministries as faith-based writers, I started helping other authors find the message unique to them.

My blog post covers and my amazing header after my branding!

Why should an author brand?

Shannon –So the lights don’t flicker. Have you ever watched an in-person play or sermon and become deeply focused on the story? What happens if the lights suddenly flicker or blink? It pulls you out of the moment like a runaway bride who broke eye contact. Sometimes you will return to that deep connection, sometimes you won’t. A missing or poorly done brand is the equivalent of the lights flickering. It creates a distraction that pulls the reader away from the message you are trying to gift to them.

Because it is your introduction to the reader, presenting information about you before you ever say/write a word, the choices can be crucial. ~ Shannon Leach

Timing is everything – when should authors brand?

Shannon –The earlier you can brand, the better. You are not just selling a book. You are inviting them into the story of you. That story exists before you ever publish a thing. Don’t rush into a brand based on cool trends alone, because having to change it later can cause more harm than good. But also don’t dawdle or dismiss its importance.

How do you decide on a person’s brand?

Shannon –The wonderful thing about the way I do brand development is that I do not have to decide what the brand will be. It is already there, waiting for discovery. The story of who they are, what they cherish as important, what they are passionate about, and what lights them up creatively will decide the brand.

I use a detailed and personal interview and assessment process to determine their mission first. Identifying their why produces an individualized brand meant just for them. I call it mission-minded branding, and it keeps the focus on the purpose versus trying to keep up with the ever-changing platforms and progress of their work.

This creates a long-term brand that doesn’t change just because the work in progress did. It is about who they are and the message they have been given to tell. That message is what the audience will connect with emotionally.

This is an especially successful process for authors who write across genres, granting them opportunities and permissions to go where God calls them to go without worry of negative impacts on their brand. It offers a personal invitation to get to know the author and their passions and connect one-on-one from a distance. Readers often stick to books by authors they know, even if the genre changes. And the brand is one way they can know the author well.

Why is branding exciting to you?

Shannon –The opportunity to create an instant bridge between someone with a message and someone who needs that message. The right brand presented to the right audience can offer comfort, connection, and even the sense that they are known and heard. It is like an unspoken promise between them with the potential to usher words of hope straight to the hearts that need it without distraction. Now that is mission, making sure the message we have been given to tell gets through without delay or interruption. Branding done well can do that for an author before the reader ever reads a word.

Ways to get in touch with Shannon

Shannon – I offer many services for writers, creatives, and other faith-based ministries and organizations, all with the mission of helping them get their creations of light out to the world. This includes one-on-one creativity coaching, tech training, brand development, and even nonprofit consulting.

Connect with me through my website at https://arhinspirations.com.

In addition to these services, I will soon be launching a private community of support for creatives and leaders called “The Sunlight Scribes.” This community will offer personal encouragement with a deep biblical focus on our mission and the barriers that often impact the “lonely roles” of the creative and ministry life. They can sign up for my newsletter “Words and Light” to make sure they are notified when it launches.

What is one piece of advice you’d give an author or creative?

Shannon –The best way to discover your brand is to trust that what God says is true, which includes embracing the unique gifts and stories He has given you to tell in a way only you can tell it. Start believing in that, and you will have no trouble finding your mission-minded brand.
