Home tuition, anyone?

Do you remember your schooling time? I could still remember mine. My father is pretty strict when it comes to academic achievements, and being an average student who don’t exactly excel in academic subjects much in exception of my favourite subjects, I struggled to do well in school.

Trust me, without my father coaxing, coercing and guiding me for hours every day, I wouldn’t even touch those horrifying homework. Without my father sitting with me to revise for exams, I won’t even study.

Back then, home tuition was not exactly an alternative to parental homework guidance. It was very stressful for my father to encourage and guide me as he’s not exactly good in everything.

Kids these days are lucky. They live in an era where tuition centres sprouts like mushrooms after the rain.

You can even see the ads for home tuition services being advertised everywhere, including on the back a taxi.

See what I mean? Yes, parents and kids these days are very lucky to have tuition services and whatnot to assist with academic workload. Back in my time, home tuition is something almost unheard of. There’s plenty of tuition centres in the vicinity of my home, but home tuition is really something unheard of. By hook or by crook, students who wants to have tuition will have to study in groups, and never on one to one basis. It’s not really effective, I must say.

But kids these days have the benefit of hooking up with home tutors. There’s plenty of home tuition service out there these days. looking for a good tutor can be rather tricky, but fret not…

Just look up this home tuition website, and you’ll discover that there’s plenty of professional home tutors out there.

The websites have a clean and simple outlook and you’ll find easy navigation with the search function in it. Just search what sort of tutors of what subjects you require, and the website will match it up for you.

This website is not just for parents and students who are looking for home tutors, I assure you. It’s also for home tutors who wants to offer their service. So, if you’re a parent, a student, or a tutor, you might want to check this site up. And check out this video about them too.

Cleffairy: Looking back, all I need was a little bit of encouragement and guidance to do well in school.

The Power of Interactive Play Parenting Workshop

I pity kids these days. Their lives are packed with schedules. Sometimes, seeing the trend and the education system, I feel that the children were not given a chance to enjoy their childhood. They’re not only made to do homeworks at the tender age of 3 during their pre-school years, but they also spend more time in front of the idiot box than playing too.

Playing is the most natural thing to do for any individual, but what you may not know is that there’s so much more to it than just having fun.

But in recent years, the amount of parents who have started to use technology as a substitute to spending actual quality time with their children is increasing at an alarming rate. Many disregard the importance of interaction or play with their children.

Playing is the best means in helping children with brain development and learning. When children can actively manipulate and explore toys in their environment, they learn best. Adults playing together with children will enhance the relationship between the parent/adult and child which is pivotal in a child’s development.

Fisher-Price, a firm believer in the development of children through play and bonding notices this trend.Through The Power of “Interactive” Play Workshop, Fisher-Price will be sharing the benefits of play through the five development stages (Sensory Stimulation, Sitting & Reaching, Speech Development, On the Go and Walker & Rider) and to further encourage adults to spend more time with children.

The Power of “Interactive” Play Parenting Workshop will exhibit the different kinds of activities and exercises that adults can have with children. It will further elaborate on the different tools that can be used to further assist with the different development stages of children.

Baked Seafood Casserole recipe

Here’s sharing another recipe that I learned during the workshop with Chef Wan last week.

image

The second recipe was Baked Seafood Casserole with Simplot Hashbrowns.

image

It’s a pretty straight forward recipe, actually.

image

Here’s how the casserole looks like after being baked in the oven for 45 mins.image

Looks good, isn’t it?

image

Well, it tasted really good. I had two helpings of this, in fact, and here’s sharing the recipe with all of you so that you can bake this for your loved ones too:

Ingredients:

150 grams of butter

1 large red onion, diced

4 garlic cloves, chopped

2 stalks of Chinese celery, sliced

6 tablespoon of flour

6 cups of fresh milk, heated

1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg power

1/2 teaspoon of clove powder

1 cup parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped

1kg of seafood (it can be crab meat, fresh prawns meat, squid, snapper fillet, mussels)

3 large tomatoes, sliced and lightly sauteed in olive oil

1 cup sliced soft Swiss cheese

1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese

2 packets of Simplot Hashbrowns

Salt and pepper to taste

Here’s how you assemble the casserole:

1. Melt butter and sautee onions, garlic, Chinese celery and leek until soften.

2. Add flour and cook for 2 mins to make roux.

3. Then stir in milk, nutmeg, clove, parsley, thyme and seafood. Add in salt and pepper to taste and remove the sauce from the stove once thickens.

4. Mash up the fried hashbrowns and flatten as a base in a casserole dish.

5. Add in sliced tomatoes and seafood mix.

6. Top with parmesan, Swiss cheese and remaining hashbrowns. Sprinkle with more butter and cheese.

7. Cover the casserole dish and bake at 180 degress for 30 mins.

8. Before serving, remove alluminium foil and bake for another 10 mins til golden brown.

Happy trying, ladies and gentleman. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Cleffairy: Next post will be the recipe for Greek Moussaka.

GONE- A thrilling and suspenseful treat

Remember Amanda Seyfried? You know, the girl who was boosted to fame with ‘Mamma Mia’ the movie as well as ‘Letters to Juliet’ a few years back? Well, this time around, Amanda Seyfield is no longer playing the innocent, naive girl who is smitten with her boyfriend and can’t wait to be married.

In the movie ‘GONE’, she played a role of a determined young woman known as Jill. When her sister disappeared, Jill is convinced that the serial killer who kidnapped her two years ago has returned, and she sets out to once again face her abductor.

Jill was forced to face her greatest fear in order to get her sister back. In this movie, she faced a lot of hurdle and challenges, including which she was accused of being a paranoid and delusional when she told the authorities that her sister has been abducted.

While I was annoyed that Jill was placed in predicament where she’s all alone and gets no help from anybody in the movie, I have to say that it’s quite refreshing to see Amanda Seyfried playing a rather heroic and courageous role instead of playing a sweet-natured, hopelessly romantic young woman in dilemma.

Below is the trailer for ‘GONE’. Watch it and you’ll know what I mean.

‘GONE’ is rated PG-13 for violence and will be shown in Malaysian cinema nationwide on 10 May 2012. If you’re into a crime thriller, this movie will be perfect for you.

Cleffairy: Movie date, anyone?

Minestrone Beefball Soup with Simplot Hashbrown Popcorns

The first recipe during the workshop with Chef Wan was Minestrone Beefball Soup with Simplot Popcorn Hashbrown. Minestrone is a word originating from Italy and is literally translated as ‘big soup’. Minestrone soup is a thick soup of Italian origin made with vegetables, often with the addition of pasta or rice. Common ingredients include beans, onions, celery, carrots, stock, and tomatoes.

image

Here’s Chef Wan, preparing the his version of Minestrone soup.

image

And here’s the handmade beefballs, to be added into the soup.

image

This is how the final product of the minestrone soup…

image

We were given the opportunity to have taste of it during the workshop, and it was really marvellous, and so, here’s sharing the recipe with all of you out there. perhaps you can try it out yourself at home. You’d love it, I assure you.

Ingredients for Minestrone soup:

1/4cup of olive oil

1 large red onion, diced

6 garlic cloves, chopped

1 zucchini, diced

1 tin of baked beans, tossed

1 cube chicken stock bullion

1 red and green chilli each, diced

1 Italian tomato, crushed

4 tablespoon of Leggo’s Tomato Puree

1 bunch of parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon of dried oregano

6 thyme leaves, chopped

2 bay leaves

2 slices of white bread, soaked in milk then tossed

Sugar, salt and coarse black pepper to taste

Ingredients for beefballs:

Minched meat bread balls

300 grams of minched meat

Salt and pepper to taste

20 Simplot Popcorn Hashbrown, fried

Here’s how you make Minestrone Beefball Soup with Simplot Popcorn Hashbrowns:

Firstly, heat olive oil in the pan. Then sautee the onion and garlic til fragrant.
Add in zucchini, carrot, baked beans, chicken stock, chilli, tomato and herbs. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes to soften the vegetables and proceed to work on the beefballs.
To prepare minched meat bread balls, combine minced meat, salt, pepper and white bread soaked in milk. Mix well and roll into balls. Fry it til golden brown and put in minched meat bread balls into the soup.
Add in salt, sugar and coarse black pepper to taste and leave to simmer for 2 hours.
After two hours, serve the soup with Simplot Popcorn Hashbrowns on top.

Preparation time: 20 mins

Cooking time: 2 hours

Yield: 4-6 servings

Minestrone soup is a very good way to get your picky little ones to take veggies, don’t you think? I certainly think so. My boys loved this soup, and I think your loved ones will like this too.

Cleffairy: Up in the next post is Baked seafood casserole with Simplot Hashbrown recipe. Stay tune for more.

My simply delicious date with Chef Wan

I had a date with Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, or more commonly known simply as Chef Wan while the rest of Malaysia was busy donning yellow clothes on 28th April 2012.

It was an honour to be invited to attend the Simply Good Meal Workshop hosted by Simplot and BBC Good Food & Travel Magazine I grew up watching Chef Wan cook. One of his first few cooking show that I’ve watched before is ‘Nestle Cornflakes’, ‘Chef Wan in Europe’, and many more.

Never in my life I thought I’d be meeting the inspiring and cheeky Chef Wan in person, what more attending a workshop that’s taught by him personally. Special thanks to Sidney Kan of BigBoysOven for extending the invite to me. It’s most appreciated, and I had a lot of fun learning that day.

image

Anyway, the workshop was held at BSH Home Appliances, Bosch brand new showroom in Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

image

There’s plenty of luxurious cooking appliances in the showroom.

The workshop was attended by 30 lucky readers of BBC Good Food, media as well as invited food bloggers. The aim of the workshop is to encourage creativity while cooking Simplot products.

image

Simplot is an international food products producer. Among the moe chain of Simplot products are various frozen potatoes like hash browns and popcorn hashbrowns, frozen vegetable, sauces and tomato paste as well as canned food. Simplot is the inventor of frozen potatoes since 1940. The frozen hashbrown and popcorn hashbrown are made from premium potatoes, with no cholesterol, no artifical flavours, no added preservatives and no artificial colourings.

image

Some of the products that will be a part of the ingredients during the workshop. Leggo’s sauce.

image

Raw vegetables for the cooking demonstration.

image

Chef Wan only use the best ingredients for his cooking, and that includes fresh seafood.

image

And then there’s herbs like basil and rosemary that Chef Wan can never go without in his cookings.

Chef Wan told us he’ll be demonstrating how to cook 4 dishes by using Simplot products. They are:

Minestrone beefball soup with Simplot Popcorn Hashbrown
Baked seafood casserole with Simplot Hashbrown
Greek Massouka
Simplot Hashbrown potato and shrimp pancake

image

Here’s Chef Wan, demonstrating to us how to fry hashbrowns properly.

image

Golden fried hashbrown, to be used in those recipes…

image

Chef Wan, cooking the first dish in the recipe, minestrone beefball soup with Simplot Popcorn Hashbrown.

image

Here’s the soup, sizzling on the stove. Looks pretty yummy, isn’t it? While the soup were sizzling on the stove, we were taught how to make our own beefballs from scratch.

image

One of the participants were asked to help him out in making beefballs…

image

And were taught how to fry the beefballs properly, without getting them out of shape or overcooking them, and while the soup were cooking, he assembled a casserole.

image

Looks good, isn’t it? Well, the final products looks even more irresistible. Just wait for the next post, I’ll be showing all the final products and share the recipe with all of you.

image

Greek Massouka

image

And last but not least, Simplot Hashbrown potato and shrimp pancake.

To say that the food was delicious was an understatement. The food was fabulous, sensational and divine.

Cleffairy: I’ll be sharing all 4 recipe that I’ve learned during the workshop with Chef Wan with all of you here in the next posts, so stay tune for more, ya?

Brush of Angel’s Wings

I feel very depressed and hopeless lately. Nothing seems to go on right, and at times, I feel as if the world is against me and I feel as if I couldn’t trust anyone at all. This book, Brush of Angel’s Wings by Ruth Reid somehow reminded me that God is always there for me, even though I tend to forget Him at times. I forgot that when bad things happened, God is actually nudging me, to remind me that He is always there for me, and all I need is to look him up again so that things would be better. This book is inspirational. I could relate to it and I highly recommends it to those who feel that their life is going out of control.

I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of this book from Thomas Nelson Publisher. I was not compensated in any ways for reviewing this.

Book description:

Rachel and Jordan’s feelings for each other are hostile at first, but angelic intervention helps the two discover peace . . . and perhaps love.

The youngest and last unmarried of four sisters, Rachel Hartlzer spends most of her time helping with barn chores. Her role abruptly changes when her father hires Jordan Engles, the son he always wanted.

As Jordan takes on brotherly roles around the house, like escorting Rachel to the youth singing, the enmity between the two grows. Besides, Jordan has one foot in the Englisch world and is determined not to get involved with an Amish girl.

Neither realizes that God has sent an angel, Nathaniel, to help mend their hearts. The angel’s intervention helps them find peace and healing in accepting God’s will for their lives.

A date with Chef Wan

image

I had a date with Chef Wan, along with my two good friends, Littlemermy and Mamasprout last Saturday. Too bad Mamakucing couldn’t join us. I was really hoping that Mamakucing and Smallkucing could join us too. :-( Poor Smallkucing and Papakucing is down with HMFD. :-( They had to be quarantine instead of joining us. :-( I do hope they will get well soon. It’s simply not the same without them.

image

Neway, the workshop event was hosted by Simplot, BBC Good Food&Travel as well as BSH Home Appliances. The intimate cooking workshop was held in Bosch new showroom in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

This workshop was aimed to encourage the consumers to use Simplot hashbrowns creatively in their cookings.

image

Apart from exclusive cooking lessons with Chef Wan during the event, there’s also fun quiz session with him. I got alot of goodies during the quiz session. LOL. Thank God I paid attention during his lessons.Look at all these stuff…the sponsors was certainly generous.

image

Goodie bag from the sponsor, containing magazines, cling wrap and sauce samples.

image

Cooler bag, apron, Simplot hashbrown popcorn, and bake pasta sauce.

image

The stuff that I won during the quiz session, body lotion, laser pendrive and a white apron, which I managed to get the cheeky Chef Wan to autograph for me. Lol.

image

It was really a memorable experience to learn how to cook personally with Chef Wan. He is not only friendly, but a very patient and a very humble teacher. It was really an honour to be able to learn from him.

I will be sharing more about the workshop in the next post. So stay tune for more, guys.

*A word of warning though. Plenty of good food ahead. So don’t come here with an empty stomach*

Cleffairy: Special thanks to Chef Sidney Kan of Big Boys Oven for inviting me. I really appreciate it.

Soul Protector: Review and giveaway

Soul Protector is a really intriguing read. To be honest, I wasn’t really interested in this book when I first flipped through. I thought, it’s going to be ordinary read where I’d loose interested after awhile, but thank God that’s not the case. This book is an interesting read and quite a revelation in itself. My only problem is probably that I would very much prefer to read the first instalment of this book beforehand. I feel as if I missed something even though this book is good to read as a standalone.
If you like mystery and adventure and some romance, you will like this book. I highly recommends this book to those who thirst for some adventurous escapism.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Wanna win a digital copy of this book? Well just leave a comment and one lucky commenter will be picked to win the book.
