What I Really Wanted to See in Your Christmas Picture

20130107-160924.jpg

As I take down all the lovely Christmas cards we received this year and reflect upon friendships far and near, old a new, a couple of things come to mind. First, late February may or may not be an appropriate deadline for getting our own Christmas cards out. I may have to let that illusion go this year. And second, no offense to all of your adorable children, but I could give and elf’s armit how much cuter they have grown this year.

What I am really interested in, what we all really want to se...

Until Death Do Us Part, or I Fall Off This Float

As if the wedding industry isn’t hard enough on marriage. As if Four Weddings, Say Yes to the Dress, and The Wedding Party don’t foster impossibly destructive fantasies of happily ever after. As if The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have not bitch slapped marriage in the face for too many years already. Now we have a float.

I was doing dishes when the Rose Parade’s wedding float paused on the big screen in my living room. All I could think of was, awww… “Quick, kids, change the channel.”It used...

Parenting News Predictions for 2013

In 2012 we were shamed bysuperior French parenting, gawked atHoney Boo Boo, and witnessedpotty training at a restaurant table. What will 2013 bring? We have no idea. But, here are ourbest, tongue-in-cheek guesses for top parenting news stories in the new year.

Breastfeeding

To address pressure from breastfeeding proponents and detractors, baby formula makers will introduce a full body Mommy Doll. This lifelike facsimile will provide simulated lactation, allowing children to nurse well into thei...

Ain’t No Party Like an Ultrasound Party

The ultrasound tech squirts gel on her belly, the expectant mom looks at the beating heart on the flickering screen, and a dozen friends and family members huddle in for a closer look — drinks in hand.

Welcome to the new frontier in pregnancy oversharing: the ultrasound party. Good luck selecting the right gift.

Thanks to improved ultrasound technology, parents-to-be can now invite friends and family to share in an intimate viewing of baby in utero.

“It’s our opportunity to see those little fing...

Merry Christmas, We Survived the Apocalypse

Obviously I have been avoiding posting anything here until I was sure I’d be around to check the analytics later. And since I am, I want to wish each of you a very merry Christmas, belated happy Hannukah, super Solstice, and a Kick-Ass Kwanza. If I’ve missed your holiday, we are probably not that close.

Here’s to vodka and dairy and criminal amounts of sugar.

And here’s a little something from the archives to stuff your stocking:

Top 10 Things That Could Go Wrong While Baking.

Need a Laugh? Pick up Who Peed on My Yoga Mat?

Need a lift? These reviewers found escape in Who Peed on My Yoga Mat? I hope you can too. Thanks to all these lovely ladies!

Adrienne at LitStack should have written my back cover copy: “These 40+ essays, each short enough to read at a red light, peel back the veneer of suburban family perfection, layer by layer, to reveal the hilarious, irritating, unpredictable happenings of daily life.” She also vouches for the sexiness of my shoes.
Lyndi, the NWA Foodie, provides a review and a recipe. She...

Give the Gift of Books, via Email

If you have a reader on your holiday gift list, I’ve found the perfect solution. Amazon makes book-giving easier than a gift card, and more personal. With their suggestion feature, you can send someone any amount of Amazon credit, OR you can send a gift in the amount of a specific suggestion for a book you think they would love. But the receiver can use the gift amount for anything they want. It’s win-win. You get points for thoughtfulness; they get to pick exactly what they want–even if it’s...

Best Search Term EVER!

I pay attention to SEO. That stands for search engine optimization and it sounds fancy but it simply describes the process by which search engines find your website and list it in search results. Minding your SEO is good for business. It’s also a damn fine way to procrasitinate when you don’t want to do actual work. Part of SEO is analyzing the search terms people use to find your website. I get a lot of fun stuff that is related to my work, stuff like “funny PTA stories” and”funny books for...

Parents: It’s a Party, Leave the Kids at Home

Babies laughing, sleeping

When my son was a baby I took him everywhere. Because who wouldn’t be overjoyed to bask in the glow of a child, right? Perhaps that was Kelsey Grammer’s thought when he took his three-month old daughter to a Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion. Hollywoodgossip sitescriticized Grammer for subjecting a baby to boozy bunnies, but was that so wrong? The little cherub reportedly slept the whole time. I’d much rather see a baby at a party than an older child—especially one equipped with a phone...

Yoga Mat Launch and Virtual Tour Continues!

Thanks to everyone who came out Tuesday night to The Chancellor in Fayetteville to help launch Who Peed on My Yoga Mat? into the world! ‘Twas very swanky. Books were wrapped, Yoga-Tinis were consumed (en masse), and a good time was had by all.

Most important: I got to wear my sparkly pink shoes.

If you’ve picked up your copy and started to read, I’d love to know what you think! If you leave a review here on Amazon that will help others make the decision to buy the book too! And I would love you...
