Weekly Grins and Bubbles

It’s been a busy post-Spring Break week here at my keyboard. Things are heating up in my schedule, if not in the air outside. We are ready for spring. Ask my dog. She misses her walks. Here’s to all that was fit to blog about this week.

Do You Have Anything for Mother’s Day?

Despite the fact that I have written hundreds of pages and tens of thousands of words about the experience of being a mother, I am always at a loss when an editor requests something specific for a May magazine issue. “Do you have anything for Mother’s Day?” they ask. And responsive writer that I am I immediately start scanning my brain and my hard drive for essays that capture that “Mother’s Day” vibe. I usually come up blank. It’s ALL Mother’s Day EVERY day around this place.

A few of the top...

Johnny Depp’s Mustache, It’s a Classic

Oh, Johnny Depp, where have you been? Lately I have been sharing older posts that have been popular on this blog. It’s really a mystery sometimes, the things that resonate with followers of the blog and people who find it from some interesting search terms. (In case you’re wondering, just because I write about Whore Barbie does not mean this is the place to find “Arkansas and Oklahoma whores”.) I should not be surprised that my post about Johnny Deep is popular. I mean really, a Johnny Depp m...

10 Reasons to Download Sexy, Smart, & Search Engine Friendly

Had a great time speaking about how to get found online with the local chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (or as it is know in Northwest Arkansas, Mitchell Communications Group.) We talked about similarities and differences between online discoverability and traditional advertising and public relations. As one audience member put it after the talk “SEO is not rocket science.” Maybe I said that, I don’t know. But after speaking to that room full of people and watching the nods...

Time to Slow Down

20130317-083201.jpgThis is what happens when you try to color your hair, write a quick turnaround story, and make breakfast at the same time. Yes, the green stuff is breakfast. And yes, the MacBook is just outside the frame. And yes, that’s me behind the camera with my Revlon Colorsilk Medium Rich Brown #47 dripping off my scalp.

At the same time a load of laundry spun in the washer, my dog begged for a walk, and I was having three different text conversations that all involved scheduling the transportation of m...

Half Birthdays? No, Thank You

As if it’s not enough to plan and execute an annualbirthday partyfor each of your kids, complete with coordinating food, entertainment, decor andgoody bags, now we’re hearing that more and more parents are celebrating their children’s half-birthdays, too. Whether we blamePinterestfor all those cute half-birthdaycakeideas or the evil genius ofHalfBirthdays.com, this trend is gaining traction.

Spring Appearances, SEO, and a Sexy Old Post

It was a quiet week around here. Maybe because I was on a beach in Cancun. Having a hard time getting back to the grind. Sunburns don’t play well with 40 degree weather. Here’s the week that was.

We’ve Been Married a Very Long Time

Don’t ask my husband how long we’ve been married because it will start a fight. I get pissy when he doesn’t know the answer. I suppose I might be looking at this the wrong way. He is living in blissful ignorance because I am such a treat. I know the exact count, in years: 18. And a half. That half makes all the difference.

My husband is a very, very good husband. He does all the things a husband is supposed to do, and more. But there are some things he just won’t do. Funny stories for women, t...

Is Anyone Listening?

I often speak to groups about socia media and people almost always want to know how often to post. How much is enough and how much is going to cause the audience to tune them out completely. The short answer is that there is no magic formula, that every business and audience is going to be different. You have to experiment. But don’t be afraid to repeat yourself. Don’t be obnoxious, don’t be offensive, but know what you have to say and keep saying it.

Why? Because nobody is listening. Rather,...

Come See Me Sometime!

Starting next month I’ll start getting out and about and I’d love to meet you at any of the following events. I’m focused on writing conferences this year, but will likely pop in at a blogging hot spot or two.

First, I’m headed all the way to downtown Rogers on April 4th for a fun Be Inspired dinner sponsored by the First United Methodist church. I’ll be presenting my popular talk, Balance is a Lie and Life Is Short: 10 Ways to Add Time To Your Days. Let me know if you’d like to come and I’ll...
