Arkansas Literary Festival, I Love You

I wanted to write sooner about all the fun I had at the Arkansas Literary Festival, but I was just too tired. I’m still a little exhausted from all the excitement, and my suitcase is still open on the dining room floor, but I can’t hold it in any longer. If you haven’t been to Little Rock lately, you need to visit. The River Market District was gorgeous and kept me too busy, but in a good way. Here are the highlights.

Umbilical Cord Art: One More Thing New Moms Don’t Need

Umbilical cords are no longer merely a lifeline between a mother and child. They are more than a potential source of stem cells with the power to provide life saving medical miracles. Now, with some clever marketing, they could become the art medium de jour. New parents now have the option to explore the artistic potential of the umbilical cord. And I’m not talking about that nub hanging off your baby’s belly. Here are four very good reasons to resist the indulgence.

Birth Wreaths: Southern Charm or Over the Top Post-Natal Insanity?

You’ve got your bag packed for the hospital, your stash of onesies and diapers ready for the new baby… but do you have your birth wreath?

If you’re thinking, “my birthwhat?” you’re probably not from the South.

These uber-decorated, creative and crafty wreaths hang on the hospital room door after baby is born, usually with a plaque listing baby’s vital statistics.A recent thread on BabyCenterreveals they’re all the rage in southern states, where many hospital maternity wards feature hooks on pat...

My Italian Greyhound: The Cutest Classic Bubbly

traits of italian greyhoundsOur Italian Greyhound is buried under a snowball tree in the backyard. The tiny leaves have shown up, reminding me of Simon. He wasn’t long for this world, but he made quite an impression while he was here. I originally wrote this post as a humorous counterpart to a more flat article I wrote about choosing an Italian Greyhound for your family. Turns out inquiring minds want to know. That makes me happy because Simon was special.

His poops were small.

Book Club Questions for Who Peed on My Yoga Mat?

Book club question funny book

If you choose a funny book for book club you might not need questions. If you choose Who Peed on My Yoga Mat?you might be too busy laughing to focus on any formal questions. Not because the author is so funny–though she is slightly amusing, she’s been told. No, you’ll be too busy laughing at each other’s stories. That is my favorite part about getting together with women who read my books. I love hearing their stories, the ones reading mine reminded them of.

But just in case, here are a few qu...

What Moms Do All Day

When asked about my work, my son once told a teacher I talk to my friends all day. Not too far off. (I have a dream job, right?) Not all kids are quite as clear about how Mommy spends her days. Check out this fun post on iVillage for some great quotes from the cutest kids. You may just know a few!

Celebrating Susie Homemaker

pretty table for EasterI posted this picture on Facebook the night before Easter. Forty-three people “liked” the picture. I’m sure many more saw it.

Look at it. A thing of beauty. And it looked even better in real life. Easter– BAM! Nailed it. My daughter picked out the pieces. I found the flowers and made a special trip to the fabric store for burlap.

The silver you see there, belonged to my husband’s paternal grandmother. The tablecloth, a gift from his mother.

Call me Susie Homemaker. That table was Pinterest-worth...
