Frank Ocean Drops Out of Coachella Due to Leg Injuries

Frank Ocean‘s time in the desert has dried up.

The musician—who was the Sunday night headliner at Coachella 2023—will not return for the second weekend of the Indio, Calif. music festival, his representative confirmed to E! News.

The rep said that on behalf of “doctor’s advice,” Frank cannot take to the stage after sustaining “two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”

“Frank Ocean will not be performing at weekend 2 of Coachella,” the rep said in a statement April 19. “After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1, Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity.”

The statement comes after Ocean’s April 16 set—his first live concert in nearly six years—raised eyebrows. The performance started almost an hour late, and fans complained they weren’t able to see Ocean onstage due to him being positioned far away from the crowd. Ocean, 35, also abruptly ended his show earlier than fans expected due to Coachella’s curfew, he said at the time.

Damar Hamlin wants to raise awareness for this rare cardiac condition

Who is he? Damar Hamlin is a 25-year-old NFL safety for the Buffalo Bills, and made headlines earlier this year for collapsing on the field during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2nd.

Hamlin fell to the ground after colliding with an opposing player during that game, and didn’t get back up. He was promptly resuscitated on the field and rushed to the hospital.   Hamlin remained in critical condition for days, and was hospitalized until January 11th.   While he has thanked the public for their support since, he only announced the cause for his frightening health scare this week. His collapse garnered attention for multiple reasons; the NFL’s speedy response has been credited with helping save Hamlin’s life, and the incident was used by anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists as fodder against the COVID-19 shot.

What’s the big deal? This week, Hamlin announced his clearance to return to the NFL in September, with a renewed sense of purpose: raising awareness for the cardiac condition that caused his collapse in the first place.

Hamlin attributed his collapse to commotio cordis, a rare cause of cardiac arrest, “that starts with a blow to the chest in a precise spot at just the wrong time in the heartbeat,” according to the American Heart Association. After recovering and consulting with medical experts, he’s been given a clear pass to return to the game. Now, he’s focused on raising awareness, and shared his new goal: “Commotio cordis is the leading cause of death in youth athletes across all sports. So that’s something that I personally will be taking a step in to make a change. Also, with that being said, all of the awareness around CPR and access to AEDs have been lowering that number as well.”

What are people saying now?

On his feelings towards returning to the sport:

My heart is still in it. My heart is still in the game, I love the game. It’s something I want to prove to myself — not nobody else. I just want to show people that fear is a choice. You can keep going in something without having the answers and without knowing what’s at the end of the tunnel. Or you might feel anxious, you might feel any type of way, but you keep putting that right foot in front of the left one and you keep going. I want to stand for that.

On surviving this ordeal:

“Not to sound cliché, but the wild moment is every day just being able to wake up and take deep breaths and live a peaceful life. To have a family, to have people around me that love me and care about me, and for those people to still have me in their lives. You know they almost lost me. I died on national TV in front of the whole world. So, I see it from all perspectives. For them to still have me around, and for me to still have them, it goes both ways. And I lost a bunch of people in my life, and I know a bunch of people who have lost people in their lives, and I know that feeling. So that right there is just the biggest blessing of it all. For me to still have my people, and for my people to still have me.”

So, what now?

According to the NFL, Hamlin’s foundation, Chasing M, will be raising awareness to CPR training and efforts to provide defibrillators to youth sports. Despite this past experience with playing football Hamlin says this on his return: “I’ve been beating statistics my whole life, so I like my chances here.”

Volkswagen becomes the first foreign automaker to benefit from an electric vehicle credit

Volkswagen officials had said Monday that they expected the ID.4 to be eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, but the company was still awaiting proper documentation from its battery supplier to submit to the Treasury Department.

The Treasury confirmed eligibility on Wednesday, and the ID.4 was officially added to the list of eligible vehicles on the government’s fueleconomy.gov site.

The ID.4 is built at a factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Production began in October – two months after President Joe Biden’s climate law, the Inflation Reduction Actadded new domestic sourcing requirements to the electric vehicle tax credit.

All of the other 14 available electric vehicle models eligible for the tax credit are from Tesla or one of the Detroit Big Three – Ford, GM or Stellantis. Some of these US-made EVs qualify for the full $7,500 credit, while others qualify for the $3,750 half credit.

The IRA’s changes to the tax credit have irked US allies, particularly in Europe, where government officials have objected to having their car brands excluded from the tax incentive.

The initial Treasury list also omitted vehicles from US-based Rivian, which exclusively manufactures electric pickup trucks and SUVs. This company announced on Wednesday that its 2023 R1T and R1S models meet the criteria for the Critical Minerals Sourcing Tax Credit – but most vehicle configurations do not meet the government’s requirement that SUVs , pickup trucks or vans cost $80,000 or less. (The limit is $55,000 for cars.)

Rivian said the tax credit may still be available, pending inclusion on the Treasury website, for buyers who previously locked in prices below $80,000 but have yet to take delivery. But those shoppers would still have to meet the law’s income threshold, which excludes shoppers with adjusted gross incomes over $150,000 to $300,000.

A coroner rules the singer Aaron Carter drowned in a tub from sedatives and inhalant

LOS ANGELES — Singer and rapper Aaron Carter accidentally drowned in his bathtub as a result of sedatives he’d taken and gas used in spray cleaners he had inhaled, a coroner’s report said Tuesday.

Carter, the younger brother of the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, was found submerged and dead at age 34 in the bathtub of his home in Lancaster, California, on Nov. 5, the autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner said.

Sheriff’s deputies had been the last people to see Carter alive when they visited his house at 2 a.m. on Nov. 4 for a welfare check after he had been seen and heard “huffing” an inhalant on an Instagram live video, according to a police report included in the autopsy findings. He asked the deputies to leave, and they did.

The autopsy found that the sedative alprazolam, often sold under the brand name Xanax, was found in his system, as was the compressed gas difluoroethane, which the report says is “a gas commonly used as a propellant in air spray cleaners,” which “can induce feelings of euphoria when inhaled.”

The two substances incapacitated him in the tub, and caused the drowning, the report said.

Later in the evening, after deputies checked on Carter, he missed an appointment with a drug counselor, the police report said.

The following day, a person whom authorities called a house sitter at the time but whom the report identifies in quotes as a “housekeeper” came to Carter’s house to offer him coffee. She let herself in when she got no response and heard his dogs barking, according to the report.

The woman found him submerged, wearing a T-shirt and necklace, in a Jacuzzi-style tub with the jets running, and called 911. The operator told her to pull him out and perform CPR, according to the report. Paramedics immediately declared him dead when they arrived.

Investigators found several prescription bottles and multiple scattered cans of an electronic duster that he used for inhaling.

The report referred to Carter as “a celebrity with a known history of substance abuse” who had “multiple interactions with local police relating to the substance abuse.” It cited a particular history of inhalant abuse, and a recent relapse.

Carter began performing as a child in the 1990s, opening for acts including his brother’s boy band and Britney Spears. His career peak came in 2000 with the triple-platinum album “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” which produced hit singles including the title song and “I Want Candy.”

He also acted on television shows including “Lizzie McGuire,” and appeared on the family reality show “House of Carters” and “Dancing With the Stars.”

Carter for years had been open about his substance abuse struggles, detailing his issues with inhalants in a 2019 episode of the talk show “The Doctors.” He also said in the interview that he was taking medications for acute anxiety and bipolar disorder.

Nick Carter said after his younger brother’s death that “I have always held onto the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.”

Multiple torch-carrying marchers in the Charlottesville rally are indicted

RICHMOND, Va. — Nearly six years after a large gathering of white nationalists in Charlottesville erupted in violent clashes with counter-protesters, a grand jury in Virginia has indicted multiple people on felony charges for carrying flaming torches with the intent to intimidate.

The Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release that the indictments relate to an event on Aug. 11, 2017. That’s when a group of white nationalists carrying torches marched through the campus of the University of Virginia, some chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

Commonwealth’s Attorney James Hingeley did not say in the release how many people have been indicted and did not immediately return a call and email seeking comment on Tuesday. According to electronic court records, the indictments against three people have been unsealed, including William Zachary Smith, of Nacona, Texas; Tyler Bradley Dykes, of Bluffton, South Carolina; and Dallas Medina, of Ravenna, Ohio.

Each is charged with a single count of burning an object with the intent of intimidating a person or group of people. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.

Smith’s attorney, Cody Villalon, declined to comment when reached by phone Tuesday. Dykes and Medina do not have the name of any attorneys listed in electronic court records.

The indictments, which were issued in February but only recently unsealed, come almost six years after violence broke out during two days of demonstrations by the largest gathering of white nationalists in a decade.

Clashes began on the night of Aug. 11, 2017, during the torch march, and continued the following day, when a “Unite the Right” rally was planned. James Alex Fields Jr., a white supremacist from Maumee, Ohio, rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring dozens. Fields is serving a life sentence for murder and hate crimes.

Prosecutors said the indictments were issued “as part of a criminal investigation that is active and ongoing,” adding they work with law enforcement to investigate, analyze applicable laws, and bring charges “when appropriate.”

“This is our process regardless of how much time has passed or where the alleged offenders may be found,” they said.

Former President Donald Trump set off a firestorm of criticism when he said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the clashes between white nationalists and anti-racist demonstrators in Charlottesville.

1 person is dead after a parking garage collapses in New York City

NEW YORK — A parking garage collapsed Tuesday in lower Manhattan’s Financial District, killing one worker, injuring five and crushing cars as concrete floors fell on top of each other like a stack of pancakes, officials said.

Vehicles tumbled into what looked like a frozen stream of sedans and SUVs. People nearby described a fearsome rumbling, followed by screams.

Ahmed Scott arrived to collect his car after work and found a disaster in the making.

In a video he shot from across the street, someone off-camera yells, “Guard! 911! 911! There’s a building collapsing on Ann Street,” followed by the sound of something crumpling. About 45 seconds later, two women run out, saying the building fell while they were inside it. A man stands on a fire escape as bystanders try to figure out how to help him get down. He eventually did, Scott said.

“I hope ain’t nobody else in there,” Scott recalled thinking, worrying for the garage workers he’d gotten to know.

To Jadess Speller, a student at nearby Pace University, the collapse “felt like an earthquake — like the earth opened up inside, like that’s how violent it was.” Other students described seeing cars falling in the building.

One vehicle landed on its end in the garage entrance, a photo posted by Mayor Eric Adams’ office showed.

Authorities believed they had accounted for everyone inside the building, but searches continued Tuesday evening to make sure no one was in any of the squashed cars, Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito said. One garage employee was rescued via a neighboring roof after being trapped on an upper floor, he said.

“He was conscious and alert and moving around, calling us. He just couldn’t get down,” Esposito said. Four of the injured were hospitalized and in stable condition, and the fifth refused medical attention, he said.

Enlarge this image

The garage caved in around 4 p.m., a few blocks from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, and about half a mile (0.8 km) from the New York Stock Exchange. Pace evacuated an adjacent dorm and classroom building, and canceled all evening classes as it assessed the buildings’ safety. School officials sent the displaced students to a student center while working out other accommodations.

Don Mulligan was on the 17th floor of a nearby hotel when he heard a roar like a jet flying overhead and felt the high-rise sway.

“You knew something was happening,” said Mulligan, of Cincinnati. The hotel was evacuated, he said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the collapse. City Buildings Department records show the three-story structure has been a garage at least since the 1920s, and there are no recent permits for construction.

Messages were left for a parking company that lists the garage as one of its properties.

The collapse left the building “completely unstable,” Adams said at a news conference. Esposito said firefighters had to pull out because of the danger, conducting searches instead with a drone and robotic dog.

The building was “all the way pancaked, collapsed all the way to the cellar floor,” acting Buildings Commissioner Kazimir Vilenchik said.

William Flashnick, 19, was in a Pace classroom when he and his friends thought they heard an explosion and ran to a window to look. As they opened the window, a plume of thick dust rose in the air.

When it cleared, they peered down into the parking structure, where cars were tossed asunder and a top deck had cracked open.

Flashnick initially worried for all of their lives. One of his first thoughts was of the World Trade Center, which looms over the neighborhood.

“We freaked out. Given the history of this place, it’s a little scary,” he said.
