Jeff Shell, the head of Comcast’s vast entertainment and media business, NBCUniversal, is leaving his role immediately, the company said Sunday, after an investigation found that he had engaged in “inappropriate conduct.”

Shell had worked at Comcast for 19 years. In a brief statement, he apologized for an “inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company,” and said he was “truly sorry” for letting down colleagues.

Comcast’s statement added that outside counsel had been hired to oversee the investigation into Shell’s behavior following a complaint, but provided very few other details.

According to a person with knowledge, the complaint was filed recently by the employee, who was a subordinate, and the company acted within days of the complaint.

Comcast has not yet named a successor to Shell, and announced that NBCU’s senior managers would now report directly into the president of the Comcast, Mike Cavanagh.

Cavanagh said he was “disappointed to share this news” in a separate statement signed by himself and Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts, the son of the Philadelphia-based company’s founder. “We built this company on a culture of integrity,” Roberts and Cavanagh wrote. “You should count on your leaders to create a safe and respectful workplace.”

Allegations of sexual misconduct loom large at NBCUniversal. In 2020, Vice Chairman Ron Meyer was pushed out after disclosing that he had paid hush money to an actress with whom he had had an affair.

In 2017, NBC fired Today show host Matt Lauer after accusations he had sexually harassed colleagues, including an instance of assault, all claims Lauer denied.

Strep throat infections soared above pre-COVID highs, report says: ‘We missed cases’

After plummeting during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and 2021, strep throat infections skyrocketed in February 2023, according to a report from Epic Research, a health analytics company.

The rate of group A strep infections (caused by the bacteria Streptococcus) was 30% higher than the previous peak seen in February 2017, according to the report.

Before the pandemic, between January 2017 and February 2020, cases of strep throat followed a consistent trend. Usually, cases would start to rise in the fall and peak in February – before falling back in the spring and summer, according to reports from Epic, which is based in Verona, Wisconsin.

When streptococci cause invasive infections

“Antibiotics for strep throat shorten the duration of illness and prevent the infection from getting worse and spreading to other parts of the body.”

Understanding the Antibiotic Shortage

With the current shortage of antibiotics, some cases are not receiving timely treatment, Dr. Siegel said.

“When we don’t deal with it quickly, it has more time to spread,” he told Fox News Digital.

Tips to prevent the spread of streptococci

Group A strep bacteria are spread through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, according to the CDC’s website.

“The recent onslaught of viruses, including COVID-19, has weakened people’s immune systems.”

“If you touch your mouth, nose, or eyes after touching something that contains these droplets, you can get sick,” the CDC said.

JACKSON, Mississippi — The NAACP warns “separate and unequal policing” will return to Mississippi’s majority-black capital under the direction of a state-run police department, and the civil rights organization is suing the governor and others responsible for it.
