Disgruntled farmers are returning 200 road signs they removed last week in Ariege

“No country without a peasant” and “Peasant, my passion, but what a disappointment,” can we read on banners displayed by the demonstrators who hung these exit signs at the prefecture gate, in response to the call of the Young Farmers ( JA) and FDSEA 09.

“We work 70-80 hours a week and we don’t get minimum wage,” complained Sébastien Durand (FDSEA) during the peaceful demonstration, in the presence of the prefect of Ariege. “Ten months later, the bill is gone,” he added, referring to the measures announced by the government in response to the farmers’ mobilization launched at the beginning of the year.

Return in October. Trump is the favorite

October is a good time for Donald Trump. When it looked like Kamala Harris was the favorite to win the presidency, her campaign fizzled out in the fall and the Republican got wind in his sails. Now, according to the bookies and prediction markets, the 78-year-old has a slightly better chance of winning the Oval Office, although it is very tight and the margin is likely to be minimal. Surveys, though not all, show favorable trends for New Yorkers in key swing states. So much so that industry portal The Hill, which analyzes various types of data and runs a special “election barometer,” currently has him at 52 percent. chances for the presidency. This is the highest figure in this cycle and the first time above 50%.

UK prison release LIVE: Labor considers letting criminals serve sentences at home | United Kingdom | News

Hundreds more prisoners were released early today by Sir Keir Starmer as the Labor government considers allowing prisoners to serve sentences at home.

The Labor government is pressing ahead with plans to release around 1,000 prisoners, despite calls for a reversal and public safety concerns.

The parole scheme allows people serving sentences for lesser crimes to leave prison after serving 40 per cent of their sentence. It does not apply to prisoners serving sentences for certain crimes, including sex crimes, serious violent crimes, domestic violence, terrorism and national security crimes.

Former Home Secretary Dame Priti Patel called on the Ministry of Justice to halt the scheme following reports that those already released had reoffended and a lack of data on reoffending rates, recall from prison and support for victims.

Meanwhile, the Labor government has announced a review where prisoners could be placed on some form of house arrest to reduce pressure on prison numbers.

Express.co.uk is at HMP Wandsworth this morning speaking to those prisoners who have been released.

Today’s Almanac, 22 October: The Decline of ‘Old Dates’

He was born on October 22, 1811 Franz Lisztoutstanding piano virtuoso and profound innovator of nineteenth-century music. As an adult, he composed only one work, which remains unfinished, The Sardanapalorediscovered only a few years ago. On October 22, 1883, Faust of Gounod, opened to the public Metropolitan Opera House of New York. The Old Met occupied a block on Broadway, between West 39th and West 40th. Residents of the Big Apple nicknamed it the “Brick Brewery” because it looked somewhat industrial from the outside. Inside, however, there was nothing to envy a large European theater: stucco, velvet, crystal chandeliers and a gold damask curtain. It is also known for its excellent acoustics. But in the middle of the twentieth century, its spaces were already considered insufficient (especially behind the scenes). So it was decided to build a new one elsewhere, and given the sensitivity of the Americans to the old – very small – the glorious theater came to a bad end: it was demolished in 1967, despite a public campaign to save it. Today there is a skyscraper in its place. The “New Met” at Lincoln Center, opened in 1966.
