Almost 16,000 Turkish citizens have to leave the country
Almost 16,000 Turkish citizens in Germany had to leave the country at the end of September. Of the 15,789 affected, 12,835 had tolerance status, a spokeswoman for the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) told dpa upon request. Overall, Turkish citizens made up seven percent of all people in Germany who were forced to leave the country.
Repatriation is high on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s agenda at his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.
In the first half of 2024, 441 people from Germany were transferred to Turkey deported, according to a federal government response. In 2023, a total of 1,300 Turkish citizens were deported from Germany. The federal government wants to increase returns and has previously announced “success” in talks with Ankara.
Turkey is chasing Syria and Afghanistan is the third most common country of origin for asylum claims. However, applications have little chance of success: the pass rate for Turkish applicants this year was just under 10 percent – the average percentage is 46.1 percent.

“Runjaic is preparing the anti-Milan speech”
Tomorrow on Milan resumes its championship and does so by hosting one of the teams that in recent history has always troubled it, regardless of coaches or players,Udinese. The Friulians, who this year called to lead Kosta Runjaicthey got off to a great start in the league, so much so that they are on 13 pointstwo more than the Rossoneri: a challenge that, despite being played at the San Siro, promises to be very difficult for Fonseca’s side.
Today on Gazzetta dello Sport gives an account of the Friuli’s preparations for the challenge and headlines as follows: “Runjaic prepares the dam against Milan”. The coach is almost overwhelmed in midfield as the pink highlights: “Six for three places. A lot in the midfield, Payero and Lovric are good, but for the coach there are no untouchables.” On the field, however, they could also have first-hand space Karlstrom and Eckelenkamp.
Today’s Almanac, October 18: From the ice of Alaska to the beaches of Puerto Rico
On October 18, 1867Alaska officially becomes part of the United States. Washington bought it from the Russian Empire for $7.2 million (equivalent to about $129 today). More than one criticized the purchase, strongly supported by the Secretary of State William Seward. A vast territory, then practically uninhabited and – at the time – considered to be devoid of resources. Things changed when it was discovered to be very rich in gold and other raw materials instead. Became a state – the largest in the union – in 1959 (just ahead of Hawaii). Puerto Rico state is not yet. The island was ceded by Madrid to the United States on October 18, 1898, after the Spanish-American War. There have been various non-binding referendums over the years to decide the island’s future – whether to remain an “unincorporated territory” or become a full-fledged state – but the debate is still open.
Baby dies in Channel shipwreck
During an operation to retrieve migrants who had fallen into the water, “sixty-five people were pulled out alive and well”, but “after a search, a baby was found unconscious in the water and unfortunately pronounced dead”, the Channel Maritime Prefecture said and North Sea.
Often childrenThis death brings to at least 52 the number of people who have died trying to cross in 2024, a record since early 2018 of the phenomenon of small boats, those makeshift boats used by migrants to try to reach to England.
These victims regularly include children. On September 3, half of the twelve victims of the worst shipwreck of the year, which left 12 dead, were minors. On October 5, a two-year-old child was crushed to death in a boat carrying nearly 90 people and its engine failed.
Conditions for crossing the English Channel, “one of the busiest areas in the world” according to the maritime prefecture, are particularly dangerous, on overloaded boats on which few passengers have life jackets.

Buffett’s Berkshire continues to reduce Bank of America stake
Warren Buffett walks out and meets with Berkshire Hathaway shareholders before their annual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska on May 3, 2024.
David A. Grogan
Billionaire Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway has unloaded more Bank of America shares as it continues to reduce its stake in the US banking giant, according to a regulatory filing.
Berkshire sold nearly 8.7 million shares for $370 million as of Oct. 15, the filing shows.
Last week, Berkshire sold 9.5 million shares worth $382.4 million, which brought her stake in the company to less than 10 percent, according to a separate regulatory filing.
The investment giant began reducing its stake in mid-July, when it sold about 33.9 million shares for about $1.48 billion. It has since earned more than $10 billion from those sales.
Buffett, one of the world’s most respected investors, first invested in Bank of America in 2011 when he bought $5 billion worth of preferred stock.
Canada to provide 65 million Canadian dollars in military aid to Ukraine By Reuters
OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada plans to give Ukraine a C$64.8 million ($47 million) military aid package that will include small arms, ammunition and protective equipment, Defense Minister Bill Blair said in a statement on Friday .
The aid package, which also provides money for training Ukrainian troops, is part of a C$500 million military funding package committed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in July.
“The military aid announced today provides Ukraine with critical resources needed to defend against Russian aggression. Canada will continue to do what is necessary to help them achieve victory,” Blair said.
Canada, one of Kiev’s strongest supporters internationally, said last month it would donate 80,840 surplus small unarmed air-to-surface missiles to Ukraine, as well as 1,300 warheads.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Canada has provided C$4.5 billion in military aid.
