Jenna Jaxon talks about Two Heroes, One Book from her newest release - Time Enough to Love #newrelease

Two Heroes, One Book

When I was writing my very first romance novel, I started in an organized manner with a detailed story outline.  I still have that outline saved and it is amazing how different it is from the book that was finally written.  And those changes are all due to one character who decided he wanted to be a hero.
My story was about a knight, Sir Geoffrey Longford, who was betrothed to Lady Alyse de Courcy, whom he had never met. They are both courtiers in the service of Princess Joanna of England. Geoffrey falls in love with Alyse and therefore vows he will win her heart before they are married. Pretty straightforward. 
Then my muse whispers, “You need more conflict.” So I create a best friend for Geoffrey, Thomas Knowlton, Lord Braeton, with whom the 17 year old heroine is infatuated.  Nice addition to the conflict. And Thomas is a fun, secondary character who will be part of the courtiers of the court, but not much more. He will only be in the first third of the book.
Then, just after what I call in my head, Book One, ends and Geoffrey is called home, I realize I need someone to bring Alyse a message from Geoffrey.  The next thing I know, Thomas is waving his hand and saying, “I’ll do it.” And in that moment, the entire rest of the outline was thrown out. Because I suddenly re-envisioned the whole novel as a love triangle brought about by the treachery and ambition of Geoffrey’s father. That became Book Two.
But now I had a big conflict of my own, because I had two heroes, Geoffrey and Thomas.  And Book Three is the story of who gets the girl and why and how.  It was incredibly hard to write.  I had two very different but very likeable heroes who both love the heroine and whom the heroine loves.  If that sounds familiar, it’s a common trope in romance.  The most popular one in recent memory has to be The Twilight Saga.
So I now have Team Geoffrey and Team Thomas.  And who the hell gets the girl? 
Geoffrey is the big, brooding, bruiser of a knight, whose major character flaw is jealousy over Alyse’s attitude toward Thomas.  Thomas is suave, the playboy of the medieval world type, much more the wit, whose jealousy surfaces, but who manages to control it.  His major flaw is his jaded attitude toward everyone and everything.
This all made the book harder to write because while there is an HEA as there must be, it is not a ménage a trois.  So someone has to lose the girl.  Jacob did not get Bella.  And in Beleaguered, someone will get the girl and someone will not.  Who will it be?  Only time, and the book, will tell.

When Geoffrey puts his mind to wooing Alyse, he is delighted to find her succumbing to his seduction. But when cruel circumstances separate them, Geoffrey must watch helplessly as Thomas steps in to protect Alyse—and falls in love with her himself.As the three courtiers accompany Princess Joanna to her wedding in Spain, they run headlong into the Black Plague. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both the men she loves. But which love will survive?
 
TIME ENOUGH TO LOVE EXCERPTGeoffrey hurried on with a suggestion. “’Twould be the work of a few moments for me to teach it you, my lady.” It would have to serve. She shot a look over her shoulder at her husband, who nodded and laughed with the princess though his eyes were trained on her. Best get on with it then. The sooner ’twas done, the better. “Your skill at dancing is such that you would certainly learn the steps with but slight instruction from me.” Geoffrey leaned so close his voice, against her ear made her jump and recall herself. She stepped back and looked at him.His practiced courtier’s smile flickered at her, and she caught something deeper shining in his eyes that she fought not to see. Her heart stuttered a beat.Her body flushed with the anticipation of dancing with him again even as misgivings swirled in her mind. No good would come of this dance, but Thomas watched closely to see that she acted cordially to Geoffrey. Would that it was an act. With a sense of heavy foreboding, she extended her hand to him. “Very well, Sir Geoffrey. What must I do first?”He placed her hand atop his arm and led her to their place in the circle of dancers then grasped her hand to pull her around to face him. The moment his hand touched her skin, a streak of fire shot through her. Her mouth went dry, and her gaze flew to his face. Surely he felt that as well? He stared back, his eyes mirroring all too clearly the blaze that coursed up her arm. Damn Geoffrey Longford.In a daze, she looked around at the other dancers, expecting them to stare accusingly at her. As if they could see this sinful feeling that tore at her soul. At a loss for how to act, she raised her gaze to beseech Geoffrey. “What do we do now?” ’Twas an apt question for, God forgive her, at the touch of Geoffrey’s hand, all thought of her husband had fled. She was back on the deck of the Phillipa, facing him once more. Loving him once more.Geoffrey cleared his throat, his face flushed, and said simply, “Follow me.” Then they were twirling around the circle, hands clasped, arms touching intimately, He seemed to brand her wherever he touched. The figure reversed, and her other side was scorched as if a red-hot blade seared her. Her gaze locked onto Geoffrey’s, and the music, the dancers, the Great Hall and all its inhabitants melted away until all that was left was the whisper of his breath in her ear and the heat of his body pressed close against her. He leaned in closer to whisper, “I must lift you now.” Before she could grasp that staggering news, his arm went around her waist and he lifted her, twirling them around full circle. She panted, blood pounding in her temples, roaring in her ears. They continued to dance, but she moved as though she were a doll made of rags, her legs barely able to stand. Her world narrowed to the single source of light and life that was the man who held her in his arms again. The man whose love she could no longer deny. Despite the agony of the betrayal, in the core of her being she knew neither the vows she had spoken to Thomas nor the passion they had enjoyed in his bed would ever match the intensity of love and belonging she shared with Geoffrey. As soon compare a candle’s flame to the sun.

From Book With No Name - which still doesn't have a title -- Erika is owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand and it's just another night at the club or so she thought.



Erik stood near the back and watched as Shangri–Lay played the crowd, flirting and laughing. When the next act was announced, three drag queens strutted across the stage, sporting large hair and long silver sequined gowns. The Diana Ross and the Supremes routine. Erik rubbed her neck. Cher would be next. Then probably Madonna. No. Brian wasn't here tonight. His night off. In an unusual for him move, he'd crawled into her office, on his knees, in a drag queen's overly dramatic way, begging for a Thursday night off. Something about someone named Alonzo. Great. Brian has a date. Alonzo has a date. Most of the people here are on dates. Why can't I get a date?She shifted her focus and checked the servers and bartenders. Everything seemed to be flowing along like any other Thursday night. The real craziness would be Saturday or so Rumors had it… and Rumors was never wrong. That's how he lived, by supplying information to the right ears at the right moment. And Rumors said a battleship was coming in to dock. She rubbed her forehead. Or some big military ship with lots of boys with money in their pockets and a horny cock in their pants, looking for a good time.Erik grinned, thinking about the potential sales, Thai New Year, sex-seeking tourists and a big ship in port. Some would come for the drinks and show. Some would come to cum. Pink Flamingo could supply which ever they wanted. This was, strictly speaking, a drag queen club, but everyone knew many of the performers supplemented their incomes and numerous patrons were working girls. A good time was easy to buy in Bangkok.A shrill screech to her right made Erik turn in time to watch the contents of a drink fly over a table and land on a red, infuriated face. The owner of the face bolted up and threw herself across the table. Erik recognized both as local prostitutes. Bitch fight. Never a good thing.Mumbling an apology as she pushed several people aside, Erik hurried to the fight."He's mine, you fuckin' bitch. You suck him one more time and I'll—" The neon orange wigged girl grabbed the other by the hair."Ah." The other screeched as her bright red wig was ripped from her head. She reached out with lacquered claws and slashed at her attacker's face.Erik reached the neon wigged girl as Puii, the bouncer, grabbed the other. Separating them was like trying to pull Velcro apart.Puii picked his fighter up and hoisted her over his shoulder. The man could lift a truck. Erik yelped as an elbow smashed into her chin. Crap, she'd grabbed the bigger and angrier girl.Patrons moved aside to avoid the girl's flaying arms and legs. No one offered to help.Erik fumbled, but wrapped her fingers around the girl's wrist and twisted it up behind her back. "Stop wiggling." She jerked the wrist harder. "Just go that way." She propelled the girl toward the back entrance.Puii held the door open. His package stood in the alley. With a quick shove, Erik released the girl. "I've had it with you two. You're banned from here for a month."He jerked the door shut with a bang, cutting off a stream of vulgar four-letter words. "You're bleeding." He pointed at her.Erik touched her chin then looked at the red on the tip of her finger. "Damn."In the quiet of her office, Erik allowed herself a moment to breathe and settle her nerves. The years of sore muscles and bruises from martial arts classes were paying off. Ironically, she'd expected to use the skills defending herself from a rape attack, not for tossing drunk hookers out of her club. She checked her face in her bathroom mirror. Just a small nick on the edge of her chin. She poured rubbing alcohol on a cloth and dabbed at the cut, hissing when the liquid burned. Unwrapping a small butterfly bandage, she placed it over the cut, admired her handiwork then returned to the club.Resuming her post at the back, she heaved a sigh. The show will go on. Shangri–Lay was back on stage, doing her job. The servers and bartenders kept everyone well supplied with drinks. The fight was already a distant memory.Puii strode in, worry etched his face. "Just got a text from Chaylos over at the Two-Headed Serpent. Somebody hit the Black Dragon. Killed everybody."

Scene set - Billionaire, Derek Davenport, has peeled off his expensive suit and lifestyle and has decided to hit the town.


Donning his jacket with the New York Rangers team’s logo, Derek checked the pocket for his car keys, then rode his private elevator down to the basement parking garage. He walked past his three expensive imports, unlocked the rusted, dark blue Camaro and drove out of the upper rich side. Traffic was a beast. Snow had fallen all day. The roads were slippery and regular people were anxious to get home. Not Derek. This week’s theme: Our Sexy New Year

I don't happen to have a New Year story - so I'll grab a winter scene - that's close to New Years :-)
From my twisted fairy tale - Sexy Red Hood.
The previous night had ended like a dream. This morning was a reality check. When Red woke, Will was not in the bed or in the cabin. He'd left no note. Refusing to think about it, Red returned to her room. After showering, she put her suitcases by the door and left for breakfast. Neither the knitting group nor Will were in the coffee shop. She ordered a coffee-to-go then disembarked from the ship, sat in the shuttle bus, put her earbuds in and rode to Miami International Airport focusing on a Beethoven Piano Sonata. After collecting then checking her luggage and clearing security, she made her way to Gate 42 and sat facing the windows overlooking the tarmac. She pulled her cell phone out of her purse and checked her messages. Hmph, it's been days since I looked at this thing. Life does continue when not tied to a cell. Unimportant. Don't care. She checked and deleted messages then switched over to her Twitter account. There were several tweets from her co-worker Katerina. She quickly deleted them all.  The people seated around her began to chuckle then laugh. Red looked up. Standing in front of her was Will, dressed in a winter parka, mukluks, scarf around his face and thick mittens. "Bg on Cgo tr." He pulled the scarf off his face. "I said, bring on the Chicago winter. This Miami boy isn't afraid."          She snorted. "You're nuts."

Kobo  What people are saying about Sexy Red Hood5 stars - An excellent retelling!This is quite a different retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood that we are all accustom to. It is definitely an adults only version, but a great one at that! I loved that there was a bit of mystery added in and even though the names gave a bit away as to who was who, you still weren't sure who Red would finally have in her bed. The fact that this took place on a seniors cruise was an added touch I really enjoyed. And the roll play at the end of the book was just so fitting!! I would definitely recommend this title and I will be reading more from this author.

Scene Set - Branwyn has travelled many miles to her new home. Today she learns her fate.

Duna Trea appeared, as if from nowhere. "Good morning Dune Branwyn. I trust you slept well and have recovered from your journey." She dropped into a deep curtsy. "Oh yes, Duna Trea. Duna Trea pointed to a smaller chair as she settled onto a velvet-cushioned one. She ran her hand down the sides of her dress smoothing out the wrinkles. In her youth, the blackness of her dress would have matched the color of her, now speckled with grey, hair. "We must converse. It is time to explain to you why you are here." "I know I have been given to a man. I understand my duty to my uncle and aunt. They raised me and I have been a burden to them. It is time I—" Duna Trea raised her hand. "That is not why. It is because of your wondrous beauty. Are not your cousins of a plainer state? It is most simple. You were gotten rid of. With your smooth, fair skin, bright green eyes, long, thick hair and full, healthy breasts, your uncle saw no chance for a good match for his daughters. " Branwyn started to speak but stopped. She bit her bottom lip to cease its trembling. Duna Trea continued, "A very rich man purchased you and he demands that you be trained to satisfy his specific tastes." "I served my aunt. I was a dutiful niece and learned to cook, sew, play the spinet, read and embroider. People have told me I have an enchanting voice and I know many songs. I am an accomplished young lady." "Those are not the skills your master wishes." "I…I understand there are needs of the bed, but those my husband will teach me." Blood rushed to Branwyn's cheeks at the vaguest mention of husband-wife relations. The duna shook her head. "Listen, Dune Branwyn. You must learn total obedience. You are now a dune. To become a duna you must lose all inhibitions." "When will I become a duna?" "When you’re taken." "Taken where?" Duna Trea sighed. "Not taken where, child, taken how. When a man takes you. When that which makes you a dune is lost, you become a duna." Trea continued, "Did no one teach you anything about relations between a man and a woman?" Branwyn shook her head. "It is not right to speak of these things. One must be pure on one’s…" Trea brushed a stray hair from her face. "When a young girl becomes ripe she must learn to serve. You have much to understand. 5 stars - Awesome steamy story - new favorite author
Branwyn is a complex character, who begins the book timid and modest. However, in Black Dorn, timid and modesty are two sinful attitudes. Quickly, she is thrown into a world of passion and sex. But she only has eyes for one man, Malack the Gon-Dra. He is fierce and does not hide his body or his lust. However, Branwyn catches his eye and soon his heart.

This was a quick read and I found myself up late at night to finish it. The kind of drama and love story that leaves you breathless and then sighing in contentment at the end.

I will definitely read more books by Daryl Devore.

Jenna Jaxon is a multi-published author of historical and contemporary romance.  She has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager.  A romantic herself, she has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise.  She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She lives in Virginia with her family and a small menagerie of pets.  When not reading or writing, she indulges her passion for the theatre, working with local theatres as a director.  She often feels she is directing her characters on their own private stage. First Excerpt for 2016 on WIP it Up Wendesday #wipitup

In the last post - we met Erika, the owner of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand. Two of her performers were rolling around on the floor, threatening top pullout hair extensions.  The book - ALMOST - has a title - there are ideas bouncing around 3 of my author friends. Also this book is DONE!! And now on to book 2 as it turned out this might be a mini series - 2 maybe 3 books.



Erik stifled an eye roll. "You queens are going to be the death of me."Sandee, dressed in a Cabaret showgirl costume, leaned closer and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. "You know we love you, Erika honey. You're one of us. Just one of the gals."She shook her head. "I'm surrounded by some hot males and you all do dresses and makeup a thousand times better than me and…" She flung her empty hand in the air. "I'm the only one with two X chromosomes." She glanced at her watch. "Show's in ten. Let's get a move on. Ra-chell. Shangri–Lay. You two good?"Ra-chell lifted her index finger and spoke as she turned toward the makeup mirror. "Girl, I am always good. Good is my middle name. I am the definition of good."Shangri–Lay brushed his long brilliant blue hair over his shoulder. "Well, little Miss Definition-of-good, you keep them fingers off my things or –"Erik lifted a hand. "No threats. Rule number one. Love each other."Ra-chell turned and gripped Shangri–Lay's crotch. "You heard the Boss Lady. Shangri–Lay gonna give Ra-chell some loving this evening?"Erik rubbed her forehead. "At each other's throats one second then in each other's pants the next. I can't keep up with you ladies."Giggles floated on the air as the performers drifted to their dressing areas to fix makeup and check costumes, leaving Erik standing alone holding an empty glass. She glanced at it. "Pretty much sums up my life.""Huh?" The stage manager cocked his head to the left.She shrugged, headed to her office, shutting the thick door and taking a moment to wallow in the silence her acoustically insulated office gave her. After plopping onto her desk chair, she pulled open her bottom left drawer and pulled out her prize possession, a bottle of twenty-year old Glenfiddich whiskey. A gift from her father when she assumed control of the club. His words of advice – Drink it wisely.She stroked her hand down the front of the bottle. The glass was cool against her fingertips. Being the owner/manager of a drag queen club had its share of up moments, but it sorely crushed her potential for a love life. She practically lived at the club and most of the patrons who visited were gay. Not leaving much of a dating pool for her to select from. For the first three or four months, she reveled in the solitude; however a girl gets itches, which need to be scratched.She opened the bottle and took a moment to let the fragrance fill her. Listening to the liquid splash against the glass was like hearing an angel sing. She lifted the glass to her lips and let the amber liquid burn its way down her throat. Warmth started in her belly and spread throughout her limbs. Fortified, she stood and returned to the din and glaring lights of the club.Having recovered from her hissy fit and tussle, Shangri–Lay strutted onto the stage in six-inch stilettos and a liquid black colored gown, slit to his…Erik shook her head… slit to her hip.So not fair. Look at the ass on that guy. I could sink my teeth into that and never let go. A tingle prickled between her legs. I'm fantasizing about a drag queen. I so have to find a guy.
