Mixed Media Playtime | 01

Add more paint.

That's my current mantra for a little mixed media play I've got going on over here at my house.

As a way to make this kind of play less "precious" (that feeling where it needs to be perfect or that there is even a perfect version to be made) I'm using a 2023 calendar that hung on my office wall all last year as the base. On top of each month I'm simply adding marks with paint, pencil, pens, stencils, etc.

Add more paint.

I add paint to the page. Sometimes I add to a layer and sometimes I cover it up. Sometimes I add more circles. There are a lot of circles simply because that's a shape I love.

Here's some of the pages I created so far:

I've got an Amazon Storefront set up with some of my mixed media basics like paper, paint, paint pens, etc. Check that out here.

Project Life® 2024 | Week 03

Welcome to Week 03 in my Project Life® series for 2024.

This past week we had two major things happening: (1) an ice storm and (2) a trip to Disneyland to celebrate Simon's 22nd birthday. As you'll see below I'm filling a lot of 3 inch x 4 inch pockets (2,
6 inch x 12 inch page protectors) to document the story of this adventure.

Let's dive to the video:

Here's a look at this week via images:

I started off this week by creating a set of journal cards using our
Alphas Are Awesome #10 Stamp Set and a rolling date stamp.

Still loving incorporating the POSCA Paint Pens into my journaling for those little pops of color.

When I got home from our trip a package of
Extravagant Hope from Brandi Kincaid was waiting for me. The "this year" card was included with that kit.

I'm using the recent stitched heart add ons as page-turners for the inserts this week (simply adhering them back to back). I added clear stickers and a couple other word phrase stickers on top of the pocket hearts.

On the back of the "this year" card I added a photo of Simon from Disneyland.

I added a handwritten "twenty two" for his age after I took photos.

I ended up using two
6 inch x 12 inch page protectors with the 3 inch x 4 inch pockets to hold a bunch of photos from our trip. Aaron and I took Simon and his roommate Grace down to Disneyland to celebrate Simon's birthday.

It was so easy to just print out a bunch of my photos to this size and slip them into the pockets. I added label stickers to the top of some of the photos.

On this trip we stayed at Paradise Pier and they had this cute art print in the room to take home.

Along the outside edge I added two of the stitched hearts back to back.

The square art print became a perfect home for a photo with longer journaling on top.

I'm still loving the combination of the longer printed journaling paired with the handwritten journal cards.

I also grabbed one other Paradise Pier card and added a 4 inch x 6 inch photo on the top and adding it in to my album with a piece of Grafix Plastic along the edge.

Two hearts back to back along the outside edge here too.

Keeping it simple with label stickers on top of some of my photos and quick handwritten journaling on top.

I love having a home for all these fun photos from this trip!

Keeping it loose + imperfect + getting those pockets filled!

Project Life® 2024 | Week 02

Welcome to Project Life® 2024 | Week 02.

If you missed my intro post to this project for 2024 go here. That post includes a free PDF download of the weekly cards.

A couple things to note about Week 02:

Repeated journal cards for the win! This is something I loved in previous years of this project and it's likely you'll see it a number of times over the course of this year. I love finding something to repeat: a product like these frames and chipboard numbers, stamps, embellishments, etc. It takes away some decisions and helps me focus on the words + photos.
Inserts! It's likely I'll add inserts from time to time throughout this project. I'll probably also bring in some full page photos like I did in the past with this project. Keeping it loose and seeing what each week invites me to include.

Here's a video overview of the week coming together:

Let's dive in to the images:

The first insert includes a story about some of my adventures with Betty and lives on top of the speed I put together using the Start Story Kit.

I created a flip-open page using a sheet of pattern vellum (from last year's Story Play collection) and a 3x8 pattern paper from the Explore Story Kit. I stitched those two pages together and added an old kraft pocket on top (I think that was from the Grow Story Kit). I tucked a journal card inside from the Start Story Kit with a "currently" stamp on top and added a chipboard from the Start Story Kit on the outside of the pocket with the date stamped on top.

Stamp is from the Currently Stamp Set (digital version available here). I stapled a tab sticker on the top.

And then I added another card from the Story Kit on the back. You could add a photo here or more journaling too.

In the video you can see how I created a flap from a sheet of scratch paper to make this page fold open and then covered pieces of the flap with washi tape on the inside and outside. On the inside I've got a 3x8 page that is from the Hobby Story Kit and a word phrase sticker from the January 2024 Stories By The Month kit.

This is the spread I'd already done for the Start Story Kit classroom. Love the background photo spread across both pages.

On the back of the "starting this" story I adhered a full page photo of the ice/snow in our backyard. I love that sometimes I can add things on the photo and other times I can just let them tell the story.

In addition to the photo enlargement I added in a 6x8 page protector with four pockets for more photos and a couple tags from the January 2024 Stories By The Month kit.

I added a little bit of grosgrain ribbon through the holes and stapled it in place.

I love how easy it is to add more photos if I want by simply adding in another page protector.

On the back of the tag I printed out some journaling on Maco Sticker Paper and added a word/phrase sticker on top.

Here's a look without inserts:

Pens used for my journaling this week include the Slick Writer, a brush pen, and a Micron

Ali's Project Life® Documenting Plans For 2024 + PL24 Week One

Last week on Instagram I shared the following:

Decision made: I’m in for weekly documenting in 2024 in a 9x12 album. I’m in for giving my little, everyday stories a home inside those pockets again. I’m in for not putting a lot of pressure on myself and just focusing on adding in photos + words that represent this season of my life (which is probably going to be a lot of Betty, outside adventures, volleyball tournaments, and other pieces of life with older kids). I’m in for keeping it loose and simple and just having fun filling in the pockets as I live from day to day. I’ll be using pieces from our @aliedwardsdesigninc Stories By The Month kit + pieces from the Story Kit + other past offerings in my stash (and some weeks might just be photos or just be words). I’ll be sharing on my blog + YouTube as I go.

As always, here’s your reminder to do what makes sense for YOU this year! Let’s cheer each other on whether we are telling stories in pockets or outside pockets, in binder albums or notebooks of any size, using a kit or using your stash or just using photos + stories scribbled on pieces of paper, participating in a particular project or doing something monthly, weekly, quarterly or once a year. If I’ve learned anything over all these years of documenting it’s that there truly isn’t a right or a wrong way to do any of this. Do what you can when you can + let’s all stop being so darn hard on ourselves thinking it has to be some version of perfect. Some years/months/days come with more physical/emotional /mental space and others are filled to the brim. Stories for the win in whatever way you are able to get some told this year.

After sharing that announcement I was super excited to get started documenting 2024!

And now that I've officially actually started my album I'm even more excited. This feels like the right choice for me this year!

KEEP IT LOOSE + IMPERFECT + JUST FILL THE POCKETS

One of my main goals with this project this year is to keep it loose. What does that actually mean? For me it means letting go of perfection and simply grabbing my pen and jotting things down on cards as I'm experiencing the week. It takes less than five minutes for me to grab a card and grab a pen and jot down a reflection, a memory, something overheard, etc. I'm looking to capture more "in the moment" pieces of life in these pockets. One of the ways I can set myself up for success with that is having cards already picked out to be homes for me stories for that week. Some weeks I'll use pre-made cards and other weeks I'll stamp on 3x4 pieces of cardstock to create my own cards.

I know, after years of being a memory keeper, that I won't always be able to do it this way so I'm truly giving myself permission to have it be imperfect and focus more on simply filling the pockets with words + photos. That's the ultimate goal: have an album filled with micro stories (and the occasional longer story) from my life.

Repeat after me: I WILL BE THE BOSS OF MY OWN PROJECT. I WILL BE THE BOSS OF MY SUPPLIES + NOT LET OVERWHELM KEEP ME FROM FILLING IN SOME POCKETS. I WILL NOT COMPARE MY STORIES WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S STORIES, RATHER I WILL LOOK FOR INSPIRATION TO GET MY OWN STORIES TOLD. I WILL HAVE FUN + WHEN IT'S NOT FUN I WILL RE-EVALUATE WAYS TO MAKE IT FUN!

A couple additional helpful links if you are curious about this project:

Let's dive in to my overview video:

INTRO PAGE

I shared an image on my IG post last week that was a work-in-progress intro page - here's where I ended up.

Right off the bat you might notice that it's just me + Betty on the intro page vs. images of all the people in my family. All is good here with no major family changes - I simply want to reflect the fact that this album is from my perspective. I'm the main character and my family members are all supporting characters in this story. My goal isn't to include everything that everyone is doing - and with all the people here that's never been possible or my intent - so I simply want to start it out that way.

For my 2024 intro page I'm using pieces from the January Stories By The Month™ kit - including three pieces of vellum. Two pieces of vellum are layered on top of each other ("bring on the new year" + the who, what, where, when) and the other is on the bottom (which is some of my mixed media that we turned into a pattern). On top of the vellum on the bottom I added a label from a past
One Little Word® Mini Kit and added my journaling on top using sticker paper (which I am loving big time). The 2024 card is from the Start Story Kit™. I had done the "24" card on the top first using some past vellum numbers and then I remembered we had a 2024 card in the kit and decided to keep both. I added the "this story" chipboard on top of the 24. I kept the thread tail after stitching just for fun (remember we are keeping this fun).

Want to see some previous intro pages? Check out 2019 here and this post has a couple of years all together in one post

WEEK 01

Right off the bat, here's your reminder to change the dial on your rolling date stamp. As you can see, I was still in 2023 mode when I stamped on these tags from the January Stories By The Month™ kit. I did go back in and re-stamp them + crossed out the incorrect one. It's all good!

I created some custom weekly cards for my project this year and have a free PDF download if you'd like to print them out and add them to your album.

Download the PDF of the 2024 weekly cards here.

I ended up using my
Silhouette and the Foil Quill pen to make these cards gold. You could also print these cards out using a laser printer and run them through a Minc machine to add gold foil on top. You also don't have to think about foiling them at all and just keep it simple + easy and print out the PDF!

For 2024 I'm going to be using
this style of page protector for all my weeks and will add inserts in-between when I have more stories I want to tell (these will often be pages I put together using pieces from the Story Kit™). Keeping the page protectors the same throughout the album eliminates a choice and I appreciate removing that from the things I have to think about each week. Remember - my goal isn't to include every single story from my week. It's simply an overview and an opportunity to capture some of the everyday pieces of life right now.

I'm using my
Epson PM400 for all the 4 inch x 6 inch and 3 inch x 4 inch photos. I'm going to print all my 4 inch x 6 inch photos with a white border and my 3 inch x 4 inch photos without a border.

On the back side of the two pieces of vellum I added a couple chipboard pieces from the
Start Story Kit™ using a Tiny Attacher Stapler

For this first week I'm using the January tags from the
January Stories By The Month™ kit as my repeated journal cards. I loved inviting myself to keep my journaling loose by using a brush pen for some short stories. I also added a date stamp on each one and grabbed some ribbon from my stash to add to the tags.

This year you'll often find me adding my Story Kit™ projects into this album. Using the
Start Story Kit™ pattern papers I created a home for a longer bit of journaling from this first week and attached the page into this album using a page attacher. Our 6 inch x 8 inch page protectors fit in the 9 inch x 12 inch album too.

On the back of the longer story I added another page I made using the Story Kit™ to detail the start of club volleyball for the girls.

I'm really so excited to be back in this project and looking forward to sharing here throughout the year! I'll be back soon with Week 02.

TAKING AN INSTAGRAM BREAK

I'll be taking an Instagram break through March 1, 2024. During that break I'll still be in all our classrooms and here on the blog sharing my Project Life® spreads. Please follow @aliedwardsdesigninc on IG for up-to-date details on projects, launches, etc. I'm looking forward to a social media reset and some travel with family after the busiest season of the year for me!

Join Us In The Classroom

Today our first Story Class of 2024 went live. The Story Class provides monthly themed educational content that acts as a spark to help you document and celebrate the stories of your life. Subscribers receive most of the designs found in the physical Story Kit™ and Story Stamp™ in the freedom of a digital format. In 2024 we're making some changes to our classroom. As in years past, Ali will continue her video presentation on the month's theme, her projects using the kit, and a full-color pdf handout. In addition to Ali's content, we have a variety of lessons from some very talented community contributors. We'd like to introduce you to our 2024 class contributors:

Story Planning + New Community Zoom | Linda Jordan

Linda Jordan lives in upstate New York with her cat, Pumpkin. She has one daughter, Summer, who is a college freshman. During the day, she's a full-time tax attorney, but in her free time she loves all things crafty and has been scrapbooking for 20+ years. Linda loves to create in project life, traditional layouts, mini albums, journals, and planners. In addition to paper crafting, Linda loves to cook/bake, organize, sew, read, hike and travel. This year she'll continue exploring all the fun ways to tell stories in her 6x8 albums using a hybrid pocket approach. Nolana hails from Trinidad and Tobago, where she met her Australian husband. They currently reside in Brisbane, Australia with their two year old son. She can be found here on Instagram or here on YouTube

Hi memory keeping friends! I’m Jennie Rey (you might know me as @therepie on Instagram), married to Michel and mother of Levi (25) and Mila (22). In this crazy life with our adventurous kids memory keeping is what keeps me sane, it helps me to find joy and put things in perspective. Hybrid scrapbooking is my absolute favorite, I love playing with the digital products in Photoshop and create all kinds of creative and interactive elements with them in a physical album. I am so excited to work with the Ali Edwards Team for another year and to connect with all of you in the classroom or on Instagram!

DECEMBER DAILY® PRODUCT PLAY | TRY THIS. December Daily® Product Play is all about ideas and inspiration for working with physical products from the December Daily® Collection. For 30 days in November, you'll receive one idea per day from the contributors to this class (includes Ali). 2023 DECEMBER DAILY® HYBRID PRODUCT PLAY. Hybrid scrapbooking combines digital products with physical supplies to create paper (or printed) memory-keeping projects. For this class, our contributors will share with fun, creative ideas and inspiration for working with these digital products from the 2023 December Daily® Collection.
