Rock 'N' Roll & Savage Cats
Hey, hey! So, it's been extremely hot and miserable, but writing has been hot and happening!
Two more of my stories were recently purchased: one for online magazine 4 Star Stories and the second for another Lovecraftian based anthology called City in the Ice from Alban Lake Publishing. A few edits are needed and then it's the waiting game. I'll post updates for their release dates. In the meantime, I have two stories already published with each of the aforementioned publishers. You can read the 4 Star Stories online for FREE! The Alban Lake books are available through their website.
Before I get to more of my writing, I want to say congrats to Jennifer Schubbe, who took over Books & Stuf in Mena. She is having her One-Year Anniversary as the new owner on July 31 & a Customer Appreciation Day-15% off your purchase.
I will also be doing a Book Signing at Chapters on Main in Van Buren from Noon-2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 2018.
The Rock 'N' Roll Space Novella Wings of Mercury is close to fruition. I've seen the Brad W. Foster's preliminary cover art & it looks freaking awesome. Brad's update to me is he is about to begin coloring the art. Once the cover is finished, the book will go to press. Imagine James Dean in space discovering Rock 'n' Roll.
The Savage Caged has been doing fairly well and there have been several requests for the next book. I have begun the writing process, translating David Martinez's comic book into prose. Turning 32 comic book pages into a novella or novel takes some research, leaps of faith, and the building of both the world and the characters around a plot that is already in place by the original artist/creator of The Savage Cat. After a couple of days of research to create a plausible backstory and fleshing out the main characters, I've managed to get to Chapter Three of the first draft. The goal is to have it out by Fall 2018. With any luck, even sooner so I'll have it for Archon. It's doubtful I'll have it in time for Fencon. Hopefully, Wings of Mercury will be available for both.
There's a couple of other projects in the works that will remain secret for the moment, including one which I am seeking an artist with a specific style for a twisted tale. Think art for a kid's book (Dick & Jane) with a very dark tone. Interested? Give me a yell.

June is Sizzlin'
It's been a weird year as far as the seasons and temperatures go, but it is undoubtedly hot now. June started off really hot for me, not only in regards to the temperature, but also with events and releases happening.
The book signing at Dog Ear Books went well. I sold a few books, saw some old friends from high school and a former college professor for the first time in nearly 30 years. Even people who didn't buy books kept me busy non-stop with questions about my writing or how to write. It was a very busy four hours and I met some very interesting people. I was there with another local author, Brandi Collins (who claims she's not a soccer mom, although she might be disguised as one) along with a string quartet that played everything from the Beatles' When I'm 64" to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing, and music from the scores of Chariots of Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean. This is the first time I've done a signing and had a band performing. I love music and this group entertained well.
One book I had mentioned that would be coming out was actually available the evening before, but I wasn't made aware of the fact until after the signing. The poetry collection Untimely Frost: Poetry Unthawed (Lycan Valley Press) is available for purchase. There are several poems in this collection. From the description:
The beauty and sadness of words clutches at the heart like the cold hand of Death. Images of darkness close in on us as we feel the anguish of life’s final moments. The darkness is beautiful and yet terrifying, calling on the strongest emotions for survival. This collection of poetry combines words of beauty, of despair, of darkness, of mortality that reach out and chill the soul like an Untimely Frost.
Next up is my appearance at SoonerCon. I've got some interesting panels, including one on smart-mouthed characters in the superhero movies and books. I'll be on this panel with a handful of authors who all have a quick wit, including publisher/author Selina Rosen of Yard Dog Press whom I have a few short stories and a zombie book The Undead Ate My Head. So that should be fun. I hope to see you at SoonerCon the weekend of June 22.
I'm doing some minor revisions and additions to the new novella . It should be available by the time I go to Fencon this year, but hopefully, it'll be ready even sooner when I do a book signing at Chapters on Main in Van Buren, August 18.

June Appearances & More
Long time, no read...or something like that. Spring has been a busy time as I prepare a new novella for release, hopefully by mid-summer at the latest.
Meanwhile, I will be making a couple of appearances, doing book signings, panels and such. First, I will be a part of the June Art Walk in Russellville, ARK. on June 1. I'll be appearing at Dog Ear Books.
My next public appearance (discounting my writing class at Books & Stuf) will be June 22-24 at SoonerCon in Midwest City, OKL.
For more information & locations check out my calendar at the bottom of my author page on Amazon.
Another story has been picked up by Alban Lake Publishing. This one is a strange sci-fi tale entitled "Space Marbles." I have no idea when the anthology it will appear in is due out, but I'll leave the title to your imagination for the time being.
Plenty more stories are in the works, but that's all the news for now. I hope to see you at the shows.

Spring 2018 Update
The first two conventions of the season are over for me. ConDFW went well, although Charlaine Harris didn't make the event due to reportedly having emergency gall bladder surgery. I've been there and done that, so I totally understand the pain she was probably in. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to interview her or participate on a panel with her some other time and I wish her well.
At MidSouthCon I had the honor of being on a monster panel with award-winning editor Ellen Datlow. I am not a fanboy, but it was nice to be on a panel with Datlow and also author Jimmy Gillentine. Datlow is someone whose work I have read for over 30 years. She was also the editor to send me my first rejection when I sent a poorly formatted story in dire need of revisions to Omni magazine 30 years ago. I still have that rejection somewhere, and I feel it's my Red Badge of Courage in a way. My bucket list includes being in an anthology either by Datlow or Toni Weisskopf.
When I returned from MidsouthCon, I discovered that my local bookstore, Books & Stuf (Mena, AR), honored me as the Local Author for Local Author of the Week.
Meanwhile, The Undead Ate My Head and Of Monsters & Madmen are both still selling decently. My new novella The Savage Caged has been moving really well. Besides the online options to purchase, the above-mentioned Books & Stuf carries those titles. The books are also available at Dog Ear Books (Russellville, AR) and Chapters on Main (Van Buren, AR).
Stay tuned for a possible book signing appearance at Dog Ear Books in June.
I will also be conducting the third and final Creative Writing Class April 6 for Books & Stuf. See their FB Page for details. At the very least, go in and meet Hemingway. Just be aware that the furry little prankster likes to untie your shoes and chew on the laces.
More updates of upcoming book releases coming soon. Now, back to writing.

ConDFW & Charlaine Harris
I was hoping that if I had the opportunity to attend ConDFW this year that I might be fortunate enough to be on a panel with Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) author (among other novels and series) Charlaine Harris. Luck was on my side. It turns out that my first panel on Friday will be moderating a panel on Converting Books to Film with Mrs. Harris and E. Gaston Huckabay, a friend of mine who has a new feature-length Star Trek animation called
The Paradise Makers
based off a manuscript he wrote.
I have a couple of more panels with Mrs. Harris, as well as some ad lib things where I get to take my turn in being satirical and doing some ad lib (think MST: 3000). I'll also have a reading, a table to sell my books and more. The schedule for each panelist is in alphabetical order after the main guests listings.
Hopefully, the new novella The Savage Caged will be delivered to me in time to have it for this show. And, though Of Monsters & Madmen and The Undead Ate My Head have been out since May 2017, this will be the debut of the books at ConDFW and the upcoming MidSouth Con.
That's all for now. If you're in Fort Worth this coming weekend, I hope to see you at the show. Come by and say hello.

The Savage Caged released
My newest offering,
The Savage Caged
is now officially available through iTunes. It should be available by the beginning of next week through Kindle. I'm awaiting my physical copy to check it over so it will be available in print, for those of you who enjoy a physical book in hand.
If you have the availability to read an iBook, a sample is available of the first chapter of The Savage Caged, which is Book 1 of The Savage Cat Adventures.
Señor Juan Dominguez is a powerful drug lord, operating in Northern Mexico, yet he desires to dominate all the drug cartels in the region. To do so, he must prove not only his military might, but also his show of power in the ring. When he discovers a hybrid beast man exists, he has Alex, The Savage Cat, and his girlfriend Jessica kidnapped.
To escape their prison, the couple will have to find a way to get past Dominguez’s armed soldiers, outsmart a temperamental henchman with an itchy trigger finger, and use animal magnetism to confront the hot and saucy Carolina, who is daddy’s one and only dangerous little girl with a thirst for men.
The Savage Cat’s best chance is a battle to the death!

Creative Writing Class & Award
2018 has arrived, cold and bitter, but I've been locked away indoors working on the finishing touches of a new novella, which should be available by February. Entitled The Savage Caged, it is Book 1 of The Savage Cat Adventures. I'll have more details about the book when it drops. You can read a free preview of the opening chapter here. Please rate the preview and, if you have 30 seconds, answer the quick (and anonymous) survey.
My certificate for Honorable Mention from L. Ron Hubbard's Writer's of the Future Contest arrived in the mail this week. Looks nice. Perhaps another story will garner a higher position in the competition.
Another story, "The Son of Caddaja," has been accepted by Alban Lake Publishing. The story is peppered with historical facts dealing with the Caddo Indians and the Trail of Tears. They encounter an ancient evil once they make it through the Arkansaw Territory and into Indian Territory. More details on this story, as well, when it gets closer to time for publication.
No idea of a release date, but my poem "Death Rides by a Comanche Moon" is due out in Untimely Frost . Keep an eye out here or on Lycan Valley's FB page for details.
More stories and a novel are in the works, but it's also time to start gearing up for Con Season. Check out my Events Calendar (bottom of the Amazon page) for more details of my February and, possibly, March (2018) appearances.
Before that, I will be giving a FREE Creative Writing Class at the Polk County Library (Mena, AR). The class is sponsored, in part, by Books & Stuf. The class is Friday, January 26, 2018 @ 6:00 p.m. The class will focus on helping both writers and potential writers tap their creativity in designing and building characters, plots, and worlds. I'll also explain how to find outlets to get published. The class will be at least one hour in length, possibly longer--depending on when they kick us out. So, whether you've been published or not, if you are interested, bring something to take a few notes on, bring business cards, & bring your thinking cap.

December update
It's almost the end of the year. At times, it seemed to have gone too fast and I definitely didn't get as much accomplished as I would like. Then again, I am the type that climbs a peak and am immediately seeking the next highest peak to clamber up.
Lycan Valley Press notified me that they are behind on releasing a couple of poetry books that I will be in. They state one of the books is still due out before the end of 2017. I don't recall which book it will be or which poem, but they will be publishing my poems "Torture of a Pirate" and "Death by Comanche Moon" sometime soon, hopefully.
Battlefield Press International is still working on the anthology Sisterhood of the Blade, which will include my story "Perilous Road" alongside other well-known authors, including Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Ed Greenwood. You can read an excerpt of his story "https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/.... I'm not certain when this books due out, but hopefully by spring 2018.
The Savage Caged is going through its final revisions and awaiting the final cover artwork. The novella is based on a comic book character created by my buddy David Martinez. Stay tuned for the release, hopefully within the next couple of weeks. Here's a look at some Savage Cat art--although it's not the art for the new novella.
I'm also awaiting art for two other novellas. Martinez is working on one of the pieces-- an new detective mystery series I am writing called SaMax. The other is a fun sci-fi novella.
And, to change things up--I'm seeking beta readers for a crime story (11,300 words), as well as an artist that can paint to do the cover art. It should be a relatively short and easy read, about 30 minutes of your time. If interested, send me a message.
Back to working on a Norse mythology tale. Have a good holiday--and if the weather gets rough, kick back and read a book.

New Award, New Book and other News
Now that my seasonal job has ended, I have spent hours upon hours at the keyboard, updating, revising and editing several short stories before searching for potential publications to submit to, writing the cover letters, etc. Some are stories that have been rejected and I simply haven't had the time to send back out. Other stories are new and have never been submitted before. Over a two-day period, I submitted 19 stories after taking the time to look over each one with a somewhat fresh set of eyes. The stories totaled nearly 80,000 words. It looks as though a couple may have already sold. Plus, one of the publishers has requested more work from me, so I'm currently researching material for a new story. Always nice to be wanted.
In other mildly interesting news, I received notice that my fantasy tale, "Fiery Fairy Tempered," received Honorable Mention from the Writers of the Future Contest. I call it mildly interesting since I didn't win 1st, 2nd or 3rd, which includes publication in their annual collection and a little chunk of change. I will be receiving a certificate instead. Still, I guess Honorable Mention beats nothing at all or a rejection. Perhaps it will help sell the story when I submit it later today.
Lycan Valley Press is the publisher that recently accepted two of my poems for two different poetry anthologies. They intended to have Darkling's Beasts and Brews out by Halloween but have since pushed the publication date back, hopefully, to some time this year. It will include my poem "Torture of a Pirate."
The Mad Visions of Al-Hazred did make it out the day after Halloween! It is currently available at the Alban Lake Store or through Smashwords. Other sellers (i.e. Amazon, Barnes & Noble online, etc.) should have links up soon. My advice, be kind to the author and publisher--buy it directly from them and cut the middleman.
I have also been discussing a free writing workshop for one night only at Books & Stuf in Mena sometime in January or February 2018. They have a sign-up sheet at the store and they are planning on posting information on their Facebook page to monitor interest to see what size facility we will need for this one-time Free event. This creative writing workshop is to answer questions on getting published, creating worlds & characters and other how-to subjects. It will not be how to use punctuation, grammar or whether you should use the interrobang to show you have an out-of-this-world question. The answer is "No!".
Much, much more is happening, but I'm too busy laying out a new novella when I'm not taking a break to do research, mailing out signed copies of The Undead Ate My Head or Of Monsters & Madmen (or doing housework).

Add Another Bookstore
I visited a relatively new bookstore this past weekend, one which I have been wanting to visit all summer and just never had the time to drive to the city of Russellville, Arkansas. The store is in old downtown--a building that was once a clothing store, a music store (Sound Investments) I regularly visited as a teenager, and a record store called The Electric Moo that was run by Dan and Marci that I also used to hang at and purchase LPs back in the day.
Now, Dog Ear Books resides in the building and it is a wonderful bookstore that's both clean and spacious. They have an area for author signings, readings and even an open mic night. I spoke with a couple of people there, including Pat Young and another local author. Unfortunately, I don't recall her name at the moment.
Dog Ear Books is now one more place where you can pick up The Undead Ate My Head and Of Monsters & Madmen.
Beyond that, two novellas have the cover art being worked on, I signed another contract for another anthology, and The Mad Visions of al-Hazred (Alban Lake Publishing) anthology is due out in 10 days. (Nov. 1, 2017). The book will contain my short story "Dark Messiah" for my version of what drove al-Hazred mad and prompted him to write what would become The Necronomicon. Lovecraft fans should love this new anthology.
