Wolverine: Logan...
Here's another quick head sketch from Heroes Con. Done on a X-Force blank. I do these head and bust sketches at a show, I typically try and incorporate something about their power or character. In this case they asked specifically for Logan's casual look, which I've never drawn before. Fun to do. I did a signing over at the SCAD booth, my alma mater, during the show. Great group of professors there representing the school and my good friends. If you're at a con with SCAD set up, swing by for free anthology comics and get portfolio reviews there if you're looking to break into comics. You never know which alumni might be signing, and the professor's give amazing critiques!

Hulk....
Here's an Incredible Hulk sketch from Heroes Con, 9x12 ink on bristol board. As it turned out I had this one already laid out in pencil before the show. Just done as a prelim sketch. I figured someone would ask for a Hulk eventually and sure enough, first thing in Charlotte I got a Hulk request. I'd like to call it planning ahead, but we all know I'm not organized enough for that...so we'll settle on dumb luck.

Captain America: Steve Rogers....
This is just a quick post today. Head and shoulder sketch from Heroes Con. I did some marker rendering around the character after I scanned it, but here is the line art.

9-11 Avengers....
This was a special commission I got to do for a NYFD Fireman. He's part of the 343 Fire house and was involved in the terrorist attacks in NY on 9-11. He wrote me a very personal letter, talking about his experiences on the day and his group of guys at the firehouse. It amazes me that this happened nearly 12 years ago already.
I adjusted the number of the issue to reflect his firehouse, and did my best to capture a moment from that tragic day. I'm not out to make any political statements, or call attention to issues. This is just about a man who lost some of his friends that day. My heart goes out to anyone that lost somebody, and especially the heroes involved in the emergency and rescue operations. This is for them.

Black Panther.....
This was a fun quick Black Panther sketch I did on a jam piece. Usually when collectors do a jam piece it's a group of characters all together interracting, or it's a gridded off art board with little squares all the same size. Then they have various artists draw in little head sketches of their themed jam piece.
In this case it was an Avengers Jam, and there were boxes drawn out, but they were all various sizes and shapes! I loved it and thought it was a great idea. The result was a jam that looked like a comic page itself, kind of like a montage of the Avengers Assembling. I got to pick my square/panel and which ever character I wanted.
I've always been a Black Panther fan, and this was a blast to do and didn't take terribly long. I love seeing new ideas from people at shows on how to showcase art!

Spidey head sketch...
Quick Spiderman head sketch from Heroes Con. I'm not good at doing quick sketches, but Spidey lends himself well to a quick head sketch drawing. This is like a 15 min or less drawing I think shown here about full size.

Batman and Robin finished inks...
Quick post today, I'm trying to catch up on my blog posts, and I'm obviously waaaay behind. I do have all the art to fill these days, it's just been a mad dash to get my projects done. So I'm taking a bit of time to try and keep this blog thing up to date.
This was a convention sketch I started back in Seattle this last spring for the Emerald City Comic Con. I wanted to finish it up and the same guy was at Heroes Con, so luckily I had the chance to complete the inks on this.

Dr. Midnite....
Here was another commission completed at Heroes Con, These last few (Dusty and Covergirl, Avengers, Beachhead) were for people that have waited and have been incredibly patient with me to get these done. I still have a few more to get through, and as always I do my best to make it worth your wait if you've been on my list for awhile now.
I've had to change up how I handle commissions and convention sketches/commissions these last few months. Before my workload got so crazy I could handle my full list at the show, with maybe 1 or 2 that still needed done. I had a list of commission requests on the side and I'd be able to fit them in during the break between comic issues or on a day when I needed a break from a page. It was all casual and worked out great for 4-5 years early on in my career.
In the last 2 years I've simply had more work than I can do, day in and day out. With a freelance type of job, it's near impossible to know what my schedule will be like a month from now, sometimes even a week, or even the next day. So, good problem to have, and I'm not complaining, but an unforeseen consequence, it did mean that I had to put my commissions on hold while I got the deadline work done.
Now, my commission list is officially closed and has been until I catch up on this backlist of commissions to do. I no longer take home sketches from shows that aren't done at the show unless it's understood that it will feed into my regular commission list and will probably take a while to finish.
I always go home with the intention of getting it done the next week. Sometimes I do. But more often than not lately, work piles up while I'm gone and I get stuck back into the deadline grind before I can turn them around.
It's been a learning experience the last 1-2 years and I've finally got a handle on what my limits are with this new status quo. I appreciate all the requests, and wish I could get to them all. But that's just not realistic with my schedule. My plan is to work through all these I have at the moment, then as soon as Im done, I'll open my list up to 5 spots. As soon as those are filled, it will close until those are done.
I'll be having my art dealer handle the entire transaction. Mike Alexander, MGA deals, will be handling my original art sales and commissions from now on. He knows me, knows my schedule and that will ensure a better turn around time from when the commission is taken.
This has been on my mind a lot lately, and this seems like the best place to clear the air and make sure everyone knows how I need and want to move forward with my commissions. Thanks again for everyone that's been so supportive and has been following my work over the years.
Finally, now back to the actual sketch I did at Heroes Con of Dr. Midnite! DC Comics character and a foundational member of the JSA!

Wonder Woman Kingdom Come...
Here was the last sketch I was able to get to at Heroes Con. I have more to post, but I mean on the day, I was doing my best to make sure this got done by the end of the show.
This young lady asked for a Wonder Woman commission from the graphic novel Kingdom Come. A fantastic self contained DC Universe story. Beautifully painted pages by Alex Ross and a fresh new take on the characters and costume designs. A must read for DC Comics fans.
Instock Trades for 45% off!
So I did the preliminary sketch and realized right as I was about to ink it that Wonder Woman has 2 costumes in that book. A variation of her regular costume, and an elaborate armored version. I thought I better ask the lady before I ink it. I finally got to talk to her on the last day of the show, and she wanted the armored version!!! I quickly made the revisions on the pencils and was franticly inking this more detailed costume to make sure it was done. My wife was sitting beside me cheering me on, because she really wanted this girl to get her commission done in time.
Here's the end result and a fun commission to end the day on!
