GI JOE Con commission...
This was a past due commission for someone, and they happened to be at the recent GI JOE con as well. So finally I was able to get this done and to the guy. There are quite a few of you waiting on commissions from me that check out my blog regularly. Thanks, as always, for being so patient. I'm steadily working my way through these. Luckily my schedule isn't bogged down with a regular comic deadline and I'm able to make more progress than I had hoped. I will be able to get to everyone on my list, and hopefully in the next few weeks.
If you have a commission with me, just keep an eye on the blog as I will post up sketch updates, and progress images. If you dont want to see your commission until it's done and you open it in the mail, please let me know and I will wait to post it on my blog until you've received it.
This commission was a very personal request of the person's favorite characters. I think it would actually make for a pretty cool one-shot comic as well. Also an interesting choice for which version of Snake Eyes to use. This costume for him was steeped in 90's design and aesthetics. This was the first time I've drawn the version 4 of the Snake Eyes toys. Fun to do for sure!

GI JOE con sketch cards cont...
Here is the next one I was able to get done the last day of the GI JOE Convention in Indanapolis a couple of weeks ago. Tunnel Rat is quickly becoming one of my favorite Joe characters to draw. He just has a lot of details that are different from the regular soldier look.
Tunnel Rat Sketch Card - 494
I would have had Larry Hama come and pose for this shot, but he was busy signing autographs.

Just a quick post, I'll have a few more of these to put up. I figure it's a good way to catch up on my "daily" blog. I have quite a few things to post, but it's been tough getting the time set aside to do it.

GI JOE con sketch cards...
I was able to attend the GI JOE con in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago. The convention ran some sketch cards, unfortunately it wasn't highly promoted. I think a lot of attendees and even some staff didn't realize that I was going to be there. So it wasnt until the last day that people starting coming to my table asking if I could draw on their blank cards. I was the only artist that set up at the convention. So I was able to get a few done at the show and take a couple back with me to do as warm ups for the day.
I haven't drawn any sketch cards previous to this that I can recall. It's interesting because you only have 2-3 inches to do a drawing of a character. Tiny nibbed pens come in handy.

Storm Shadow colored...
This was a sketch done at the Emerald City Comic Con last month in Seattle. Simon took a pass on the colors for me. This version of Storm Shadow I designed and the new Cobra Commander are hands down my favorite. I actually never had the chance to draw either that much in the comic, just mostly on covers.

Atomic Robo vs. Dr. Dinosaur!!!
This was a commission I did awhile back and had Simon color it up for me. I've loved this book since it first started coming out. Early on in my blog I did a contest to create a caption for a previous Atomic Robo drawing, that was a lot of fun!
After that contest I got this commission to draw and seeing it in color really makes it come to life. When you get to draw an atomic powered robot punching a dinosaur with goggles, a spatula and a cooler strapped to his back....you know it's a good day!

Joker Colored...
This was a commission I finished last summer for Mike, who runs the Canadian GI JOE convention in Toronto. I've got Simon Gough to throw some amazing colors on it and wanted to share what's come from another collaboration between the two of us.

Waaaaaay creepy when it's colored. Just sayin'

More SuperHero figure templates
I've posted more of these recently. Due to a project I'm working on here are a few more. I need to do a variety of costume designs for a new character and this saves me time in redrawing the whole figure over and over. I can just add the cosmetic details of the uniform, hairstyle, and any props/weapons.
Also, a convention in St. Louis called Project Comic Con is doing a great "Create your own Super hero" activity for kids this year. The night before the con there will be a family oriented get together and kids will have a contest to create a new superhero. Winners of the contest will have their character drawn out by professional artists, including myself!
Jeff Morris, the convention owner and show runner, graciously asked to use my templates for the activity and I was happy to see them put to such good use! Here is more info on the convention, and you can follow the con on Facebook as well.

As always, please feel free to use these templates as you like. They are for public use and you do not need to ask my permission to use them. If you use them for an organization or public activity, I would love to hear about it and how the activity went. If you would like suggestions on ways I've used them for children's creative writing assignments and seminars please email me and I can share with you what worksheets and materials I've put together.
Here are the Create-A-Hero worksheets from Project comic con.

Ultimate Spiderman Breakdowns
This is the "breakdown" stage. I basically take the layout I did at 3inches by 4 inches and enlarge it through a print out. I lightbox or trace off that layout onto the full size 11x17. You can see I made a few changes in spaces and added Sandman into the very background since I had more room at the top now.
Still need to put in details and especially shading for light sources. But from this point on it's mostly just finished rendering on the pencils, then onto the inks.
