Storm Shadow strikes again!...

I think it's obvious to say that GI JOE has been a HUGE part of my career, and a property that I'm passionate about. It was a big part of my childhood, and now luckily an even bigger part of my day to day life.
It is always a blast going to conventions around the country, because inevitably Joe fans from all over find their way over to my table and we get to talk about GI Joe all day long. Some are fans that followed the IDW published comic books, and some just catch a glimpse of my banner set up behind me with Snake Eyes on it, and that's enough for them to stop and chat.
I just want to say Thanks! to all those Joe fans that make it out to the shows and meet with me. This sketch was done for a guy out at the Emerald City Comic Con last weekend that was a big Storm Shadow fan, and happened to like the redesign I did for IDW. I've posted a lot about Storm Shadow already, so I wont go on and on about how cool he is... Instead I'll just post links of the numerous times I ramble on about his coolness.

Booster and Skeets...

This was another sketch from the Emerald City Comic Con I did in someone's sketchbook. I actually flipped the drawing in photoshop from the original. Just to see how it looked coming from the other direction. Fun to do, I really like this character.
I think I mentioned in a previous post where I did a Booster sketch, my first introduction to this character was in the Death of Superman event. Doomsday was kicking the trash out of the Justice League and threw Booster miles away through the atmosphere. Then BAM! Splash page of Superman grabbing Booster out of the air. This page had a huge impact on me artistically as a kid. The pose and style of drawing just really sunk in. I went back later and learned more about the character and liked him even more.
His spotlight episode in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon was hilarious! I've seen it a dozen times at least!

Amazing Spiderman...after McFarlane!

Here was another sketch cover from back at the NYCC comic con. This was a specific request to draw this cover like the now classic Todd McFarlane Spiderman cover. Drawing and recreation cover isn't always the most creatively fulfilling commission, but this is such an iconic image, it was still a very fun commission to do. The crazy thing is when you compare this to the original, I didn't draw NEARLY as many webs in the background as McFarlane did. But of course he was drawing it at 11x17 and I was drawing it on a 6x10 comic cover. It was cool to see when it was all done.

Amazing Spider-man (McFarlane cover recreation) - 464
I even did the little spidey in the upper left hand corner hanging down. My scan got cropped off a bit which is why you don't see his whole hand and the box in the bottom left. It's all there on the sketch.

GI Joe Awesome...

Usually at least once per convention I'm asked to do an unusual sketch. I don't take any commissions I find too violent or "racey", basically anything that would make me uncomfortable to draw. But I still get the occasional odd ball sketch request.

In this situation it was basically GI JOE's Flint giving Shipwreck a high-5, heh. I wasn't sure how to approach it but just to go all cheese! The request was specific that Polly, Shipwreck's parrot, NEEDED to be in the sketch. So this was the end result done in the guy's convention sketchbook.

High 5 GI JOE style - 463

Now that I'm posting it, I just remembered I was going to draw a bunch of chest hair on Shipwreck...I think I can live without having done that actually.

Power Principle inks...

The next step on the cover for Power Principle #4. Inks by Juan Castro over my fairly rough pencils. He did a bang up job on it! I had only inked the lines of the background and I just realized I simply didn't have the time to be able to get it all done. Luckily, Juan was available and could squeeze it into his own busy schedule.

Next up Colors by Simon Gough (of course, who else?)

Power Principle Cover...

Here is a cover I worked up for a book called Power Principle by a good friend Alan White. Some of you might know him by "NewMutant" on twitter and other message boards. He's a great guy and has always supported my work and more importantly laughed at my jokes.

He successfully funded a creator-owned book to be produced and digitally published this last year. This cover is for his book, issue #4. With this being a cover, it's story specific, and he had just given me a description of the characters and what he'd like on the cover. Mostly about the main character protecting him and his daughter from this creepy tentacled monster. I'm looking forward to reading the issue and finding out what this was all about.

I had meant to ink it myself, which is why I kept the finished pencils so loose. I'll often work out the exact finishing details in the inking stage. However, with my current work load, that was looking to be impossible with the time I have available. Luckily, I know and have worked with a great inker, Juan Castro on Snake Eyes this last year. He was able to fit it this cover and I certainly trusted him well enough to ink over my "rough" pencils.

So here are the pencils for the cover, I'll post the inks by Juan Castro and colors by Simon Gough just after this.

Elders of the RuneStone Cover #2

Lately I've been finishing up deadlines on the Marvel Castle books. In between issues I'm squeezing in as many overdue side-projects and commissions as possible. One of those is the cover to RuneStone #2. This is a co-created series I've been a part of with writer Quinn Johnson (TMNT, Kung Fu Panda).

Ever since we were successfully funded through Kickstarter, we've been working away at the first 4 issue arc. Issue 2 is completely and will be made available very soon digitally through Artist Alley Comics You can go there now and get issue #0 for free, and the 36 page issue #1 for just $.99!

For this first arc, we're just looking to produce covers that spotlight the characters and their powers. Here is Gar (a.k.a Scott, the lead character) and Hardtap (a.k.a. Jenny, his best friend) For more info on the project you can check out these previous posts here on my blog.
