How to write dialogue (rather, how I write dialogue)

Writing dialogue or conversations in general has always been easier for me than writing prose. While I love prose, especially that of Jane Austen or of Betty Smith, there is nothing quite like hearing characters be themselves. I seem to write much, but many people ask me how I do it. I really have only one "secret" for this:

Listen.

Listen to everyone and everything. Listen for colloquialisms, mannerisms, inflections, etc. Some of the best conversations I have ever heard came from two people ye...

Story for the Day: The Marked Attendant

Hinnia, like Anelta, is a Marked of Thellis. Here is a piece of Lamir's first evening with her. Enjoy.

The Marked Attendant                 It had been a day of trials for Lamir: the early morning spent disciplining a footman he had so longed to receive, the midday passed in heated contempt for the errant Thellisian prince planning to impose upon the borders he had so meticulously preserved, the afternoon expended in the royal assembly being forced to officiate and delegate the stipulations ...

Lamir and Hinnia

Prince Lamir Elladrin has an attendant he very much adores. Here is a small piece from book 11 to tide you over until the story of the day is posted:

He could bear the separation no longer. Soon he would be forced to be parted from her while attending the garrison for a ceremony which required his attention at noon and here he had spent the chief of the morning without her when he had been used to pass the morning hours performing simple administrative duties in the quietness of his room...

Wall Street Journal's Decided Comments on Romance and YALit

Well.

Rautu says READ.I'm certain some of you have seen the Wall Street Journal article about romance books making women leave their husbands and YaLit making children into murderers. As a romance and fantasy writer, I had a good laughed about it. Many people, however, did not feel the same. Many readers became enraged, and rightfully so, but as an author who writes in both genres and who grew up reading both genres, I will share my feelings about the article.

1) As a honour roll student, I wil...

Kai Linaa meets Prince Lamir Elladrin of Lucentia

A moment from book 11.

After agonizing over having nothing suitable to wear, Kai Linaa was told it was time to pay her visit to Prince Lamir. She said her worrisome goodbyes to her family, telling them to give Leraa her few possessions and unfinished portraits should she not return, kiss her mate, embraced her father, and set out for her first and possibly last journey to the palace. She asked numerous questions, all of them in a quick and successive tenor, and all of them regarding the...

Story for the Day: Ladrei's Lamentation

Still working on major story line for book 11 concerning Lucentia. Here is a small exerpt.

Once they had gone and the sound of their door locking echoed through the vacant main hall, Ladrei went to the bar to pour himself a small tumbler of licorice wine to help him recollect himself. Such events were the usual order of the day: a public but harmless terrorization, a private torture session, a ruthless interrogation, a collection of debts, and perhaps an assassination if there was occasion f...

Story for the Day: Coconut

Today, Rautu's world imploded.
Coconut                  After the commander and Den Asaan used their repose from the Lucentian courts to visit the afamed cafe district, they sat at the grand fountain at the centre of the capital to enjoy the cooling mists bushing against the stone basin where the commander was content to be immobile in the dry, festering heat and where the Den Asaan was equally pleased to take inventory of the numerous deserts he had collected. It was too warm for custard, ...

Story for the Day: Vondeva's

Vondeva's is the most talked of place in Lucentia. Here is what it looks like:
The grand entrance of Vondeva's at the end of the lane was soon presented them and it recommended everything that the most preferred and most exclusive culinary enterprise in the Lucentian capital should aspire to be: a long, red velvet rug lined the avenue toward the opened black marble doors, gold fringe ornamented the awning and lintel trimmings, a set of stone fountains carved with the likeness of shapely...
