IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR...

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!!
The time to BOUNCE! The time to BoP! The time to celebrate all things MISFIT!!!
That day when we show our love for Charlotte “Charlie” Gage-Radcliffe, the Batgirl-loving, wants-to-grow-up-to-be-Huntress, video-gaming, enthusiastic teen hero of Gotham.
And how do we do that?
By sharing our stories, our art, our crafts and cosplays of Charlie.
All day Thursday the 7th of April, I will be posting and reblogging all the Misfit-y-goodness I can find, including my own art pieces (commissions) from previous years.
Want to join the celebration? (Hint: the answer is ‘Yes!’)
There are two (easy) ways - you can send submissions directly to me, OR use the #MisfitDay/Misfit Day tag (although, in all honesty, I have maybe 15% faith in Tumblr’s tagging system right now…).
It’s that simple. Love our girl Charlie? Tell the world and celebrate Misfit Day with us on the 7th.
And let’s make her ‘mom’, Gail Simone, proud!
Questions? Feel free to ask.
I hope to see you there!
(For inspiration/ideas, definitely peruse the #MisfitDay tag and see what others have shared over the years.)

TODAY IS THE DAY!!!!!
Remember to tag your posts with ‘Misfit Day’. (Feel free to send a back up message to me if you don’t see your posts/submission.)
I’ll start posting all the Charlie goodness around 8 AM EST, including reblogs from previous years.
I have So. Many. Drafts. ready to go - can’t wait to share the day with you!!!
This is the best thing ever!
MISFIT DAY!
Thank you to Happy Sorceress for making this happen! Please join in and reblog your favorite MISFIT sets…spread the word!

So tomorrow is Misfit Appreciation Day, where we...

So tomorrow is Misfit Appreciation Day, where we create a bunch of creative works for the DC character Misfit. For those that don’t know who MIsfit is, she’s a fun and happy teleporting girl from DC’s book Birds of Prey, created by Gail Simone. The last few years, I’ve joined in on this, making period inspired faux covers for her. And I’ve had a bit of a narrative going on with my contributions. A few people have caught on, but I thought I’d lay it all out for y'all, an repost the covers done so far. :)
So the idea is that when the Flashpoint happened, and the DC Universe was shifting into it’s current incarnation, Misfit was teleporting (or bouncing) at the exact same time, and ended up getting hurtled through space and time, as seen in Cover #1. So she’s been attempting to bounce her way back home, decade by decade.
She landed in the Golden Age of the 1940s with Cover #2. And then encountered the Man-Bat in the 1950s in the EC Comics themed Refrigerator of Secrets Cover #3, and then into the trippy 1960s fighting super-spies in the Jim Steranko inspired Cover #4.
So tomorrow, we bounce to the 1970s AND 1980s…
And yes, I got this planned up all the way to her birth decade of the 2010s. I am REAAALLLY looking forward to the 1990s. :)
WOW! Gorgeous!
You drew this? This is SPOT-ON! I would write this in a heartbeat!
I'm sorry if you've been asked this before, but why did you choose to bring in Huntress when you started Birds of Prey? I can think of a dozen different reasons, but I'd like to hear straight from the horses mouth
Not the loveliest metaphor…;)
Okay, let me think. I remember a lot of people thought it was because DC or Warners wanted the comic to match the show more closely. That is actually the opposite of what happened.
The show was not beloved by Warners OR DC. It had potential, it could have been great, the cast was great, but there was constant interference, I believe by the network, and it came out a bit of a mess and was quickly canceled.
DC did NOT want to affiliate with the show more. It was already canceled, and DC was going to cancel the comic as well. There was NO pressure to add Huntress.
But I felt there was a narrative problem. If you read the early issues, they are so cleverly constructed that you don’t really notice that there are ENDLESS panels of just Oracle and Canary chatting back and forth wirelessly, without ever being face-to-face. I felt that having so much page space be taken up with that every issue could get a bit dull and repetitive, even with two great lead characters. In short, I felt Canary needed someone to talk to in the moment, someone to disagree with, someone to protect and be protected by, and we also needed someone to vex Oracle by being more willful and independent. Huntress fit that bill perfectly.
So it was 100% my request.
Every once in a while, someone complains about how Oracle and Canary treated Huntress in the first couple issues. All I can say is, yes, yes, they obviously did. This is what happens in the real world, you don’t automatically start with complete trust, kindness and respect. Often, you start off shaky and rocky. Even smart, kind people rush to judgment.
Because relationships have an arc, especially in serial fiction. It’s amazing to me that anyone needs this explained (yes, THIS happened, and THIS was the result, and now THIS is the situation) but it does come up once in a while.
My thing with BOP was I wanted a team of women, of buddy cops, who would, WITHOUT QUESTION, lay down their lives for each other. And I feel that that is what made the book a success. But first, they HAD to get to know each other, they all made mistakes. That’s human. If you don’t mess up, if you have nothing to overcome, all the smiles and hugs in the world have no real depth of emotion or meaning.
Anyway, I love what she added to Bop and I think it was powerful enough that it changed the dynamic of what Bop MEANS to people. When the new52 version came out, and it WASN’T Dinah, Barbara and Helena, it just never felt like Bop. And even now, they are trying to recreate that trinity, and I’m glad.
That’s how it happened!
If you ever write Steph and Cass again please make them kiss and date
I could totally see that.
WYNONNA EARP, YOU GUYS
So, Wynonna Earp.
Here’s the deal. Many of you know, despite being an expert on ARROW, that I don’t watch episodic television. It’s not because I’m a snob or because TV sucks, it’s just a thing. I didn’t grow up with television (we lived on a very remote farm) and I don’t have the patience to binge watch (I get bored) and my schedule is such that keeping up with a weekly series, even with a dvr, is more trouble than it’s worth.
But this is different. First, I love the comic. It’s written by a guy who was a HUGE inspiration to me, and still is. I think he’s one of the most underrated writers in comics. He never writes a book that is less than true and filled with velocity, and that is always something I wanted to capture with my own writing. He also does something I quite like that I love in my own characters, he makes them unapologetic for being outsiders, for being different, for doing what needs to be done, no matter the cost.
And he was never afraid to put a bit of sauciness and wit in comics at a time when those things were not really welcome in any way an adult reader could enjoy. It was all a very grim business, but Beau Smith always went his own way and I always felt some kinship with him about that. There’s some Beau Smith in my Birds of Prey, especially. When I added Lady Blackhawk, it was because I missed her from reading her in Beau’s WARRIOR comic.
Since I started writing comics, a million experts have offered endless advice on what I SHOULD write and what I SHOULD do with my career and how I SHOULD respond to negativity or whatever. It is with no small amount of amusement that I seem to have outlasted all of them, doing things the way I felt best. I went my way, and any mistakes I made are 100% my own, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I got knocked down or fell, I learned, I got back up, came back twice as hard, but still happy for the challenge.
Beau Smith always writes characters who do that, they get knocked down, no one believes in them, they get misjudged and mislabeled, and they keep walking anyway, and that’s why I never fail to enjoy his books. Smart and ornery and full of honey and vinegar. I love ‘em.
In my entire career, there have only been a tiny handful of creators whose work meant so much to me that I was actually very timid about meeting them. Imagine my delight when they all turned out to be kind and wonderful! George Perez, Steve Gerber, Joe Kubert, Jose Garcia Lopez…a very few more. They are great and they treat others great and that’s been very joyful to discover.
Beau was the last name on that list for me to meet and I was nervous, it was at a small convention, my hubby actually went over to tell Beau I would come to his table and that I was nervous about it, so Beau took it upon himself to come to MY table so I wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable, and a more gracious, kind and hospitable guy you will never meet. It was the best day.
Now Beau has a series on SyFy based on his awesome book, Wynonna Earp, and because it’s Beau, I HAD to break my rule and watch it.
And I absolutely loved it. Wynonna is a Beau Smith heroine through and through. No one trusts her, they think she’s broken, she does what needs to be done anyway. The actress is fantastic, the writing’s whip smart, and there’s no character quite like her on television that I’m aware of. I LOVED the pilot, and the show’s writer informs me that each episode gets better and better.
In short, I’m hooked. I want a Peacemaker like Wynonna carries. I want to know more about the Earp family and why a certain famous gunfighter is hanging around in 2016. It could have been generic, instead it’s fantastic.
I hope you watch, and spread the word, this is a fun, witty, saucy-ass hour of great adventure television. It feels like a drive-in movie where you actually have to stop making out with your sweetie because you want to watch the story.
Just watch it, love it, and spread the word! This show needs to be a hit! :)
And thanks to everyone involved for my favorite new show! Especially Beau, actress Melanie Scrofano, and showrunner Emily Andras! MORE EARP!
